- Adventure3098040 contributionsCruise was GREAT; food was mediocre! The crew was a trio of friendly 20 somethings who were attentive and entertaining. The food was mediocre, but the cruise around the harbor was beautiful! The commentary was just enough and the crew played fun songs to sing along to. We had a patch of downpour and each cruiser was provided a thick sailing raincoat. As long as you don’t set expectations too high for food quality (we had the fish of the day and pumpkin dish as entrees and the coffee and coconut desserts; people who had the chocolate cake said that it was AMAZING), you’ll love the experience.Written December 28, 2024
- 510rjg0 contributionsCold, Boring, Mediocre FoodDinner cruise in Nov is cold, even wearing layers and blankets provided. No commentary on the harbor. Food was mediocre. Got this as a gift and I really wished we were on a bigger boat in the Explore selection.Written November 30, 2024
- October-stay-20220 contributionsCommentary? What commentary? The weather was good, the crew assistants were excellent, and very attentive. The food was great. Obviously it was cold, but we were warmly dressed and blankets were provided. I was disappointed in the fact that the overview for this cruise states: "Set out aboard a sailing yacht from Viaduct Harbour and learn about Auckland and its iconic sights from your captain. Listen to entertaining and informative commentary from your experienced captain." We purposely took this trip so that my overseas friend could learn about Auckland and the iconic sights. Although polite when spoken to, the Captain offered nothing at all. If we asked what something was, we got a short response and no more. After dinner we just went up and down the harbour, killing time to the point that we were bored and just wanted to get off. Nice music playing - but we had no clue of anything we were looking at. That was most disappointing, as the overview is misguided.Written October 4, 2024

- staceysB8521ZQ0 contributionsFantastic experience!!Had been so looking forward to this and was not disappointed!! We had Skipper Peter & Charlie on board Defiance and I didn't want it to end! When I asked if I could have a photo taken next to the steering wheel they said to get in behind the wheel and let me steer for a while. The ocean is my 'happy place' where all stress melts away and should I return to Auckland anytime soon, I would do this experience again as it's priced reasonably. Thanks for the great time! :-)Written March 11, 2024
- 14erBaggers0 contributionsExperience this activity in the City of Sails! What a surprisingly fun and beautiful experience!! We sailed with Captain Peter and his mate Joe and had a wonderful time. My husband talked me into doing this excursion since Auckland is called the City of Sails but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. They served us sodas or juice or their New Zealand soda LNP, which is like carbonated lemonade. I recommend the LNP to experience a local soda as it was refreshing and delicious. We had a beautiful sail and all of the kids and even some of the adults were able to ‘drive’ the sailboat which was a great picture. We would definitely do this again!Written March 9, 2024
- drc690 contributionsNice relaxing time on the waterOur first full day in Auckland and NZ itself so we chose to go on a sailing boat round the harbour. Nice relaxing morning sailing up past the naval area and commercial port and then down towards the Harbour Bridge, anybody who wanted a go at the wheel was able to do so which was a good photo opportunity!Written March 6, 2024
- GCKJA0 contributionsSo fun, we’d do it again! This was such a fantastic experience. It was relaxing to o be on the water and enjoy the views. The captain and deck hand were professional and welcoming. Guests could take a turn at the wheel, which was cool. One of the guests had trouble finding the meeting point, delaying our departure. The captain asked if we could wait for the guest and we all agreed. I thought that was very kind and it didn’t shorten our sailing time. I would absolutely do this again.Written March 2, 2024

I will definitely recommend this activity to my friends and family, attached some photos I took on the trip. We were in Auckland about a week before lockdown started, so already tourism was down as cruise ships were no longer coming into the city. There was only about 10 of us along with 4 crew. We were advised that there might not be enough wind for us to sail but we would give it a go. Luckliy the wind picked up and we had a great time, we were able to forget about the situation around us for 2 hours and actually enjoy ourselves, you could be involved as much you wanted to be, or just relax and enjoy the ride. The crew were really good, really engaging and we really hope that business picks up for them again as soon as possible.

I was skeptical about a 25 year old retrofitted America’s Cup boat being much of a sail. Was I wrong. In a light breeze and with 19 guests and crew we flew through the Harbor in relatively light winds. Crew was so friendly and fun. We were having such a great sail that crew extended about 30/40 minutes so we could go under Auckland Harbour Bridge at full tilt and watch bungee jumpers. They also let us sail the boat. Weather was perfect too.

If you have ever been on the starting line in a sailboat race (it doesn’t matter if you were in an Optimist Pram or an Olympic class racer) you must try to schedule this experience. Explore is a top notch outfit and they only schedule two match races a week. The race is very participatory (mostly working the grinders or spinnaker retrieval) but it’s a real race. The wind was about 14 knots and perfect for us. Six professionals did all the thinking and we happily followed their commands. Skipper Brad won both races for the white team.

Family of four on the same boat, heeled over at 45 degrees screaming across the water at 15 knots. How cool is that. The crew was superb. As others have said...this is not a harbor cruise but a first hand experience of what it is like on a true racing yacht. Bring your water, leave your bags on the shore and prepare to grind away on the wenches and hold on.

