About
Picking up at Arras railway station or your hotel, the Somme day tour visits the momentous locations of the War's most infamous campaign, from the disasters of the 1st july 1916 to the attrition of the autumn. You will visit the must see sights, trenches, mine craters, learn about the weapons, communications and mining. In the morning we concentrate on the 1918 battles around Amiens and includes a visit to the Australian Memorial to the Missing at Villers Bretonneux and The Sir John Monash Centre. If you have a relative or a particular interest we can build that into your itinerary, using the latest GPS software you will literally walk in the footsteps of heros.

Visiting the battlefield of the Somme with Rod and Jackie was an amazing, respectful and insightful experience. They both drew on decades of personal military experience and police experience (both had long careers in both services) colouring in the experiences with personal reflections and lessons.
They were able to walk me through some of the battlefields, step by step, in as much detail as I wanted (which was a lot) their memory of the overall history down to the minutia of individual stories was impressive. They were also able to focus on Australian and South African history specifically which was an area of interest for me. Thank you for an amazing journey.

Jackie delivered an informative interesting experience, whilst the trip had an itinerary Jackie talked us through options and we picked where we went.

Sir John Montash monument and visitor centre was excellent and brought it all to life underlining the other monuments and visitor centres we went to.

we stopped for beverages and later lunch during the day

Spent two days with Jackie around Arras and the Somme. Wonderful organisation led to a fantastic trip with lifetime memories. There are so many options to choose from so going through a specialist company who can tailor your visit is essential. You won’t find better than this. Already planning the next visit.

What a remarkable tour this is! Our guide, Jackie was the perfect, friendly host. She provided all the background information to help us get the most out of the day and was able to answer all of our many questions. We were particularly grateful to be given so much time and space to reflect and to soak everything in - so important on such a journey. I will never forget this moving experience. Don't miss this! Thank you Jackie for the most amazing day.

Hands down the BEST tour I have ever taken! An absolutely FANTASTIC day!! I’ve lived and travelled all over the globe (North America; Caribbean Europe; Africa; Middle East) and I can honestly say “The Battle of the Somme Guided Day Tour from Arras” was by far the best experience I have ever had. My guide for the day (Jackie) was a star! Knowledgeable; interesting; engaging; personable; Jackie demonstrated a genuine passion for the subject matter. Thank you for an unforgettably amazing day.

Wow Carey, thank you. It was great to get back in the saddle and see how the tour worked with the COVID 19 restrictions, so having a vehicle large enough that you can sit a good distance behind the driver yet with the PA system still hear everything, and using our hand sanitiser everytime you re enter the vehicle keeps everyone safe-the outdoor nature of these tours means it has got to be one of the safest ways to see the battlefields. All our tours are private now so we were pleased to be able to adjust the itinerary to take in your Canadian heritage. Have a great time in the UK.

I must thank Rod for our private Battlefield tour of Arras and surrounds on December 17th. It was very moving to see the places that my Grandfather was when he was enlisted in The British Troops, Norfolk Regiment in WWI. Rod had such an extensive knowledge of the war history of the area and we were very grateful that he suggested we see the Wellington Caves under Arras also. Thank you Rod and Jackie for the detailed planning of our special day.

I am well read on the First World War and this tour showed me how little I really knew. Rod delivered this tour professionally and very well catering for both me and my wife who had not read about this part of our Australian history. This was exceptional to cater for both our very diverse needs, well done Rod!Rod is English and to our real joy we felt he knew about the Australians in these sectors of the war. As mentioned we expected a lot and were delivered much much more. I would strongly recommend this tour to Australians and other nationalities

Thank you for your review- Rod is used to keeping the wife happy!! I have trained him well over the last 31 years! Seriously though, we like to give our clients the bigger picture, then we focus onto the sites of action for their Nationality and then the individual stories that come out of those battles- including any relatives they might have. We work with a lot of Australians and have visited Australia a couple of times now researching Military History.

I booked a Tour of the Somme and was not disappointed with my choice. Jackie the Tour guide was very knowledgable and we covered a lot of the main sites. Also they were very accommodating in that i wanted to visit the Memorial of The soldier comforting his Wounded Horse at Chipilly which they were able to do.. Having done this tour i will definitely be coming back to the area and will be booking another tour with Battlefield Experience.. I can highly recommend this company.

Thank you for your review- we always try to accommodate personal requests where practicable- it is a lovely memorial and I know the whole group appreciated the quick detour! It is great to get out of the main cities and see a bit of real rural France- we are so blessed to live here.
