About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- lhasacompton0 contributionsSights and starsGreat way to catch several sights and get out among the stars. Our group was a hoot! More fun sharing the experience with other travelers who share your interests.Written September 19, 2024
- Sandya-and-Erik0 contributionsGreat experience, but way overpriced compared to alternativesThe tour was a great experience. Nice dinner and good hot choc at the end. Marcus drove the Saddle Road, set us up for sunset viewing near a parking lot and if there were no partial clouds obscuring would have set up the solarscope, and then drove to a secluded spot for 1.30-2 hours using his portable Dobsonian telescope giving each of us turns to watch e.g. Alpha Centauri (a twin star!), Venus and as top of the bill Saturn with the clearly visible ring pattern. And in between used the laser pointer to show lots of stars and nebulas. Even had 3 falling stars, a rarity! However we were disappointed that all only went to 6000 feet (2 km), meaning we missed the far better sunset views including ocean from the visitors centre. (Summit is not really needed to visit, partly due to sensitivity for local culture but also as it’s simply too cold and can bring altitude sickness). Company delivers as advertised, but we should have read better – though the pickup options in Kona for this tour were amongst the best. The tour would, both because of less delivered quality and of far less fuel cost for the company compared to the other routes, need to be sold at USD 75 at least below the current level. For the current level of price, go for a tour that visits the visitor centre (9000 ft/3km) for sunset vistas (and stargazing similar to this one) like Mauna Kea Summit sunset and stars, Mauna Kea Summit tour, Mauna Kea stargazing experience.Written August 27, 2024
- P9005LEannec0 contributionsGreat way to see The Big IslandWe chose this tour randomly and we are so glad we did. Our guide Marcus was amazing- very knowledgeable on the entire island. The tour was close to 11 hours long but it seemed much shorter then that as it was so well presented by Marcus. We saw amazing scenery with very diverse landscapes. Food supplied was excellent and no shortage on cold water. Would highly recommended this tour to anyone. Thanks Marcus - we really enjoyed our day with youWritten August 9, 2024
- jeremywY3966UW0 contributionsGreat trip- terrible customer serviceBooked tour through Trip Advisor. KapohoKine Adventures called to say the booking was wrong and I'd need to rebook. I went through a different service instead. They never cancelled the reservation and despite me never traveling with them - charged me over $400. They were defensive and adamant about keeping my payment. There are lots of companies offering this tour - (I actually used Mauna Kea Sunset & Stars Tour through Taikobo Hawaii - they were fantastic) I would highly recommend going with one that isn't going to stick it to the customer if there are misunderstandings or other unavoidable irregularities.Written July 28, 2024
- hrjohns10 contributionsSecrets of Puna with NCLWould definitely recommend the Secrets of Puna Tour! Was able to see some beautiful scenery including lava fields, a black sand beach, beautiful cliffs and several sea turtles! Our guide was Marcus and he was FANTASTIC!!!! He was super friendly and very accommodating. He didn't rush us at all and made the trip very enjoyable...he was just go with the flow! Would definitely ensure you wear closed toe shoes as they're required and just know that "real" bathrooms aren't available often and the porta potties didn't always have toilet paper so you may want to bring some with you. BUT don't let that deter you...this was one of the best tours of the week! Make sure you get Marcus as your guide!Written July 15, 2024
- lisaaD6397PJ0 contributionsTake this tour - the stargazing is unmatched! You’ll never see as many stars as you will on this excursion! We were staying in Waikoloa so we drove Hawaiian belt road to do some sight seeing and then had late lunch at Hawaiian Style Cafe (amazing) in Hilo before meeting our tour guide Henry. Henry was very knowledgeable with each part of the tour. We drove through the gardens and learned of Hawaiian history on our way to Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots. They were cool and then we went to the top to see the island’s oldest Banyan tree. Next We drove to the lava cabes and went in about 1/2 mile. It was not tough to walk but tou wNt to wear closed shoes like sneakers. Henry explained about how the heat of lava created different formations. Then we drove anout 45 minutes up Mauna Kea for view of sunset above the clouds and dinner of sandwiches and salads. We did not go to the peak because of lower oxygen levels and cool temps. Henry gives great overview of star formations and uses laser to point out constellations. The Dobsonian telescope proves you with beautiful star sighting and is also used to show you deep space. This tour was mime and my son’s favorite thing we did on the big island.Written May 8, 2024

- Miss Morna G0 contributionsA good quick guide to volcanic action in HawaiiWe had a very knowledgeable tour guide in Nate - he was able to help us understand the processes going on to create the different volcanic landscapes. - pufferfishdeal0 contributionsBeware and book this only if you want to do charity! The worst experience I would say. They don’t tell you properly that they don’t go to the summit. They say “they avoid taking you to the native land.” In fact, they don’t even take you to the visitor center. They take you off of highway and set up a telescope and show you 5-6 stars and talk for 1 hour or so. We were just 6k feet high. They give you a morsel of rice and exactly 4 zucchini pieces for dinner, which could cost you $2. They say that they provide hot chocolate and coffee, but we didn’t get anything. It was such a waste of time and money. There were 3 buses from the same company at the same time…everyone of them were pissed or surprised that the way they scammed us. I’m not sure who rated 5 stars to this tour? May be their own people? I want to rate them zero so that others can save their money.Written January 5, 2024
- 248jbc0 contributionsAmazing tour, entertaining and educationalOk, so Ray is a wealth of information, and Sam is just as informative. We did a Captain Cook snorkeling and Coffee tour in Kona, Hawaii, and my wife was the happiest I’ve seen her. I am here to say Wow, she and I will do it again.Written January 3, 2024
- iowacityia0 contributionsSunday, December 3rd day tour.My wife and I took this van day tour as a Holland America cruise excursion. The title of the excursion was Hawaii Volcanoes National Park & Waterfall Explorer. We were picked up from the cruise terminal. Greeted by Hunter, he would be our driver, and our tour guide. Let me tell you right away that Hunter was great! Both as a driver, and especially as a tour guide. He is a pro. A great speaker. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. Our van tour started with an informative drive through Hilo. We did visit a couple of wonderful waterfalls, then Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Including the crater, steam vents, the visitors center, and then the lava tube. While by the crater we stopped for a nice picnic lunch. I think this ended up being around a 6-7hr tour. It went fast. This was our last excursion while visiting the Hawaiian islands on this cruise. And our last tour ended up being our best. Hunter did a great job. I would certainly do this tour again.Written December 13, 2023
- Loritravels110 contributionsA Fabulous Day in Hilo!!I booked the Waterfalls and Volcano National Park Tour through Princess Cruises. We docked in Hilo at 8:00 and met our tour guide, Victor, in the terminal at 8:20. There were 12 of us in a modern van. Victor was so warm and personable, and made us all feel instantly comfortable! We spent over 7 hours touring different waterfalls and looking at the volcanos. He made the history of Hilo come to life! I learned so much! We had lunch in the afternoon, plenty of bathroom breaks, and an opportunity to pick up some souvenirs. The tour itinerary was good……but Victor was fabulous!!! I highly recommend any tour that he is leading!!Written November 10, 2023
- Kathryn C0 contributionsStellar Sam and stargazingWe were very fortunate to have great weather for viewing some constellations and planets (Saturn and Jupiter were viewable) with the solar telescope. Our guide was Sam who brought his environmental science background to the tour and was also incredibly knowledgeable about the local culture and, of course, astronomy. Also very thankful for the coats they provided, it was below 50 degrees at our stargazing point! A must do excursion!Written October 21, 2023
