About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- elizabethgU7517QA0 contributionsThe most amazing day!! Redwood tree walk and geysers!!We chose the Redwood forests tree climb along with the geysers! It was a beautiful walk through the redwoods. We then had a tour of the Maori Art Institute, saw the Kiwi bird, and enjoyed a spectacular lunch overlooking the geysers. After lunch we toured the bubbling mud and geysers. They are amazing! I didn’t want to leave! Our tour guide, Daryl, was the most knowledgeable guide! He shared the history of New Zealand with us, showed us the silver ferns, and provides us with the best day we could have ever asked for!! If you do this tour, be sure to request Daryl as your guide!!Written October 11, 2024
- M6320QC_0 contributionsWai o tapuSpecial sights , an enjoyable day, full of amazing colors: starting with Ladi Knox Geyser, than astonising colors of the geothermal area in waiotapu ( along with the distinctive smell :-) ), Huka falls and lake Taupo. Our guide- Sandra- was very proffessional, made the tour enlightening and fun, paid attention and accordingly adjusted the tour to our specific group needs, and made the day most enjoyable.Written September 29, 2024
- ruoyuy20240 contributionsPerfect experience to Rotorua and WaitomoThe trip to Waitapu and Waitomo is so great and definitely worth the price. Hermes and Edson help us with everything. Hermes shows us every beautiful scenery while on our way. Something interesting about diary cows and sheep and the nature. Edson takes us to the Waitomo trip and drive us back to Auckland. Waitomo is something you never want to miss. We also visit a dam somewhere in the nearby town, which is so beautiful! Recommend!Written September 29, 2024
- ruoyuy20240 contributionsPerfect experience to explore RotoruaThe Rotorua Escape tour is fantastic! Happy to meet Petez and have him with us. We have learnt so many things about New Zealand during the trip, and he pointed us to every small spot that has good scenery or interesting things to know. Te Puia looks great and the buffet is good. There are breaks between each item, which is perfect. Do recommend!Written September 29, 2024
- thomashP6158GJ0 contributionsRotarura and WaitomoSuch a fantastic experience and a brilliant way to see NZ. Everyone at FlexitoursNZ were amazing including Pete and Jenny. Such a calm and friendly environment they create and definitely would book back with them again when in NZWritten August 13, 2024
- Karinb23110 contributionsMade memories that will last for years! This tour was an absolutely wonderful experience! I appreciated the slower pace of getting to explore different areas of Rotorua (geothermal spots, stunning lake overlooks, redwood forest) in the morning. The buffet lunch was really lovely with nice food that I don't think you could get except in the nicest restaurants. The afternoon activities were by far my favorite, with the Māori cultural show and the grounds tour. The cultural show included beautiful singing and dancing with brief explanations of the meanings of the various elements, which made it so memorable. And the grounds tour was also great. We saw hot mud springs, exploding geysers and Kiwi birds. One of my favorite elements was seeing the school and watching the students and tutors carve wood/stone and weave baskets. The cultural elements made for an experience that you literally could not get anywhere but in New Zealand. And I must end by sharing how incredible our tour guide Pete was! He was very lovely to talk to and answered all of our questions, definitely not relying on a script. It was so meaningful to have a guide of Māori descent to give us further insight into this beautiful country. He even told us a beautiful Māori legend on the drive home, and I truly feel so lucky and privileged that he shared it with us. This tour was one I will not forget, and I would highly recommend it!Written June 26, 2024
- Ausquaka0 contributionsA must do experience!!!It was a long day, but very much worth it to see such an amazing part of New Zealand. Chris was a fabulous driver and kept us all on our toes. The pictures don’t do justice to the amazing sites of Rotorua. TE PUIA, the Māori cultural experiences was very informative and getting to see both Kiwi’s was pretty cool. Lunch was delicious and everyone was so wonderful and welcoming.Written June 22, 2024
- HSLEE_20240 contributionsAmazing Day trip! The day trip was perfect, especially thanks to our guide, Jenny. She was an experienced guide and was absolutely fantastic! The scenery was breathtaking, and her explanations were very professional. I strongly recommend this day trip. It was well worth it!Written May 31, 2024

