About the operator
- mattrI2689QU00A fabulous experienceJames from FNQ Nature Tours guided me for three days in the Atherton Table Lands to find specific birds. It was a superb and spectacular experience. The guiding was enthusiastic, experienced, well planned, imaginative and very friendly. The accommodation and meals organised for me were excellent. James is not only a first-class ornithologist who knows many locations to find rare birds, but was prepared to be flexible to make changes in the itinerary as necessary. He was always thinking of how to help me and to give me a good experience. The wet tropics of northern Queensland are a fantastic ecological treasure and I could not have had a better guide to them.
- Mithril7400Wonderful wildlife viewing near CairnsWe spent a few days in Cairns on a recent Australia wildlife trip and had a day with James, from FNQ Nature Tours, exploring the Atherton Tablelands. This was a wonderful day, right from being picked up at the hotel after breakfast until being dropped off there in time for supper. James is incredible - his knowledge of the flora, fauna and history of the area is unparalleled and he was entertaining and informative about everything we saw. We were able to get great views of a tree kangaroo, a platypus, flying foxes, a huge number and species of birds ....there seemed to be a better view around every corner. I would not hesitate to recommend James and his company to anyone looking to do some wildlife viewing in the Cairns area.
- ziziw201300A day to treasure, full of experiences of nature, birds and animals. We cannot thank you enough for this extraordinary dWe had an extraordinary day experiencing everything that the Atherton Tablelands has to offer with James of FNQ Nature Tours. His deep and heartfelt knowledge and enthusiasm for nature, the birds, the animals and the geology of the region is wonderful. It was just absolutely outstanding seeing the endemic birds, animals, Cathedral Fig, the Eacham Lake and the huge fascinating bats. James went out of his way to make our experience unique and wonderful.
- Venture0411317443300Wonderful nature, wildlife conservation safariWe had such a fabulous time and our guide James was incredibly knowledgeable, fun and tolerant of all of our questions! We did the four day nature, wildlife and conservation safari in Daintree and Atherton Tablelands. We were fortunate to meet some fantastic conservationists/rehabbers/scientists doing such important work, in addition to seeing so many wonderful Australian plants and animals including Cassowaries, pademelons, crocodiles, bats, tree kangaroo, gray kangaroo, platypus, possums and so much more! Would highly recommend! These guys know their stuff and are extremely professional and engaging.
- paulhO8926ZT005 day Far North Queensland Birdwatching Tour- recommendedThis was an excellent excursion. James , our guide , was very personable and became a friend. His knowledge of bird song and likely habitat was a major factor in our seeing and enjoying many of the endemic species which we would not otherwise have found . He was able to work around the unseasonable rain to ensure we had an excellent experience. He is also an excellent and safe driver. Accommodation and food was enjoyable, with the dinner at the Mt Molloy Hotel very pleasurable. As well as the birdlife, this tour showed facets of this part of North Queensland which one might miss on one's own. Can be highly recommended. Paul and Glennys
- C5809DNgrahamg00Over and Above Expectations! The August 2023 Aus Geo/Far North Queensland Birding Tour was excellent in all respects. Our Guide James was perfect for the job and went over and above any Guide I have experienced before. It was very difficult for him as it rained most days and at time with torrential downpours. Despite this we still managed to see and photograph most of the target species. Accommodation was very good in both Lodges and the food over the 5 days was exceptional. James's photography skills were great and he was constantly helping and advising on how to get the best shots in the circumstances we found ourselves. I have one piece of constructive feedback. The (unadvertised) 6km walk at Shared Earth Reserve was too long for this group of Baby-boomers. We wasted 4 hours of good birding time here and there were very few birds found. My suggestion is to scrap this walk. I suggest still go here for breakfast as we did but then go back and focus on the entry road which was a very rich habitat for birds on the way in. Do it again on the way out and forget the walk. Overall a terrific Tour and highly recommended to any birding enthusiast interested in NQ birding and habitat experiences.
- ruthpY8002XM00A great wildlife experienceMy husband and I did the four day FNQ wildlife and conservation tour. It exceeded all our expectations. We saw lots of amazing wildlife including crocodiles, cassowaries, platypus, tree kangaroos and more. A highlight was meeting a number of people who do wildlife rescue, conservation or research and hearing about what they are doing. It was a small group tour which meant there was a lot more flexibility than with larger groups and we had a very nice group of people. Our tour guide Matt was amazing, very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and flexible. I think we saw a lot more because of him. We stayed and ate at local businesses which were all excellent. We would happily go back to any of them (in fact we did go back to one cafe at Mossman after the tour on our way to our next stay). We would highly recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in our local wildlife. It's a truly beautiful area with lots to see.
- Pam Q00Unique wildlife & nature experience with the bonus of exceptional local foodOur small group 4 Day Nature Wildlife & Conservation Safari was excellent. The guides knowledge, engagement skills & flexibility were exemplary. To ensure we were not wasting any time, the guides introduced several additional activities. It was lovely to enjoy such a high level of organisation and anticipation of our interests & requirements. We were so lucky to meet local people engaged in supporting the unique wildlife. The meals far exceeded our expectations & were indicative of considerable local knowledge. Be prepared to be tired but exhilarated at the end of these 4 action packed days.
