About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Mairi S0 contributionsHistory of Fitzroy brought to life! This tour was super interesting! Michael was very knowledgable and has the tour down to a fine art. The booklet with photos of the people he was talking about really added to the experience. Highly recommended.Written December 11, 2024
- 438stefano0 contributionsA must do for visitors and Melbournians alike!A socio-cultural-deep-dive into the origins of the Chinese community and criminal underworld of Chinatown in the heart of Melbourne’s cbd. Michael takes you on a captivating journey of the mind as you step back in time walking Little Bourke Street and its many laneways and back-alleys, while viewing its many original original buildings (and finding out what happened inside), as you listen to the true (and sometimes tall) tales of iconic Chinese criminal figures and warring factions, corrupt and drunken constabulary, and the generally seedy underbelly of the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Michael’s remarkably well-researched historical knowledge, the intriguing, sometimes dark and often hilarious stories, and all the other juicy details of Chinatown’s past are laid bare. A must do for visitors and Melbournians alike!Written December 5, 2024
- 201susanw0 contributionsA very interesting tour.A really interesting, leisurely tour by the very knowledgeable tour leader! Michael has so much knowledge about the ‘sordid’ history of Fitzroy (and surrounds). Highly recommend this tour.Written October 10, 2024
- Themummabear690 contributionsKnowledgeableMichael had incredible knowledge & great stories to tell. It is difficult to think of Fitzroy as he describes it, but he brings the characters and hardship of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s to life. Won’t look at these old buildings in the same way again!!Written October 1, 2024

- nooranahm0 contributionsVivid look back in timeMichael brought to life stories from the early 1900s with such depth of knowledge, I could really picture the events. The stories were fascinating and I’ve learnt so much about that period of Melbourne’s history in 2 hours. Our tour was with a small group of about 7 in total. My partner and I will definitely go on the other tours in the CBD next time we’re in Melbourne!Written July 21, 2024
- sarahjane21780 contributionsYou have to do this!We throughly enjoyed our tour with Michael through Fitroys’ colourful past. I feel like the tour could go all day and talk about every building in the area, as Michael is clearly truely de dictated and knowledgeable about his craft. We will definitely be back to do the other tours!! Thanks again :Written July 21, 2024
- 444jenniferm0 contributionsFascinating Insight into HistoryThis is a sensational tour! Had been on our list for years and we finally did it, and so glad we did. Michael is a great tour guide - a wealth of knowledge and funny and interesting stories, along with the history of a very shady time in Fitzroy. We would highly recommend.Written June 23, 2024
- Knowstravelstuff0 contributionsFun and enjoyable tour of Melbourne’s grimy criminal pastWe had a really enjoyable 2 hours walking with Michael around Melbourne’s Fitzroy area. Michael knows his stuff, hardly surprising given that he’s studied so many of the files of Melbourne’s worst criminals of 100 years ago and written much of his material from its Old Gaol! Prepare yourselves for a very fun and informative historical tour of Melbourne’s crime-ridden underbelly. Thoroughly recommended.Written March 31, 2024
- Jane M0 contributionsDon't miss thisWe went on the Gangsters, Brothels and Lolly Shops Walking tour. You won't take a history walking tour of Melbourne as interesting as this one (unless you also take Michael's Fitzroy True Crime Walking tour on Sundays, which is equally great). Michael's inexhaustible knowledge of Melbourne's criminal past brings historical characters to life. It is so entertaining that two hours flew by. This tour explores a couple of blocks of the city around Little Lonsdale street, so not a lot of walking. But lots of history! I thoroughly recommend this Melbourne Historical Crime Tour.Written March 20, 2024
- emmajordan20240 contributionsExcellent tour!Micheal’s Knowledge and passion for the true crime in Fitzroy in the late 1800 early 1900 is captivating! Highly recommend.Written March 5, 2024
- Kylie M0 contributionsA Walking Tour of Melbourne's historical underbelly? Yes, please! My friend and I attended a Saturday morning tour with Michael and was astounded at his knowledge and enthusiasm of the historical content of Melbourne's seedy side from the late 1900s until the 1940s. The sites visited were very interesting. If you are concerned about walking too far, don't be as you spend a good amount of time at each stop on the tour. We bought a t-shirt each too. Well worth the money and time. He also has other tours, so next time we come to Melbourne, we are definitely going to do the night tour. Thanks Michael, the tour was fab!Written February 15, 2024
- luxfordfamily0 contributionsMelbourne True Crime TourWhat a fascinating tour this was, and Michael was very informative. I dont think anyone knows more, because he has written books about the subject. We were given a booklet about the characters we learnt about. Congrats on building such a strongly supported narrative of the underworld lifestyle in the early 1900s. The tour was well organised, I loved that there were photo booklets for group members to refer to and quotes read from primary documents that gave a taste of the language and characters of the time. Highly recommend this to those who have an inkling of history buff in them.