- Q2112YHstephanieh0 contributions10/10 experience for LOTR Nerds and Nerd NerdsAmazing! We lucked out in that we were the only people on our tour, so we had such an enjoyable personal experience with our FlexiToursNZ guides (Edson and Jenny). Both were so knowledgeable, friendly, and lovely. We also lucked out with the tour guides we had at Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves, as they made the tours so enjoyable. Overall great experience, would recommend.Written May 24, 2024
- Resort653631919980 contributionsA rare find!We had an absolutely wonderful time on our trip to Rotorua. While the travel time was long, our guide, Louise, kept us thoroughly entertained with her expertise on local landmarks, Māori history and mythology, and current events in New Zealand. We couldn’t believe 3 hours had gone by when we arrived! Once we arrived in Rotorua, Louise realized that our first planned activity to view the lake would not be best, as the lake was covered entirely in fog at the time. So instead, she changed our guided tour at Te Puia to an earlier time, allowing us the ability to view the lake later in the afternoon. We appreciated her quick thinking and flexibility to allow us the best possible experience! Of course, Te Puia itself was awesome, and we enjoyed the Māori cultural performance as our add-on activity. We would highly recommend visiting Te Puia with FlexiTours NZ!Written May 5, 2024
- parag20240 contributionsExpensive day trip to RotoruaThe day was fine. I think for the money I paid there should have been more activities included in the itinerary. We were taken to Whakarawarewa only. While the tour in there was good and informative, there was nothing planned after lunch. An Impromptu visit to Goverment Gardens was offerd to us in the afternoon. I must say the lunch was very good and had many selections.Written April 29, 2024
- MumbaiRiders0 contributions"Rotorua and Waitomo Caves " day tour with " "Flexi Tours NZ"We were a total of 10 tourists of different nationalities, all families except for a young Japanese lady and myself travelling with "Flexi Tours NZ" to "Rotorua and Waitomo" caves. Our Driver/ Guide Mr Edson of Brazilian descent was hilarious and very informative throughout the 226 Km drive from Auckland CBD to Rotorua that began at 0645 hrs . Had booked the " Rotorua & Waitomo caves " tour costing NZ$ 455 at the "Flexi Tours NZ" office in Queens Arcade. At 0945 hrs we were finally at the entrance gate of "Te Puia ,Rotorua Geothermal park ".In a group tour everything is planned to the scheduled timing and our tour slot was allotted for 1000 hrs as prior booking is essential .Our guide took us on a walking tour and our first visit was to the "Kiwi Enclosure" where a pair of New Zealand's national bird the Kiwi are kept under "Nocturnal viewing " conditions. After the Kiwi enclosure visit our next stop was the "Mud Pools" having bubbling hot mud releasing Sulphuric fumes. Next was the amazing sight of the "POHUTU GEYSER" .The Geyser was spouting steam akin to a fountain and the surrounding ground was also emitting steam vapor in small quantities. After viewing the Pohutu Geyser from a distance we were transported by a toy train to the main entrance gate. Our next visit was to the building housing the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute an indigenous traditional art school. It operates the national schools of three major Māori art forms. After viewing the artisans at work we next had a "Buffet Lunch" in the grand dining hall of Te Puia ,Rotorua Geothermal park . After lunch we boarded our Mercedes Mini bus and headed to Waitomo Caves. On the way we stopped at Government Gardens.Originally known as Paepaekumana, the Government Gardens are situated on the lake Rotorua's edge in downtown Rotorua. At 1520 hrs reached the entrance gates of Waitomo caves. Again there was a large tourist crowd and our guided tour slot was at 1530 hrs.Our tour guide Ms Cheryl was a Maori descendant of the original discoverer's of these caves over a 100 years ago. This entire Waitomo caves is now owned by the Maori trust and the employees are descendants of the original founder's of this cave tourism.Photography inside the caves is strictly prohibited and before entering the cave a professional photographer takes a photo of each visitor, a common routine at most tourist sites across the Globe.Entering the caves we were transported into a different subterranean World.Beautiful Stalactites and Stalagmites and very well preserved. We finally came into a cave chamber called the " Cathedral" whose natural acoustics was excellent and a Maori lady sang a traditional Maori song in this chamber .We got our first glimpse of the " Glow Worms" in a corner of this chamber with the subterranean stream flowing below. We finally boarded the small boat and were rowed across the narrow channel inside the cave. The cave ceiling resembled a night sky with stars shining bright as the glow worms illuminated the cave ceiling with their glowing bodies. After the boat ride we began our long almost 3 hrs journey back to Auckland finally reaching Sky Tower in Auckland at 1945 hrs. End of a very expensive but thoroughly educative and scenic tour of the New Zealand countryside and Rotorua Thermal springs along with WAitomo caves.Written April 21, 2024

