A piece of paradise in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Perth, Rottnest Island is a favorite day trip getaway due to its white-sand beaches, isolated turquoise bays, biking paths and vehicle-free environment. Travel to the island on the high-speed ferry from either Perth or Fremantle—make your choice when booking. Then spend your time on the island however you please before returning the same day by ferry. Popular activities include snorkeling, biking and looking for quokkas, the resident wildlife.
What to Expect
Your Rottnest Island ferry departs from either Perth or Fremantle, depending on option selected when booking. If leaving from Perth, you’ll cruise down the Swan River through the city to reach Fremantle, from where it’s a 25-minute ride across the ocean to Rotto, as it’s known to locals.

When you arrive, you are free to explore the island—and its 63 beaches and 20 bays—however you wish. There are plenty of spots to get wet with a swim, snorkel, stand-up paddleboard or surf, or just relax on the sand and watch yachts bobbing in the water. The most popular activity for visitors is renting a bike on the island to cruise leisurely along the scenic roads, where no cars are allowed. If you’re interested in history, check out sites like Lomas Cottage, Rottnest Island Museum, Pilot Boathouse or the Salt Store and Exhibition Centre. And don’t forget to keep your eyes open for wildlife, particularly the island’s native quokkas. (All entrance fees, activities, rentals, food and drinks are at your own expense.)

At the end of your full day on the island, head back to Fremantle or Perth on the return ferry.

Travel to and from Rottnest

Ferry on time. Reliable. Staff accommodating. We walked but many chose to hire bikes stored on ferry, to explore island. Ferry everything you need.

The only transport are bicycles or buses. There is a hop on hop off service. If you’re young and fit (we are neither), the bikes are very popular. You can pre book tours online; book on the ferry; or book at the information... More
