    • The Maldives is a Muslim country and care needs to be taken in relation to the dress code on local islands. Whilst it is acceptable for men to wear T-Shirts and shorts or swim shorts; females should avoid causing offense by maintaining a more conservative approach to clothes by wearing T-Shirts, loose shorts or sarongs. Whilst the islands we visit are more tolerant of guests wearing traditional beachwear, females should avoid wearing bikinis and swimwear unless on an uninhabited island, picnic island, sandbank, screened off tourist beach, dive boat or resort island
    • We do provide snorkeling equipment on all our tours but please feel free to bring along your own mask and snorkel. How do the locals live?
It was interesting to get a feeling of how people live in this city. We were also given historical information as well as religious history of the locals. We also visited the vegetable market and fish market. The tuna were huge. We had a wonderful time and this tour could have been longer.

You will not regret booking this excursion!!!!!!!!!
On the Male' city tour, you will get a great walking tour with a lot of history. There is a good mix of historical and modern Male' with a friendly and knowledgeable guide who loves the city and country. I don't remember his name, but he was a great tour guide. The park was great, and the houses were beautiful!! Very strongly recommended!

Support local, more sustainable travel w Secret Paradise
So glad we found Secret Paradise. We booked with them to plan a few days before we embarked on a surf trip and they made the whole experience seamless. This included airport pick up, transfer and tour on Gulhi, Mafuushi tour, meeting Save the Beach outside Male. UB, our guide, was super knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Accommodations were fine. Appreciate their efforts to support local guesthouses and also to encourage more sustainable travel, including understanding and offsetting the carbon of travel. Highly recommend- whether for your full stay or as an add on so you can get a much better sense of real life in the Maldives!

Highly recommended this fascinating full day walking tour, especially if you like to learn.
Secret Paradise provided two great days on a recent round the world cruise, with 29 ports where I and friends (up to 46 of us) did tours with local operators. In each port I read scores of reviews, to find the best tour operator, and Secret Paradise was easily the one in Malé, Maldives. But BOOK EARLY as they are so good, they fill up. I was happy to be the beneficiary of a cancellation, which allowed us to do their 3 Point Snorkeling Tour, as well as their Full Day Walking Tour. We were three on the walking tour, and two on the snorkeling tour, with Ub, our excellent guide, leading both tours. He's been with Secret Paradise eight years, and we were happy to have him, learning heaps about Muslim culture and life in Male. Especially impressive was his handling of calls to prayer, and our being there during Ramadan. The fish market was super, great to be there with a guide, it felt we were less of an intrusive force with a local showing us around, and thankfully able to explain things, identify fish, answer our questions. Kudos to Ruth and her team, a quality operation. She was a pleasure to work with in planning and communication. And a special thanks for keeping their group sizes small, with a focus on the environment. I much look forward to returning in the future, when I and my group will do their Full Day North Malé Island Hopping with Ruth & Mash.

A great day of snorkeling in Male thanks to the quality operation of Secret Paradise.
Secret Paradise provided two great days on a recent round the world cruise, with 29 ports where I and friends (up to 46 of us) did tours with local operators. In each port I read scores of reviews, to find the best tour operator, and Secret Paradise was easily the one in Male, Maldives. But BOOK EARLY as they are so good, they fill up. I was happy to be the beneficiary of a cancellation, which allowed us to do their 3 Point Snorkeling Tour, as well as their Full Day Walking Tour. We were a group of two on their 3 Point Snorkeling tour, and three on their Full Day walking tour, with Ub, our excellent guide, leading both tours. He's been with Secret Paradise eight years, and we were happy to have him. On the day I saw 9 black tipped reef sharks, one within three meters, many many unicorn fish - similar to a pencil above their forehead, and a favorite were the Indian Ocean oriental sweetlips ... horizontally zebra striped in black and white ... with the front, tail, and fins, all bright yellow with black polka dots. At the second spot, there were a few cold places in the water, soon followed by overly hot cells. UB explained this as upwelling, which brings nutrient and food, the lifeblood of the reef. The best views were just before we got out at the last stop, around desalination intake tubes. Thousands of fish were seen on the day. A mini school of small brown fish, perhaps eight centimeters, came together, then were fast away, dispersed in a flash.

