About
The site on which the Jewish Museum of Lecce stands is the fulcrum of the ancient Jewish quarter, as there was the fifteenth-century synagogue. Today its undergrounds are part of a historical itinerary accessible by the visitor. During the visit we observe the tanks used for ritual ablutions (mikwa’ot), the door jamb space in which a mezuzah was housed and the remains of the ecclesiastical building whose perimeter is substantially the same as the pre-existing synagogue. Available languages: Italian, English, French, Spanish.

The Jewish Museum in Lecce (Palazzo Taurino) was highly recommended to me by a local, and I am so glad she did. I took a group of 8 Americans and we spent the better part of a day there and found it to be a moving, well-curated experience. Art of all kinds, textiles, documents, photographs, all tell the story of the Jewish population and traditions in the Salento region from Medieval times.I highly recommend it.

This was an excellent tour of the museum which documented the community of Jewish people, and the Constantly changing government policy over many historical periods. The pictures often told about the experiences of individuals during World War II and after when many who survived tried to go to Israel over British objections. Stories often revealed the assistance that the survivors had received from Italian people who cared for them in refugee camps and helped to find transportation to Israel.

The Jewish Museum of Lecce is a hidden gem and should not be missed. I emailed ahead of time to verify when a tour in English would be available. Claudia responded immediately and gave me all the pertinent information. We arrived on our day and time and were greeted by Marta as we entered the museum. Although the museum space seems small, it had an amazing amount of well documented and well presented historical information about Jewish life in Lecce dating back to the 15th century. Marta explained about the Jewish community, its rituals, and showed us excavated remains of the original synagogue structure. We went outside to see the recently added plaque on the outside of the building, the niche which once held a mezuzah and then took us a few doors away which had a modern exhibit by an Israeli artist. The most compelling part of the tour was watching the video/movie documenting the survivors of the Holocaust who were in Displaced Persons camps in Italy as they rebuilt their lives - many immigrating to Israel.

We stumbled upon this museum randomly and so so glad we did! We only paid €5 for an amazingly insightful and in depth tour (in which it was just the two of us!) with Marta. Her English was exceptional and she described the history and information in such detail! We were even more impressed when we heard her break into fluent French with the couple after us- very talented!! The museum is set out well and includes so much important history that is largely unknown. Salento has a rich Jewish history and this museum really does it justice! Amazing experience- thank you Marta!

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy last year. OK, I am a lover of museums but this one was really special. We had an excellent guide who told us the fascinating history of the Jewish community in Lecce through their collection - it’s small but perfectly formed! (We actually visited in March 2019 - but that wasn’t an option in the drop down menu.)

A museum telling the fascinating story of Jewish life in Salento before they were forced to leave or convert in the 1500's. The museum is put together well and gives much background about the subject but also about much broader themes, such as the influence of the Jewish presence on Salento and Italian society. A host of other activities which they organize, such as concerts and theater pieces make this place really worth a visit. The staff is extremely friendly and dedicated. A must-see for visitors to Salento.

Lovely small museum outlining the interesting and little-known history of the Jewish community in Puglia. Well worth a visit. English version of book on Jewish Salento is published very soon.

Fascinating experience. I think the guided tour is compulsory - take it, it was enthralling,. This was a.real surprise, and a contrast to all the mainstream baroque churches with their conventional interpretation/ticketing/crowds.