Was absolutely blown away by this tour, so much history and so much to learn. Even though I’m from Melbourne I learnt so much I never knew and Michael was able to paint such a clear picture of by gone times. Michael is so enthusiastic when telling the stories of Marvelous Melbourne that you can’t help but be exited too.
Thank you for a fantastic afternoon.

Fantastic tour. Michael was excellent in his story telling and knowledge of the Little Lon area of Melbourne pre and post 1900. Loved the tour, and now want to do the Fitzroy tour sometime. Also the tour was perfectly timed at 2 hours, which gave us time to grab a meal before seeing Come From Away at the Comedy Theatre, which was just around the corner from where the tour finished. Perfect. 👍

Firstly it was wonderful to be back in the city again.. it was filled with people just enjoying our marvellous Melbourne. I so enjoyed this walk and have spent today with the excellent booklet researching some of the fascinating things Michael , our tour guide, shared with us. The walk was filled with insights and revelations and I would heartily recommend this to anyone. Who knew about the little "gin distillery" in the middle of a huge high rise complex? Who knew about the sly grog shops the lolly shops and we had a chance to meet some of the shady characters and ordinary people from that time. Thanks Michael. Great tour. You brought history to life.

I recently spent a very enjoyable 2 hours learning about the history of the Little Lon area and its inhabitants of the last century and a bit. Michael was an excellent tour guide and knows the history of the area like the back of his hand. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more of the local history of the infamous red light district.

The tour guide, Michael, is very knowledgeable about the historical nature of the area. He gives a nonstop commentary which is interesting and tells us about not only the significance of the area and its old buildings, but also the characters who lived there. The tour is over a two hour period and covers a fairly small area of a few city blocks so it is not hard for people who may have trouble walking. ( I had a toe to knee cast and found the walking very easy as there are a few stops along the way).

We did the tour on Saturday 10th Dec 2022.
It was fantastic, Michael Shelford is very knowledgeable on the topic and is someone you could spend hours chatting to.
The points of interest he highlights along the way, were amazing, being locals exploring our own city, it's amazing what you walk past without knowing the history of an area, Michael helped put that to bed forever.
I recommend this any Melbournite or O/S tourist.

We had an incredible time on this walking tour with Michael. Meeting at the corner of Copper Inn, our small group of four was perfect for an intimate exploration of Melbourne's colorful past. Michael's storytelling brought to life the intriguing history of the Red Light District in the earlier days of Melbourne. His knowledge and passion for the city's history made the tour both informative and engaging.
I highly recommend this tour to other visitors in Melbourne who are looking to uncover the city's lesser-known, yet fascinating, stories. Don't miss out on this unique experience!

A highly entertaining (and informative) guided tour of a small area of Melbourne city. The walk was easy and there were plenty of stops to look at a variety of buildings. Michael was an excellent tour guide with a relaxed manner. Nothing about the tour was rushed (or dull) and Michael was obviously knowledgeable with a real love of the material which came through in the mix of colourful characters he told us about.
