About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Tatters080 contributionsDone well - better than I thoughtFriends from NZ booked this experience for us. On the whole this is not really our type of thing. I felt it was very well organised, not tacky in any way and the people were lovely. We enjoyed the food. I think something for everyone and the puddings were very good. Drinks extra. It was nice to sit with people other than our party. So on the whole I would recommend this if you think it is for you.Written February 3, 2024
- codester140 contributionsGreat experience, little too longThis village provides an excellent look into Māori culture. We learned a ton about the people and their culture. They have a cultural performance which was our favorite part. The meal provided was very well done, not our favorite food but fun to try traditional foods. The only thing I would change was that it ran a little long. Could’ve been just a little bit shorter.Written November 30, 2023
- Face_The_Elements0 contributionsMitai Māori MagicMitai Māori Village is an immersive and captivating experience that beautifully showcases Māori culture. The host was entertaining, professional, and seriously enthusiastic about sharing his culture with audience members. He answered all our questions with comedic timing and made the whole experience way more fun. The cultural aspect kicked off with performers greeting us on a canoe on a nearby river, which led to a detailed performance under a covered auditorium which included a large set. Following the entertainment, we indulged in a traditional hangi feast, which included lots of meats, potatoes, stuffing, some vegetables and seafood. Once we were full, we took part in the glow worm viewing. Mitai Māori Village makes visitors feel a genuine connection to New Zealand's rich heritage and is recommended for anyone seeking an authentic encounter.Written November 9, 2023

It was all amazing but the highlight for me was actually the Q&A session because I learnt so much from Te Pō.. he is really knowledgeable, authentic, honest and fun! Huge kia ora for the hīkoi team. - Questovia0 contributionsGood and BadWhat I liked was the delicious hangi meal and seeing how it was prepared. What I didn't care for was the huge crowd of people they tried to handle at one time, the lack of audio or information when they were taking us through the village, and the sense of so much of it being staged. I liked the concept of what they were trying to do, but it definitely needs some polishing.Written April 22, 2023
- STiGuy330 contributionsA Really Cool and Unique Experience in RotoruaWhen we first arrived and saw the tables lined up in a large space, we weren't sure we'd made a good choice. However, our concerns were quickly proven unfounded as the night unfolded. We enjoyed walking around the village and seeing the sights and learning more about the Maori culture. The food at dinner was better than we expected, it was a delicious meal. Highly recommend.Written April 9, 2023

- Jane P0 contributionsTake an extra layerThis is a very popular experience when visiting Rotorua, we booked ahead on line. We’d recommend wearing an extra layer as part of the evening is spent outside. The meal is served after the welcome and show around 8pm, so we regretted not having a small snack to tide us over late afternoon. The meal majored on meat and carbs with a dish of salad available at the end of the buffet. Nice desserts including a chocolate roulade and a pavlova. For the number of people in attendance we thought the service was efficient. It felt a bit touristy but we learnt lots about the Māori culture which was important to us. Unless you are a big group be prepared to sit and mix with other people - the more engaging (or not) your table companions are will impact your enjoyment of the experience.Written March 14, 2023

The van (great driver) that collected us from our hotel was tired and run down and that’s basically how the rest of the evening panned out. They have been doing this for 20+ years they say and it showed. Our compere or host rambled in his speech which was repetitive and peppered with inaccuracies. The walks outside had too many people / not enough hosts so if you got stuck at the back, you couldn’t hear or even see the person speaking. The walkabout after dinner was even worse as not only could you not hear or see them, a lack of lights made wandering along forest paths a serious safety issue. The meal, cooked in a gas fired pit, looked good but it was all cold by the time we got to the self-service. The stage show lacked a story line and any form of choreography and was a very flat series of dance and song sound bites. It could be so much better but the profits are not being reinvested in infrastructure and the event needs improving. Get on and do something about it guys!

