Matakana Coast and Country Tour
This was our 1st tour in Auckland. It was a private tour for just 4 of us and a great introduction to New Zealand.

Breathtakingly stunning !!! How lucky are we that the owners of this fantastic property have opened it up and shared their amazing collection of art works. We had travelled from the South Island to visit and we just loved every minute. Thank you so so much.

What I always enjoy best when visiting a new place is to let someone local show you around. There are always hidden gems and local stories to paint the backdrop.

Lorraine and Ron are just the people to show you around Auckland the North Island’s many treasures.

We were collected from our hotel at the very decent hour of 10am. Perfect for us as we’re mainly here in Auckland to relax more than anything else. The transport for the day was a brand new Mercedes-Benz passenger van with super comfortable black leather seats, air-con and automatic doors. It reminded me more of a limousine rather than a van.

As we headed north out of town Lorraine filled us in on some facts about Auckland and the bridge.

Our first stop was a fascinating little town called Puhoi. It has the most amazing little pub (bar) with all sorts of artefacts adorning the walls and ceiling. We didn’t stay too long, but it’s the kind of place you might like to come back to when spending a bit more time in the area.

Next stop was a cheese factory with the most delicious Brie and blue cheeses. They also do flavored milks and ice creams.

Into Matakana and we Mad a stop at the farmers markets which were really good. I probably could have made a day of just the farmers markets. Lots of great things to eat and drink there. Be prepared to wait a while for what is a very nice coffee here.

We stopped in at Morris and James Pottery for a stroll around and also for a sit-down lunch. I’m not a huge pottery fan but it was a very pretty location and the natural beauty and man-made gardens were worth a visit for me. The pottery was impressive, some of it very large, and in every colour and finish.

The Sculptureum at Matakana was one of the highlights of the day. Comprised of two eclectic outdoor collections and an indoor gallery plus restaurant, the Sculptureum is also potentially a day trip or at least a half day trip in itself. The outdoor sculpture collections are exhibited along a mesmerizing pathway which meanders through exquisitely manicured gardens. The sculptures are occasionally interspersed with live animal enclosures such as exotic birds and Rex Rabbits, making the whole experience a little bit like following Alice into Wonderland.

The indoor gallery was my favorite, with not only more sculptures, but also drawings, etchings, prints etc from a whole range of artists including some of the most famous artists in the world. Totally worth a visit. Probably worth staying here a bit longer and breaking up the visit with lunch.

We stopped in at the Kauri Park to have a look at an 800 year old Kauri Pine tree. An absolute giant.

There were several more stops on our journey but the best thing for me on the tour would have to be the view from the top of the hills overlooking the beautiful bays and back towards Auckland. Lorraine and Ron showed us around some national park areas that are popular with the locals, especially in the warmer months. The natural beauty is astounding. If you had the time and were into camping, then this is where you’d want to visit.

New Zealand is such a beautiful place, and with knowledgeable local guides like Lorraine and Ron we not only enjoyed our day but found lots of places we might like to visit again for a bit longer next time.

Highly recommended.

Jason took us to see the sculpture garden, plus tastings. He is a true “gentlemen” in all sense of the word. We could adopt him, patient, answered all of our dumb questions, took care to make sure we were comfortable. One of our first tours ever, but we had many more planned, and did we get a wake up call! 80% were very disappointing, give me Jason and his family company every time. Tui Tours, you guys are the very best! If we ever go back to Australia we would try to fit in what ever they offer, as it would be so worth while. If you have the opportunity and are near by, give them a call, you will be pleased youmdid.

Hi Margie, Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on your tour with Jason while on your tour to New Zealand and Australia. Our tour north for the sculpture and taste from Auckland gives you a little sample of New Zealand life out of the city. So if you time is limited while traveling to or from Australia and you have only the day in New Zealand we try and give you the best over view possible. We wish you all the best on your travels and if you get the chance to come to New Zealand again we would love to show you more of our home. All the best

Sat waiting at queens wharf for my tour bus and couldnt see any other people waiting. To my surprise i was the only one on the tour.My guide/driver Lorraine greeted me offered front seat which was perfect to view the sights on our trip. The whole trip was fantastic even though i was the only traveller she gave me the full tour was full of local knowledge and history. The cheese factory ....manuka honey centre...the chocolate maker were all very much worth the visit . The morris james pottery centre was amazing. But the highlight had to be the Sculptureum.Im not an arty person by long way but this place totally blew me away.I think i took over 200 photos there. Friends and family were amazed at the exhibits and i will definately visit again when i return in 2020.So i say thank you to Tui Tours for running the tour for just one person when many other operatos would of cancelled. Many thanks to Lorainne for an excellent day
