About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Paradise067745220090 contributionsRecommendedWe loved it! Awe inspiring views and the wildlife viewing was fantastic. Our driver and guide were also excellent. We weren't staying in the same area as the other guests and our guide made sure we had transport to get home safe. The service was above and beyond!Written August 12, 2024
- Meander413241592510 contributionsA great place for a homestay with a Spanish speaking grandma in San Cristobal de las CasasI recently returned from a week at a Spanish Language school in this town near the Guatemalan border. I stayed in the private house of a woman recommended by the school, Instituto Jovel, which I also recommend. Flory Burguete owns a four bedroom home in the middle of town, about a three block walk from the school. You do not need to be attending the school to stay with her. You can book directly through her. You can pay her to prepare meals if you wish. I did and was very happy with her cooking. She intentionally prepares meals well known in the area. She does not speak English but is very quick with her translation app. She is a delightful, helpful woman and added so much to my time in San Cristóbal. The home itself is authentically local, has two separate toilets and a separate shower. The yard is a lovely garden. The altitude in the city is 7,000 feet so the temperature is usually cool. If you're going to that area, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a stay with her. Cell: +52 967 169-1002. - Dreamer113747240160 contributionsLanguage selection gets ignoredBe careful when booking with this company. I booked the English tour with included dinner and got a fully Spanish tour without dinner. When I complained I got no explanation and only a partial refund of 23 dollars, which is basically just the price difference to the Spanish tour. I obviously didn't understand a single word during the whole tour and had problems communicating about time schedules and pickup times with the drivers. The whole experience was unpleasant. Would not recommend this company.Written November 20, 2023
- 620ronaldb0 contributionsStay Away From Ecoexperiences ToursSumidero Canyon itself is quite nice. My review is specifically in regards to the tour operator Ecoexperiences. This company advertises, and charges more for, a tour with an English speaking guide and a buffet meal. Neither of those things were provided on my tour, yet the fee remained significantly higher than the normal cost. Trying to get an adjustment from them has resulted in one lie in which they stated they would make an unspecified adjustment that never transpired. My advice, shop price only, the added value features are a scam. You will find I am not the only reviewer here with similar experiences.Written September 1, 2023
- Alba363330 contributionsLacandona RaftingWe recommend 100% the Lacandona Rafting experience. Alejandro was our fun, acknowledgeable and experienced guide for the day. We had a misunderstanding regarding lunch which was nicely solved by Ecotours. There is approximately 3.5 hours between the activity and the pick up time which can be used to visit Bonampak. We suggest organising this with the agency in advance.Written August 7, 2023

- JustAskBexx0 contributionsWORST HOSTEL IN CUENCA!My companion was extremely ill with a shattered hip and let someone stay in his room for the night because he's kind and always supports those who have nothing. Unfortunately this person turned out to have a drug addiction and a major bipolar disorder and ended up destroying part of the hotels furniture. Robert, whose name was the reservation was in, could do nothing about this man he couldn't even get out of bed to see what was happening with this crazy person he had let stay in his room. As they were taking Robert to the emergency room, and we were trying to remove his belongings from his room, the hotel would not let us take his things unless I gave them something in return which I did I gave them my $800 phone. Now they will not give it back and are claiming damages from this couch which was worth maybe $50 saying it was apraised is over 2,000! What kind of establishment does this to a man who was nothing but kind, had nothing to do with the damage done to the silly old couch worth probably nothing, and the police have the guy's name and the incident on record of who did actually damage the property yet they're still holding robert, who is still in the hospital, accountable for it. I want my phone back for I had nothing to do with this and was not a guest in the hostel to begin with. I would never stay here again for they will steal your possessions and then claim you owe them thousands of more money than you do! This is the worst place you could ever stay! I'm bringing a lawsuit up against them to get my phone back and taking the police there as well. Don't make a reservation because it'll probably be shut down by the time you get there.Written June 24, 2023
- Tennesteban0 contributionsA spectacular way to experience Cañón Sumidero. This experience takes you approximately 30km through the entire canyon from Lake Chicoasén to the dock at Chiapas de Corzo. The tour guide was well-informed and you get to see the towering canon walls, wildlife (birds, crocodiles, monkeys!). I would highly recommend this for anyone who's interested in experiencing Mexico's natural beauty.Written May 11, 2023

