      How do the locals live?
It was interesting to get a feeling of how people live in this city. We were also given historical information as well as religious history of the locals. We also visited the vegetable market and fish market. The tuna were huge. We had a wonderful time and this tour could have been longer.

You will not regret booking this excursion!!!!!!!!!
On the Male' city tour, you will get a great walking tour with a lot of history. There is a good mix of historical and modern Male' with a friendly and knowledgeable guide who loves the city and country. I don't remember his name, but he was a great tour guide. The park was great, and the houses were beautiful!! Very strongly recommended!

Support local, more sustainable travel w Secret Paradise
So glad we found Secret Paradise. We booked with them to plan a few days before we embarked on a surf trip and they made the whole experience seamless. This included airport pick up, transfer and tour on Gulhi, Mafuushi tour, meeting Save the Beach outside Male. UB, our guide, was super knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Accommodations were fine. Appreciate their efforts to support local guesthouses and also to encourage more sustainable travel, including understanding and offsetting the carbon of travel. Highly recommend- whether for your full stay or as an add on so you can get a much better sense of real life in the Maldives!

Highly recommended this fascinating full day walking tour, especially if you like to learn.
Secret Paradise provided two great days on a recent round the world cruise, with 29 ports where I and friends (up to 46 of us) did tours with local operators. In each port I read scores of reviews, to find the best tour operator, and Secret Paradise was easily the one in Malé, Maldives. But BOOK EARLY as they are so good, they fill up. I was happy to be the beneficiary of a cancellation, which allowed us to do their 3 Point Snorkeling Tour, as well as their Full Day Walking Tour. We were three on the walking tour, and two on the snorkeling tour, with Ub, our excellent guide, leading both tours. He's been with Secret Paradise eight years, and we were happy to have him, learning heaps about Muslim culture and life in Male. Especially impressive was his handling of calls to prayer, and our being there during Ramadan. The fish market was super, great to be there with a guide, it felt we were less of an intrusive force with a local showing us around, and thankfully able to explain things, identify fish, answer our questions. Kudos to Ruth and her team, a quality operation. She was a pleasure to work with in planning and communication. And a special thanks for keeping their group sizes small, with a focus on the environment. I much look forward to returning in the future, when I and my group will do their Full Day North Malé Island Hopping with Ruth & Mash.

A great day of snorkeling in Male thanks to the quality operation of Secret Paradise.
Secret Paradise provided two great days on a recent round the world cruise, with 29 ports where I and friends (up to 46 of us) did tours with local operators. In each port I read scores of reviews, to find the best tour operator, and Secret Paradise was easily the one in Male, Maldives. But BOOK EARLY as they are so good, they fill up. I was happy to be the beneficiary of a cancellation, which allowed us to do their 3 Point Snorkeling Tour, as well as their Full Day Walking Tour. We were a group of two on their 3 Point Snorkeling tour, and three on their Full Day walking tour, with Ub, our excellent guide, leading both tours. He's been with Secret Paradise eight years, and we were happy to have him. On the day I saw 9 black tipped reef sharks, one within three meters, many many unicorn fish - similar to a pencil above their forehead, and a favorite were the Indian Ocean oriental sweetlips ... horizontally zebra striped in black and white ... with the front, tail, and fins, all bright yellow with black polka dots. At the second spot, there were a few cold places in the water, soon followed by overly hot cells. UB explained this as upwelling, which brings nutrient and food, the lifeblood of the reef. The best views were just before we got out at the last stop, around desalination intake tubes. Thousands of fish were seen on the day. A mini school of small brown fish, perhaps eight centimeters, came together, then were fast away, dispersed in a flash.

