We were in Mirissa for 1 day on our journey through Sri Lanka specifically to go Whale watching. We arrived and camped in the SALT bar for lunch to mull over our options. We got chatting and the bar sorted everything out for us. There is a standard fee of $50 for many of the boats now set by the government so you will do well to find it cheaper! Tuk Tuk arrived and when we got to the boat we had reserved seats (courtesy of the SALT bar). We were welcomed with Tea/coffee with ginger biscuits (good for sickness) and a sickness tablet. Once we set sail were given a choice of hot dog or cheese sandwich (veg option) or both. There was ample water provided and fruit along the way. We had to wait a while as the water was choppy but after abut an hour and a half we were joined by the dolphins which swam with the boat - fantastic. There was little whale activity but the captain persevered and after about 4 hours we found one - a big Blue Whale. We had several photo opportunities of him surfacing and swimming maybe 100 feet away before he dived and we got the shot of the tail diving :-) He then emerged about 50 feet in front of the boat and we followed him for about 2 or 3 minutes getting some cracking photos until he once again dived away. We returned to shore after around 5 hours. There was some grumbling from the passengers we had been at sea for too long, but my wife and I came to see whales and we saw them due to the perseverance of the crew, so we returned thoroughly delighted.
