- TancyD0 contributionsAwesome experience!Awesome experience! Daniel our guide was fantastic! Very knowledgeable, helpful and reassuring. Told us everything we needed to know about paddling and safety before we set out, shared lots of interesting info on the walk to the summit of Rangitoto and cooked a fabulous lunch as well. Great support on the paddle home, offering extra technique tips and ongoing encouragement. Thoroughly recommend and definitely hope to do it again.Written March 28, 2024
- 14erBaggers0 contributionsPeaceful time on island to ourselvesWe took the ~4 hour kayak tour to Motukorea/ Brown Island. Chloe took good care of us and made sure we stayed safe on the water. Though we had kayaked once before, this was our first time sea kayaking. It was more work than we thought it might be since we’re a bit older. That said, it was worth the experience and the sense of accomplishment to kayak to Motukorea/ Brown Island. Since only kayaks can land on the island, we were the only ones on the entire island! We had a nice hike (not too long and not too short) to the top of the island where we had 360 degree views of the bay. Chloe had brought tea and coffee including milk and sugar, and also had a rich chocolate dessert as a snack. We had originally thought of doing the Rangitoto island kayak trip, but were thankful we did the Motukorea/ Brown Island trip since it was a shorter trip and wonderful to have an island to ourselves! A few tips: If you wear water shoes in the kayak, bring some comfortable shoes for the hike. If grass on your skin is irritating, wear long quick dry pants. I had some on and was glad to have the protection since you hike through a grassy stretch on the island. Use the toilets on the mainland before starting your tour as there are no toilets once you get in your canoe. There is a place to rinse off your feet after the tour up by the bathrooms, and on the street side of the bathroom building there is a drinking fountain where you can fill up your water bottle after the trip. We were so thankful to have experienced the harbour from the kayak.Written March 10, 2024

- Judy981360 contributionsGreat Duke of Edinburgh JourneyMy daughter has been on three Duke of Edinburgh journeys with Auckland Sea Kayaks, and honestly, we've been pretty happy each time. Each journey has been a new experience for my daughter. She has learned kayaking, teamwork, resilience, and how to tackle challenges. If you're considering a Duke of Edinburgh trip for your child, Auckland Sea Kayaks is a good choice. Dave has a great way of handling things, understanding the students and parents, thinking on the other people's position and sorting out any issues. Thank you Dave!Written January 31, 2024
- Tink0890 contributionsIn Auckland? Then You Must Explore The City of Sails by KayakHad the most amazing adventure with Auckland Sea Kayaks today; on their day tour of Motukorea Island!! Could not recommend them highly enough!! Even though the trip departs from Helier’s Bay, they offer free pick up from Auckland Museum which is super convenient for anyone staying in the city centre!! Daniel our tour guide really made this trip, he was friendly, welcoming, kept safety at the forefront at all times and just exuded passion for the outdoors and the sea! His knowledge and experience really shone through! Once we made it to the island, which felt like a private tour it was so secluded, we hiked to the summit!! And before we disembarked, Daniel even had brownies and tea for us to fuel our return journey!! The weather today was meant to be choppy and windy, but even a bit of drizzle didn’t dampen our spirits! Thank you Auckland Sea Kayaks and Daniel for making this such a memorable day on my NZ trip!!Written January 22, 2024

- Navigator223282716250 contributionsHike and kayak combination. Nice views from the summit of Rangitoto. We did a day trip with Auckland Sea Kayaks and enjoyed the paddle over and the hike to the summit. We are experienced sea kayakers and had no trouble with the three mile crossing to and from the island. However, the wind did pick up on the way back and it was a bit of a slog to return to the beach. The other couple with less experience were having some difficulties maintaining a proper course so the guides put a lanyard on their bow to help out. Both guides (Nic and partner) were quite competent and at no time did we feel uncomfortable although we did get quite wet. The guides were cheerful throughout the trip and the windy crossing back. Nik was knowledgeable about the history of Rangitoto Island and we did a bit of geocaching there as well. It was an enjoyable day and highly recommended.Written November 29, 2023