Excellent custom made itinerary and service for a budget trip
We had booked our flights and were looking for an appropriate trip. Considering the vast options from being very remote to island bustle as well as the „unusual“ means of mobility I felt overwhelmed and super relieved when I was referred to Ruth for our budget trip plans. She helped us decide on a suitable itinerary and booked accordingly. Everything from pick-up at the airport, acommodations, transfers was covered. Upon airport arrival we met our guide, who made sure we get onto the right boat and helped us with things like purchasing SIM cards and the like. The guide was giving us interesting cultural information too and was answering all our questions. She was available for any questions during our trip via whatsapp and shared confirmed transfer dates each prior evening. All the patience (in finding the best itinerary) and the service throughout was impeccable. While writing this, worth to mention that we did a budget trip to remote local islands and no 5-star resorts. However we felt treated also from the guesthouses like 5-star guests, while getting a glimpse at local life which was one of our trip goals. All the guesthouses Ruth works with have been audited by herself and she is well known to each of the guesthouse owners. Overall it felt great to tap into her network and be known as one of her customers. Needless to say, if I had booked transfers and acommodations myself, I couldn‘t even match the price she was quoting. For any future trip to Maldives, no matter what kind, I will always book throught Ruth and highly recommend her agency services.

Great North Ari local island hopping experience!
The team at Secret Paradise are passionate about showcasing these incredible islands, and providing genuine local experiences. We picked the 7 night North Ari Island hopping which had a great mix of snorkelling / meeting locals over tea / self exploring local islands and beaches / eating / a bit of artwork on the beach / and hanging out! Our guides Shark and Nafsha were fantastic, and the organization and communication from Ruth and the office team prior to the trip was top notch. We feel so lucky that we had this experience, and that we selected Secret Paradise to make this happen. One highlight for us was identifying turtles which we saw snorkelling, and sending the images to the Olive Ridley Project database. We even got to name a turtle! Following the island hopping we stayed 4 days at Reethi Beach Resort which Ruth had suggested, and it was a great place to stay with a nice beachfront villa, and a wide range of food experiences. All the transfers to and from the resort were seamless. We hope our future travels include another Secret Paradise experience!

      A fabulous Maldives trip
Maldives trip was really an amazing on. Hulhumale, Male were so good. Shopping was quite expensive. But the real fun was the resort island Medufushi.

Terrific walking tour of Male', highly recommend it
This was a really informative and educational tour of Male' by guide Ahmed Shaffaf that covered a lot in four hours - from taste-testing at the local farmers and fish markets (spotting stingrays), political history, religious history, history of local currency, visiting monuments and local beaches, and a well-timed glass of fresh mango juice mid-tour. The tour is expertly mapped out to make good use of landmarks across Male'. I found it helpful to visit the national museum ahead of the tour for context, and do a bit of reading ahead to set the context for Maldives' rich history.

Great snorkeling and sandbank tour with Nafsha
On April 20, 2024 I did this tour with Nafsha. The tour was amazing. We went snorkeling in two spots where I saw the beautiful reefs, a reef shark, and many stingrays. Knowing the tide was descent high, I wasn’t expecting much of the sandbank but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite enjoyable since the water was pretty shallow. Nafsha really took great care of me, showing me tips for snorkeling and helping me with the snorkeling tube. She was very knowledgeable about the religious practices, cultural traditions, and the marine life in Maldives. She also brought me a delicious coconut while I was staying on the sandbank. Even though I forgot to bring my dry clothing which I packed in my luggage, Nafsha went out of her way to help with my transport back to Malé to ensure that I could catch my flight and onward trip. The highlight of the trip was definitely the surprise spotting of Dolphins on our way back to Hulhumale. It was genuinely a beautiful scene to see! I would definitely recommend the tour if you are untested in doing some offshore activities around Malé.

      Fantastic city walk tour
I did the tour with Archie on April 19, 2024 and it was amazing! Archie was very knowledgeable about the history of Maldives and the landmarks known the Malé island. At no point was I in any rush. Archie really made sure that I had a good amount of time for each site. The tour is ideal for learning about the history, culture, and politics of Maldives if you have like half a day’s time on the Malé island.