- ellenkD3326TR00Amazing way to explore nature in a small-group setting! We (my husband and I) originally selected FNQ for the small-group aspect of their tours and they exceeded expectations! We booked two separate trips with them - the Daintree Afternoon & Nocturnal tour, as well as a private day of bird watching in the Tablelands. For our first day tour to the Daintree, we were picked up by Aaron and were pleasantly surprised to find it was a lucky private tour! Mind you, we fully anticipated other groups would be with us, but it was amazing to learn FNQ didn't cancel due to it only being the two of us. The weather was more wet than we expected (as it was supposed to be the dry season) and we hadn't brought our raincoats, but Aaron did a great job of keeping it interesting and upbeat. He's newer to FNQ but was super knowledgeable about plants and animals. We also were fortunate to see an adult and juvenile cassowary early into the trip eating cassowary plum (big blue fruit) which was amazing. Our second trip was a private bird watching tour with James and unfortunately he had a family emergency requiring his attention on our original date. He was super professional and quick to offer either a different tour at a discount or a full refund. He also went out of his way to connect with fellow birders to see if someone else had availability. At first, it was looking like it just wasn't in the cards for us, but we had a tiny amount of flexibility in our travel plans and James was available for a later day instead! The bird trip ended up being even better than I could have hoped for! We came in with only a couple 'target' birds but saw both of them and so so many more! James is great at birding and was super helpful for spotting and IDing throughout the day. He was very accommodating to flex based on our interests. Also, we got lucky and randomly saw an echidna as well! Overall, if your interest is getting out into nature to maximize the experience, I highly recommend going with a small group and with guides with passion for wildlife. FNQ Nature Tours checks all these boxes and more!
- rmazor00The trip of a lifetimeI can't recommend FNQ highly enough. What a wonderful experience! Because FNQ did not have a tour scheduled for the dates I was planning to be in North Queensland, I ended up booking a private tour (focusing on Daintree and Atherton Tablelands, but not Mossman Gorge). I am so glad I did. Our guide, Matt, was able to give us an amazing experience, showing us animals I never thought I'd be seeing in the wild (cassowaries! platypus! tree kangaroo! saltwater crocodiles! and that was just our first day!) Matt arranged for us to meet with local wildlife conservation specialists (such as the Tolga Bat Hospital, Tree Roo Rescue, and Wildlife and Raptor Care Queensland), and we were able to learn so much about efforts to conserve north Queensland's amazing wildlife. Because we were a small group, Matt was able to customize the itinerary and adapt on the fly (e.g., he added a bonus night walk for us, which was fantastic). As with any wildlife experience, it's best to approach it with an open mind and patience, because you never know what the day will give you.
- Jean R00A Wonderful Day in Daintree ParkWe spent a full day with James touring the Daintree Forest. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and particularly liked that James was flexible and adjusted the tour based on our interests. We started by taking a boat ride on the Daintree River. It was a small private boat with a very knowledgeable guide/ captain. We saw birds and crocodiles and learned a lot about the area. Next we went to a small cottage in the forest for lunch. The menu emphasized local foods, particularly a great selection of local fruits. They offered kangaroo, which we didn’t sample. 🥴 Finally we went into the park and explored the scenery. James was very knowledgeable about the area’s history and significance. We took a walk on a boardwalk through the forest to the beach. We were always on the lookout for wildlife and were rewarded by catching a glimpse of a cassowary through the trees. We also saw several very large spiders, but let’s not dwell on that. We would highly recommend this tour company and its owner, our guide James.
- SoCalifornian00Spectacular!We had a full-day tour of the Daintree Rainforest with James. It was absolutely amazing! James has a staggering breadth of knowledge and an infectious enthusiasm that kept our whole family fully engaged for the full 10 hour tour. His ease with the various spiders, lizards, snakes, centipedes, birds and bugs we encountered helped us all feel calm and comfortable. This was a real highlight of our two weeks in Australia!
- MrMicr0ph0ne00Daintree Rain Forest AdventureI would highly recommend FNQ Nature tours, and particularly James as a guide. He curated an entire day trip for us (me, my wife and 21-year old son) which included a Daintree river excursion on a solar-powered boat, lunch at a fabulous teahouse, and two hikes in the Daintree rainforest. We saw plenty of tropical birds, fruit bats and baby crocs as well as an orange legged paddymelon! James was an expert on the wet tropics flora and fauna and also provided amazing digital photographs to us with his high powered camera. In all, we had a wonderful excursion!
- A2Traveler3000A great day in the Atherton TanlelandsAn outstanding day in the Atherton Tablelands rainforests and lake region. Matt and Rowen were perfect guides. Their knowledge about the rainforest wildlife and foliage was amazing. Each time a bird called Matt identified it, and he constantly had his binoculars out searching for tree kangaroos, dragon lizards, platypus and a possum unique to the area. We had mixed results, seeing several species but not all…..and clearly it was not for lack of trying. All in all a day well spent.
- 466timothyo00An amazing wildlife experienceThis was truly exceptional trip - one of the best have taken anywhere or anytime. James took us into the Tablelands, where we saw a variety of animals, including tree kangaroos, red-legged pademelons, and a variety of birds and lizards. He identified bird songs, and even helped with visual identification - a challenge with the thick canope. The scenery was wonderful as well, including a beautiful blue-green lake with turtles and a variety of interesting fish. A day very well spent!

