What to expect
We offer a free pick up and drop off from central Auckland if required (Auckland Ferry Building). After a short 10 min drive to our launch location at St Heliers beach we provide a full safety and kayak briefing before paddling across the stunning Waitemata harbor.  On arrival at Rangitoto Island, which is the largest and youngest of Auckland's volcanoes, you will start the leisurely 1hr walk to the summit. Walking up the pohutukawa-cloaked island gives you the chance to explore the baked scoria rocks which support over 200 different native trees and flowering plants. Upon reaching the top you will be treated to the finest 360 degree views that the Auckland region has to offer. At the return to the water's edge, a healthy hearty kiwi lunch will be awaiting you, with cold and hot drinks to match! If time permits, you might even enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea before the gear is packed back into the kayak to head home. As you kayak back south, perhaps with the help of a sail, you arrive back safely at St Heliers Bay. An exciting, action-packed and educative day for all!

This is a must do experience. My second time and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The company does everything right to make sure this trip is about you. From beginning to end. Well organised, safety conscious, friendly, helpful and overall top notch team. So easy and effortless. On top of this you have one of the best Auckland experiences. Find me something better .... thank you Nic @Auckland Sea Kayaks. PS Eric - “proper job”.

Kayaking Adventure to Rangitoto
Jun 2020 • Friends
We had such a good time on this tour! Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Kayaking to such an incredible place was a great challenge and felt really special. Rangitoto itself is beautiful. We got to explore it on our walk to the summit and the BBQ was delicious. Eric and Tom were amazing! They made everything run so smoothly and knew so much about the wildlife and natural features. All equipment provided (including fleeces, waterproofs, the works!). Overall definitely great value for money and an unforgettable experience.

Day sea kayak tour to Rangitoto Island
Mar 2020 • Solo
What a fabulous day on the water and on the island. Our guide Eric got us off to a great start with everything we needed to know, and gave us lots of very interesting information when we were on the island. The paddling and the island hike were spectacular and there was time for a gorgeous swim. And then there was the delicious barbecue lunch!! Tour mates were lots of fun too. All in all, a truly memorable day. Thanks Eric☺️

More of a workout than expected but still great fun!
Feb 2020
I went on a half day tour expecting an easy short kayak and hike. What I got was a challenging long kayak trip and thankfully casual hike. I also didn't realise the lunch would be so good, BBQ steaks, and a history lesson on the island and local area. I also appreciate that, for no extra charge, I was picked up nearer the city where I was staying and dropped back afterwards. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a challenge of endurance on the water and a chill atmosphere from the guide on both sea and hike.

A great day with Auckland Sea Kayaks
We had a wonderful day kayaking to and hiking on Rangitoto Island. After a short drive from downtown, we geared up and we were off. Our guide was Lara and it was a great pleasure to spend the day with her. It takes about an hour to kayak across the bay(~5 km) - a good workout but anyone in reasonable shape should be able to do it. A one hour hike to the summit followed (900 ft elevation gain), and 40-50 min back down. View from top was well worth the effort. Lunch is included with the tour and was quite good. We then headed back across the bay. It was a great way to spend the day. If you want to explore a volcanic island that is only 600 years old and don’t mind a little exercise to get there (vs the water taxi that most people take), then I highly recommend Auckland Sea Kayaks. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic Day Out on the habour
Jan 2020
Fantastic day to enjoy the harbour and challenge of kayaking 10 km. Even for a novice like me! My guide, Eric, was very encouraging and informative. Hike and lunch were great too and the views from the top of Rangitoto were amazing. I learnt so much about Auckland as well.

Fantastic Sea Kayak tour
What a fabulous day! Lara was our guide and she was great! Very friendly, informative, funny, as well as an experienced and very safe sea kayaker. It was beautiful to see Auckland and the nearby islands from the water. The kayak trip was 5 km each way to Rangitoto Island which took a little bit more than an hour each way. The hike up to the summit of Rangitoto was 5 km round trip and a nice way to stretch our legs after sitting in the kayak, with brilliant views. We had a delicious lunch before our kayak back. It was a fantastic day- our first in Auckland and I would highly recommend it and would do another tour with Auckland Sea Kayaks.