I found our guides, Pete and Herms to be knowledgeable, friendly & engaging and, although a long day, a very enjoyable one! Highly recommend.Written March 30, 2024

What an amazing experience!
My specific tour was two days long so it was an overnight and many, many details. The owner, Phillipa, was completely on point with making sure I got to the many points I needed to get to.
The gentleman who drove us there was phenomenal individual. Conversation, conviviality, humor, manners, and most of all safety.
In a country thousands of miles from home with no one, I knew, I have to say I felt completely taken care of from point a to point Z l, as if I were around my family!

2-days to remember! FlexiTours made it possible to give us an unforgettable trip, with all sorts of cultural insights. Māori concert with dinner was an incredible experience. Our trip even included a trip to Orakei Korako on day two. Thank you Andy, Zane and Kelly for your great guidance.

Note Our tour was customized 3 day tour:
Right from our first communication with FlexiTours, I knew this was going to be an awesome tour. We were very impressed with Philippa's immediate responses to our requests for information for a customized 3 days / 2 nights tour roundtrip from Auckland to Rotorua with stops at Hobbiton and Waitomo glow worm caves. We simply provided a list of what we wanted to do and see, and it was all put together by FlexiTours.
When we arrived in Auckland we visited FlexiTours office to make final payment. Tui in the office took the time to explain the tour from start to finish. We had a free afternoon that same day and Tui was able to book us on a half-day Auckland city tour. Perfect!
The drivers to and from Rotorua, Vic and Fran, were wonderful and very knowledgeable with all of the answers to our many questions along the way. These drivers, Auckland - Rotorua and return, are on a tight schedule. As a courtesy to others, don't be late for your pickup times.
David, our driver during our time in Rotorua, was also very knowledgeable, made a slight adjustment to our tours in Rotorua so that we would have time to visit the Polynesian Spa, and made us feel very special as it seemed that most of the time we had our own personal chauffeur!
The hotel was included and we were originally told that we would stay in the Sudima, however this was changed to a smaller hotel, Jet Park, which was perfect for us! The staff there made us feel like family and upon arrival they came to our room with us to ensure that we had everything we needed. The included breakfast was impressive and top quality. There were no cooked items but plenty of options. We walked over to the Sudima and so happy that we did not stay in such a big hotel.
Upon return to Auckland we wanted to go directly to our hotel near the airport. FlexiTours do not drop off at hotels outside Auckland CBD, however Philippa arranged for us to be dropped off just off the highway with another vehicle waiting to take us to our hotel for a small additional cost.
Not to be missed: Hobbiton, Matai Maori Concert and Dinner, Wai-o-Tapu thermal wonderland
I would highly recommend FlexiTours

I went through Viator tours and they used flexitoursNZ. Excellent service. On time, knowledgeable, friendly and flexible. A great combination for a tour company. I highly recommend the Mitai performance and dinner, best cultural show I have ever seen. All of the activities were of high quality and spending overnight was a good way to stretch out the activities. Excellent all around