James Boettcher…. what a legend! I had the pleasure of spending 4 days with James, in his absolute element, experiencing his infectious enthusiasm and willingness to impart knowledge.
He really opens your eyes and ears to the rainforest. It soon it feels like each and every living thing is a member of an epic orchestra; he makes you realise that each thing is perfectly designed to play their key part in their own unique way, and they all come together to create the beautiful music that is the wet tropics of FNQ.
What James and his team have created at FNQ Nature Tours is incredible! His passion and drive to protect and conserve the wet tropics and champion others to do the same really hits home from the moment you step into his vehicle.
He gave me such an immersive experience of his world. The animal and plant interactions were unreal!! Our experience with a jungle carpet python will forever remain one of the best moments of my life. He gave me 4 days of constant adventure, excitement, fun, education and relaxation. Perfectly balanced and perfectly tailored.
But out of all of our epic experiences, seeing James still get so stoked about an experience and seeing him still surprising himself was one of my highlights. These guys are truly passionate about what they do.
FNQ Nature Tours has allowed me to experience the most intimate feeling of connectedness with nature and on such a profound level. What a rare gift to be able to give people hey!
This experience surpasses all my other travel adventures. I honestly cannot speak highly enough of James, as a guide, a business owner and as a friend. His vision and his mission are strong!
Thanks for the memories mate 🤙🏽

