Great venue but poor customer service
The woman at the desk on 14/04/24 was rude and unhelpful. Kept interrupting us when we were trying to explain the problem with the ticket. We had a booking reference but didn’t have a barcode so she dismissed us from the line. Our email said to collect the ticket from the desk. I walked around asking for help. I tried to access the Wi-Fi. I felt very frustrated and close to tears. In the end we went back to the desk- she said “Oh your ticket is with the audio guide around the corner. You should’ve said from the start”!!!! 🤬🤬🤬 It was written on the booking reference!! We wasted time unable to get in because the woman at the desk wouldn’t listen.

          Not happy with Naples, Italy
We had tickets booked to tour Herculaneum for Apr 12, 2024. We walked to the Metro station only to find out the Metro was on strike. I contacted the Herculaneum ticket vendor only to find out that cancellation or date change needs to be done 24hrs in advance. I am 42€ ($62 Cdn) out of pocket. No refund!!! No possible date change!!! We could have taken a taxi for another 65€ charge... not happening! Our impression of Naples... dirty, stinky, unfriendly, rude people. Not a city we will revisit... ever!

Must do when in Naples or Pompeii area
Easy hike and very rewarding, enjoyed this more than the ruins, go early in the day though, back at the parking area the crowds were growing by the minute. And don’t waste your money on guided tours, simple to do on your own

          Very Interesting Site
From the station is a nice 10min walk to the ruins. The views from the entry point are very good. It is a much easier walk than Pompeii but without so many wow moments. We arrived for 9.30am and it was empty but the nice thing was plenty of staff walking around and answered a few questions I had (found the staff to be multi-lingual in Italian and English at the least). Absolutely worth going and good value for money and a must if you dont have time for Pompeii

          Worthwhile but poor infrastructre
The place is very interesting, no question. And now in February very empty which makes visiting so much nicer. There is WiFi so you can download a guide to your phone which is available in many languages. Problem is, that is only to easy to overlook the small stand at the entrance. The information about the WiFi and password is written in tiny letters. There is only space for one person at a time to do so. As the WiFi is slow, it takes some time. What stops them to make that more accessible? Already with small crowds it is not functional anymore. Why they are not able to provide clean and decent toilets is beyond me. That's why only three stars.

Good but no a patch on Historic Pompeii
If you have limited days do Historic Pompeii. With parking costs, entry and actually having to pay for the guide map same price as Pompeii which is in another league. It is interesting as this was covered in lava mud and Pompeii was ash. You can see the height from which it was dug out. It was a seaside retreat for the wealthy from Pompei. Worth a visit but pricey compared with massively superior Historic Pompeii

Better, cheaper and less crowded than Pompeii!
Amazing that I can’t even write a review without going through a dozen TripAdvisor ads for tours here. Yes, I know it’s how they make money. So, first off this place is amazing. Everything Pompeii has but fewer crowds, better preserved ruins, and less expensive. And regarding my initial rants you certainly don’t need to pay a lot of money for a guided tour. Getting there from Naples is cheap (about $6/person round trip), fast (about 30 minutes) and easy. Allow a half day and go early before it gets hot.

          Napoli Train Travel
Beware, we bought a train ticket in Naples for the Circumvesuviana train for Herculaneum, it does not always stop there and we found ourselves in Pompeii. We did use it for Sorrento. Please note from Garibaldi Station in Naples this train is very busy. To get to Herculaneum we caught the train at Napoli Porta Nolana which is less than 5 minutes walk from Garibaldi. The trains run on time and are very reasonable priced.

          It's better than Pompeii
Man, I'm so glad I went here instead of Pompeii. This place was nearly empty and yet, it has SO much to offer. Much smaller in size and therefore, easier to visit all. Beautiful ruins everywhere and a trip here is worth a million history lessons.

          Much much better than Pompeii
If your time is short, go to Herculaneum rather than Pompeii. This is smaller but has far more to show, so much better than Pompeii. Because it covers s smaller area, its easier to see more of the ruins and the ruins appear to be in far better condition than those in Pompeii. It wasnt as commerical as Pompeii which was a relief and you felt you could relate to those that lived and died there.

          Educational few hours
Amazing place, better than Pompeii despite being smaller. Not ideal for those with mobility issues due to cobbled areas, high kerbs etc but there is still some stuff (small museum) inside the gates that could be accessed. We self drove and parked in a nearby carpark at €3 per hour. Spent about 3hrs round the grounds.

          Old history lesson
Great history to be seen here. You do have to spend the time to walk through most doorways, etc, as you never know where you might come across an old wall painting, etc. Uneven ground and hilly so be prepared for lots of walking. The day we visited was a public holiday so there were long iines of people. Not sure what it is like on a normal day.

A lot more compact than Pompeii
This place is amazing! Our ticket included the audioguide which was a good way to find out about the ruins. We spend about 2.5 hours investigation the ruins. Since my last visit they've removed the walkways in front of the boat sheds which was a little disappointing. Covid requirements meant we had to queue to enter a few of the houses but it wasn't a long wait. These ruins are so much better preserved than Pompeii. Go!

          Roman Herculaneum
Herculaneum is Pompeii’s much smaller neighbour- but no worse for that. Frozen in time since the volcanic eruption of AD79, which buried the town in ash, it is amazing being able to walk down Roman streets and to wander into villas, bath houses ,shops etc . Most of the buildings are in a remarkable state of preservation., with mosaic floors and painted frescoes on the walls .You really feel that you have travelled back in time. In some of the houses you actually walk around upon the ancient mosaics which are around 2000 years old . It’s a 10 minute walk to the Archaeological Park entrance from the railway station, which is on the Naples to Sorrento line. One matter to note - one you enter the Archaeological Park there is nowhere to buy a drink - since you can easily spend several hours exploring the site you may well want to take one in with you . Be aware also that many of the artifacts found in the buildings during excavation are now housed in the Naples Archaeological Museum (MANN) a place which is also well worth a visit.