The best ever customised & responsible travel of stunning Maldives local islands
My husband and I did a customised tour with Secret Paradise in April, and we could not have asked for anything better! From the moment I contacted Ruth, she took care to understand what we were looking for and created a tour which included a Male city tour, eco island tour of Vilingili, a 3 day stay at Dhigurah and a 2 night stay at a resort of our choice. With each guide we felt like we were catching up with a friend who showed us around. We were taken from airport to hotel with care and conversation. The city tour of landmarks and markets was an explosion of sights, history, architecture, politics, religion, geography and more. The eco island and what Beybe has been able to achieve as a grassroots activist is awe inspiring. And words fail to express how beautiful it was to stay at Dhigurah, walk on the white powder sands, snorkel in crystal clear waters and be able to swim with the majestic whale shark and manta ray. The manta ray tour wasn't even on our itinerary, but our guide organised it when we had a free morning and really wanted to give it a go. It is impressive that nearly every guide we met has also had the opportunity to join marine researchers in their activities and can speak with authority on these gracious creatures, the coral, the environment and much more. I had always wanted to go to Maldives, but wary of being stuck on a resort detached from the local culture and coming back pampered but without any of the exploration and broadened perspective that I really love about travel. I am thankful for the Maldives government opening up local islands to tourists, and for Secret Paradise for creating the possibility of safely and reliably undertaking responsible travel in this fragile and stunningly beautiful ecosystem. Also as an aside - can I just say how very comprehensive their Welcome Pack is and how holistic their pricing is. No hidden speedboat transfer fees or unknown expensive food costs etc. We spent nearly nothing on top of what was quoted to us upfront. This was my most hassle free overseas travel ever, that too in a country with a closed currency.

      Magnificent walk thru Malé
We visited Male from a cruise ship during Ramadan, and so many of the food tours during the day weren't available. We booked the afternoon 4-hour walking tour and learned we could take Iftar with our guide at a local restaurant. Our guide, Ahmed Shaffaf, met us at the Presidential Jetty, where the ships' tender boats landed. Very convenient! Ahmed Shaffaf took us through the nearby markets. His English is excellent, and he was able to explain everything we saw and get us samples of the various products. All the shopkeepers were very friendly and open. We felt very welcome. The markets were clean and well kept—no odor or foul floors. Afterward, Ahmed led us on a 2-mile loop through the city with frequent stops with time to duck into an airconditioned shop from time to time. Along the way, we learned about life in Male and better understood the local culture. The highlight of our tour was the opportunity to share Iftar with many residents. Afterward, it was quite dark, and Ahmed was careful to lead us down the dark seawall sidewalks safely. Ruth, from the Secret Paradise Office, was always prompt in responding to emails. Her company offers various excursions in the Maldives, and I highly recommend using Secret Paradise to plan your entire visit.

      A must-do!
Don’t even think twice and go for it! This is a must-do if you want to look beyond the shiny surface of Maldive’s sandy beaches and resort life to understand more of the local reality and have a glimpse of the island’s daily life. Hamti and Archie, my your guides, were extremely kind, genuine, and knowledgeable - it felt like a walk with two friends. They answered all my questions and gave me interesting perspectives on Maldive’s society, environment, and history. I will definitely take more tours with them in the future. Highly recommended!

We had a lovely walking day trip to two islands. I have hip problems and had to do the trip in a wheelchair with my husband pushing me. Unfortunately the weather was a bit rough and we could not snorkel or swim. But it was really enjoyable and our guide was very good.
Unfortunately we could not do the snorkeling trip because of the rough weather. The guides advised us against it. So it was a bit disappointing but a safer option. Thanks also for your very friendly service whilst we did the booking.

Hi Nerine Thank you for your review it is appreciated. You were so unlucky with the weather during your short stay but given we had to cancel your tour the previous day due to the weather conditions, I am pleased we were able to get you out and about island hopping even if for safety reasons you couldn't get in the water. A reason perhaps to return?! Glad that you both enjoyed and were able to experience local life if not the sunshine and blue skies for which the Maldives is known. I will share your feedback with UB and the team and hope that our paths may cross again in the future. Wishing you all the best with your hip operation and a speedy recovery. Kind Regards Ruth

Enjoyed visiting two local islands. It was interesting to see where the locals live and their livelihood. The pleasant surprise was seeing dolphins- so many! The crew was very nice. They circled around the dolphins to let me have a good view and take better photos and videos. The guides were very friendly and helpful. They tried very hard to get me the best lunch.

