About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- DavidInAustinTx0 contributionsBeautiful day in the reefGreat day fishing! We had booked a private charter- and really wanted to get on the reef. Raewyn called a few days prior and offered to switch days so we could benefit from calmer seas. Had a great day on the water with captain Daryl. He’s been guiding trips for 25 years - and is extremely knowledgeable about all the best spots and techniques. Kids had a blast! Everyone caught some fish - and we brought home several tasty fish.Written June 16, 2024
- chrisbR8359ZM0 contributionsChris ButteryGreat fishing, biggest fish I’ve ever caught very helpful had a ball, can’t wait to go back next time I would love to try the estuary fishingWritten January 11, 2020
- Michael P0 contributionsCairns fishing awesomeBooked a 3 day sole guided reef charter this week with Captain Darryl, with my mate Chris both from Adelaide.the SA government and officials have imposed a 3 year ban on snapper fishing. Well we decided to fish Cairns. I have fished with Fish Tails in November for the last 5 years but not sole charters.group charters are good but the sole charter was gr8 well worth the extra money.one on two advice, more room to case down fish. We caught lots of big fish that pulled hard.no King George whiting here..... I caught my first Coral Trout on this trip. It's just getting better each year. Get your mates/family together have a holiday and do some fishing. We are lucky enough to be bringing fish home for our families.a lot of fish where released and we only kept what we could eat. So next year I catch the ones I relased. Well that's the theory. Great tuition on board for Chris new to this type of fishing and I still learnt more. Can't speak more highly of Fish Tail chaters. From making the booking to landing the big one. 10/10. See u guys November 2020. Thanks Michael. Adelaide SA....Written November 20, 2019

Had an awesome day out on the Russell River with Daryl and 2 others. It was fairly quiet in the morning due the a previous few weeks of heavy rain but Daryl went over and above to put us onto the fish, what a great guy. In the afternoon we bagged a few travali, the highlight of my day was seeing a massive GT strike on my fellow passengers catch and head out to open water. I will never forget that one. An incredible day, thank you Daryl 😊🎣

Worst ever experience.
1.5hrs looking for bait before being able to fish.
Not allowed to hold the Fishing Rods and when the fish bite you are told we are not there to catch small fish, the rods are left in their rod sleeves. No baiting the hook or casting the lines in to fish.
The other persons son was bored out of his brains, when holding a fishing rod would have made his day.
Inappropriate conversations to the young 7year old about climbing/swinging off a boat pole to him that if only the women would dance on the pole instead, pole dancing.
Told that my banana gumboots were unlucky for fishing yet we caught the most fish and instead of fishing like we paid to do the operator wants to know personal questions about us all our jobs, our lives etc and talk too much rather then make efforts to help catch fish…
Operator should disclose that you can’t hold your own rod, bait or cast it in and can touch only when he says you can…so disappointing
Out there sitting, little fishing happening at all..
Waste of money could have brought 200 plus dollars for fish from fresh fish shop instead of paying to sit and watch a rod we were not allowed to touch.

Thank you for your review!
The fishing guide reported from the time you boarded you where OFFENDED and UPSET with him!
Maybe next time you could do a little more research and find a more suitable fishing charter, that takes in your needs/wants/fish target species, etc.
We are more than happy to chat to anyone before they make a booking, when in fact we did and our advise was ignored.
Kind Regards Raewyn and Darryl

Dazza was awesome to hang with for the day, he was very informative about anything and everything fishing and was just an all round great bloke. Spoilt for choice for fishing spots and Dazza was very accommodating and patient with us while he was teaching us tips and tricks along the way. Dazza was also super flexible when it come to changing our booking to suit COVID restrictions that popped up unexpectedly. Super chill day, great laughs and better fishing!! Highly recommend Fish Tales Charters Cairns, absolute ripper of a day!

Had an absolute ball out with Daryl! We were told the fishing wasn’t great due to recent rain (over 100mm last month!) but we love being out on the water so went anyway. Enjoyed poking around creeks (Daryl did well hiding us from the wind) loved the banter and conversation, got a few decent bites as well. Would recommend it as a great half day out.

The worst charter we have ever been on. The skipper made no effort whatsoever in trying to find us a fish to catch. We literally went 5 minutes from the marina dropped anchor and sat there for 6 hours not catching anything. They was 8 people on his tiny little boat so you couldn’t all fish anyway. It was very disappointing and would never recommend this guy to anyone.

Hi There,
Thank you for your review.
Unfortunately, I am sorry you had a bad experience; as I tell every customer upon boarding in the last 2 months, the fishing has been extremely difficult due to adverse weather conditions.
Just for record, on our half day estuary fishing charter we do not take 8 people and they are a minimum of 4.5 hours. The photo you attached with the review is a fishing spot approximately 20 minutes travelling time from the marina. Kind regards Darryl and Raewyn Your Hosts Fish Tales Charters

Even with just me booking on the trip, Darryl still took me out and didn’t cancel which was just the tip of a great morning.
From catching fish to great chats. I had such a good morning!
Thank you so much for the morning fish and for great advice on other things to do in the area!

Our fourth or fifth time out with Daz!
My son Leo and I have the best time onboard with the big fella, always get fish and a great chat. My boy says it’s his favourite thing to in cairns, I’d have to agree.
See you in December when we come up for Leos birthday!

We paid top dollar to get a private charter, the skipper wasn't happy about taking us, frequently saying, too old for this. Tide was wrong, we weren't fro the area so were unaware of this. When we asked if fish were good eating, we were told that's not important. We are keen fishers and like to eat the catch.only positive was looking up the creeks and mangroves and the sea eagle. Would not recommend to friends or family.we will charter our own boat next time.

Due to poor weather I ended up fishing the Mulgrave River twice while in Cairns. On the first day I caught numerous fish trevally, mangrove jack, fingermark, cod and a tarpon. On the second day with Daryl and Fish Tale Charters a group of 6 caught 6 fish between all of us.Fishing can be like this but Daryl had trouble catching enough live bait and took a few hours in all to do so,On the previous day Kerry took about 15 minutes.Daryl fished only a few locations near the mouth of the river, whereas on the previous trip we fished many locations up and down the river to find fish.Whilst being a very pleasant and chatty guide my overall feeling was that Daryl didn't try enough locations and failed to deliver what was expected from an experienced charter operator.

Our skipper Timmy was not a nice person, he didn't want to be there from the start. He was not helpful at all throughout the day. He took any potential fun out of the day, Timmy did everything himself we weren't allowed to touch the rods. He put the bait on, cast them out himself and yelled at us if we did touch the rods when the fish were biting. He even blamed us when the anchor he threw out wouldn't take hold properly. Overall a waste of money and a morning, and to top it off we didn't catch anything!
