As is wont to happen during the monsoon season, rain descended on Cairns on the third morning of my stay in the city. After a hearty breakfast overlooking the water on the Esplanade, I headed over to the Cairns Aquarium for an activity out of the weather. Many others also had the same idea, and the line for entry spilled out onto the street. Nevertheless I reached the ticket window within around 10 minutes and was soon able to enjoy the exhibits.

The Cairns Aquarium is an excellent facility, especially admirable for being a regional attraction. Taking guests through freshwater river and lake systems through to the reef, The interpretation is accessible (despite the odd spelling mistake), with interesting explanations for most species. There was also a good variety of guide presentations available on the day. Shout out to Cameron in particular for his entertaining and listenable style. Well worth visiting.

A must do if you are in or around Cairns. This stunning aquarium offers so much, so please plan ahead to get the most out of your visit. As well as general admission, there are many other combination offers, including lunch at the adjoining and wonderful Dundees restaurant, other FNQ experiences such as Hartleys crocodile farm (another great experience!) diving with sharks, and entry and information given in the turtle rehab hospital. There are also twilight combos. Check the website for all the details including the times guides provide talks and information on some of the amazing displays. Would highly recommend seeing all if possible. Entry allows you to exit and reenter on a given day, but again, check the times. Having a love of turtles we purchased admission to the turtle hospital which we found incredibly interesting. The work of the dedicated volunteers who give their time to assist with the rehab and educate us about the turtles, their behaviours and the the terrible threat of sea pollutants..was an eye opener. We also saw a green turtle who will be returned to the open sea soon. We loved it so much, we will go again next time we are in FNQ.

The aquarium was well located and easy to navigate. The staff were friendly, helpful and well informed. There was a great range of aquatic animals from sharks to starfish as well as various reptiles and insects. The design of the tanks etc made it easy to see the animals.i thought the price of entry was reasonable, we had a great time and I would recommend the aquarium to anyone visiting the area.

For the family admission price of $140, I do not recommend the Cairns aquarium. We came from Melbourne, missed out in snorkelling due to rough conditions, and this was our plan B so the kids could see some marine life they might have experienced on the reef. This aquarium was lame and overpriced. Compared to the Melbourne aquarium, it was disappointing. Do not waste your money.

Hi Michelle, We’re surprised to hear about your experience at the Cairns Aquarium; given majority of visitors enjoy their journey. Here at the Cairns Aquarium we have over 16000 animals that are native to this region in Far North QLD Australia. We are home to the largest freshwater billabong tank in Australia, the tallest deep reef tank in the Southern Hemisphere and home to a 1.6 million litre oceanarium. We also house over 72 exhibits across 11 ecosystems. And have 2 beautiful immersive tunnel experiences throughout the aquarium. We usually recommend at least 1.5 to 2 hours to go through the aquarium, and stopping off at our daily presentations throughout the day to learn more and catch feedings too😁 We believe our facility is an incredible place to visit to learn all about our native wildlife and ecosystems here in Cairns. Definitely a stop off point to learn, before heading into the wild. We provide an educational and immersive experience for all guests; providing much needed awareness for how important our wildlife and these parts of the world are and how we can all work together to conserve them. 🐠⭐️ Our ticket price reflects the amazing close wildlife encounters and educational experience here at the aquarium; and is in line with other zoo and aquarium experiences through Australia. Your ticket price also helps us care for our wildlife and their habitats so thank you for visiting! 😊🐠

We visited here on a Saturday morning. The aquarium is very well set out and the creatures were easy to see and the information was well set out. We attended three talks, which were excellent and very informative. I would suggest visiting in the morning because most of the talks take place then.
My only criticism relates to the actual admission. We booked online and the queue was out the door and along the path! However, those who didn’t book online went straight in! We waited for about 20 minutes, which I wouldn’t mind except that the online booking line had only one cashier and the walk-ins had two. I think someone needs to be checking and be ready to react to the situation.

