Overview

Enjoy a fun and refreshing half-day canyoning tour at the Dove River in Lost World Canyon, a beautiful part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Float and walk through a breathtaking section of river on a moderately challenging canyoning adventure led by experienced guides. See gorges that are surrounded by native button grass, ancient King Billy pines, the slopes of Cradle Mountain, and hear about local history and wildlife from your guide. Your tour includes the use of all necessary equipment, including wetsuits and helmets.

What to Expect

Make your own way to the meeting point near the Cradle Mountain Visitors Centre for your morning or afternoon tour.

Your guide provides the necessary gear for your canyoning excursion, then takes you by minivan to Snake Hill, located about a 15-minute drive away. From the parking area, take an easy 20-minute walk to the river, with views of Cradle Mountain along the way.

Your guide provides a detailed safety talk before you step into the Dove River, which runs through Lost World Canyon. Follow your guide into the water to begin your journey downstream, alternately floating, walking and scrambling over rocks. Expect to spend approximately one hour in the water.

If you're feeling bold, you can take on challenges such as jumping from tall boulders into deep pools, and swimming down rapids and shoots. If adrenaline-fueled thrills don't appeal, simply enjoy the fun of making your way downriver in this gorgeous canyon. You might even spot a wombat along with other critters that are native to Tasmania.

Throughout your tour, your guide shares fascinating facts about the region's wildlife, history and legendary characters such as James ‘Philosopher’ Smith – the first canyoner at Cradle Mountain.

This tour is suitable for people with a good fitness level and sense of adventure. Families and children ages eight and older are welcome to join.

When it's time to leave the river, change back into dry clothes and retrace your steps to the vehicle. Your tour ends with return to the Cradle Mountain Visitors Centre.

Very child friendly

Staff were amazing. So good at assisting children around the canyon and up the walls to enable an exhilarating experience for youngsters. It was great to be able to sit back and enjoy the adrenaline fuelled excitement on my daughters face........... location pretty impressive too!
