About
The museum is located in a medieval building, which encompasses the remains of a 15th century synagogue, which was right in the centre of the Jewish district in Lecce. Visitors to the museum can see the pools that were once used for ritual bathing (mikwa'ot), the doorpost groove that housed the sacred parchment with religious verses from the Scriptures (mezuzah), as well as significant remains of the church that partially incorporated the earlier synagogue. Visitors are invited to follow the threads linking the Jewish presence in Lecce and Salento from the Middle Ages up to the present day.

A must stop when you visit Lecce!
Whilst visiting the Basilica Do Santa Croce we found Museo Ebraico, The Jewish Museum. We took the 20 minute guided tour for 9 euro each and learnt and incredible amount of history about the Jewish people in Lecce from the 1400s to post World War 2. Claudia was an incredible and well researched guide and answered our many questions. The aretfacts, videos and AI within the mueseum take you back to a time that cannot be seen in the walls today, and very kindly, Clauda walked us around the surrounding area so that we could feel the space and build connections to what we saw in the video. A must stop when you visit Lecce!

      Well worth a visit!
Small but terrific, very moving museum (and optional walking tour) that gives you a good sense of the rich history of long-gone Jewish Lecce. Our guide, Martina, was a delight and really knew her history. Worth a visit and lending your support as the Museum seeks to expand its work and collections.

A moving glimpse into Lecce’s Jewish past
A very moving experience. A small but impactful museum made possible by the efforts of local and visiting families. A glimpse into the forgotten history of the Jews of Lecce and Salento. Well worth the visit.

Great introduction to Jewish life in the Salento
The other reviewers have captured much of what makes a visit to this museum so worthwhile. We would add only two things. The museum provides some information about a little known effort by communities in the far south of Salento to provide temporary housing for Jewish refugees after World War II, who were waiting to find other homes. The generosity of the residents of Leuca, for example, was extraordinary given all that they themselves had been through. The second piece is the story of how the museum got started with the inspration and dedicatin of a few individuals. You can learn more about that story by visiting the museum.

      Slice of history
Our bike tour, Undiscovered Puglia, ended here in Lecce. The museum gave a interesting look at the regional Jewish history.

A must if you care about Jewish history in Italy
We went to the English tour of this unique museum and were amazed at what we learned about the Jewish history in Italy. A big thank you to the family that provided the funding to tell the story and curate the exhibits. I am sure most people pass this museum by. Do Not! worth every bit of the 9 euros and 30 minutes.

      The Jewish quarter of Lecce
The tour was so interesting. I learned many new things and really enjoyed seeing the actual places in Lecce where the synagogue, the Jewish market, and the Jewish neighborhood had been. Marta was a knowledgeable guide who cares deeply about our history. I highly recommend going to this museum!!

      Overpriced
Reducing prices to make this experience more accessible. €38 per person for a guided tour around the tiny Jewish quarter is daylight robbery and means that pensioners like me have no chance to visit other than googling for info before visiting. The museum itself costs €9 per person for a tour, one cannot simply wander around at one's own speed. This too is super expensive if you consider that that many of the world's great museums are free! Very disappointing. But of course if you have €100k you can become a platinum supporter. I think this museum needs to review its raison d'etre.

      Interesting
Not much in the way of artefacts from Lecce's ancient jewish community. However the photographic exhibition of the displacement persons camps in Southern Italy was interesting.A guided tour was really not necessary, but I guess they have to warrant the 9 euro charge for entry. A mezuzah niche on a doorway, and the sight of what may have been a mikveh was shown to us. Worth a visit though to support them

      Great Rainy Morning Activity
My wife and I have been in Europe for over 45 days this year (3 different trips) and this was only the second day when we got rained out. We saw this museum and decided to check it out. We are not Jewish and had no particular “draw” to the museum…but we left feeling more aware of the history of Lecce and of the Jews in the area. You have a choice of a 20 minute guided tour or two longer ones; we did the 20 minute tour. At the end of the the tour the guide told us we could go back into the museum (we had been escorted next door to a small art gallery) and look at the info boards and such if we wanted. Of the 13 people in the group, many of whom were Jews, we were the only 2 who went back in. Apparently this is common since the staff told us we had to pay and do the tour first; when we explained that we had she apologized and let us continue. The info boards were very informative and gave us a good understanding of the history of the Jewish presence in Lecce in historic times. This led us to do some afternoon web-searching to fill in the gaps. At €9 each this was a bit more than we have paid in other city museums but we felt it was good value for the money.

