About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 181christianeh0 contributionsUnbelievable! You learn sooooo much! This tour was just beyond anything I had expected. Paul is enormously knowledgable. You can ask him anything and he will know the answer. Top tip from me (but ask permission first): record all the things he is teaching you - it is jaw-dropping. We saw three platypus, a white-tailed rat (endemic to Oz/ Qld), several possums, bower birds, fluorescent fungi, flying foxes, brolgas, a small dragon (Boyd's dragon; a juvenile), wallabies, alas no tree kangaroo. I have already decided to do the very same tour again when I return to Cairns in 2026. Can't wait! Thanks a lot, Paul! You run a tight ship and you don't suffer fools gladly, but this has been a blast!!!Written September 10, 2024
- susancatten0 contributionsHighlight of Cairns Trip.. Don't miss!Forget the Great Barrier Reef. That pales into insignificance when compared to this trip Paul, The tour guide is a font of knowledge and explains the historic significance of the rainforest on the route to your first stop yes there are 233 twists and turns on the road but expertly handled by Paul. Paul was very keen to ensure that we saw as much wildlife as, possible but of course nothing is guaranteed We did see several platypus. the amazing flying foxes both stationary and in flight. Ring tailed possum. wallabies. Pademelons, brush tailed turkeys. The rainforest itself is a unique experience viewing ancient trees. With both daytime and night time strolls this is the best opportunity to see nocturnal animals If you can only afford one trip this is the one for you. Don't miss itWritten August 22, 2024
- jjjawaii0 contributionsGreat Tour!We spent an afternoon and evening with Paul and had a wonderful time. We saw three platypus, wallabies, fruit bats, and pade melon during the day. The pade melon were close by until they take off like rockets through the forest. In the evening we saw three types of possum in the trees. We also had incredible clear skies with stars and one shooting star. Paul is very knowledgeable of the local history and wildlife.Written June 13, 2024
- davsmy0 contributionsA Tour not to be missed. This tour is a must do if you have an interest in an authentic wildlife tour in North Queensland. Paul is a highly engaging and knowledgeable guide with an uncanny ability to spot critters in light and dark. Amongst others we managed to see the more elusive tree kangaroo with the piece de resistance being a 20 plus minute display by a platypus who incredibly climbed onto a rock to scratch and preen itself in full view. We booked this trip after a cancellation of our Daintree forest tour and are now delighted for that good fortune. (David, Amanda and Amy..tour on 2 January 2024)Written January 10, 2024
- Tal M0 contributionsMust do if you want to see loads of animals in their natural habitatThat was AWESOME! First of all, the main goal of Paul the guide was finding animals. This trip's purpose is not to walk or to hike. Paul is very experienced, I felt secure and had confidence in him to find animals. All you need to do is listen to him. He knows everything there is to know about the wildlife animals, the vegetation and flora, the towns and man made (or destroyed) areas and even the stars above us. Do not expect to take good photos with your phone. Instead, I recommend you keep your eyes on nature (binoculars are provided). This easily tops any trip I've been on. What we saw: wallabies, rat kangaroo, tree kangaroo, pademelon, flying foxes, giant white tail rat, red possum (can't remember the name), green ringtail possum (very rare), several platypuses, water dragon, turtles, micro bats, fireflies, and a spider that I prefer to forget 🤭 The drive up the mountain is windy, about 300 turns in 30 minutes, some people may prefer to take a pill (take it right before the drive starts). There's a stop in the middle for a lookout.Written September 20, 2023
- Voyager528060236690 contributionsMore than expected - highly recommendedGreat trip, our guide was very knowledgable, highly enthusiastic and most importantly clearly cared a lot about the rainforest.Written July 29, 2023
- Houndog1810 contributionsAwesomeDid this trip last night. Spotted a platypus and tree kangaroo and much more. Pub dinner was excellent. Paul was very knowledgeable about the area, the wildlife and vegetation. Bring your walking shoes. Highly recommended.Written September 27, 2022
- Jalee150 contributionsHoliday highlightJust did a fantastic nature tour with Paul from Waitawhile. He pointed out so much wildlife that we would never have seen on our own. It was truly special. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy the riches of this rainforest with a very informative guide.Written September 2, 2020
- PrathaDenmark0 contributionsAn amazing experienceI booked on this tour not quite sure what to expect. I was delighted. The guide, Trapio, I hope I have splet his name correctly if not I apologise was brilliant. As a professional scientist he had all the facts at his finger tips and was not shy to explain things to us clearly. He even managed to conjure two wild platypus for us to see which was great. The night walk was excellent and we saw quite a few of the animals not normally seen. Lastly the dinner was good and the meal a delight. I cannot recommend this tour too highly to anyone who wants a really Aussie expeeience.Written March 1, 2020
- 765GWH0 contributionsVery interesting experienceMy family thoroughly enjoyed this tour experience. Seeing so many animals in their natural, uniquely Australian habitat was very interesting. The highlight for us were the two massive “trees”. They’re actually vines known to be 600 years old, and were the inspiration for the movie Avatar. The other highlight was the platypus. We are very lucky to be able to say we saw a wild one! Your effort in finding him was very much appreciated!!! Thank you Paul for imparting all your knowledge about the flora and fauna. We enjoyed spending our last night in the tropical north with you.Written February 7, 2020