We were only in the Maldives for one day because we were on a cruise ship. Because of the nature of these islands, I knew that we should do some sort of tour involving the ocean. I personally do not snorkel but as the day involved visits to other islands, a cultural and sightseeing tour around one particular island and lunch on another island the tour sounded very attractive to me.
I was correct and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day with all of it's variety. I was with a group of 7 people and our charming guide was Zaff. We couldn't have done better from the moment we were picked up and shown to our motor boat. The ocean was a bit rough that day and we certainly had an exillerating ride through the waves. We felt very safe at all times and after an hour or so we arrived at one of the little scenic sandy islands. Once there we were given an interesting walking tour of the island and the village. Later on we went by boat to another island where we had lunch. All experiences were good and the restaurant was clean and we were able to sit under some shade trees.
From there we boarded our motor boat again and journeyed to a snorkelling area. As I didn't snorkel I stayed in the boat with two others, but those who snorkelled were ecstatic at what they saw below the surface. They were all very excited. I have to say that the whole day we were in these beautiful desert island surroundings and the water was the clearest you can find anywhere. The colour of the water reminded me of Tahiti as there is a similar aqua hue. It is certainly very beautiful. There was an option for extra snorkelling but our group felt they had done enough and so we returned to Male and the ship.
Our group contacted the company sometime before the date of our tour because they do get booked up. We emailed with Ruth who always replied promptly and she was always extremely helpful . You will not go wrong if you arrange a tour with this company and I guarantee you will have a good time.

Our family of four booked a last minute day trip out to the islands of Huraa and Himmafushi as we had a day to spare before an evening flight out. The trip included a walking tour of each island as well as lunch and an afternoon snorkeling stop. The guide was Ube, pleasant and personable as well as being an underwater expert. Ruth in the office is a star and was extremely helpful. Their work made this trip one of the highlights of our current vacation. We will gladly come back and book another trip with you, should our travels take us on a return to the Maldives.

I did the local islands (Himmurfushi and Huraa) day trip and it was just an outstanding experience! I absolutely enjoyed every single bit of it from the amazing snorkeling spots, beautiful beaches, meeting the locals to the delicious lunch. My guides, Shaa and Nashith, went above and beyond my expectations in every way throughout the day. You guys rock!
Thank you so much for making this trip such a memorable one.

The day of my tour was back in November of 2018. The meeting place was at the Hulhumale Jetty which was a 20 min. walk from my hotel. Upon meeting my guides (2) Mahee and Farish I found out that I was the only one on the tour that day. I chose to visit 2 islands South of Male. We headed out to Gulhi first with out boat captain, visited a shipping yard where they build boats. Walked around the town as Mahee explained the history of the island and it's people. Even got to taste fresh coconut juice and the flesh which is totally different from say a Hawaiian coconut. We then headed to the next island of Maafushi. Walked around the town, there's even a prison there and once again Mahee provided the history behind this island as well. We then had lunch at a local restaurant that had outdoor seating. Food was good! Company great! First time I tasted a chip that is made from garbanzo beans! Tastes close to having a chicharron but better! We then headed back North and stopped at a snorkeling spot in the ocean. Mahee was great to make sure I wouldn't drift away in the current by holding my hand. Saw a variety of beautiful fish. He suggested another spot to snorkel but I was a bit exhausted so declined and luckily we did as I could see from a distance some overcast skies with a dark rain cloud looming over Male. The current would've been stronger and water more choppy making snorkeling difficult. On the way back, we spotted a pod of pilot whales and tried to be quiet so as not to scare them to go underwater. And yes, we got caught in the rain heading back to Hulhumale. Rough seas and battered rain but it was an adventure! Since I was the only one on the tour, it felt as if I was spending a day with friends! Mahee even got us a "lift" so we wouldn't get wet from the rain, I was brought back to my hotel instead of walking. Farish was also great and he had to take the ferry back to Male as we departed since that is where he lives. The two of them definitely know their home and history of the Maldives, so book this tour if you want to see how the Maldivians live on other islands besides Male. Not as much motorcycles running around other islands, it's much more calmer, peaceful, and less crowded. Glad I did this tour so I could experience a different side of the Maldives.