We just completed a 2-night 3-day "Hobbiton and everything but the kitchen sink" FlexiToursNZ excursion. What a fantastic experience! Our family of four was in good hands with FlexiTours. We simply hopped aboard our comfortable van and enjoyed the ride, grateful to avoid the challenge of driving on the other side of the road and able to enjoy the scenery out the windows, stress-free. Our driver from Auckland to Hobbiton and Rotorura, Louise, entertained us with her deep knowledge of the region all along the ride down, answering each question we lobbed at her, even through a rainstorm. The weather was perfect by the time we reached Hobbiton, and Louise took care to give us crystal clear directions on when and where to meet her at the end. In Rotorura, she tossed in a short side trip to a historic bath house and the lake before our next destination, Te Puia geothermal park, and a delicious buffet lunch. FlexiTours set up our overnight accommodation at Jet Park hotel and was precisely on time to pick us up the next morning, for a full day of geothermal adventures. On day two of our tour, we were driven by Cathy and treated to her local knowledge. We visited a bubbling mud pot, a rushing waterfall, a stunning geothermal park--Waiotapu--and a lakeside town where we enjoyed lunch with a view. Noticing how much we loved the first geothermal park, Cathy added a side trip to a smaller park, which ended up being a highlight of our day. Day three of our tour was rainy, but we were in excellent hands with Edson, who drove us over rolling, sheep-dotted hills in a rainstorm with utter confidence. Our visit that day to Waitomo Caves was not to be missed! A stunning display of nature's wonders as we floated in darkness and silence under a ceiling of glowing bioluminescence. The mood aboard our FlexiTours vans was friendly and convivial, and we felt safe and welcomed. I have only glowing things to say about FlexiTours. They made travel easy!

The Hobbiton and Waitamo caves tours were great. Te Puia was a really great experience as well. However, the two day tour was too much of the same thing. It was nice to see the geothermal activity and Rotorua, but we could have completed the tour of Te Puia quicker than the 2-3 hours they gave us. Also we saw some of the same sites of Rotorua with different tour guides and the Wai-O-Tapu tour was a lot of the same sites (for the undiscerning traveller) as Te Puia. Flexi was on time an efficient.

Hi,
Thank you for taking the time to write your review.
Alot of Rotorua is all about the thermal areas, the geysers mud pools etc and it can feel like the same thing however a lot of these areas are very different in how they were created and how they were used back in the day.
Glad to hear our drivers were time efficient a lot of our tours are on a very tight time scheduled and require a lot of pre planning in order to achieve so many activities into one day tours and overnight tours.
Safe travels,
Daniel

My review is mixed.
Pros
Initial communication was responsive via email.
They were willing to build a trip per my requests which I appreciated.
Some drivers were informative, friendly and interesting - I think I had 5 different drivers in 2 days.
Cons
Other drivers were not interesting or they drove too fast or took you around to non interesting places
The communication about my itinerary (which was somewhat complicated) was lacking. There was no detail in it. For example I was going to the spa and had no idea how long I would be there, when I would go nor if I had time to change at my hotel before I went. That evening they sent a cab driver to pick me up for one of my activities when I was supposed to be on the Mercedes small bus vans- luckily the cab driver was delightful but I felt a bit vulnerable as a single older woman. I had 2 days with flexi and the first driver seemed clueless about what I was doing. I was confused and anxious when he said he was taking another person to Hobbiton and I was going elsewhere -as I had signed up for Hobbitown I was concerned! The good news is I got there the next day but I needlessly worried I wasn’t going to see it. They also rushed me when I got there - I had about 5 minutes to explore the gift shop! I could have been picked up earlier and had more time.