We booked an evening trip (6.30 pm) to Mitai Māori Village cultural experience. Not cheap, at NZD 135 pp, (£68) but the experience kept one entertained for three hours; looking at the “hangi” ground oven; watching a canoe-full of warriors glide along the river, and seeing a live action show, illustrating the Māori peace ceremony, music, singing and combat techniques, including the famous haka. A great show, and fully “in your face”. After about 90 minutes you go back into the dining room, where a good selection of hangi food awaits you, though frankly I failed to taste the distinctive hangi quality of the meal. But portions were generous. After some questions from the floor, you are taken on a final, night-time tour of the forest, complete with glow-worms. It is all done on a large scale; about 200 guests for the evening and my only slight criticism is that that made taking us all to see things hard to manage effectively.

This was an amazing way to learn about the Maori Culture. We were picked up at our hotel by Kappy who immediately made us feel at home and told us great stories on the way to the village. The event was well organized and ran smoothly without our feeling rushed. My only complaint is that the huge number of people made it hard to see the welcome ceremony. The food was delicious and the show was very informative and entertaining. Hats off to everyone for a spectacular evening!

We very much enjoyed the Mitai Maori experience. The food was good. The man in charge was very entertaining. We learned much about the Maori culture through the story telling, the demonstration of dance and the walk later in the grounds. We were picked up at our hotel promptly and returned. Not having to drive made for an easy night. And they kindly allowed me to rebook on a different evening when we were delayed arriving into town. Overall a very good night.

Host was funny and welcoming. Gave some insight into Māori history and culture plus history of this family business. Impressive knowledge of a few words in various languages to put patrons at ease/feel welcome at start of night.
Natural spring (reason village founded) was amazing and boat entry plus Māori performances both impressive.
Food was a little bland but enjoyable.
Could not book directly on website as link to booking page not working, so could not use discount provided by accomodation.

Fantastic experience for all ages. Sadly our “chief” from Manchester didn’t understand the importance of his job role and showed little respect for the process and performance, making inappropriate jokes and unable to construct a coherent response when asked to deliver a short speech as part of the theatre. Wish the host had taken steps to choose someone else.
However, the set, atmosphere and dance depicted an accurate insight into Māori culture and it’s traditions. Each dance and song delivered with high energy and spirit (even though they do this every day, many times).
Glow worm trail was sweet although please mention to tourists NOT to use their phone flash as their lights go out.
Having been raised amongst Cook islanders, Rarotongans and the Māori community in the 70s/80s, I’ve had my fair share of Hāngī’s, (a traditional New Zealand Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven, called an umu). The offering was tasty and abundant, and was appreciated enormously by the end of the evening by both the adults and children.
A great introduction into Māori tradition and culture. I hope these values continue down throughout the community and is embraced by its young. We will definitely return with friends next year. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.

We were expecting this to be a cheesy performance with mediocre food on par with the luaus Hawaiian hotels put on. It isn’t. The food was some of the best we’ve had in NZ (and we’ve had some really good food) and the show was informative and entertaining. They did a mix of traditional Maori songs and some more modern music (with guitar accompaniment). What really came trough was how happy and excited everyone seemed to be doing this, despite doing the same show every night. They really care about giving guests a good experience.

This is one the the experiences I was looking forward to while in New Zealand. The original people of New Zealand and its cultures. It was an excellent experience and the Maori people where very genuine in sharing with us. I am so happy they are getting back what was taken away from them.
The Rainbow Springs walk was also very informative and well presented. This is where I learned about the silver fern that you see all over New Zealand. The highlight here was the fern and finally seeing a live kiwi. It was so precious to see them in the refuge and as natural a setting as possible.
Thank you for the dances, songs and history of your people and villages. On my cruise ship I learned to make a poi and a little dance to go with it so it was fun to watch the poi dances.