Excellent custom made itinerary and service for a budget trip
We had booked our flights and were looking for an appropriate trip. Considering the vast options from being very remote to island bustle as well as the „unusual“ means of mobility I felt overwhelmed and super relieved when I was referred to Ruth for our budget trip plans. She helped us decide on a suitable itinerary and booked accordingly. Everything from pick-up at the airport, acommodations, transfers was covered. Upon airport arrival we met our guide, who made sure we get onto the right boat and helped us with things like purchasing SIM cards and the like. The guide was giving us interesting cultural information too and was answering all our questions. She was available for any questions during our trip via whatsapp and shared confirmed transfer dates each prior evening. All the patience (in finding the best itinerary) and the service throughout was impeccable. While writing this, worth to mention that we did a budget trip to remote local islands and no 5-star resorts. However we felt treated also from the guesthouses like 5-star guests, while getting a glimpse at local life which was one of our trip goals. All the guesthouses Ruth works with have been audited by herself and she is well known to each of the guesthouse owners. Overall it felt great to tap into her network and be known as one of her customers. Needless to say, if I had booked transfers and acommodations myself, I couldn‘t even match the price she was quoting. For any future trip to Maldives, no matter what kind, I will always book throught Ruth and highly recommend her agency services.

      A fabulous Maldives trip
Maldives trip was really an amazing on. Hulhumale, Male were so good. Shopping was quite expensive. But the real fun was the resort island Medufushi.

Terrific walking tour of Male', highly recommend it
This was a really informative and educational tour of Male' by guide Ahmed Shaffaf that covered a lot in four hours - from taste-testing at the local farmers and fish markets (spotting stingrays), political history, religious history, history of local currency, visiting monuments and local beaches, and a well-timed glass of fresh mango juice mid-tour. The tour is expertly mapped out to make good use of landmarks across Male'. I found it helpful to visit the national museum ahead of the tour for context, and do a bit of reading ahead to set the context for Maldives' rich history.

Great snorkeling and sandbank tour with Nafsha
On April 20, 2024 I did this tour with Nafsha. The tour was amazing. We went snorkeling in two spots where I saw the beautiful reefs, a reef shark, and many stingrays. Knowing the tide was descent high, I wasn’t expecting much of the sandbank but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite enjoyable since the water was pretty shallow. Nafsha really took great care of me, showing me tips for snorkeling and helping me with the snorkeling tube. She was very knowledgeable about the religious practices, cultural traditions, and the marine life in Maldives. She also brought me a delicious coconut while I was staying on the sandbank. Even though I forgot to bring my dry clothing which I packed in my luggage, Nafsha went out of her way to help with my transport back to Malé to ensure that I could catch my flight and onward trip. The highlight of the trip was definitely the surprise spotting of Dolphins on our way back to Hulhumale. It was genuinely a beautiful scene to see! I would definitely recommend the tour if you are untested in doing some offshore activities around Malé.

      Fantastic city walk tour
I did the tour with Archie on April 19, 2024 and it was amazing! Archie was very knowledgeable about the history of Maldives and the landmarks known the Malé island. At no point was I in any rush. Archie really made sure that I had a good amount of time for each site. The tour is ideal for learning about the history, culture, and politics of Maldives if you have like half a day’s time on the Malé island.

The best ever customised & responsible travel of stunning Maldives local islands
My husband and I did a customised tour with Secret Paradise in April, and we could not have asked for anything better! From the moment I contacted Ruth, she took care to understand what we were looking for and created a tour which included a Male city tour, eco island tour of Vilingili, a 3 day stay at Dhigurah and a 2 night stay at a resort of our choice. With each guide we felt like we were catching up with a friend who showed us around. We were taken from airport to hotel with care and conversation. The city tour of landmarks and markets was an explosion of sights, history, architecture, politics, religion, geography and more. The eco island and what Beybe has been able to achieve as a grassroots activist is awe inspiring. And words fail to express how beautiful it was to stay at Dhigurah, walk on the white powder sands, snorkel in crystal clear waters and be able to swim with the majestic whale shark and manta ray. The manta ray tour wasn't even on our itinerary, but our guide organised it when we had a free morning and really wanted to give it a go. It is impressive that nearly every guide we met has also had the opportunity to join marine researchers in their activities and can speak with authority on these gracious creatures, the coral, the environment and much more. I had always wanted to go to Maldives, but wary of being stuck on a resort detached from the local culture and coming back pampered but without any of the exploration and broadened perspective that I really love about travel. I am thankful for the Maldives government opening up local islands to tourists, and for Secret Paradise for creating the possibility of safely and reliably undertaking responsible travel in this fragile and stunningly beautiful ecosystem. Also as an aside - can I just say how very comprehensive their Welcome Pack is and how holistic their pricing is. No hidden speedboat transfer fees or unknown expensive food costs etc. We spent nearly nothing on top of what was quoted to us upfront. This was my most hassle free overseas travel ever, that too in a country with a closed currency.