Laura was our guide and I really appreciate her attention to safety. Unfortunately, we were not able make our trip to Rangitoto because the wind really picked up preventing safe crossing. We tried to divert to Brown island but it too was too windy to reach. So we had to settle for a shore landing and picnic there without being able to do the hike, sunset trek up the island, and night return. We ended up making it back to base before sunset. Looking back that was probably a wise decision considering we had to help another kayaker not in our group recover from a capsize and rescue on our return. We were told we would receive a partial refund but have not heard yet when or what that might be. It has only been a week since our trip and hopefully we will hear something soon. Otherwise it was a challenging but good trip.

Hey Mark and Linda.
Great to hear that you had a good trip and felt it was safe at all times. It is the nature of outdoor activities that the conditions are different to what is forecast and safety is always the priority.
As stated in our email to you, we advised your booking agent, Viator, the day after the tour that a partial refund was required and they informed us this had taken place. This was emailed to the address you placed in your booking.
Thanks again for paddling with us and email us if you have any further questions

We are inexperienced paddlers but fit and keen for adventure. We had a marvellous trip, starting in full sunshine at St. Helliers Beach where we were given a thorough briefing and fully geared up. We had a great dinner on the jetty that was prepared by Tom and then had time on the island to watch the sun go down over the city before paddling back. As we came back the full moon appeared over the island and we could see the Harbour Bridge and city all lit up. Highly recommended.

I've always wanted to try kayaking and experience the beauty of NZ from a different perspective. This was simply the perfect deal. Fun experience, peaceful and active at the same time. Tom was great fun and very helpful, with lots of insights about Auckland and Rangitoto Island. Kayaking back at night was the best way to end the day with a great view of the city and we even saw the bioluminescent plankton. Just WOW! If you are in Auckland for a few days and want to do something different, active and special, this is for you.

Hello, and yes we agree that this tour has a great range of activity and offers a different perspective of Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. Our guides are locals and are there to help build people's confidence on the water to allow our guests to be fully immersed in nature. Its great to read that Tom achieved this.
Being a local Tom knows a huge amount about the area and loves to show his insights into the areas we visit. Seeing bioluminescent plankton is amazing which kayaking at night. It is one of the most spectacular sights on a night kayak and its similar tiowitnessing the hundreds of tiny star-like bioluminescent phytoplankton dancing like a starry sky as you move through the dark water. Really happy you got to witness this.

This was my second sunset paddle - wanted to bring husband along this time. Equally impressed by friendly guides, well-managed, nice food and of course Rangitoto is a very special place to visit especially after the day crowds have gone home. Special shout out for our trip as sea and wind were quite challenging and one boat had a capsize close to Rangi. The guides managed this extremely well, making sure the rest of us were in a position to make shelter safely and amazingly quickly had the swimmers back in their boat and towed ashore for dry clothes and a cup of tea. Really well done and confidence-inspiring.

Kia ora,
We are happy to read your 5 star review - we are excited to read about your sunset kayak trip to Rangitoto. Thank you for the shout out to our Guides - we love the ocean, are our best selves when sea kayaking and love to share our skills and local knowledge of the region with our guests. It is extremely rare to capsize and we thank you for the acknowledgement of the guides management of this rare event - "extremely well".
It is always great to read a review from our return guests. Look forward to paddling again with you in the near future.