Dear Val, Thank you for your detailed review, feels as though I was journeying with you! Glad to read you enjoyed your day exploring with Maahee and Farish, just a pity that the weather turned against you towards the end of the day, but good to hear you were well looked after. How awesome to have spotted pilot whales, you just never know what is out in the blue. Thank you for travelling with Secret Paradise and I hope you will travel with us again. Kind Regards, Ruth

The guide met us at hotel reception in Male, transportation to islands (speedboat and public ferry) was convenient and quick.
First we arrived to Huraa. It was a Friday and there was not much activity, locals usually rest and spend time with family on this day. We still checked out the boat building yard and some facilities for making dry fish. The freshwater lake was not quite what I expected, it's actually what remains from the lake after tsunami in 2004. Nonetheless, seeing the damage present after so many years was impressive. Truly a fragile eco-system. Huraa also has a very nice bikini beach, where we spent some more then an hour and enjoyed it a lot.
Himmafushi was the next island. Some walking around, food at a local restaurant and souvenir shopping. All as expected.
On the way back we stopped for snorkelling. The underwater world is amazing and you can see stingrays as well as many different colorful fish.
The guide then accompanied us to Male's fish and fruit market and back to the hotel. Very good service, I definitely recommend it!

Hi Laszlo, Thank you for the detailed review of your day, great to hear you enjoyed your local island hopping tour and that you were able to combine discovering our local culture with some beach time! Huraa is an interesting island isn't it and as you say a perfect example of how fragile our environment is. We trust you enjoyed the remainder of your stay in the Maldives and hope we can welcome you again in the future. Kind Regards, Ruth

My fiancee and I were looking for a way to get to know the local culture and people (and food!) of the Maldives outside of just being on a secluded resort with other tourists on our vacation.

Kokko was an excellent guide, he let us decide which route to take, while navigating us to the unique industries, features and traditions of each island we visited. We saw local fish production factories, shipyards, schools, mosques and had a delicious meal in the local style. All the while Kokko and his coworker had deep knowledge about the country and its history and the local people.

End of the day we went snorkeling at a spot known for manta rays. Amazing way to end a great day trip.

This tour to Huraa was great. I was picked up by the guide, Mashir, from Hulhumale where I was staying. The from Male we (me, Mashir, and one other guest) took a speedboat ferry to Huraa where we had a great traditional Maldivian breakfast. Then we walked around the island seeing the mangrove trees, fishing boats, fish paste making, and a resort. We had some time to swim and then after we saw some of the village as we walked through the streets. The speedboat took us back to Male and Mashir accompanied me back to my hotel. Mashir was a great guide and spoke excellent English

Good Morning, Great to hear you enjoyed your Discover Huraa Tour with Mash. You have summed up the tour content very well, I think you will agree it's quite a lot for a small island, but offers a great opportunity to gain an insight into the local side of life! What I still can't get over is the huge coincidence that one of the other guests who had booked was also from the same province! Always think it's a small world!! Thanks again for your review I will be sure to share with Mash and the team. Kind Regards Ruth

After 2 weeks of work this lovely day in Huraa Island gave the perfect vacation experience; efficiently coordinated by Ruth of Secret Paradise. A very experienced guide (Mr Mashir Ali) took us from our hotel to the speed boat jetty and across the seas to picturesque little village where we learned about local environment aspects including the production of smoked tuna and coconut leave brooms and then on to the pretty and cosy Pearl Sands Hotel & Spa. We enjoyed a soothing massage, a delicious lunch, a swim in the turquois sea and relaxing times on the beach beds. The most fascinating part was the change in weather; mildly cloudy in the morning, sunny in the early afternoon and with a huge rain storm brewing before our departure. The Gods were using the sky and horizon as their giant canvas and it was an outstanding panorama. A very beautiful day and experience to leave the Maldives with special memories.

Dear Sigrun Thank you for your review and for also painting a wonderful description of your day, you followed the 'god's' lead! Delighted that you enjoyed your experience which sounds as though it provided the perfect mix of local island life, spa therapy and relaxation to end your time here in the Maldives. I recall the afternoon of your return well, I was stuck in Male waiting for the rain storm to clear, so I was very happy to hear from Mash and learn you had beaten the weather back to Hulhumale! Thank you for travelling with us, I will be sure to share your comments with Mash and the team. I hope we can welcome you in the future should your work send you back in this direction again. Kind Regards Ruth