      A reminder of things past
There isn't now a Jewish community in Lecce but there used to be until it was expelled in the 16th century. At the end of WWII, it was a station for the survivors of the holocaust. A good reminder.

Interesting display and tour of Puglia Jewish Community
A tour is required at this museum but afterwards, visitors can spend more time looking at the exhibits which focus on the Community during World War II and after when many tried to leave for Israel. Italians were oftentimes helpful in getting survivors of the War, to Israel. Earlier in the history, many Jews were successful merchants.

      A great small Jewish museum
We visited the museum and went on a short tour. It was nine dollars per person including the tour. It was a wonderful museum and I’m very glad we found it. Thank you to the people who set it up it is a Good thing for Lecce and for visitors.

A surprise Gem in Lecce ! Thank you
Yes the baroque church or the Sacred Cross is beautiful but so are so many others in Italy and Europe so….the surprise came with the discovery of its reason of being built there. The once prosperous Jewish community of Puglia region was, with the kind help if Isabel (the one from the inquisition) and her great-grand child Charles the 5th methodically erased. Thank you Marta for the guided tour of the Jewish quarter. If we come back to Lecce is only to do the longer tour!

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy last year. OK, I am a lover of museums but this one was really special. We had an excellent guide who told us the fascinating history of the Jewish community in Lecce through their collection - it’s small but perfectly formed! (We actually visited in March 2019 - but that wasn’t an option in the drop down menu.)

A museum telling the fascinating story of Jewish life in Salento before they were forced to leave or convert in the 1500's. The museum is put together well and gives much background about the subject but also about much broader themes, such as the influence of the Jewish presence on Salento and Italian society. A host of other activities which they organize, such as concerts and theater pieces make this place really worth a visit. The staff is extremely friendly and dedicated. A must-see for visitors to Salento.

The Jewish Museum of Lecce is a hidden gem and should not be missed. I emailed ahead of time to verify when a tour in English would be available. Claudia responded immediately and gave me all the pertinent information. We arrived on our day and time and were greeted by Marta as we entered the museum. Although the museum space seems small, it had an amazing amount of well documented and well presented historical information about Jewish life in Lecce dating back to the 15th century. Marta explained about the Jewish community, its rituals, and showed us excavated remains of the original synagogue structure. We went outside to see the recently added plaque on the outside of the building, the niche which once held a mezuzah and then took us a few doors away which had a modern exhibit by an Israeli artist. The most compelling part of the tour was watching the video/movie documenting the survivors of the Holocaust who were in Displaced Persons camps in Italy as they rebuilt their lives - many immigrating to Israel.

My husband & I noticed the sign for the museum after visiting the famous Basilica. Intrigued, we walked in & soon signed up for the hour long tour that goes through the museum & nearby streets. Our tour guide Marta was passionate about the subject & shared a lot of history (from Roman times to WWII) that we simply didn’t know. Highly recommend for a different slice of Lecce / Salento history.

Our guide Marta was very knowledgeable and she communicated to us the goals and the significance of the museum. This was an excellent tour of the museum which documented the community of Jewish people, and the Constantly changing government policy over many historical periods. The pictures often told about the experiences of individuals during World War II and after when many who survived tried to go to Israel over British objections. Stories often revealed the assistance that the survivors had received from Italian people who cared for them in refugee camps and helped to find transportation to Israel.

Today I visited the Jewish Museum in Lecce, Museo Ebraico. We took the 20 minute private tour for 9 euro each and were shown around the museum and given a great history of the Jewish people in Lecce from the 1400s, to post World War 2. We also saw the mikveh and were given tips and places to visit around the city. Thank you so Claudia - this a must visit on your journey to Lecce!

Very overpriced. Information quite superficial and really I think aimed at schoolchildren. 13 minutes of private tour (30 minutes for 25 euros per person) was a video reconstruction of what the Jewish quarter might have been like. Then a rather schmatzly account of the displaced Jewish community after the war making babies in Lecce. No account of how Italy had contributed to the events of WW2. This part of Italy is not exactly diverse and it is not only the Jewish community who are absent so it would have been interesting to hear a broader account of multiculturalism in Southern Italy. I’d avoid and go to the Synagogue in Marrakesh or Venice instead. A fair entrance fee would be 5 euros.

Six of us toured the museum after being told that there was little Jewish history in Lecce. Claudia, our passionate and excellent guide made it clear this is untrue. The museum was well worth the visit to see the influence of Jews in the area.