This is an extremely unique experience but could be challenging for some, at least in certain conditions. While the website says a fitness level of "Moderate" is required, I would recommend that you err on the side of caution when booking this tour as it could be more on the strenuous side of things. In our paddle we took a few short breaks but otherwise, we paddled for about 45 minutes non-stop in each direction (outbound was a bit choppy as well). Our hike was pretty continuous as well. In part, I think this was due to the very fit and enthusiastic participants in the group and I enjoyed the workout.
Nonetheless, this was a great experience with guide Eric. If in doubt, I'd recommend bringing some extra warm clothes, especially if there is rain in the forecast -- there is plenty of storage space in the (tandem) kayak. A spray jacket and dry bag are provided along with other safety equipment.
Dinner on the island was surprisingly tasty but the portions were not that big. Especially given the active nature of the tour, you may want to bring some snacks and/or have had a hearty lunch. Note that there are restrooms but no drinking water on the island.
At the end of the tour (when it started to pour), Eric took a few of us back downtown, which was greatly appreciated.
Come prepared for a bit of a workout and a sense of adventure and you'll have a great time!

Had a wonderful sunset tour with Eric. He made sure everyone felt comfortable kayaking and seemed to enjoy getting to know each of us. He also was knowledgeable in the history and vegetation of the island. The pace was about right even though some in the group had never paddled.
A great meal was cooked on the island before our hike to the top. Even though the sunset didn’t have much color we were surprised by a beautiful moon coming over the ridge just as we got back into the boats. Made for a very magical evening paddle.
I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes a good adventure and our guide Eric was great!

It's great to hear you had a wonderful time and Eric was a great host. Our tours are often a melting pot of interesting people from around the world. What an awesome bonus to see an epic Moon rise. The beauty and magic of the Hauraki Gulf never gets old for us and it's nice to hear you experienced it too :)

Watching the sun set from the top of Rangitoto was magical.
The paddle over in itself was also pretty special as we watched the Spirit of Adventure 'sail' past us in all its glory.
The food was fab and the walk to the summit is on a well formed trail. The views from the top are stunning.
Covid was not an issue as the two of us shared a kayak and we were outdoors.

We had the most incredible sunset kayak to Rangitoto. The kayak over was not too hard, lovely and warm and we were rewarded with a gorgeous BBQ. The hike up to the Rangitoto summit was so peaceful, we felt to privileged to be there after everyone had gone home. We were treated to the most beautiful sunset over Auckland. The paddle home was calm and warm and we saw bioluminescent algae in the water lighting up the bottom of the boats and everything we touched went blue! Seeing the city from the sea and kayaking back in the dark was very special. The trip was high above our expectations - would highly recommend!

This kayaking experience crosses the main channel with a guide supervising. Guests use double kayaks. The crossing to the volcano occurs in daylight. We immediately ate steaks and coleslaw prepared for us by the guide at the landing site. We then hiked to the rim of the caldera, just in time to see the sunset on the horizon. This viewpoint allows one to scan the entire Auckland area—a tremendous perspective. The return kayak takes place in the dark. I personally found this challenging but the guide, Eric, kept all of us focused and together. Each kayak has a light attached at the stern. This excursion requires both kayaking and hiking, so one should have some level of fitness if they plan to participate.

This Tour has been my most fun Tour in Auckland. Our guide Daniel was amazing and brought all the required expertise, knowledge and fun to our Trip. It was a beautiful paddle to the the Island where we had a BBQ before hiking to the summit for the sunset. We had a beautiful sunset and a beautiful paddle back in the dark with City lights, stars and some bioluminescence in the water. An experience you cant describe in words or pictures. This Tour is also a great chance to experience rangitoto without masses of other people.
Totally recommond booking this if you're fit enough to paddle for an hour there and an hour back.
Thanks Daniel for the great Trip!

I am considering the sunset tour March 16, 2020.I am trying to understand the correct times: start 4:00PM, duration of trip 6 1/2Hrs, return 10:30PM? Kind of late at night? Is this accurate? Ed
Written September 12, 2019
Yes this is correct, the tour gets back at approx 10 pm and the drop off back into Auckland is 10.30 pm. Sunset time at this time of the year is approx 7.45 pm. After this do a little walk and kayak back to St Heliers Bay. If this is to late then there is the Day tour to Rangitoto or 1/2 Day tour to Motukorea which both start at 8.30 am. Hope to paddle with you in the new year. Kind regards, Auckland Sea Kayaks
