Beautiful day but exhausting
I would highly suggest the Rottnest Express with bike hire. However it does need to be known that a good amount of fitness is required and in most spots around the island there isn't a great deal of shade. So on hot days, prepare your bike ride/walk.

Thank you for the review and for the recommendation. It is important to be prepared when heading out on your bike for the day, taking lots of water and sun protection.

Check bikes before leaving
Jan 2021
Definitely check that your bike is working well before you leave the jetty. One of ours was completely rusted at the back and the back wheel stopped turning properly halfway around the island. They were nice people, and they gave us a refund, but the bikes could leave you stranded 10km from anywhere. Fairly uncomfortable bikes too.

Hello, we are sorry you didn't have the best experience with our bike hire service. We do have a team who are continually servicing, testing, and fixing our bikes so I do apologise that yours was not up to our usual standard.

Journey was pleasant there but choppy on the way back. Great service by the staff on board! Bike hire included which made it easy to collect and use.

Poor communication
Aug 2020 • Solo
I booked a ticket for ferry pass with bike hire. I was told to collect my bike from the Jetty. I was not told to collect it from the actual ferry upon docking. By the time i wandered about looking for where to collect it and walked down to the bike hire shack the ferry left with my bike still on board. An almost two hour wait for the ferry to return and a Rottnest Express customer service rep who repeatedly talked over me when I was asking for help made for a really unpleasant experience. Do yourself a favour and hire from the bike shack instead. Friendly staff, just as cheap and a lot easier to deal with.

Hi X4650SYlaurab, We're sorry to hear of the mixup when you were trying to collect your hire bikes. Our hire bikes are required to be carried on the ferry with you to Rottnest Island which is why it is listed on our website to "Collect your bike as soon as you disembark the ferry and ride away!" As the ferry departs Rottnest to return to the mainland an hour after arrival, it is necessary to collect your hire equipment soon as you arrive so the staff onboard make announcements over the PA system advising all guests to collect any equipment upon arrival, regardless of whether it's hire or personal equipment, and it is included on your email confirmation "Upon arrival to Rottnest Island, present your voucher to the Rottnest Express staff on the jetty to collect your hire bike. It is compulsory under Western Australian law to wear a bike helmet so be sure to grab your helmet before leaving the jetty." We do hope you were able to enjoy the rest of your day on Rottnest Island. Thanks, Michelle

Great bike ride..but didn't leave enough time to do the whole island and have a swim! Great opportunities for bird-watching and to see the tern nesting site.

Hi Discover64106403453, We're glad to know you made it around the island and spotted birds as you went around. On average it does take around 3.5 hours to cycle around the whole island so it's best to set aside about 5 hours if you wish to stop for a swim along the way. We look forward to seeing you next time. Thanks, Michelle

Excellent day out!
Oct 2019
I could not believe it took me over 12 years to visit Rottness Island since I have arrived in Perth, WA. The Rottness express is very convenient, taking the ferry from Fremantle port, plenty of parking. It's a greta idea to buy a ticket with Bike Hire as it's one of the best ways to travel around the island. Will be back again!

Hi patrickperbkk, Thank you for your review. Wow, 12 years! What have you been doing all this time? Rottnest is a right of passage for any Perth resident, and we know, once you've been once, it will become your favourite local getaway. Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon (hopefully not in 12 years!). Kind Regards, Lydia

Day out at ROTTNEST
Mar 2020
Beautiful Island, beautiful beaches and clean water. Lots to see but if doing it by bike don't take on too much unless you're quite fit. Perfect place to relax and spend the day. Quokkas were gorgeous, Ferry ride from Perth and back was very relaxing with great views of the swan river along the way.

Hi 723rolandp, Thank you for your review. Although the cycle around the island is considered a 'right of passage' by locals, its certainly no easy feat! We always recommend to take plenty of water, as refill opportunities are limited once you leave the main settlement. Be sure to go the extra few kilometres and make your way to the West End (Cape Vlamingh) for some beautiful ocean views. Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back on board again soon. Kind Regards, Lydia

Fun Day on Rottnest
Feb 2020
We booked on line with Rottnest Express for the ferry ride from Perth to Rottnest Island with Bikes for two adults. We enjoyed the narrated tour over to the island and was impressed with the streamlined operations for bike/safety helmet issue once we disembarked from the ferry. Rottnest roads and maps were great. We easily navigated to explore most of the island. There was food and snacks available in the town center. The bathrooms along the roads were a disappointment from the odor. All in all, we would recommend this ferry tour/bike combination to our friends.

Hi steveandpatty3, Thank you for your review. It's great to hear that you enjoyed your day on the island, and found the boarding and bike collection process easy and seamless. We do our best to ensure efficient distribution of the bikes on the jetty, to avoid any delays and congestion of passengers. As helmets are required by law in Western Australia, all bike hires will come with a helmet. We do recommend wearing these helmets, as failure to do so can attract a fine from the Island Police, and compromise your safety on the roads. Quokkas are a bit like Kangaroos....they can jump out on the path without a moments notice, so protect your noggin! Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the island soon for another memorable adventure. Kind Regards, Lydia

The Rotto Life
Apr 2019 • Friends
Rottnest never Disappoints, this time we traveled by private boat, got a mourning in Thompson’s Bay, not too expensive. Walked into the townsite and checked out the museum, something we hadn’t done before. Went and had lunch on the verandas seafood restaurant which was delightful overlooking the ocean. Purchased tickets for the bus tour, another first, loved it covered so much ground from lighthouse lookouts to the seal colonies.

Previous trips we hired bikes and cycled the island, always stopping at the basin for a swim. So many coves & beaches to explore, one of my favourite places to visit in Perth, a must for tourists including the quokka selfie.

Although we didn’t frequent the bakery this time (still full from lunch) this is another must, usually lots of quokkas hanging around there and general store.

Until our next visit ❤️ You Rotto

Hi Lozziewestaussie, Thank you for your review. Rottnest Island is a popular holiday spot for locals. We are definitely very proud of our own island paradise, so close and accessible, either by private boat or ferry service. Thank you for visiting the island, and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Kind Regards, Lydia
