Day trip from Melbourne
From $129.51
Australia’s Dandenong Ranges offer stunning landscapes and ample wildlife-watching opportunities right in Melbourne’s backyard. This tour combines two of the region’s most popular attractions—a scenic ride on the historic Puffing Billy steam train and a visit to the Healesville Sanctuary to see kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, and other native wildlife.
What to Expect

Your tour begins with an early-morning pickup from your central Melbourne hotel. Traveling aboard an air-conditioned bus, set out on the 1-hour journey into the Dandenong Ranges and soak up the scenery as you climb through lovely mountain valleys.

Along the way, make a stop at the Grants Reserve Café, where you are served morning tea (own expense), including traditional Aussie specialties such as billy tea, lamington cakes, and Vegemite. Before hopping back on the bus, take a moment to admire the views, and to look for cockatoos and rosellas in the surrounding forest.

Continue to Belgrave, the starting point for the Puffing Billy—Australia’s oldest steam train and one of the world’s finest preserved steam railways. Once onboard, set out on a thrilling 30-minute train ride, following the historic railway route through the heart of the Sherbrooke Forest and enjoying spectacular views across the lush mountain valleys.

After your memorable train ride, head to the Healesville Sanctuary, where you can purchase lunch (not included) before exploring the nature reserve. During your visit, see kangaroos, koalas, and wallabies, and spot some of Australia’s more elusive creatures, such as echidnas, platypuses, and Tasmanian devils.

Finally, set out on the return journey to Melbourne, where your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Families will enjoy this the most (it does get crowded if there are school children excursions etc). After a point how many selfies can you take in an old rail carriage or in front of the engine! Overall, this is a average fun experience and...More

Good for young and old

Travelling on Puffing BIllly from Belgrave to Emerald and back is my preferred trip when we have visitors from interstate. For the "old" it relives memories of a bygone era and for the "young" it is the mystery of travelling by a mode of transport...More

Wished for better landscape

I can appreciate the Puffing Billy staff who are very committed and love their job. Their gestures made us feel as if you've arrived in the old days. However was disappointed with the train journey as we only noticed squatters or people's home which were...More

Experience the old world charm of a steam train!

What a brilliant way to explore the area! The train ride is a joy for children and adults alike. It's wonderful to see these old treasures being taken care of for new generations to enjoy.