G'day Aaron,
Well, this certainly surpasses any review I have ever read. Thank you kindly for this massive complement mate! The greatest reward was watching you enjoy all aspects of that experience. The excitement on your face when we re-located that python from the busy highway to a safe area nearby... just wild!
I will admit, I had just as much fun leading that tour, spending 4 days with a like-minded nature lover. It was full of amazing stories, great yarns and wildlife moments.
Hope to see you again one day and all the best with your future conservation endeavours!
Stay in touch - JB

In summary, Matt was absolutely fantastic and we would highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Daintree.
Wow, wow, wow - we enjoyed our tour SO much! We were told that Matt would be our guide for our tour and we are so pleased to have had him, he is amazing and great fun! His passion for the rainforest (and all nature) is so clearly communicated and he has left us with a new appreciated for the circle of life. There was never a silent moment, except for when we were close to an amazing animal, because Matt had such interesting knowledge to share.
To enter the rainforest, we first needed to cross the Daintree river which we did via a crocodile cruise (and saw 2). On the other side of the river, Matt began the rainforest tour by asking us if there was anything in particular that we wanted to see and we told him that we'd love to see a cassowary. Upon arrival at the first rainforest walk, we rushed up to the area where the previous tour had spotted a cassowary and found it. It was a teenage one but still had the beautiful markings on its neck that we admired. Matt pointed out lots of plants and taught us about their behaviour and contribution to the rainforest.
We went for dinner at a restaurant which FNQ had not tried before because the usual one had shut for the low season. However, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal (the chips were excellent 😉)!
We had a full moon for our night walk so we didn't see many mammals but we saw plenty of insects. Our highlight was spotting a shiny flycatcher guarding her nest in which three babies were sleeping.

Hello Susie!
What an absolutely wonderful review, thank you for taking the time out of your day to provide this feedback!
It makes my heart swell to read this, we are a small team and we truly do our best to connect our customers to great nature experiences!
Crocodiles are tough to see during Summer so I'm glad you saw a couple!
I also appreciate your understanding regarding the restaurant change. Whet Restaurant will be reopening in April.
Happy travels and thanks again!

Did the afternoon/night tour with a private cruise and it was the perfect start to our Cairns trip. James was highly professional and responsive in the booking process with helped realize the rather last minute-arrangement. The trip started with a river cruise with a bird/reptile expert who helped us spot fascinating wildlife we would've never noticed ourselves. We felt euphoric seeing three enormous Saltwater Crocs up real close. Afterwards, we ventured further up north, making stops in ancient rainforests, spectacular lookouts and upon exotic animal sightings before arriving at Cape Tribulation for dinner. The night walk was a very novel experience, being able to see the Daintree in its most natural state. Overall the tour was incredibly seamless and well organized. James was a knowledgeable and charismatic guide who provided interesting commentary at every stage of the tour. The timing of the trip was genius, heading up north when most day-trippers are returning to Cairns. We ended up having most of the attractions all to ourselves and seeing the long queues on the other side of the road was incredibly satisfying. Taking the private cruise option is highly recommended as it gives you the chance to view the crocodiles for longer. Also, the night walk is better during a new moon. Not a cheap day out but worth every cent.

Wow we had an amazing trip with James. He is an extremely knowledgeable and upbeat tour guide and made our entire experience a time we will never forget. From seeing two crocodiles, many birds, plants and even mammals, he could answer all questions we had. Not to mention the dinner was INCREDIBLE. We would 10000% recommend this tour and James to anyone in the tropical North Queensland area!

