Travel up Mauna Kea for a small-group sunset and stargazing tour by luxury 4WD van. Leave the off-road drive to the pros, and ride from Kona or Waikoloa to a historic Hawaiian ranch for a picnic dinner. Continue to the Big Island's tallest peak for sunset, then use powerful telescopes to observe constellations from Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. Hear commentary from your guide, and keep warm with the provided jackets and hot chocolate.
What to Expect

Meet your guide at a central location in Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa, then relax in the deluxe 4WD van as your small group heads to a ranch at the base of Mauna Kea.

At the ranch, sit down for a hot picnic-style dinner (sample menu under Itinerary below). After dinner, your guide provides a warm jacket with hood to help keep you warm at the Mauna Kea summit. Return to the van for the ascent to the summit, learning from your guide about the Big Island's natural and cultural history along the way.

When you reach the summit, enjoy views of the sunset, Mauna Loa, the Haleakala volcano on Maui, and other landmarks. Then drive down to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station at 9,000 feet (2,743 meters), home to more than a dozen international observatories that draw scientists from around the world.

Your guide sets up a telescope and provides an astronomy lesson as you star gaze. Stay warm with hot drinks and dessert before returning to Kona at the end of your tour.

Hawaii Forest & Trails Fabulous Mauna Kea Summit and Stars

JEFF our guide and driver was great. The meal provided was very good. One thing to be aware of is the VERY BUMPY(unpaved) road for around 4 miles to get to the top. But it is the only way to get there. We got to...More

Epic experience

Seeing the sunset from Muana Kea is an awesome sight to behold. It’s rare to get sights like this unless trekking through high mountains, and here you get driven up in a nice van to the peak to see a spectacular view. Our tour guide...More

Felt like we were on top of the world

Overall this was a very cool experience and even though it was really cold, we are glad we did it. We had a full van and overall it was a comfortable ride (very tall inside, not claustrophobic at all). We learned all about how the...More

Awesome !

Jeff was our tour guide. I’ve never known anyone so knowledgeable on virtually any question that was thrown his way. Dinner was delicious, parkas and gloves were greatly appreciated, as was the hot cocoa and brownies. Then getting to look through the telescope to see...More

Trip to the summit to see the stars

Starting with sunset high atop Mauna Kea and then star gazing afterwards was an amazing experience. Jeff was a top notch guide and very informative. Would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. If you are going, dress warmly. It's chilly up there.

Probably cause the trip is kinda harsh. You need to get up of Mauna Kea and the height might be too much to bear for such a little child. I went there last summer and at the end of the trip I was starting suffering -mainly... More