      Magnificent walk thru Malé
We visited Male from a cruise ship during Ramadan, and so many of the food tours during the day weren't available. We booked the afternoon 4-hour walking tour and learned we could take Iftar with our guide at a local restaurant. Our guide, Ahmed Shaffaf, met us at the Presidential Jetty, where the ships' tender boats landed. Very convenient! Ahmed Shaffaf took us through the nearby markets. His English is excellent, and he was able to explain everything we saw and get us samples of the various products. All the shopkeepers were very friendly and open. We felt very welcome. The markets were clean and well kept—no odor or foul floors. Afterward, Ahmed led us on a 2-mile loop through the city with frequent stops with time to duck into an airconditioned shop from time to time. Along the way, we learned about life in Male and better understood the local culture. The highlight of our tour was the opportunity to share Iftar with many residents. Afterward, it was quite dark, and Ahmed was careful to lead us down the dark seawall sidewalks safely. Ruth, from the Secret Paradise Office, was always prompt in responding to emails. Her company offers various excursions in the Maldives, and I highly recommend using Secret Paradise to plan your entire visit.

      A must-do!
Don’t even think twice and go for it! This is a must-do if you want to look beyond the shiny surface of Maldive’s sandy beaches and resort life to understand more of the local reality and have a glimpse of the island’s daily life. Hamti and Archie, my your guides, were extremely kind, genuine, and knowledgeable - it felt like a walk with two friends. They answered all my questions and gave me interesting perspectives on Maldive’s society, environment, and history. I will definitely take more tours with them in the future. Highly recommended!

The real Maldives & 7 night conservation cruise
Secret Paradise Maldives is one of the best companies we have had the pleasure of using and THE best for those with a conservation interest and minimising carbon footprint. We took part in an 8 day conservation snorkelling live aboard cruise where we were privileged to see a whale shark, dolphins, manta rays, reef sharks and a whole host of other marine life. We took part in conservation activities such as a reef fish count as well as educational workshops ran by our guides and partner organisations. The facilities on board MV Felicity were fantastic and the crew were so friendly and helpful. Delicious food was served up every meal. The guides were simply outstanding and and took great care to ensure a very memorable experience. Secret Paradise also arranged our stay at 2 different local islands either side of the cruise. Ruth (co-founder) could not have been more helpful when it came to narrowing down which islands to visit. All transfers between islands were organised by Secret Paradise which helped facilitate a stress free holiday at all times. I cannot recommend Secret Paradise enough if you are interested in finding out about the real Maldives and supporting their local economy.

I was hesitant to go to the Maldives because i am not a person who likes to go to resorts but more of a traveler who is interested in local culture. Once i found secret paradise i decided that i can experience what i like in the maldives. The communication via email was amazing every question was answered and i asked a lot.

The tour i did was to 5 islands and sleeping on 3 my guide kokko was more like a friend then a guide. I am pretty independent so i felt we had a good balance he travled with me for 7 days and i can WhatsApp him anytime for guidance or to meet. He helped facilitate additional tours for me even a resort visit.

Also the hotels they pick are uniuqe. If u want to see the real Maldives secret paradise is your best option and affordable.

The team at Secret Paradise are passionate about showcasing these incredible islands, and providing genuine local experiences. We picked the 7 night North Ari Island hopping which had a great mix of snorkelling / meeting locals over tea / self exploring local islands and beaches / eating / a bit of artwork on the beach / and hanging out!
Our guides Shark and Nafsha were fantastic, and the organization and communication from Ruth and the office team prior to the trip was top notch. We feel so lucky that we had this experience, and that we selected Secret Paradise to make this happen.
One highlight for us was identifying turtles which we saw snorkelling, and sending the images to the Olive Ridley Project database. We even got to name a turtle!
Following the island hopping we stayed 4 days at Reethi Beach Resort which Ruth had suggested, and it was a great place to stay with a nice beachfront villa, and a wide range of food experiences.
All the transfers to and from the resort were seamless. We hope our future travels include another Secret Paradise experience!