- Paradise685953195580 contributionsexcellent short visit to Zinacantan and San Juan ChamulaA nice, short, outing to two different Tzotzil villages. Our visit to Zinacantan happened to correspond to the Festival of San Sebastian, so the streets were crowded with local people wearing traditional special occasion clothing characteristic of that village. Our driver, Francisco, was not an official guide but was very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. He speaks Spanish and Tzotzil but not English. By coincidence he was also our driver from the Tuxtla airport to San Cristobal. Shuttle van was new and comfortable, with just 5 people in the group.Written January 24, 2023
- janellejanes0 contributionsSumidero Canyon TourMy daughter and I took this trip together. We went in December and that was a great time to go. The canyon tour started with viewing from above. Then we drove down to the bottom where we went on the boat tour. We both thought is was beautiful and very informative. It is a long day but we’ll worth it.Written January 9, 2023

This tour includes a lot and, as you'd expect, means it's a long day. Very early morning pick up times from Palenque, swapping buses part way through which meant my wife was stuck at the front of the bus for the first few hours while I was stuck at the very back.
Luckily, when we stopped at a roadside cafe for 'breakfast' the family at the back of the bus took pity on us as it was our honeymoon and swapped places so my wife could join me at the back. The ride in the back was painful, the road surfaces are dreadful but at least we were together.
The breakfast cafe place has a good thing going with the tour groups and runs very smoothly. There's not much selection and, being vegetarian, we weren't terribly impressed but others seemed fine with it.
A few painful hours on board the bus finally got us to the river. Here you walk across wooden planks (makeshift bridges) to your waiting long boats.
The journey along the river between Mexico and Guatamala was beautiful. We saw locals washing their clothes and fishing, then further up the river we saw a crocodile! The scenery was just fantastic.
We paid extra to have an English speaking guide who took us around Yaxchilan and then, later, Bonampak ruins. He was eccentric and very knowledgable.
At Yaxchilan, as well as climbing and walking amongst the ruins, we saw howler monkeys shouting over each other's territories. The ruins are fascinating and one has even been claimed by some gorgeous fruit bats.
Bonampak saw us head back down the beautiful river, back on the bus for another painful journey. A brief stop at another roadside eatery for a three course meal (soup, cheese wrap for us vegetarians and a lemon cake/ tart for desert) which was pleasant before arriving at a settlement owned by the Laconda people.
Only the Laconda people can take people into the sacred site of Bonampak so we had to swap to their bus for the even bumpier ride through the jungle to Bonampak.
Bonampak is well preserved and has some of the best art work of its kind that still exists. If not for the muggy conditions and the swarms of mosquitos and numerous other bitey bugs, it would have been a fascinating end to the days ruins. The insects just wouldn't leave everyone alone, regardless of what insect repellent we wore. Such a shame but something that can't be helped.
Some of our group had opted to stay with local Laconda family's for the night so we dropped them off and headed back to Palenque, making a stop at the roadside cafe again for 'supplies' and to pick up rowdy tourists heading in the same direction as us.
We arrived back at our hotel in darkness, absolutely knackered and very grateful to get off the awfully uncomfortable minibus!
All in all, a very mixed day.
Yaxchilan and the boat ride were fantastic.
Our English speaking guide was helpful.
Bonampak would have been fascinating if we could have relaxed and absorbed the information.
The food was mixed.
The transport was dreadfully uncomfortable, painful even if you're near the back, and seemed to last forever. We are glad we did it but wouldn't rush to do it again!

