- ruthfP5969ML0 contributionsBest authentic and arty holiday everIf you want a creative escape in a quaint and authentic little French village with welcoming hosts and one-to-one tuition, then this art retreat is for you. I went with my adult daughter who was able to work remotely while I went sketching outdoors each day and painted in the afternoon. I came away with an experience of a lifetime. Highly recommended.Written November 20, 2024
- rogerhB6341ME0 contributionsWonderful Provençal Village StayMy wife and I stayed at Artelier Provence whilst she undertook a two day workshop with Jean Louis. On our first evening we were invited to join the family for an evening meal which was a lovely opportunity to meet Fiona and Jean Louis and to learn about the long history of the village of Jouques. We were fortunate to be able to stay on site in our own guest accommodation. This had it’s own entrance and consisted of a spacious bedroom with a separate bathroom. Upstairs there was a large, well equipped kitchen and living space with views over the houses oppposite and up the hills. This light and airy space was ideal to relax and prepare meals or just read a book which gave us the opportunity to have a mini experience of living in a small village. Long term free parking is available just 100 metres from Artelier Provence if you are driving yourself, although it is very accessible by public transport from Aix en Provence. The village of Jouques boasts 3 Boulangeries, a small supermarket and cafes and restaurants. There are a number of walks that can be undertaken in the hills above the village and Fiona is extremely happy to offer suggestions and guidance regarding these. All in all this was a wonderful stay in a genuine Provençal village made so much better by warm and generous hosts. It was a truly added bonus to the very exciting painting workshop that my wife had spent two days enjoying.Written October 29, 2024
- Traveler099622187320 contributionsThe highlight of my trip! This was the highlight of my trip to France!! Jean-Louis was friendly, warm, prepared, a fantastic artist and teacher. We had a small group and spent the morning sketching different views, learning shading and picking which we liked best. He gave us advice and would review our work throughout but was never imposing or pressuring. After grabbing a sandwich from a local shop, with Jean-Louis‘ help, we focused on color theory and paint mixing for the final piece. The afternoon was a mix of solo painting time, talking out ideas with him and getting tips. It was incredibly enjoyable, and I couldn’t BELIEVE I made a complete painting by the end!! Seriously amazing. Highly highly recommend!!Written October 23, 2024
- K7626GEanneh0 contributionsA Dream long-held - to enjoy painting classes with an artist in the south of France.'Paint a picture of Provence' - The start of fulfilling a longheld desire. Artelier Provence and artist and highly competent teacher Jean Louis was a wonderful find in our local Western Australian newspaper, but that is another story. My tuition involved learning some essentials of colour theory and enjoying painting, drawing and composition workshops. We spent time sketching in the local environment and also a little further afield in a bucolic rural setting full of peace and productive sketching to be used for the afternoon painting sessions. The opportunity to spend time drawing en-plein-air was particularly valuable and provided the vision and context to create the artwork back in the studio. As an artist, Jean Louis's studio was a visual delight with his own current series of work in progress, completed artworks and a significant collection of books and resource materials to illustrate ideas visually. The village of Jouques is on a local bus route about 45 minutes bus ride from Aix -en-Provence. There is plenty to enjoy in the village and whilst I was busy with art, my husband was able to enjoy the village life. We also enjoyed the hospitality offered by Jean Louis and his wife Fiona and stayed in their accommodation. After a wonderful meal on our first night we were also able to enjoy the local area including over the three days we stayed a matching number of local boulangeries!Written October 18, 2024

With talented artist and teacher Jean-Louis, who shares his creative knowledge and experience with you in a program designed specifically for your artistic level and aspirations. I left with greater confidence in my artistic vision, capabilities and new skills for future paintings. I realized the dream of a lifetime to paint in the lavender fields of Provence. Thanks to Fiona and Jean-Louis for their kind hospitality (especially first aid for my broken ribs) and delightful conversation over afternoon teaWritten June 26, 2024
- Natalia_Catherine0 contributionsThe best art course you will ever take!I spent the day with Jean- Louis working on my sketching and canvas painting skills. I can highly recommend Jean-Louis as an incredibly skilled, patient, talented art instructor who takes his time to explain all the important aspects to mixing paint, principles of sketching and so much more. He adapts to one’s level and his passion and joy for art and teaching is apartment when spending the day with him. It was one of the best art courses I’ve ever done and I felt energised to apply what I learnt in Jocques with Jean-Louis. Just a fantastic experience that immerses you into a world of creativity, learning and fun - at the end of the workshop I went home with a beautiful painting created during the workshop of Jocques which will be a prized memory from my trip to the Provence. 🌹Written September 24, 2023