Everything about this tour was spot on. Kelvin picked us up at our accommodation on time, personalized every aspect of this experience and showed an incredible level of knowledge and respect. We were fortunate to witness scarface the enormous croc and 2 large, healthy mature cassowaries on our trip!
The solar boat tour along the river was fantastic. No real fumes or noise and a small group that really enjoyed sharing the spotting experience. Walking on the boardwalk at night was also a great experience. It is worth every penny we spent. Even the dinner was good. If every tourism operator in the area delivered this kind of quality FNQ would excel.
Thanks to the Queensland government's holiday dollars we were able to participate in an extraordinary experience.

We had an absolutely brilliant day with tour guide Matt. Due to some Covid cancellations, we were the only ones on the tour and we had what ended up being a wonderful private tour.
The car was very comfortable and Matt was the consummate host. He was very knowledgeable but also very easy to listen to and despite being a 10 hour trip, maintained his energy and easily kept our attention.
We were lucky enough to spot lots of animals throughout the day including numerous birds, more than 10 crocs on our solar boat trip on the Daintree River and 3 carpet pythons!
After spotting an eagle’s nest at Cape Tribulation at sunset, we had a delicious dinner at a nearby restaurant amongst the rainforest and then finished up with a couple of night walks through the rainforest.
Our main reason for choosing this trip was that it left later in the day, allowing us to visit the river and rainforest after all the other day trippers. The rainforest boardwalks were quiet in the afternoon and we had them to ourselves at night to hear all the different sounds of the rainforest at night, as well as spot a few extra animals that come out at night!
A wonderful trip, very highly recommended.
Thank you Matt for an unforgettable day!

Hi Jeremy,
Thank you so much for this captivating review! I remember Matt telling me of this day, the day with all the wildlife and 3 snakes. I believe Matt took his scope out for some up close viewing!
We are absolutely wrapped that you both had such a lovely time and that we were able to run this trip with just the two of you!
I noticed you left a review on Solar Whisper also, thank you so much for supporting our friends on the boat cruise, they are the GREENest operator on the Daintree River.
Next time you visit us in FNQ, come and checkout the Atherton Tablelands! Take care and stay safe out there

James enthusiasm, friendliness and passion for Nature is obvious in his manner and the information he imparts. Our tour was a joy from beginning to end and we are still recommending it to all who ask. We were able to take our time and enjoy all aspects of the tour. The night walk was particularly interesting as we probably would not have otherwise done this - we now know how to hold our torches and what the ants taste like. Thank you for a fantastic time.

I loved this tour, Kelvin was an exceptional guide with a lot of knowledge about the area. I loved the small group and personalised experience, and we got to see a lot of different wildlife, including week old baby crocodiles, turtles, kingfishers, snakes and frogs. I learnt a lot about the area and its history and enjoyed the peacefulness of the Daintree in the afternoon and evening when there were not many others around. The all around service is great, including being picked up from very close to home, and not to mention I still got my Saturday morning sleep in. James has been very easy to communicate with in regards to arranging a date for me to go on this tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to locals and visitors to FNQ as I think it is a unique and valuable experience that I won't forget.

We cannot recommend this tour enough! Matt was the perfect guide with extensive knowledge about the rainforest and its wildlife. He even personalized the tour after finding out my partner and I are big wildlife lovers to give us the best chance of seeing and filming the elusive animals in the Daintree area.
We saw many different animals on our walks in the rainforest and the night tour was a magical experience like no other. Just to name a few, we saw stripped possums, the Papuan frogmouth owl, many species of frogs, and even a spotted python on our way back home. I also managed to film a Boyd's forest dragon catching a cicada mid-air up close! The Solar Whisper crocodile cruise through the daintree river was also amazing and we saw many baby saltwater crocodiles and spectacled fruit bats. On top of all that, the dinner included in the tour was also absolutely delicious and the views at Cape Tribulation were wonderful.
Truly one of the best ways out there to explore the Daintree rainforest and we are already planning our next trip back out here!
Thank you so much Matt for making this trip amazing and teaching us so much!
