Overview
Enjoy a cultural tour at Whakarewarewa, a living Maori village in Rotorua, where you’re treated to a performance of traditional dance and song. A local guide shares stories of Maori history, customs and craft traditions before walking you past the geothermal wonders of Pohutu and Prince of Wales geysers. Opt to include a ‘hangi’ meal of chicken, beef, sweet potato and dessert cooked the traditional way — in boiling hot pools and steam vents.
What to Expect
Make your way to Whakarewarewa, a living Maori village in the heart of Rotorua. Start with a 1-hour guided tour of the grounds. You’ll learn about Maori wood-carving and other traditions as you visit on-site homes, artisan workshops, a communal garden, cemetery, ancestral meeting house and more. Discover how skilled weavers make the piupiu (dancing skirt) and hear the meaning behind moko (tattoos).

Then follow your guide to two viewing platforms to see Pohutu Geyser and Prince of Wales Geyser in action as they erupt daily with spray that reaches up to 100 feet (30 meters) high.

Next, enjoy a 30-minute cultural performance, which features a mihi (traditional welcome), song, poi dance and haka (war dance).

Upgrade to include a hangi feast prepared in Whakarewarewa’s traditional fashion — steamed over natural vents and cooked in hot pools rather than with heated stones in a dugout pit. Enjoy a complete lunch of chicken, beef, potato, kumara (sweet potato), bread stuffing, carrots, cabbage and sweet corn on the cob with gravy. For dessert, savor steam pudding accompanied by fruit salad, custard and cream. Drinking water, tea and coffee are also provided.

After the scheduled activities, you are free to explore the village on your own.
