    Brilliant evening tour
Really interesting tour of the city, went in the winter in the evening which really added to the atmosphere and was a good opportunity to see the city lit up in the dark. Peter had an extensive knowledge of the city and told it well, it was a smaller tour group that night but he was still able to fill up a full 90 minute tour and answer all questions.

Best way to start our city break
Fab full city tour.... The best mix of history, myth, legend and local custom. Peter was very entertaining and informed and gave us tips on how to get the best from the rest of our trip. This was a delightful way to get oriented in this wonderful city.

    Brilliant walking tour round Durham
This walking tour around Durham was excellent, our guide was very knowledgeable and brought the history of Durham alive for us. The tour lasted 90min starting in the market square and included the cathedral, university and prison. The pace of the tour was easy with only one steep path to negotiate and ending under Elvet bridge meant we were in the middle of town ideal for a bite to eat or a couple of pints.

    Excellent tour
As a group of friends who regularly go to Durham we were absolutely intrigued by the history and tales our tour guide Peter presented us with. Loads of stories we knew nothing about which made it more interesting. An excellent way of getting to know more about Durhams secret dark past highly recommend the tour and the tour guide Peter

A must for history and beer fans
Gona keep this simple and breif, it was fantastic. Out guide who is a teacher full time clearly loves his history and is very passionate about the town and the stories it has to tell. The tours are in small groups, which make it very personal, and it was interesting speaking to the other people in the group who were a lovely middle-aged couple coming back from Scotland. The pub selection was great and I revisted all the pubs we went to. A half pint of beer and a sit-down chat about the history was really nice and again made the experience very personal. Being a solo traveller, it was a nice touch to speak to other people who love their history. The tour probably lasted about 3 hours. However, this flew by and I could have spent hours chatting away. 30 quid is a steal really for three hours of history and some lovely beer to go with it. Perfect for this time of year when it's getting colder. A must when in Durham , will happily do it again when I'm back. 10/10 literally flawless

The must do tour of Durham!
We found this tour quite by accident but were convinced by the description and reviews. They didn't lie - in the two hours we walked around Durham our guide Peter almost always had an interesting fact to give about the view and the buildings. You'll get an overview of the well known and less well known spots in Durham and quite the history lesson of Durham in all of its fascinating (and gruesome) aspects. Peter is also a well of recommendations, if you are still planning where to eat and what to visit.

If you do one thing in Durham, make it this tour
Can’t recommend highly enough. Learned so much about Durham past and present. Coincided with Uni open day which possibly resulted in a few more stories. Now know the meaning behind money for old rope and going for a burton! Make sure you wear comfy shoes, it’s hilly and lots of cobbles.

Brilliant tour, great local knowledge, very friendly
Me and my friend really enjoyed this tour - it was just the 2 of us plus the guide so it was very friendly and interactive! He also had a great sense of humour and didn't mind us taking a couple of drinks around with us. Great value for money, very pleased we booked

    Interesting and enjoyable- must do!
What a fabulous introduction the history of Durham - and its pubs. Peter was super knowledgeable and made it really interesting-real insights into so many things we would have otherwise missed. And combining history and beer - what’s not to like. 100% recommend. Great value and definitely got more from our few days here as a result.

Peter’s walk around Durham on 23 May was everything we could have wished for.

The stopping off points, information and anecdotes that he had to share with us about the history and importance of the power house of Durham, its university, cathedral and culture was so well delivered as well as entertaining.

We could never have gleaned even half of the information wandering by ourselves. So many things we’d have walked by without knowing the significance had we not been guided by Peter.

This is a man who knows what he’s talking about, who is genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his subject.

It was a particularly cold and rainy day but he still managed to make it so compelling and interesting.

Can’t recommend WalkaboutDurham highly enough. You will not be disappointed.

Best wishes

This was our first visit to Durham and decided to book this tour to give us a flavour of the city. Peter was a fantastic guide who has a very deep knowledge of the city and was able to answer all of our questions whist giving very detailed information on Durham history. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2.5 hour tour which went by in a flash. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone wishing to understand the history and culture of Durham City.

Being a local I was a bit unsure how I would enjoy a walk around my own back yard ! We booked the tour to show our visiting family our beautiful city. It was however a real enjoyable experience as Peter was able to point things out we have walked past hundreds of times. Peter made the hour and a half whizz past with his knowledge of the local history and geography of Dunn Holme 👍
Highly recommend

It's one thing to be knowledgeable about a city, but it makes all the difference when your guide is passionate and a great communicator. Peter is outstanding. We'd been many times to Durham but never done a tour. We learned so much! If you think you know the city you probably don't! This is a tour not just for visitors from far and wide but even if you're local like us you'll find Peter's knowledge and stories fascinating. Thank you so much- you really deserve to do well. Sue and Keith.

Peter's tour provided our group from Hertfordshire with an excellent introduction to the city, outlining its history and development with clarity and humour, and included a lovely stretch of the river bank with views of the cathedral and other ancient buildings. He has particular insights into the University complex as well. We were amused to discove that our "local" Royal, the late Queen Mother, had ancestral links to the coalmining industry!

My first trip to Durham and this is the perfect introduction to this beautiful and fascinating city. It's a good gentle walk - Durham is hilly but the pace was easily manageable and there frequent stops for views, stories and historical education. My daughter has been studying in Durham for the last three years and also learnt a lot from the tour so this is for all ages and experiences. Peter is a terrific guide, and I would thoroughly recommend this walking tour to anyone visiting or even living in the city!

My dad and I chose to go on the Walkabout Durham History Tour, and we're so glad that we did. Our guide, Peter, was fantastic, and we thoroughly enjoyed our leisurely walk around the beautiful sights of Durham. The information and tales he shared with us were fascinating, and his enthusiasm certainly rubbed off on us. His knowledge of the history, geography and folklore of the city was very impressive as was his ability to keep us entertained and engaged. We cannot rate him highly enough and thank him again for the time he spent with us.

We met our guide Peter in the market square 10 minutes early and were then joined by 3 lovely ladies who had travelled down from Edinburgh for the day, making a total party 5. The first of several stops was the market corner with Peter finding a shaded area every time we stopped to tell about the history of the area we were in.
We walked along the river which was lovely and then crossed another bridge to make our way to the Cathedral.
Peter and the rest of our party chatted constantly about the history of Durham and you could tell he knew and loved Durham.
We would highly recommend this walk.
Thank you!