My wife and I enjoyed our Mitai Maori Village experience during our trip to New Zealand. It was an exciting, fascinating, educational, and delicious evening of witnessing Maori culture and cuisine. The evening started with checking in and getting situated at our table in the banquet hall. Dinner is included, but drinks outside of water are excluded, so we ordered a wine and a beer from the bar.
About half an hour after the scheduled start time, the festivities began, with our emcee introducing the plans for the evening and giving us an idea of the Maori traditions we would be witnessing. We then headed out to file past the traditional hāngī feast being prepared with seemingly endless chicken and lamb and potatoes being backed. Then it was down to the stream to see a traditional war canoe arrival. It was crowded and drizzly, and we didn't get the best view of the arrival. Those in the back half of the guest line did not get good spots, but what we did see was very neat.
Then it was onto the theater area, where we spent an hour watching a series of fantastic and riveting Maori dances and performances showcasing the traditional athletics, arts, music, and song. This was by far the highlight of the evening, as we learned a lot about Maori mythology and crafts and history.
Afterwards, it was back inside for dinner, which was absolutely delicious. The meat was super tender and lightly flavorful, paired well with a variety of root vegetables, bread, salad, and sauces. There were also traditional desserts!
The end of the evening had us returning to the outdoor trail, walking along the stream to see recreations of traditional Maori villages lit in moody lighting and a close-up at glowworms growing on rocks and under leaves right next to the trail! This was pretty cool to see, and though the glowworms were as spectacular as, say, in Waitomo, it was still enjoyable to see them. They're not as radiant as in photos, but we could definitely see them when we ducked down and let our eyes adjust.
Overall, this was a fun and fulfilling evening, and we'd definitely recommend checking out the Mitai Maori Village for anyone traversing North Island, and especial passing through Rotorua!

On our recent holiday in New Zealand we were very fortunate to visit the Mitai Maori Village Experience in Rotorua.
Upon arrival we were warmly greeted and given a brief overview of our visit.
After that we went back outside where we stopped to check our lunch which was cooking on hot rocks in a pit.
We then followed our host through the beautiful rainforest where we saw pristine pools and bubbling water. We stopped to see the Maori warriors arrive in a wooden canoe. We also saw an authentic recreation of a Maori village.
We then went into a large hall where we were welcomed with a Haka and an excellent cultural show including singing, dancing and displays of traditional weapons, tools and games.
After the show we had a smorgasbord lunch which included the meat cooked in the pit, salads, desserts and a complimentary drink.
The Mitai Maori Village brought history to life and it was a great experience which is well worth a visit !

Written September 10, 2018
Perhaps beauty by night, we booked it at the tourist office as dinner was the earliest here of all the shows, they did a river boat display, dance and singing show, dinner, then we had a tour of the forest with glowing water and a few tree explanations.

Is this the Beauty by Night Combo ( Mitai Maori Village & Rainbow Springs) Tour
Written July 31, 2018
We will be in NZ in October and November, and would like to see the least touristy Maori cultural event. We are going to be at the War Museum in Auckland, at Waitangi, and at Rotorua, among other places. I realize that all the hangi in Rotorua will be somewhat touristy. Please give any comments on War Museum and Waitangi, as well as advice for Rotorua.
Written May 8, 2018
I loved NZ!!! I can’t give you advise on war museum as I always try to avoid them... There is more things in Auckland to see such as the Tower or take ferry to Waiheke Island. There you can take a wine tour or use the public transport that goes around the vineyards.
The Best part was to drive to Waitomo Caves and do 5 Hours tour (the latest is the best).. worth the money!
In Rotorua be prepare for strong smell. Maori cultural dinner is fantastic. Food is delicious and you get a closer look of their believes and beautiful legacy. The Maori Chapel is in town and it is very pretty. A bit of drive off Rotorua to Taupo you will find a place called WAI-O-TAPO where champagne pool is. Need to arrive BEFORE 9:30 to get tickets and go to some demonstration of the volcano... it is an easy walk and pretty as well.
If you have time, take a look at the Coromandel peninsula where hot pools are as well.
I hope this helps