- lilcorson0 contributionsBeautiful setting and accommodatingI stayed with Jean Louis and Fiona for two days, but I wish it could have been longer! They were both very kind and hospitable, inviting me for meals and showing me around Jouques. Their home and studio is beautiful and well set up. JL was a great teacher and very accommodating, adapting the painting curriculum to work for me. I learned a lot, and would highly recommend this retreat to people of any skill level.Written June 28, 2023
- prueb4680 contributionsJouques - an unspoiled Provencal villageJean and Fiona are great hosts, and while it was such fun playing boules in the village square with them, I was free to come and go from my own entrance into the street above them. Thats how much the village grows up the hillside. Easy half hour bus ride into Aix on Provence, and pretty local walks to keep fit. At the end of a busy day it was nice to relax in my own simply furnished space, using local produce to cook delicious food. The house itself is a work of art in the local style. My husband can't wait to have a holiday here when he is fully retired. I would like to try the art courses, as I feel confident Jean would be patient with a novice such as myself. Fiona filled me in on lots of local information and I must say the absence of a language barrier was a relief.Written June 22, 2022
- ITK_130 contributionsSuch a joyful experience learning art in this paradise of a villiage called JouquesI found the 4-day workshop with Artelier Provence - to my delight - by chance. The six days I spend in the village were a joyful experience. I was the only participant (because of Covid) and felt thoroughly spoiled with attention. Jean-Louis was a skilled and patient teacher as well as a brilliant guide to the village. I was a delight having a bilingual ciceron with personal relationships in the village, who also spoke perfect English. Jouques is such a charming village. Small and friendly and after just under a week it really felt like home. The course itself was well structured and didn’t require too much previous knowledge of painting. Most of all I liked the way we would refer other contemporary artists to discuss techniques and colours and get inspiration. The studio, lodgings and private living areas are all in the same house. It was such a lovely house, ancient, but beautifully renovated. The bedroom was comfortable and the private kitchen well-equipped. There were dozens of books on art and design to be inspired by. I will be back! Perhaps another season (to see the lavender), perhaps another painting medium.Written September 9, 2021
- l_0nied0 contributionsFun in JouquesOur experience with Jean-Louis and Fiona was beyond our expectations. The small village of Jouques is very charming and the setting of the pétanque ground had a great view on the village with the sunset. We had a lot of fun learning and sharing time with the hosts. They also gave us a good recommendation for dinner afterwards. Definitely the highlight of our trip in Provence. Thank you so much again!Written September 19, 2019
- alexcA5723OU0 contributionsGreat little spotOur holiday in Jouques was very successful. Besides the village itself and surroundings, Fiona and Jean-Louis's hospitality and local knowledge helped us make the best of the place. Jean-Louis has a gallery on site that is well worth a visit, with paintings produced using a novel technique that gives lots of texture, with colours that really jump out at you. The village is both authentic and picturesque, and with easy access to Aix en Provence it made for a great week.Written September 18, 2019
- DNaidu0 contributionsOne of the most beautiful and authentic villages in ProvenceSuch a beautiful village and wonderful little reinvigoration of an well oriented house within the old walls. Jean Louis and Fiona are great value and a wealth of knowledge for the region, they are also wonderful hosts. We stayed with them for a few days and also took time to play petanque with them on a few occasions. This was one of the nicest experiences of our time in France. Would recommend to anyone in the region wanting a low key end to the day or another excuse for apero (if, that is, anyone could need an excuse).Written September 16, 2019

A wonderful week in the heart of Provence. It has always been a dream of mine to paint in Provence inspired by the landscapes, light and architecture that has inspired so many of the great Masters. My week staying in Jouques attending the Artelier Provence Oil Encaustic workshop allowed me to fulfil my dream.
Jean Louis is an amazing teacher, so patient and insightful on all aspects of painting and drawing. His wife, Fiona is lovely. Both welcome guests openly into their beautiful Provence village home, which is spacious, comfortable and well located within an authentic and beautiful Provence village. I would highly recommend adding this art course to your itinerary if your travels take you to France. You won’t be disappointed. Suitable for anyone who loves art, or who wants to be inspired for future art projects. A truly immersive , educational and joyous experience. I feel privileged to have had the experience.

Wow! What a super day of art, learning and fun it was with Jean-Louis. He is an incredible teacher (having taught for many years) - patient, kind, encouraging, incredibly knowledgable and a talented artist himself. We started by doing different sketches around the village in the morning. It was wonderful to be outside and also see the village which was quiet and beautiful and is very historic. In the afternoon we returned to the studio to choose which sketch to focus on painting, and then the painting began! I decided I wanted to go non traditional/Fauvist as I love color and Jean Louis was right there with me and guided me expertly all the way. He was so generous with his knowledge , time and teaching. This is quite an intense day (in a good way) as you are one on one for so long in a creative space, and there can be emotions and frustrations (only from me lol) but he manages this expertly and I felt fully supported in every moment of the experience and so appreciated him as a collaborator and teacher. At the end of the day I had learned so much, had such a good time and LOVE LOVE my painting! JL’s wife Fiona is delightful and provides hospitality and support throughout the day which was also most appreciated. All in all this was a fantastic addition to my Provencal holiday and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic art experience. I consider myself an enthusiastic beginner but JL’s teaching skills and considerable talent would lend themselves to anyone at any level of artistic experience.

With a huge experience in art techniques and painters of importance and knowledge of the area Jean-Louis will male your art experience an excellent way to spend your day.
On our 1-day art journey we have discovered a beautiful village, a million ways to make shadows work, use of color and many many more things. Our family of 6 had a wonderful time. Even though there were many levels of experience, motivation and ages!