- Udita P0 contributionsInformative, interesting and funSince the moment I decided to visit Australia, seeing the biodiversity of this unique place has been on my priority list. And this tour helped me with just that. We saw the platypus 3 times! The platypus is an elusive animal but our guide knew exactly where to look and after a while of patiently waiting and searching, we saw it! That was the highlight of the tour for me. Other than platypus, we also saw a wide variety of animals - tree kangaroos, several possums, a gecko, flying foxes, an adorably curious bandicoot and more. Our guide was so knowledgeable! He answered every single question he was asked, showed us some unique plants, demonstrated to us how wasps leave larvae on leaves by opening one, held a toad on torchlight to show it's organs and heartbeat, showed us an exoskeleton to explain the inner body of an organism. The lunch was also good. I will definitely recommend this tour to anyone who visits Cairns. Totally worth it!Written December 23, 2019
- emusdad0 contributionsCan you leave a sixth star?I guess not, I tried. Where do I begin? First, with owner operator Paul. What a friendly and knowledgeable guide and owner. You can tell people love what they do when they do their job like Paul. He made sure that when their wasn’t animals to see, there was info to learn, and we learned a lot. I did several outdoors tours like this one, and in each one, learned something new, that was the same here. I learned things from Paul I didn’t learn from the other four tours I had taken with my daughter. On to the stars of the show, the animals. We saw a dragon, not too big of a deal, saw a couple actually. We saw a platypus and those are hard to get a picture of. Best thing to do is take video and get a screen shot. We didn’t see one tree kangaroo, we saw four. We also saw some little spiny thing with spikes, it was a mammal and an egg layer. That was a rare find. I forgot how to spell it. We saw flying foxes, rats, rat kangaroos and flying foxes. I had two main wildlife goals for this trip. To swim with a sea turtle and I did that with ocean safari and to catch a python in the wild. I didn’t think it was gonna happen, if it was gonna happen it would have happened on this trip. I had given up. On the way home Paul came to a quick stop on the road. He said, snake. I was out of the van as fast as he was and sure enough, a six foot amethyst python was partially on the road I’m a dangerous spot. Paul picked it up and handed it to me. I held him for a couple minutes so others could let him and get a pic. He wrapped around my arm and urinated on me, even better! And then Paul let me take him off the side of the road to release him to safety. The night couldn’t have gone better or ended better. A dream come true with wait a while tours.Written November 28, 2019
- loveshak220 contributionsInteresting and fun tour!Paul was a great guide and I loved seeing all the animals of the area! While we didn't see everything we set out to find, we saw a lot - flying foxes, platypus (!!!), dragons (?), bandicoots, pademelons, red-back spider (from a safe distance!), wallabies, and lots of birds. Definitely a fun tour from Cairns!Written November 23, 2019
- Imliooper0 contributionsWe struck lucky...This is a tour worth doing if you are interested in seeing flora and fauna in the rainforest habitat by day and by night. It is a small group of ten people who were picked from various points in an 11-seater van. Our driver-guide was a biologist at the University and so was very knowledgable and had facts and figures at his fingertips. He was passionate about preserving the rainforest and was repeatedly emphasising the damage caused to the environment by deforestation and logging within the rainforest which has now been allowed by the Australian government due to lobbying by logging companies. (Surely this would not have happened in the UK thanks to tree huggers and their ilk). He decried the laying waste of the environment and resultant species extinctions. The trip gave one an insight into the plants, trees and creatures of the rainforest. We began the tour by a visit to the impressive 500 year old cathedral fig tree in the Atherton tablelands Then setting out from the edge of Lake Barrine (which is created within a volcanic crater) we trudged through the forest while we saw the holes in the side walls of the forest earth created as burrows by the tarantula and cane toad. The wait-a-while vine after which the tour was named hung deceptively, innocently from the forest canopy. Actually it is the rattan vine and the tentacles in its stem will cause you to wait-a-while before you can escape! The termite mound on the tree was amazing. The kingfisher makes a hole in the mound and creates a ready made nest. Living in harmony with the termites, the bird returns to the nest the following years. Boyd’s forest dragon was impressive. The tiny skink lizard did come out of the tree hollow to pose. We saw the fallen leaves piled up by the brush turkey. It uses this pile to lay its clutch of eggs and the heat generated in the process of composting allows the eggs to hatch. And on coming out from the forest we’re rewarded by one of these birds strutting on the road. We could hear bird calls but they were high in the canopy and not always visible. We saw the strychnine plant and learnt that chewing a couple of leaves can be fatal. Another fact was that the same end result would occur if one chewed the leaves of the eucalyptus tree whose essential ooils we are familiar with. After dinner in a restaurant in Yungaburra we set out for platypus hunting in Peterson Creek. We were rewarded by a large male seen swimming and ducking in the creek. Before that we were treated to the cicadas in intense mating call for some ten minutes followed by silence as the forest went quiet for the night. and briefly saw the small insect eating bats skimming the water. Then we drove to the edge of the forest to find several possums atop the branches (one had its baby riding piggyback), flying foxes, a tree mouse and a whole family of pademelons (mini kangaroos) by spotlight. Overall a very successful day and night tour. You are of course limited by what you see in any given day/night. But we think we struck lucky.Written November 10, 2019

