About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 46trudek0 contributionsA lovely experience!Easy to book the trip, easy to find the pick up place, and our bus guide was excelent! (Unfortunatley I can’t remember his name, but he worked on the 06:30 bus, 08.02). The Hobbiton movie set did not dissapoint, and everyone that was on work that day was so nice!Written February 14, 2025
- U6558ASfrancess0 contributionsOnce in a Lifetime Experience!Wow wow wow! What an incredible experience! We absolutely loved this private tour to Hobbiton and the glow worm caves. Our tour guide Warren was the best! Not only did he impress us with his local knowledge, but he also kept us laughing and entertained as we drove to these amazing destinations. He was so great, we specifically requested him for another tour - the Rotorua Maori cultural and geothermal experience. We are so happy we chose Auckland & Beyond for our once in a lifetime trip to New Zealand.Written February 14, 2025
- mikeandtj20150 contributionsFun ExperienceThe Hobbiton tour was a fun addition to our New Zealand & Australia vacation. Auckland & Beyond Tours arrived on time for our early access tour. Everything went as planned. I recommend both Hobbiton Movie Set tour and Auckland & Beyond Tours.Written February 12, 2025

- Rows A0 contributionsWaiotapu Caves Tour - traveling with RaymondToday, my teenage kids and I went on a tour to the stunning Glow Worms at the Waitomo Caves, and I can't recommend it enough! Our travel to guide, Raymond, truly made the journey getting there and back smooth . He was lovely, considerate, and genuinely caring, especially when he learned that I got car sick. The caves themselves were nothing short of magical, with the sparkling glow worms illuminating the darkness like a starry night sky. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and enchanting experience!Written February 8, 2025
- T6517NCjenniferr0 contributionsWorth the trip! What a beautiful place! As others have said, this is a long day from Auckland but so worth it. The cruise is beautiful, and stopping off to explore the islands with a little hiking was wonderful. Martin was kind, thoughtful, and informative as a guide and worked hard to make sure everyone in my small group (just 5 people) had a great day.Written February 7, 2025
- JazzyTheTraveler0 contributionsWonderful day riding horses, walking about and enjoying art!We spent a lovely day on the countryside around Auckland riding horses, tasting wine, enjoying a lovely lunch at a winery, doing an art walk, and stopping to marvel at the spectacular scenery. Our guide/driver David was just marvelous. My husband tweaked his hip earlier in our trip and so he elected to skip the horseback riding. Not one to let the time pass idly, David took my husband about on a lovely drive. He made other tweaks and adjusts to our trip that helped make it just a fantastic day, notwithstanding my husband’s mobility issues. Couldn’t recommend Auckland & Beyond and David highly enough. We used A&B for other tours and they were all equally perfectly planned and executed. Great and timely communication.Written February 6, 2025
- 733garya0 contributionsNau Mai, Haere MaiOur tour was titled “Auckland City Discovery”. We were met on time by an amazing gentleman, Warren, who made our whole day special, memorable and most of all, Fun! I can’t even begin to remember his in depth descriptions of Auckland’s history, its culture (including many references to the Māori language), uand the people of New Zealand. We were 2 of 6 passengers in a most comfortable van that Warren handled with ease. He effortlessly zipped us around Auckland and would change course if anyone came up with a personal request. We will remain ever grateful for Auckland Beyond Tours for providing us with an amazing tour guide, Warren. He admitted he’s not their best guide, but we don’t believe him. Ask for Warren!Written February 6, 2025
- AshokM7260 contributionsVery informative & educative tourWe went on a half day tour of Auckland today (06/02/2025) with our tour guide cum driver Warren. Warren was a jovial, friendly & knowledgeable person who never tried to hurry us up anywhere. I couldn't detect any trace of racial overtone in his narration of New Zealand's history. We were taken to a war memorial followed by rose 🌹 garden. We then went to the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial where Warren told us about the Waitangi Treaty, it's breach, the Maoris moving the Supreme Court, the court deciding in their favour, the government giving them compensation etc. We then moved to Achilles point. On way, he showed us a busy beach ⛱️ & prime residential area on the other side. The tour ended with a visit to a dormant volcano 🌋. Instead of the slated 3 hours, we returned after 4 hours of a thoroughly enjoyable & memorable trip. The weather fortunately was exceptionally good. We were also served snacks & water towards the end. Thanks Warren. Thanks "Auckland & Beyond Tours".Written February 5, 2025
- 208sunap0 contributionsVery Happy With This TourWe had wonderful time on this tour. Both places are well worthwhile seeing. Small group made travel easier. Our tour guide Adil was great, educated us on NZ history and culture, gave enough information about the places we would visit without diminishing the surprise element. He also added a few other quick stops that were fun.Written February 4, 2025

