About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Connector527005768420 contributionsBeautiful and great storytellingEsther was an amazing guide, loved the fact that she's Maori and really tried hard to make sure the stories were accurate. My partner and three kids loved it and they all Whakapapa to Te Arawa so it was awesome confirmation and learnings for themWritten August 14, 2024
- kelsey9990 contributionsSightseeing and entertainmentThe duck tour was very entertaining, the guide Esther was fantastic, she had fun jokes along the way and told great stories interpreting the area around us. It’s beautiful scenery of course but the guide is really what makes the scene come to life. Highly recommend being driven around on the duck, it’s a nice mix of a boat ride and transportation without any fuss. Amazing option for backpackers that don’t have a vehicle to get out and see the lakes!Written August 5, 2024
- 12KatrinaM0 contributionsGreat, unique fun experience - highly recommend! We had an excellent afternoon out with our host/driver Alex exploring the stunning Lakes of Rotorua. As a local Kiwi I had not explored this area before and was blown away by the beauty, both on the land and the water. Our two children loved the trip and we all found it informative and entertaining. While in July we did not get cold and had the windows up/open the entire trip. I highly recommend for a fun family outing, away from the busy tourist attractions.Written July 15, 2024

Its really cold in the wintertime though, especially at the end of the day; so rug up warm (I thought I read there were heaters and blankets onboard now, but there were neither).Written July 11, 2024

My family and I took a guided tour of the Rotorua lakes in the amphibian duck boat. A genuine WW2 military craft, the duck boat was a sight to behold and definitely the centre of attention on the roads with loads of waving and smiles from people we passed.
Our intrepid guide, Josh, had the charismatic banter of an experienced professional that led me to suggest he moonlight as a stand up comedian.
Friendly and clearly happy in his work, Josh gave out interesting facts and fascinating historical information about the locations we visited and ensured we all had a great time.
The lakes were beautiful, some as smelly as expected, others picturesque. We even won the triathlon taking place on one (OK, we inadvertently parked at the finish line so Josh could check for water weeds, and quickly had to back up when the winners arrived).
With such gorgeous scenery there were loads of great opportunities for photos and the duck tours was the highlight of our holiday.

Thank you for your review, we are so happy to hear you enjoyed your tour with Josh. I must admit I was surprised to hear our Duck had won a triathlon considering her speed both for the water and road (I have yet to see her ride a bike!) however you cleared up that confusion! Thanks for joining us!

Went on the Saturday tour and our driver was Mark. I feel he is dedicated to the job he does because he is Quackers and it makes the tour a lot more interesting. Staff at the booking office are more than happy to help moving me over to another tour as the one I had booked for was cancelled so they put me on the 2 hour one for the same price as the other tour. When you consider that times are hard for all businesses such a gesture goes a long way and was a gesture of $ not just of goodwill.
Vehicle is fully heated with roll down sides so winter is not a problem. You will learn some amazing facts on the tour and you may even get to see some real ducks.

Thanks for leaving this awesome review. It's always good to hear the whole experience was great from the office to the tour. It's times like these where we do need to look out for one another like you say and without support from people like yourself we can't continue to do what we do. So thank you for coming and we are glad you had an awesome tour.

Worth doing once to say you did it, but would not do it again. At the end of the day it's an old bus that just happens to float. After 5 seconds of going in the lake you realise that's it. Maybe a rainy day activity?
Some interesting facts and commentary but our guide had verbal diarrhoea and after 90 mins of the PA system and bouncing around on the bus we were happy to be back at the base.
The good:
Local history, checking out the lakes/scenery and novelty of going into the water
The bad:
Legroom is TERRIBLE if you are over 6', you will definitely be sitting sideways. The PA system sucks, while it seems to play music ok, the tour guides voice over it was distorted and painful to listen to (like someone yelling in your ear with a loud hailer). The really awkward jokes just got tiresome and would have rated higher otherwise, sorry Josh.

Hello,
We are very sorry to see that the tour did not live up to your expectations. Our guides pride themselves on trying to ensure that all our guests have a great time while with us, so it is very unfortunate to hear that this was not the case with your experience.
As you would have known from the description of our tour, we are a genuine WWII vehicle, and as such it can be noisy and there is a limit on space, most people see this as part of the experience as you may read from other reviews. There are seats available that have a bit more legroom and I would recommend that if you struggle with this issue to always ask in advance if there is seating available for taller persons, we would have been happy to offer you the seat.
We do always hope that our sound system is working correctly and test it on a regular basis. We live in a sulfuric environment and we constantly have to change out electrical wiring as a result of this. We will always do our best to correct any issue if we are alerted to the problem at hand.
We hope that you will take away the good from the experience. We are doing our best in these difficult times, so please feel free to approach directly in the future so that any issues can be resolved before a 2 star review is given.

We took a tour with josh. The city tour with two lakes. Josh made this tour extremely fun and also interesting at the same time. Playing the titanic theme tune as we entered the lake was absolutely perfect.
My only gripe was I wish the city part of the tour was slightly longer covering more areas other than just round the museum area and Lake Rotorua.
This trip was booked on bookme along with the an add on to the Polynesian spa which made it a great deal.
Thanks for a great tour.

Locals enjoying our backyard as a birthday adventure for a 12 year old and a 7 year old.Shelly was a super driver/skipper with her varied and light hearted banter mixed with the serious information. There was something for each of us. We loved the Duck tour and recommend it enthusiastically.

We took the 2 hour tour with Marcus. It was a fun experience. The commentary from Marcus was knowledgeable with a good mix of humour - even our 12 year old was laughing away. It actually felt like we could drive around all day learning & laughing the whole time.
It was lovely to splash down on the lakes. It was the first time any of us (in our family unit) have been on the lakes which was made just that much more special in the DUKW.
I definitely recommend that visitors go on a tour at least once. Not only is the vehicle historic, but learning about NZ’s history at the same time is priceless.

Thank you for your review of our tour, awesome that you enjoyed your time with us! Marcus is a fantastic guide we agree, full of information and awful dad jokes, just the way a tour should be we think! Who knew history could be interesting AND fun!

This tour was awesome! We had so much fun seeing Rotorua and spending time on the lakes in the duck. Shelley our tour guide 100% made our trip all the more better. She was such a fun, accommodating and informative host who had everyone laughing along the way. Love that she added a few tunes to the trip and appreciated how knowledgeable she was about Rotorua and some of the key monuments. I did the tour with my parents and my 75 year old nan and we all had a great time. Well worth supporting these guys and booking a trip next time you're in Rotorua.

We had a great afternoon on our WWII Duck - exploring the city of Rotorua and some of its lakes. Our driver/skipper, Josh, was not only informative about an area he clearly has a passion for, but absolutely hilarious and kept us entertained the whole journey. It’s an absolute shame what Covid has done to the tourism industry so I would highly recommend supporting this local business on your next stop to Rotorua

Tour guide, driver and skipper Shelley did a fine job highlighting some of the city sights and surrounding natural attractions. Not only did she have good local knowledge but her sense of humour was delightful and almost drove us quackers. Good work Shelley.

The whole trip was awesome. Our driver/skipper
seemed very knowledgeable about the area and put a good comedic twist to the story telling journey he took us on. He kept it interesting the whole time and made it an enjoyable ride to be on.