Hi both, Thank you so much for your detailed review, which I will be sure to share with Shark and Nafsha. Delighted that you enjoyed exploring our paradise home, so many highlights, but wonderful that you were able to name a turtle through participating in data collection. Your certificate together with your completed art work will I am sure hold many memories for years to come. We would love to welcome you back in the future and will await that email! Maldives is one of the VTL countries with Singapore hence we planned for a revisit!

I found Secret Paradise Maldives on trip advisor with the great reviews. As usual, as a backpacker myself i normally contact few agents…. Probably 10 different agents this time :)

Ruth was very responsive and helpful right from the beginning. Very adaptive to our plan. We visited private resort on our first trip to Maldives hence this time we decided to visit local islands. There are so many of them to choose from, but thanks god we found Secret Paradise, Ruth introduced us Dhigurah and Dhiffushi! I did my own research and instantly fell in love with both islands!

Ruth was very patient and informative. She shared everything we need to know, especially travel is not easy during this pandemic time, many rules to follow. But everything was well organised and we enjoyed our 10 days holiday to the max! Hassle free!

We sincerely appreciated and thanks Ruth and her teams efforts from the planning stage until the end! I dont even need to worry about anything!

We were also supplied with all the necessary info regarding Covid-19 admin pre-departure. We're grateful for Shaffaf's friendly service and for Ruth's excellent recommendations!

Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding!!! Without ANY reservation, we can wholeheartedly recommend this tour if you are thinking of visiting the Maldives. This was our first trip to the Maldives and we came to celebrate my 35th birthday. In our 21st century age of social media, the Maldives seems to only be known for the resorts and oceanfront villas. While that is a small piece of the equation, and yes we did spend our first night in an ocean villa before starting the tour, there is sooooo much more to see, do and experience. Prior to arriving, our correspondence was with Ruth who is absolutely phenomenal. We are so appreciative of how attentive she was and made sure all of our questions were answered and concerns were addressed. Our tour guide Archie is the best. His quiet, unassuming demeanor was the perfect blend that allowed us to be curious, ask questions and learn as much as we could about the Maldivian culture. It was abundantly clear that Archie takes great pride in his country, and worked very hard to make sure that we had the experience of a lifetime. We can’t say enough good things about our experience and all of the people that we came in contact with. This was the trip and birthday of a lifetime for me!!

This tour was an awesome mix of adventure, cultural insights and loads of fun. Big thanks to Ruth who didn’t tire of our emails back and forth, always super quick to respond to every query and made sure all our requirements were met.

The itinerary was nice and varied and incorporated activities like exploring the stunning islands of Hulhumale, Guraidhoo, Maafushi and Gulhi, informative walking tours and generous time for water activities. The beaches and marine life really are a sight to behold, simply breathtaking. Staying in local properties in some of the less-touristy islands and contributing positively to the community and local economy was a highlight for me.

Kudos to our guide, Shark who was not only an experienced tour leader but also an amazing human being. Shark is passionate about his country and culture and his enthusiasm for promoting local tourism is inspiring. Through his lens as a local, a traveller and an artist we were able to get some cultural, social and political context of the Maldives, and a sense of appreciation for island life beyond the usual perspective from pretty pictures of fancy resorts. It was also a treat to be in the company of someone who loves being in the water as much as we do. His expertise in navigating the islands and keen sense of safety in the water meant that we found ourselves in some of the nicest locations for our snorkelling adventures. Thank you Shark for the positive vibes, great times and belly laughs, we are truly grateful.

As an avid wanderer of our beautiful planet, it is important for me to support local companies who promote Sustainable and Responsible tourism, so it is encouraging to see that Secret Paradise implements community-minded business practices, including providing guests environmental awareness in the protection of the coral reefs and marine ecosystems. I was naturally delighted to have had the opportunity to participate in community-focussed conservation programs such as tree planting and observing the responsible collection and disposal of our plastic wastes throughout the duration of the tour. I am aware that Secret Paradise has other conservation programs and collaboration with NGOs and I just want to say thank you for the great work you guys!

It was an absolute joy to deal with the Secret Paradise team and I would not hesitate to use them again for more beautiful island hopping hopefully in the near future.