- JazzyTheTraveler0 contributionsWonderful day at Hobbiton with a spectacular evening feast to boot! Our driver Raymond was prompt in picking us up, had waters for us along the ride, and was a wealth in of information about all things New Zealand. We arrived to Hobbiton with plenty of time to look at the souvenir shop, grab a coffee and ice cream cone, and then head out on the tour of the Shire. My husband tweaked his hip as we were on our way to this trip and it has caused some mobility issues for him. I wrote to A&B and they were able to organize a golf cart to take us around in and it saved the day for us. The feast at Hobbiton, holy Moses!! It was absolutely terrific, and beautiful. I didn’t exactly have high hopes and didn’t really know what to expect, but it’s a very Hobbit worthy feast for sure. Was so pleasantly surprised by that. In all, it was a magical evening, and A&B and Raymond really helped make everything easy peasy on our end. So grateful for this special tour.Written February 3, 2025
- hopet9350 contributionsLord of the Rings and Hobbits…Need I Say More?!New Zealand is a stunning country and this tour really highlights that fact! The ride to the movie set is long, but the sheer beauty of the journey is amazing - so lush and green! Due to the weather that morning, there were even places that looked like Mordor! If you’re a fan of the movies, this is a MUST DO activity! Seeing The Shire up close is a dream come true, even 20 years after the movies came out! The attention to detail is perfect and truly makes you forget where you are! Did I mention the absolute gorgeous countryside?! The were times I would be looking around The Shire and I had to ask if what I was seeing was real - it looks like a painting! At the end of the tour (and coinincidently, where the last scene of the movie was filmed) you get to go INSIDE one of the houses! I was jumping up and down giddy with excitement! BEST PART OF THE TOUR! It was so fun exploring the house and being a Hobbit for 30 mins or so! And you get to have a free drink at The Green Dragon - I opted for the hard cider and it was delicious. I also had a lamb and rosemary meat pie at the bakery before the tour - I don’t think I’ve ever had a meat pie, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, although it was highly recommended. It was phenomenal, so flavorful and the pie itself flaky, soft, and hot - it was the perfect start to the day! The weather was perfect on the day of my tour, having rained a bit beforehand on the ride up (but not enough to make it muddy). It wasn’t too chilly, cooler at the start (a light jacket was welcomed), but the sun eventually came out and warmed it up as the tour continued (no jacket necessary, but not sweltering either). However, be sure to bring and apply sunscreen (there’s not much shade). I can’t adequately articulate how much I loved this tour! EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TOUR IS AMAZING and it’s worth every penny! Oh! I almost forgot there’s another part of the package 😂 You go to Waitomo and visit the caves and see the glow worms. This is the shortest part of the tour, but I was appreciative because, although it was one of my FAVORITE days, it was long and I was getting tired. The cave tour is just enough for you to enjoy it, but not get bored. The best part is either the song in the caves (our tour guide almost brought us to tears with his voice) or the boat ride in the dark with the glow worms twinkling above.Written January 30, 2025

If you want to see Hobbiton and you don't live in New Zealand, you'll want to fly into Auckland. This tour will pick you up at one of 5 points throughout Auckland and drive you around 2.5 hours to Matamata, where Hobbiton resides.
Along the way, our driver and guide, Angelo, spoke about national industry and indigenous culture while we enjoyed a beautiful ride out in the country. When we arrived at Hobbiton, there was a nice cafe to enjoy 2nd breakfast and a latte, at which point we were handed over to the local guide for the set tour. The movie set and surrounding farmlands is probably going to be the most beautiful, peaceful place you will see in New Zealand, if not the world.
After a quick post-tour stop at the gift shop, we headed back to Auckland. All in, the tour was about 8 hours from Auckland pickup to dropoff. If you are under ~35 and not a New Zealand citizen, a drink at the Green Dragon will require a passport; a driver's license from another country will not work. Suggest booking the early tour, and going on a sunny day if possible, but there are plenty of available umbrellas throughout the outside portions of the tour for rainy visits.
Highly recommend!!

A well organised tour from booking through to completion
Trip Advisor booking process was so easy and the delayed payment option gives you time if for any reason your plans change for whatever reason a really good facility
A&BT contact you a day or so before just to finalise the details and your collection point
Once we were collected spot on time by Paul (Brilliant) our driver and guide the day was always going to be good.
When fully loaded we were fortunate to have a good group on the tour Paul outlined the days itinerary and it was delivered word for word
Paul providing a very informative running commentary on the way to Hobbiton that broke up the journey of 2.5hrs
On arrival a very well organised process from A&BT and Hobbiton team that had us rolling right on time a really good guide took around the set and gave some great information about behind the scenes and how the movie was made added to what we had expected.
Once the tour was was over a little time to refresh in the Green Dragon and then back we headed again Paul interacting with the group until we were all delivered back to our collection points all in all a great day
Even if you are not a fan of the film this is one not to miss, even if it is just to see the work involved in setting this unique film set up and take in the scenery
Auckland and Beyond Tours are ideal company to take you on your way
THANK YOU TO ALL AT A&BT