Hi, thank you so much for this lovely review! We’re incredibly happy to hear that you enjoyed the aquarium experience and will pass on your amazing feedback to our wildlife education team! 😄🐠🦈 Unfortunately pre purchased tickets that are booked online do not guarantee a faster admission as they aren’t a skip the queue option 🎟 and so they have to be redeemed at the front desk to ensure that the tickets purchased are correct for each group and to redeem the tickets from third party booking agencies. We do apologise for the wait time; as the cairns aquarium is one of the most popular destinations in Cairns, the mornings especially on weekends can be quite busy, and we do have some staff still training on our front desk, learning the ropes, so we appreciate your patience on the day. 😊 We did have 4 tils open for service on this day, and 2 staff taking pre booked tickets. However we will take your feedback on board and appreciate you taking the time to provide this feedback. Thank you for visiting! 😄🐠🦈🦎

Was able to see species of fish we haven't seen before so that was a positive. The place was clean and each exhibit was well signed. For us the down side was lining up for over 30 minutes to get in. In my opinion the counter staff should not be accountable for handing out maps and answering questions. The counter staff should get people thru as quick as possible. There should be ushers to answer questions and offer people directions. This would no doubt stop people having to line 50-60 deep out the door. The second negative for us was the price. Unfortunately could not justify to anyone paying $88 for 2 adults for approx 1 to 1 an a quarter hours. Sorry, but seriously overpriced for what you get compared to other activities in the area. Can say we did it thou.

Hi thank you for your feedback 😊 As a privately owned tourism entity, as you are aware we were all impacted in Far North Queensland due to the closure of the Australian and interstate borders over the last year. This has ultimately impacted the level of staff that we have available. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience however, our entire team have been working very hard to ensure that the admissions process is as efficient as possible. We are required as part of our COVID-19 compliance plan to ask questions, check contact tracing check in’s and elaborate on the cairns aquarium map at the admissions desk before guests enter the aquarium itself. Most days this is a relatively quick process, however, on rainy days we may have higher numbers of visitors so the check in process may vary on those days. The admissions price reflects the educational and immersive experience we offer with over 16 000 native animals on site from ecosystems across North Queensland Australia. Throughout the day our wildlife educators also deliver presentations every hour, and we offer additional tours on site such as the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation tour. Again thank you for your feedback 😊 and we are really happy that you enjoyed your visit at the Cairns Aquarium.

We visited multiple aquariums on our trip from Cairns to Brisbane and this was easily the best one. There were a range of setups to look at and a variety of fish to spot. The gift shop had so many options, from snowglobes to wall art with options to post the art home if you were travelling through. I would highly recommend this attraction if you are looking for something to do in Cairns- just be warned that time moves slow in there and you can easily spend 2 hours walking around.

I loved it all, but especially the reef section as I was snorkelling on Moore Reef on the previous day . The talk about sharks etc was extremely interesting and informative, and I was delighted that the lovely young man assured me that the fish can see us too!
We returned the following day to do the tour of the turtle hospital, and that was wonderful too. The young lady was so passionate about her turtles, very knowledgeable ,and answered all of our questions.
It is so great to meet young people who are so committed to the welfare and protection of our unique wildlife. Highly recommend the whole experience.

We had about 4 hours at the Aquarium and could have stayed longer. We attended three of the talks which were presented in a humorous yet educational way which helped the information and message to stick. The shark guy was great. The tanks and fish were presented beautifully and showed the progression of water from source to sea and the different environments it covers. We returned that evening to enjoy dinner at Dundees restaurant at the Aquarium which has an enormous tank as the feature wall - truly spectacular.

While we pretended to be taking photos and videos for the grandkids, we were actually totally enthralled ourselves.
What a fantastic couple of hours strolling through lively and interesting displays.
We managed to catch a demonstration in the Rays and Sharks exhibit, which was wonderful, if a bit preachy (I love to eat Flake).
I am handicapped and find walking extremely difficult. While there were seats in the large display area, they were often taken, and little other seating was available.
I will have to remember to take my wheelchair next time - this is worth another visit!