Don't even think about anyone else. This wonderful, small, caring outfit owned by Ruth from UK will organise your adventure of a lifetime. You will enjoy the real islands, people, culture, food of the Maldives. Accommodation was traditional yet excellent on every island. I even learned to scuba dive at 65 years old. Whether young, old or in between they will cater for whatever you want. 100% recommendation.

Hi Sandra, Thank you for taking time to write your review on the last day of your holiday! It was great to meet with you during my whistle stop visit to Maafushi whilst you were there. It was also great to hear that you were having a holiday of a lifetime combining island hopping with environmental projects and that Kamey was looking after you as well as keeping you entertained! I was amazed but delighted that you had decided after all to give SCUBA diving a go and I now look forward to hearing you have completed a sky dive at some point during 2018! Thank you for travelling with us. Kind Regards, Ruth

Just got back from our first visit to the Maldives. Me and my husband chose to spend our honeymoon in the Maldives after we found a nice flight offer. I bought the flights and then started researching how we could organize our 2-week trip. I was so overwhelmed by the amount of information and things to do, how to choose activities, resorts and most importantly what to choose that after reading the traveler book bought from FNAC I decided to contact a local agency who could advise us better. I have found the Secret Paradise contact details in the book along with Ruth's name and contacted her via the online form on their website. She replied very quickly proposing different options. We wanted to experience the true Maldivian culture so we chose the South Male Island Hopping Tour for the first week and then Ruth helped us choose a resort for our 2nd week and we chose Olhuveli. We had the two most amazing guides taking care of us UB and Mashir. We bonded straight away, we felt like traveling with old friends and not two guides we have just met 1 day ago :) Everything was perfect: from the local guesthouses to the food, to the people on the different islands, the activities, absolutely everything. It was my first time snorkelling but UB made it a lot easier for me by explaining what I needed to do in detail and even holding my hand for the first 10-15 minutes or so (thanks UB). I must admit I absolutely love snorkelling now and I am not that scared of the water anymore.

I am sure we would not have had the same experience without Ruth and her priceless guidance and the company of both Mashir and UB. Without any hesitation, I would recommend them to anyone wanting to experience the Maldives and have a perfect holiday. Also, I am sure that we will return very soon for part 2. You guys are the best. Thank you for everything.

Dear Ioana, Thank you so much for your review, really pleased you enjoyed both your time with UB and Mash as well as your chill out time on the resort. It was my pleasure to assist you in planning your honeymoon trip and certainly sounds as though you have memories for a lifetime. I know the guys are planning where they should take you on your next visit! We look forward to welcoming you again and you will always be part of our Secret Paradise family. Kind Regards, Ruth

We visited for 10 days in December 2022. Our guide was Shark and he is a knowledgeable and very good guide. We got along famously.

We arrived at the airport in Male on 24 Dec and our first night we booked at the Sun Siyam Olhuveli resort. This was good because after travelling for about 20 hours we were tired. Shark met us at the airport and although our tour with Secret Paradise only started on the 25th we were met by Shark at the airport on arrival. He assisted with meeting the boat to the resort, getting a sim card for connecting and communication via whatsup as well as changing USD to Maldivian Rufiyaa. We took about USD50 per day that we were there and it was sufficient for our needs. Most places it is possible to pay with creditcards, but we always prefer to have local currency also available.

Day 1: On arrival back from the Resort the next afternoon at about 17:00 Shark met us again at the airport and took us to Planktons Beach Hotel in Hlumale. After briefing us we were free to go and have dinner and we made arrangements to meet the next morning.

    Day 2:
We went for a walking tour in Male and Shark showed us some of the local places to do shopping. After lunch we took a 2 hour ferry trip to Guraidhoo were we stayed for 3 nights. We stayed at the Guraidhoo Palm Inn. It is a very basic accomodation. The room had a fridge and aircon. There was no toiletries (soap, shampoo, bodywash). The rooms is not serviced or cleaned daily. Breakfast was served at another guesthouse.
In Guraidoo we met Allie. He and Shark showed us around the island and we had dinner with a local family. It was very nice and the food were great.
That evening we saw the Plankton on the beach. If you walk on it, it turns metallic blue.