This was a really fun excursion. Pickup went smoothly, with good communication beforehand. I recommend reading the details of the trip and visiting their website in advance, so you know what is coming. Travelers prone to motion sickness really should take meds for it before the ~30mins of very very curvy road near start+end. The guide was knowledgeable and the vehicle was good. He spent plenty of time on the microphone explaining things along the way and giving facts. We stopped to see agile wallabies, which was a good taster, then had a quick tea and went into the upland rainforest for a nice walk. And then a short drive to the highlight, Yungaburra, where we were lucky enough to be among the 90% that get to see platypus (2 in our case; both feeding; 1 of them for a very long time). This segment of the trip gave us plenty of time for watching and taking pics. It's wildlife, not a zoo, so you're not guaranteed to see everything, but it's a great site. We strolled around here for a while (it was muddy, so if it's potentially wet bring good shoes!!!!!), catching glimpses of pademelons too. Then off to dinner nearby, which was good food in a nice hotel-restaurant. And then once evening came, back to the same site for a walk to see the bats take off, and look for any other wildlife. Then a few more short drives around the area to walk along the road and look (in guide's torchlight) for more wildlife. We weren't lucky enough to spot tree kangaroos, but the guide was excellent at spotting and (with laser) pointing out 3 species of opossum and some other beasties. And he explained some stars we saw out, including the Southern Cross. Then to a final site, a boardwalk to gigantic fig/strangler vine trees that were hugely impressive. And the relatively brisk drive home. Importantly, the guide was a good driver and that's very important as those curvy roads could be extremely dangerous. I never felt unsafe. Fabulous trip; thanks!