Last April we boarded a cruise from Sydney, Australia, that stopped in New Zealand, Tahiti, and ended in Honolulu. We rarely take excursions while on a cruise, but as a person who loved to sail years ago, the chance to sail on an America's Cup racing boat through the Aukland harbour sounded too exciting to pass up. We booked directly through the Explorer group, which seemed sensible and was cheaper than booking through the ship, of course. The reason we decided to travel from Vancouver to Australia and New Zealand this year, is because I am going blind. I have very little sight left, so we knew that time was running out for me to see this distant part of the world. Our cruise ship docked right in the Aukland harbour, and we walked by to see our ship in the morning. Our tour was booked for 1 p.m. We were impressed with the size of the boat and had a pleasant chat about the afternoon tour with one of the crew members working onboard. We raced around several blocks of downtown Aukland, then back to our ship so we could dress for our tour. We arrived on time, to find only one, sad-looking, person at the top of the marina. A young woman informed us that the Tour Was Cancelled! We were dumbstruck. We asked the reason, expecting an emergency or onboard malfunction, but they said that there were not enough people signed up!! How is this our problem? We booked weeks ago, paid in full, and travelled half way around the world, for my last chance to see New Zealand, from a sailing ship or from anywhere!! We will never be back there again, and to make matters worse, they must have known, days earlier, or at least That Day, that they might decide not to sail. Instead they told us less than 3 hours before our cruise was to leave N.Z.! We could have booked any number of tours to at least see the local sites, but now it was too late! All the tour operators were gone and any afternoon buses etc. were full. How incredibly thoughtless, callous and selfish can this company be?! It's what they advertise and at least there were 5 people signed up - so what if you make a little less profit for a 2 hour tour?! It is not that they couldn't sail, they just couldn't be bothered for too few people. Again, not my problem - and you took my money weeks ago. The poor young woman who had no answers (she was left there on her own. We were told that no employees or crew were available to speak with us...) and just had to repeat the bad news, kept assuring us that we would get a "full refund". Yes, I said, that is My money - you're not giving me anything. In fact you're taking away our only chance to sail or explore any part of Aukland. It sounded good on paper - a longtime dream finally realized, but NO. Buyer beware! Apparently they have plenty of business, so they don't care who they disappoint, and thus this poor review might make little difference, but I write so future tourists will weigh the risks. I hope you are treated much better than this.

This is a great value for money experience and an enjoyable way to see the harbor and learn about this class of sailboats. It was more thrilling than I expected and more physical for those that wanted that experience (i.e., leaning and hoisting sails on command). If you want to sit and enjoy along the side of the ship, you can definitely do that. My kids enjoyed it (especially when we went under the Auckland Bridge and when we were cruising full speed in the harbor and leaning F A R to one side). Our photos and videos look fantastic. The crew (staff) was friendly, booking was straight-forward and it was easy to find the boarding point. If this looks like somehting you're interested in - go for it. My kids are 10 and it was a fantastic way to get to know Auckland.

What a wonderful way to spend a morning. Julia, Luke , Jaz and Zak were wonderful knowledgeable hosts who were the icing on my birthday cake!
This is the only way to see Auckland! Aboard a yacht with an interesting racing pedigree, crewed by an experienced bunch of charming sailors, each living their dream. Love the skipper, Julia’s enthusiasm and very amusing anecdotes: yes fella’s: SHE is the skipper!!
They were very inclusive, encouraging even the ‘wobbliest’ of passengers to helm, ensuring that everyone participated in steering this beautiful craft regardless of age, fitness and experience.
Thank you for giving me the magical of mornings and insuring me to follow in my late husbands shoes and to take to the water again.

Have just done the 2 hour America’s cup sail on Auckland harbour.
It was a great experience. We have never sailed before but we still able to get involved.
The crew were all great, friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
It wasn’t very windy but we were still able to get up some good speed.
It’s not cheap but definitely worth it.

About a 4 to 5 hour sail on the 1997 America's Cup boat. Briefing and we are off. Crew (everyone is asked to help crew the handles) to raise the sail. Then once underway all who want get to sail the ship (under the watchful eye of our captain). Two boats, 4 crew each and 24 guests (us) on each boat. So we get to race. It was great and we were dry the whole time. The crew interacted with each guest and helped those inexperienced learn, they would point to folks to get them to come up and take the wheel. They stayed with you so you didn't got hurt and no one else did. Bring sunblock.

It was more fun than expected. I thought it might be a real tame and boring ride around the harbor but they actually got the boat up to a fairly exciting speed with it leaned right over. We were lucky to have a perfect day with a nice breeze and clear skies. I wouldn't bother if its pouring rain or dead calm day. Anyone who wanted were able to participate as crew by manning the hand cranks to hoist and lower the sails as well as driving for a bit. Tip... there is no toilet on the boat so make sure to go before boarding. The crew were fun and gave lots of interesteing info about the boat, sailing, racing etc. Well worth it!

Is it possible to be guaranteed that we would be on NZL41? We are sailors and would love to sail on an actual 12 meter that was raced in the America's Cup. Please let me know as I want to get this booked. Thanks.