Day 3 started with breakfast and then we went snorkeling for the first time at the house reef. This is a way for the guide to check how comfortable you are in the water. Marius and I are used to snorkeling. Shark, I think did not really belief me when I told him I am used to swimming long distances because I am big and just came out of hospital after a major operation. I surprised him when we went snorkeling. We saw a lot of lovely fishes. The rest of the day went to swim at the bikini beach and late afternoon it was time for hedika. What a lovely tradition. Dinner was at a local restaurant.

Day 4 was basically snorkeling and the evening was a bbq dinner on the beach. We saw a big school of dolphins on our way back after snorkeling. We also planted 4 trees as part of the saving the environment project that Secret Paradis is involved in.

Day 5 we transferred to Mafuusi. On arrival we were advised that our accomodation was upgraded. We were supposed to sleep 2 nights in a Guesthouse and then 2 nights in a Delux Ocean View room at the Triton Prestige Hotel. The guesthouse is part of the Triton group. We were however upgraded to a room with a jacuzzi on the 6th floor of the Triton Prestige Hotel for the full 4 days of our stay there. Thank you so much for this. It was really great.

After checking in at the hotel we went snorkeling at 2 different site and had lunch on a sandbank.

Day six (Friday which is equivalent to our sunday, we spent swimming at the bikini beach and at the swimming pool on the 8th floor of the hotel just relaxing.

Day seven we visited the island of Guhli. We saw some beautifal birds and tasted some tried fish. It tasted like biltong and is different than the dried bokkoms that we get here on the West Coast of South Africa. It is just as salty but hard. Lunch was at a guesthouse. We had red snapper fish to share and they also gave us a white snapper to taste. We did some snorkeling and Marius also tried out the jetski. The water was very shallow but we did manage to snorkel and saw a lobster under a corral.

The evening there was a New Years Eve dinner and entertainment on the beach that the hotel arranged. There was also some fireworks. We could see the fireworks also on the nearby islands and resorts.

Day eight we had a day off to do as we wish. The evening we had a dinner on the beach to celebrate my birthday. I even got a cake.

Day nine we transferred back the afternoon to Male airport to return home.

What really impressed us was the following:
    1. Every island we have has a school and hospital. I had to get some eyedrops and the facilities at the hospital in Guraidhoo was top class.
    2. The streets, although it is dirt road, are clean and there is no beggards.
    3. It is peaceful and people seem to mind their own business.
    4. We saw nobody misbehave and I think this is due to the strict policies of not allowing any alcohol on the islands.

In Guiradhoo and Mafuusi there is plenty of shops to buy souvenirs as well as cooldrinks and other snacks. They take USD and local currency. Change is mainly given in local currency at the shops. The restaurants do give change in USD.

Maafuusi is more focused on tourism. I did not like the beach there because it was full of coral in the shallow water. In Guraidhoo and Guhli there was sand on the bottom of water on the beaches.

Weather was perfect. The last 2 days there was a bit of wind blowing. There was not much humidity. It was definitely less than the humidity on the North Coast of Kwazulu Natal here in SA.

Our favorite drink was the fresh fruit juices that is available at all the restaurants. Marius loved the watermelon juice and my favorite was the pineapple juice.

I would really like to thank firstly Ruth for her organising the trip. There was many emails going between us during the planning stages. Secondly for Shark being such a great guide. If possible we would like to return and see more of the Maldive. Especially the more northern islands where Shark comes form and what we heard a lot about. We really enjoyed our trip.

Wow!! Thank you so much for this detailed review. I really appreciate you taking your time to give us your feedback. I am sure this will be really useful for others considering booking an island hopping experience with us. I notice you arrived in the Maldives at the best time. How lucky you arrived in the season for bioluminescent plankton and to be able to celebrate your Birthday AND New Years! As our Welcome Information advises, our multi day guided tours are not designed to be luxury tours although guesthouse upgrades are available upon request. Regardless, it sounds like you had a very fulfilling experience of the Maldives food and culture. I have also shared your kind words with our guide Shark. He wants you to know that it was a pleasure to be in your presence and that he has learned a lot from your down to earth approach to life. He also sends many blessings your way. Thank you again and we hope to welcome you back to Maldives soon! -Ruth