Regarding the wildlife experience I really enjoyed this and made the whole trip worthwhile. Saw rat kangaroos, possums, pademelons, a platypus, loads of interesting birds, lizards and spiders which was amazing. Our guide knew a lot about these animals and i found it very enjoyable learning.
On the negative side, I felt the tour guide was unnecessarily rude at times, patronising when I left the binoculars in the van for our night walk and when I asked a couple of questions about the animals. Iater avoided asking questions to avoid another condescending remark. The drive was long, up over mountains so was winding a lot, which was fine. Although myself and another customer where sliding side to side and gripping onto our belts it was so fast around the corners coming down at night. Also tailgating another car in front (which the passengers didn't appreciate either and gave the middle finger back, but it didn't change anything).
Overall I really enjoyed the trip from the wildlife point of view but felt the atmosphere was a bit too tense to my liking (maybe I just came on a bad day).

Glad you found the wildlife interesting and I am sorry you found me condescending. I was going for more of a tease type of thing as having reminded you about having the bino’s a couple of times you still forgot them!

Very special tour! We enjoyed it a lot, saw tree kangaroos, the platypus and other wild animals. It started to rain a lot so we also experienced the rainy rain forest during the night. We loved it and would highly recommend it to anybody who loves the nature.

We were a group of 10 in a minibus and the only Australians with others being from the UK, USA and Singapore. Our guide was informative and definitely knew where to look when it came to platypuses. The drive to the Atherton Tablelands from Cairns was very windy and if you are prone to car sickness i’d take a tablet before you head off. We were lucky to see 3 platypuses up very close and being very active too. Even for an Australian seeing a platypus in the wild is special. We went to a local hotel for a decent dinner ( you could choose from the hotel’s menu) and this was included in the tour price. The nocturnal walk after dinner wasn’t that exciting for an Aussie seeing only possums and bats but for our overseas visitors it was good. If you want to see a platypus in the wild i’d definitely recommend this tour.

Can’t say enough good things about this tour! Paul went above and beyond to find us a platypus on our tour. Paul was a super fun guide and very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna. Touring the rainforest at night was such an incredible and neat experience. I would recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the area/see some cool wildlife and have a great time doing it.

This trip is a must! It has been my favourite part of our holiday in Cairns so far. We saw, heard, experienced (and even tasted!) so much wildlife, much of which is right under your nose and you would never see it without this excellent guide! Anything we picked up, pointed out or heard in the distance, our guide could tell us exactly what it was and we learned so much. Our group was a mix of people from different backgrounds and a wide age gap, yet the atmosphere created by our guide was so relaxed and our group was instantly chatting and getting to know each other from the start. It was such a unique experience so spot wildlife at night. We saw many Boyd forrest dragons, tasted fruit (quandong), watched a brush turkey building it's nest, saw a platypus swimming and diving in the water and climbing up on the bank to scratch, saw glowing fungus in the dark, amazing trees like the curtain figs, and spotted a few rat kangaroos, chowchilla birds, a green tree frog, big huntsman spiders, bats, green ringtail possums, coppery and common brush tail possums, and an atherton jungle python. Overall it is a unique experience which feels like you are being brought around by a friend who knows all the secrets! The bonus is that there is no artificial element to this trip in that none of the wildlife are disturbed, fed or coaxed in any way. You just have the privilege of observing them while they do what they do! Thank you Paul for a great experience.

This was my favorite tour during my short stay in Cairns. Wildlife watching can be unpredictable, yet this tour truly delivered in allowing us to see some of Australia's elusive mammal species like the tree kangaroo and the duck-billed platypus (2 of them!). The tour guide, Paul, was knowledgeable and provided lots of useful information about the culture, history and ecosystem of the region. He was also a great driver navigating the incredibly windy Gillies Highway (do follow their advice to take motion sickness medication!). In all, we saw about 10 mammal species, along with some birds, lizards and turtles, so a great experience overall!

Our tour guide was a PhD professor who studies insects and the rainforest, so we had a very informative tour. The weather was perfect, with little rain and comfortable temperatures. We did spot a few platypuses, a tree kangaroo, a few possums, frogs and spiders. Without the guide it would have been near impossible to find these animals, so it worth the tour instead of going it alone.
The ride is slow and winding- take ginger tablets! Expect 1 hour 30 min ride each way from The Esplande area of Cairns. Tea break was minimal and dinner was fair.

So I asked my wife, what did she want to see when we flew to Australia. Her #1 request was to see a platypus in the wild. My first reaction, was seriously how the heck am I going to pull this off. After doing quite a bit of research, I came across wait-a while tour that claimed 90% success rate seeing a platypus. I was skeptical, but booked it. We just came back from this tour, and I can honestly say, 90% success rate was probably too low. We went to a creek that had multiple platypus, and could tell they were there every night feeding. WE weren't 100 yards away, we were within 25 feet from them. Was so cool! We spent 30-40 minutes just following and watching them. Paul the guide was extremely knowledgable about everything on the tour. After that it was all gravy, and we got lots of it. Saw a rat kangaroo, Tree Kangaroo (Which is extremely hard to see in the wild) and a Pademelon. I loved that the tour allowed us to walk around the rainforest looking for these animals. Went to several different locations spotting different animals. Dinner was included at a local restaurant and was great food. This is a small personal tour. We had 7 people in our total party, and I I believe max is 10 peoplel, If you are debating whether or not to book this tour, I would strongly suggest to book it! We spent 3 weeks all over Australia, and this was the highlight of our trip. You need to book it! My whole family agreed that this was even better than the Great Barrier Reef.

We are just back from our Atherton Tablelands Rain Forest by night tour with Paul. It was amazing. We are a family of five with three girls aged 11,9 and 7 and we all loved it. Paul knew so much about the forest and animals and answered every question they had. The trip was split up brilliantly so that the travel was short and we saw so many different things. We were lucky enough to see the platypus, snakes, possums, tree kangaroos, musky rat kangaroos, pademelon and the cathedral and curtain figs.
We would thoroughly recommend everyone goes on this tour. We loved it. Thank you Paul.