Truly amazing experience, we were picked up precisely on time and enjoyed the ride down to Hobbiton with Jason pointing out points of interest along the way, on arrival we had time for a bite to eat before commencing the tour, The tour itself was fantastic, our guide Nicolas was clearly a Tolkien fan and had lots of stories about the production. The new, open, Hobbit holes are works of art with attention to the tiniest detail, wonderful. Our return trip with Jason was excellent, the van was comfortable, roomy and clearly driven by the best driver in the company, I would highly recommend this tour

Our tour guide, Warren (Wazza), was incredibly knowledgeable about the local areas that we passed through on the way and kept the group entertained with his humour. He was very good at explaining exactly what to expect once we arrived at the location and kept everything running smoothly. The minibus was very comfortable and had air conditioning and WiFi on board, as well as snacks.
There are quite a few companies doing tours like this so it can be difficult to know which ones are good and also value for money. I would definitely recommend this company as they easily ticked both of these boxes for me. You will not be disappointed!

Big shoutout to Peter, my tour guide who cared about ensuring I had the best day. Being a solo female traveller, he ensured my safety, comfort and gave me priceless advice on what to expect, how to keep safe and how I can make the most of my time in Auckland. He never rushed me before or after the tour, and along the way to Hobbiton he would share interesting facts on Hobbiton and the Waikato Region.
Auckland Beyond tours were also extremely prompt with their responses, and also were on time with their pick up (which was also a very comfortable Mercedes Van for the 2 hr drive).
Would 100% recommend the experience if you are looking to sit back, relax and have Auckland and Beyond tours take care of everything for you (especially if you are not looking to drive around the north island with a limited amount of time).
If you ever see this review Peter - Thanks for being a legend 💯🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Unforgettable tour!
The landscape is very beautiful, it really was the film set, it is very well preserved in every detail. It's impossible not to remember the film The Lord of the Rings. Even if you haven't seen it yet, the trip is worth it, because of the beauty and the enchantment. The guide explains each scenario, remembering the film.
At the end of the tour, you even try a glass of their beer, which was delicious.
Lunch was well organized, where they advised which tables should be served, as there were a lot of people at the time.

Wow. What a fabulous half day tour!
I booked the Hobbiton Tour from Auckland CBD online with a couple of days notice. I was contacted the day before confirming pick up time and location, and on the day itself my driver and guide, Peter, was waiting outside ahead of time for me.
It’s about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Auckland to Hobbiton in the comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes passenger van and the drive is spectacular. Peter had water for us in the van but we stopped off en-route for coffee, a bathroom breaks and to stretch our legs before continuing on to Hobbiton.
Peter was incredibly friendly and full of fascinating information about Auckland and it’s surrounding area on our drive. Upon arriving at Hobbiton he sorted out our entrance and explained a little about what the tour includes before handing us off to the Hobbiton staff for our 09:10 tour.
The tour is roughly 2 hours and Peter looked after any belongings you didn’t want to take on the meander around the film set. After it’s complete you have time for a bite to eat in the cafe or look around the shop and it’s back in the van for the return journey to Auckland where you’re dropped off at the door.
I knew I wanted to visit Hobbiton on my short stay in Auckland so I visited their website and it links to several tour operators who provide half day tours and more. Auckland & Beyond caught my eye and I cannot rate them highly enough. I will definitely be using them on my next visit to explore more of what the North Island has to offer. You will not be disappointed. Huge thanks to Auckland & Beyond and especially Peter!

Had an enjoyable and fuss free tour of the lovely Hobbiton. The end of winter morning drive from Auckland city to Hobbiton was also enjoyable, helped greatly by the soothing audio guide (live) given by our guide Adil who has a great sense of humor and resourceful to help troubleshoot when WiFi was not working. As for Hobbiton itself, it was way better than I had imagined and definitely worth the trip.

Highly recommend hobbiton, it was so fun!! The attention to detail is just amazing, and the guide leader through hobbiton was so fun and animated!... wish I remembered her name but at hobbiton you can't choose the guide anyways as they're assigned based on timeslot.
The driver to hobbiton was ok, Angelo was his name i believe. His voice was a little too soothing through the hours long drive- put me to sleep. But I primarily choose this particular tour for the roundtrip transport and 6am timeslot, so those purposes were met.

Haere mai and thank you for your wonderful review! We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your Hobbiton experience. The level of detail on the set is indeed incredible, and it’s great that you found the guide so fun and animated. It’s true, guides are assigned based on the timeslot, but each one brings their own special touch to the tour!
We also appreciate your feedback on Angelo—his calming voice certainly helps make the scenic drive a peaceful experience. We’re happy that the early 6am departure and round-trip transport worked well for you.
Ngā mihi nui (many thanks) for sharing your experience! We hope to welcome you back again soon for another unforgettable tour!

Hobbiton is magical place, our driver Paolo was prompt friendly and professional, it was a very early start, water and snacks provided. Booking process was easy and contact made the afternoon before to confirm pick up location and time.
My only gripe is they filled the van completely, was a bit cramped especially for a 2hr drive. For the price paid expected a bit more comfort