Look out before you step out.
This is an adventure to remember. We did the day tour option. They make sure you are well equipped for the journey.

After kayaking through open waters to Rangitoto island. The tour does say no experience necessary and that's true. But please note that you will be kayaking a total of approximately 10km (return) as well as hiking up the mountain for about an hour and 45 minutes (return). Your BBQ lunch is great and exactly what you need for the return ride back to Auckland. Our guide was very helpful and made sure no one was left behind whilst kayaking.

It is a great active experience and you will be very tired when you get back.

Do I recommend this? Yes, 100%
Would I do it again? No.
I see this as something that you need to experience but if you're a beginner or have no experience you'd only do it once.

Hey Travis, Glad you enjoyed the trip to Rangitoto Island and felt you were well-equipped for the journey. We agree that the trip requires moderate fitness levels. The paddle each way to the island takes approximately 1 hour and the hike is 2.5 km (1.5 miles). Having a decent pair of shoes and a full belly always helps too - hence the salad, steaks and fresh loaves. A true adventure accessible from the heart of Auckland city. Glad you would recommend to other visitors and maybe we can convince you to come back again one day to try some of our other kayaking experiences. Safe travels, Nic.

Wonderful day!
May 2019 • Couples
My wife and I were looking to do something active on our extra day in Auckland and we researched options and this came up. We were debating about whether to do the day or the night option, with us opting for the day option. We were glad we did. We enjoyed our kayaking excursion to the island, as well as hiking on the island! Such a beautiful piece of creation with many native wildlife and flora to be found! Afterwards we had a nice lunch after hiking that wasn't overwhelming for our kayak back. Our guide Eric was fantastic as well. Highly recommend to all!

Thank you for highly recommending our Day Sea Kayak to Rangitoto. Even though the Day tour and Sunset tour in theory are the same itinerary, the experiences that people have on each of these tours can be quite different. Rangitoto is a volcanic island that erupted approximately 600 years ago and is an amazing place to visit and explore. Thank you once again for choosing to come paddling. We loved having you on the adventure.

An adventurous day of kayaking and hiking
We only stayed in Auckland for two nights, but my fiance and I were glad that we booked this tour. Our guide was Bradley and he was very knowledgeable about Rangitoto island as well as NZ. He made the trip fun and exciting and did well with talking with everyone in the group. The kayaking was a bit more difficult than I expected. Mostly because we don't have much experience kayaking in open waters, but I think nearly everyone could do it and it is a rewarding experience when you reach the shores. The hiking was fun, but you want to make sure you come with good shoes. You can pack them in a bag that is provided for you to keep them dry as you kayak to the island. I didn't want to walk in my wet shoes, so I ended up doing the hike in flip flops, but it wasn't too bad. The lava caves (if time permits) was an amazing experience since it was free roaming, wasn't cleaned up for tourists, and had a slight bit of difficultly. There were some parts that felt a little dangerous, but added to the fun. Lunch was included, was tasty, and was a nice way to rest after the hike. Well worth the money booking and I'd highly recommend it.

Really nice to read that you enjoyed our Day Sea Kayak tour to Rangitoto. Bradley is a born and bred Aucklander and is keen to show off his home and places he loves to travels and fellow New Zealanders. The lava tubes on Rangitoto (also found on some other locations around Auckland) are left behind after the passage of liquid lava. The lava tubes are formed when low-viscosity molten lava known cools on the outside due to contact with the ground and air, to form a hard crust. This crust allows the still-liquid molten lava to continue to flow through inside. The ones at Rangitoto that you went through are large tubes which we call caves as its easier to explain that way. Thanks again for the review.