This tour ended up being a mix for us. On one hand, our three drivers (Edson, Dallas, and Keith) over two days were very friendly and accommodating, the Waitomo Caves tour, Hobbiton tour, and free time around Rotorua were all amazing. On the other, you could tell that the central organizers of logistics were not on their game for us.
We were picked up a little after 6:30am on June 30th after being told to be be ready to go by 6:30am. From there, our first driver told us we were already running behind, as my wife and I were going to be handed off to another driver in Matamata to go to Waitomo caves, then back to Te Puia for lunch. It seems like us being behind 30 minutes was because of the rendezvous so far East, only to have to go all the way back West to the caves, then back East again. As a result, we were a little rushed at the Caves (though the tour was still great and we had enough time to buy our photos and a magnet), but very rushed to eat lunch at Te Puia (we had about 25 minutes to eat at the buffet before heading on the walking tour).
The Te Puia tour was pretty cool. We learned about Maori culture, saw Kiwi birds, steam vents, crafts being created as part of the Maori school, and the food at the buffet lunch was also pretty good. From there, we were taken to our JetPark hotel to settle in before being picked up to go to the Mitai Maori village for a traditional Hangi meal and cultural show. Think luau, but the Maori version.
The show was really well done, starting with the war canoe river intro, followed by the enclosed chief welcome, and then various dances and songs that were interesting and fun. We really enjoyed that. Then we were brought back into the food hall to have the buffet food, which was largely like a Thanksgiving variation with chicken, lamb, roasted potatoes and veggies, fish chowder, bread, some salad, gravy, and then dessert later (Pavlova, chocolate cake, hot vanilla custard, coffee, tea). There was also a paid bar with wine, beer, and spirits, but because dinner was so late and whirlwind with the buffet, don't plan on having too many drinks.
Following that we had the Q&A, which was interesting, and then a pointless walk in the rain back down to the river and up to the buses to allegedly see glowworms, but without umbrellas (they ran out) and pouring rain, we didn't see any and just tried to avoid getting super soaked.
After that, we were driven back to our hotel for a terrible night because the Air Conditioning ended up pumping hot, sulfurous (because of the nearby sulfur steam vents) air into the room despite being set to 16 degrees. We woke up at midnight to the hot, smelly room and just turned off the unit until it cooled down because none of the windows opened and obviously messing with the controller wasn't going to do anything.
Our itinerary for the next day said to be ready after breakfast (continental, pretty unimpressie) by 7:30am, so we were, but we ended up getting picked up at around 8am to head to Hobbiton (an extra 30 minutes to sleep and pack up would have been nice). There we arrived early, in time for the 9:40am tour, so we had a creme-filled cronut and latte while we waited to queue up for the tour. From there, we were bused to Hobbiton and had a beautiful tour of The Shire, sunny and cool, ending with a tasty beer at The Green Dragon. Loved it.
After that, Keith said we could do whatever we wanted until we needed to get to the Rotorua airport at 3pm for our flight to Wellington. We thought there would be more of an itinerary, but he recommended a locals-known sandwich place called Ciabatta for lunch (very tasty), followed by us selecting to take the skyline/gondola up a nearby mountain to take in some views and do a wine tasting at the Volcanic Winery tasting room. That was awesome, and then we made our way down the mountain and were ushered to the airport for drop-off.
All in all, it was a nice tour, but the logistics issues with running late, being rushed, getting picked up at different times than designated in the itinerary, a hotel room without working Air Conditioning, etc. did put a damper on the experience.

Hi - Your tour was specially scheduled to meet your requirements of flying out of Rotorua on the 2nd afternoon and the activities turned around to meet this need. orally you would have a completely free morning on the 2nd day but b because of the change of schedule you had a couple of extra hours in the afternoon between Hobbiton and your flight. I assigned a driver to you at no additional cost but what he and you did with this time was not scheduled as it was not part of tour.
We do not as a matter of course go to Waitomo first because it can cause issues with timing
I am sorry you were not happy with Jet Park - We normally get great reviews on the rooms and the breakfast and people requesting to go back there.
I am glad you enjoyed most of the tour
Regards
Philippa

I arrived in Auckland with no idea what to see or do. Called FlexiTours NZ and after describing my situation and time frame, Phillipa was able to put together a custom tour including a wine tour day trip, followed by a tour to Hobbiton, Rotorua, Waitomo Caves & Spellbound Caves, as well as 2 different Maori cultural experiences, and a trip to the Polynesian Spa! She even coordinated with another tour operator in order to allow me to stay in Rotorua a little longer! The drivers, Andy, Ramon and Dallas, were terrific, like having a personal friend along with me!
I'm so glad to I called!

I was happy to help and so pleased when you told me you had never been on an organised tour before and you were so impressed you did the same thing in Australia. We try to listen and as much as possible try and give people whst they are looking for.

Hi!
We are a French couple and we would very much join a group to do the tour from this saturday the 7th of March.
We have a 8-months son who is adorable.
Unfortunately, I read that this tour was unconvenient for children under 2 years old.
I wish you could allow us.
Otherwise, would you be so kind as to let me know the price of the private tour?
Thanks
Antoine

Hi, when does the tour finish in Waitomo, as might want to stay in Rotorua? Thanks!

If you are doing the 2 day tour, the first day will end in Rotorua and you will spend the evening and the first half of the second day there. The tour company will pick you around 1PM on day 2 and take you to Waitomo before heading back to Auckland.