I had a day long workshop with Jean-Louis where we focused on drawing several different scenes including a landscape and floral in the morning and painting one of my choice in the afternoon. J-L covered a lot of information, had handouts I could take notes on, was encouraging and had useful constructive comments. He provided a variety of watercolor materials including paints, markers, inks, paper, brushes etcetera. He was friendly and hospitable. The location in Jouques is absolutely lovely. We talked about other art mediums as well. He invited me to lunch with him and we enjoyed talking about a broad range of topics. I am from the United States and one of the reasons I chose his workshop is that he speaks English. I highly recommend taking a workshop from him.

Artelier Provence and the beautiful village of jouques. Two days spent in jouques felt like a week. Thank you Jean-Louis and Fiona for making me feel at home . They both went above and beyond , and the experience felt like more than a workshop which made it truly remarkable .
As a beginner, I had doubts and fears prior to to the workshop . JL has provided a positive learning experience in a non judgmental environment . He made constructive feedback which was conducive to my successful learning . I learned that painting is a balance between working freely and loosely, and having structure and patience to allow a painting to develop.
This definitely won’t be the last, JL and F , À la prochaine!!

In August, 2022 I had the pleasure of attending my long awaited art retreat at Artelier Provence and spend time in an authentic Provence village! I stayed with the artist and his wife in the village of Jouques near Aix En Provence and it was incredible. They welcomed me into their lives, made a special meal for me, took me on long hikes to see the countryside, taught me the game of Petanque, shared the local history and culture with me and took me on art walks where we photographed and sketched the scenery. I’m grateful beyond measure! The artist, Jean-Louis Diaz, who works with cold wax and oil paints, taught me some of his techniques. He's amazingly talented and I learned a lot!

I recently completed the four day retreat which surpassed all of my expectations. Jean-Louis is not only a phenomenal artist but he is a gifted teacher as well and individualized each day to my own painting style, skills and goals. Everything was also so well tailored to the local setting where we could draw and paint breathtaking scenes just minutes from the studio. Jean-Louis and Fiona were incredibly thoughtful hosts and helped me round out my experience with pétanque, local restaurants, classic French films and surprises like a quick visit to a lavender distillery and a goat farm. The town of Jouques is beautiful and it felt like a once in a lifetime experience except that I definitely plan to return! The home/lodgings were also extremely comfortable, private and historic (centuries old and so beautiful). I would highly recommend!

Right from the start, you‘ll be welcomed into the studio/home by Jean-Louis and his wife, Fiona. Jean-Louis (born French) was a fine arts teacher in Australia and his wife, Fiona, was a graphic designer. Jean-Louis is a very talented painter and his artwork graces the walls of his studio. Now in their retirement, they have started a business in Provence where he teaches art classes from his art studio/home.
To begin, Jean-Louis went through best practice composition rules in the studio. We took a 5-10 minute walk down to the river, where we sat and picked a view to sketch (en plein air). Jean-Louis had us do some timed exercises so we didn’t overthink how to initially sketch our composition and then layered in detail over time. We spent about an hour sketching, picked up lunch at a local bakery, and went back to their studio.
We took an hour break for lunch (they have an extra kitchen for guests to eat) and then regrouped in the studio to start our acrylic painting. We learned to mix a color scheme from using only 6 colors. We all agreed to paint in the impressionistic style, using Cezanne’s work as a reference. We worked on our paintings all afternoon with Jean-Louis’s guidance and help. It was so relaxing and rewarding and we love our final paintings. We will return home with beautiful keepsakes to remember the day and Provence.
Jean-Louis explained everything before we started and was with us the entire time in case we had any questions. I was never a fan of acrylics, but he has given me a renewed interest in them. He wove art history and techniques into the lesson. He showed us how to mix the colors correctly to get the tints and shades we want, how to create a color chart for the current piece, and also experimenting with color combinations for future pieces. He explained why we should not use black, how to keep your brushes clean and proper care, why one does simple sketching outdoors and proper technique to set up a composition before beginning painting. I have taken many an art class and Jean-Louis taught me so much in one day. I have also not been one to work en plein air, but I now have newfound skills that I will take with me on future outdoor paintings.
Even if you have taken art classes before, the area surrounding his studio is a beautiful area to translate to painting. We highly recommend you visit them and enjoy a day in Jouques, France.

Dear Adam + Shara, Fiona and I wanted to say a big thank you for your great review - it's so satisfying for us to know you guys had a very positive experience doing our one-day art workshop. Yes, it was a lot of information to absorb in one day, but you both nailed it and produced exceptional paintings - truly lasting mementos of a fabulous vacation in Provence. The four day/5 night art retreat exceeded my expectations. The one-to-one teaching from Jean-Louis was informative, at times challenging but always confirming. As the days progress, you build your confidence, ending in my case, producing work that I wouldn’t have thought possible at the start. The accommodation is perfect Provence. Jouques is a lovely hidden gem of a village. Fiona is an exceptional host and conversationalist. They make you feel very welcome. I highly recommend the experience.