The trip was good but the night before we were told we would be picked up at 530 instead of 6. We payed extra for the English tour but that was just for the ruins. You would think they could have had the bus driver hand out a translation of the gist of what he was saying. Paying extra was definitely not worth the expense. The guide spoke more in Spanish to the group than English. And the driver must have problems with night driving because he kept using his high beams on even though the trucks would flash at him. So they kept their high beams on. It was very bright so I wore my sunglasses. Several times the driver would be talking to friends or conducting business when we were all on the bus waiting to go. It was a long day and it was frustrating

Beautiful Mayan ruins, great boat ride to Yaxchilan. We stopped for a buffet breakfast before the first ruins. Ordered lunch before the boat ride so it was ready when we returned. Super hot and humid in the jungle! Bonampak was after lunch. The paintings were gorgeous and so well preserved. There wasn’t dinner, but we stopped for five minutes to use the bathroom and were told we could have coffee. It was the same place we had breakfast. The guide that came with us was really great. Spoke multiple languages and took his time explaining the ruins. Our driver was intense, he drove really fast and hit a lot of things on the road. We had to stop multiple times so he could check to see if something was wrong. It was a very long day, but wonderful to see the ruins, the Bonampak painting especially.

We were allocated to a bus with different tourists from other tours providers, all together. We first dropped off a German couple who had been mistakenly picked up at 6am instead of 9am and subsequently were on the wrong tour (probably to maximize costs). This changed the schedule of the day: we first went to the pier , dropped off the couple heading to Guatemala, then we were told that no boats were available for the yaxchilian tour. We waited for almost one hour for our driver to come back (after taking the couple to immigration). We then drove back to Bonampak did the tour there and returned to the yaxchilian starting pier. By that time our allocated lunch time had past and no boats were yet available. To save money our guide decided to wait for another group going to share the boat costs. We nearly waited one hour for them to finish their lunch meanwhile not having any lunch for ourselves as promised. We forced the hand an left our tour leader off (we were 13 people on the boat and needed 12 to leave for yaxchilian) so that we could start finally the tour. We finally managed to visit the site and come back (wonderful site and great on-site local guide). Lunch was skipped and dinner was provided instead around 6.45pm , first meal after the 7am breakfast. On the way back (unknowingly) we stopped multiple times to drop off and pickup customers performing seemingly now a bus service rather then the exclusive tour we paid for.
We finally reached the hotel around 10.30pm.
We booked through Viator paying nearly 200 USD for a boutique tour with translation included (as my girlfriend doesn’t speak spanish). It turned out that the translator was not included and the tour leader did her best to attempt in translating the on-site guides, but definitely not matching the expectations or the other tours we took in Mérida and Mexico City.
We are asking for a refund and we strongly not recommend this specific tour.

Our tour was all in all not a good experience. The pickup was not very friendly and we were not informed how the day would pass.
The drivers were reckless and the drives were dangerous at least to international standards. The guide in Bonampakmwas treating us like first graders, had no plan how and what he wanted to show us.
The guide in Yaxchilan, however was superb, interested and motivated, well versed in english and nature themes.
Due to an obviously high number of visitors, the schdule of the trip was changed, without us being notified. Thus, lunch was at 16:30 after breakfast at 8:00.
The guide at Yaxchilan was paid by us but therer were other people with us in the boat and so, we shared the guide with a group,of 12 people and the person from the tour operator did not even mention to the guide, that we were his employers.
All in all, the tour was not worth the money spent.
Things can go wrong and changes need to be made. But I expect to be informed about it. And If I am the one paying for something, I should be the one benefitting from it.

Its several hours drive from Palenque to this site and then must leave vehicle to then go with the Lacondonia people who oversees this area. The paintings are wonderful but its a rough drive in places, 3 seperate fees apply, and the people care taking this place are offered zero info....they also were not on time with our vehicle transfer and seemed to care less. Someother Mexican government entity needs to supervise this place

I will be in Palenque on July 21, 2019. I am traveling alone and want to take the tour to Yaxchilan on July 23. How can I do this without another person traveling with me?
Thank you for your help.....Maria

If you have the entire day I would definitely do both Bonampak and Yax. Bonampak is very unique with its pristine paintings. There are numerous companies in the town of Palenque that you could arrange a complete tour with and this time of the yr they should be empty due to heat and humidity. good luck

Is this tour upgradable to a private tour? We have it booked already but reading the reviews makes me wonder if we can have it be private for the 4 of us so the transportation problems in the reviews do not happen or have you corrected the issues?
Please advise.
