Zip through the towering rocks walls of Tutukau Gorge on a Waikato River jet-boat ride. You’ll make a stop at the Orakei Korako geothermal reserve for a walk on a raised boardwalk past boiling mud pools and New Zealand's largest geyser. Then it’s back on the jet boat for another thrilling high-speed ride as your driver maneuvers 360-degree spins and fishtails through the water.
What to Expect
This jet-boat ride on the Waikato River offers exciting transport to the geothermal reserve of Orakei Korako. In the morning or afternoon, make your way to the jet-boat headquarters, just a 30-minute drive from Taupo or Rotorua. Your guide provides an orientation and safety briefing before you slip on a life jacket and climb into the jet boat for a wild ride on the Waikato River.

En route to Orakei Korako, your driver speeds into high gear for an adrenaline-pumping ride complete with 360-degree spins and fishtail turns. Hear about the birdlife, fishing grounds and pine forests lining the riverbanks, where evidence of geothermal activity can be seen in the steam. The river’s highlight is Tutukau Gorge, where stunning cliffs rise 165 feet (50 meters) from the water.

Reaching your destination, embark on a walk through the otherworldly landscape of boiling hot springs, mud pools and colorful silica terraces, with as many as 23 natural geysers on display.

Back on board the jet boat, complete your 3-hour excursion by returning to your starting point where you’re offered a hot beverage.

Speed -tick, scenery -tick, fun -TICK, TICK

Something for everyone. An informative, scenic cruise downstream, an interesting time exploring the geothermal area and then a spectacular, heart racing ride home. Just make sure you have a change of clothes afterwards :)
