Whether you are surfing for the first time or looking to improve your technique, a surfing lesson at Widemouth Bay in Bude with an experienced instructor, is a great way to give you the skills and confidence you could be looking for!
By far the best way to start surfing or to improve your ability is to get instruction from skilled and experienced coaches. It is amazing how simple it is to get riding waves when provided with appropriate instruction, practical knowledge and the right equipment. When you’re up on that surfboard riding your first wave, it will be one of the most exhilarating experiences you’ll ever have!
Whether you’re an absolute beginner and want to try surfing for the first time, or you’ve surfed before and want to improve your skills and technique, our friendly instructors will get you surfing with confidence.
Our lessons are held in small groups that allow for more personal attention. All equipment is included and the sessions are around 2 hours in length.

Please DO NOT go to Blackrock carpark. Our trailer is located at the entrance to the beach. You will need to arrive 15 minutes before your session start time. One of our instructors will be there to meet you.

They were professional throughout offering plenty of local knowledge and coasteering tips throughout the trip. They kept us safe whilst having a lot of fun jumping off cliffs, swimming through caves and clambering over rocks. A really enjoyable and worthwhile experience for us all. Thanks for a great morning. We were a large group and Robin’s communication was excellent and the booking was very easy to make. The meeting place instructions were all crystal clear - we knew exactly where and when and Robin’s team were always there ready and waiting for us. Monty and Alfie were the coasteering and surfing instructors and did a fantastic job - everyone had a brilliant time coasteering at a fantastic location and the surfers had an amazing experience and were all able to stand on their boards. The SUPs were all ready and waiting for us when we arrived and were all put away for us on our return - all in all a great week of activities which worked perfectly for our large group. We booked a lesson as we wanted to learn how to use the boards properly and it was excellent. Really good value for money and great instruction. We were quickly up on the boards and felt very safe. We will now hire boards through the same team to use going forwards as the boards were really good quality. They paid full attention to safety whilst making the experience fun and exhilarating. The walk to the beach was quite challenging however, especially on the way back up with the heavy wetsuit and gear. This is something that should be considered mentioning beforehand. Good instruction and health and safety info before we embarked upon our bouldering over the rocks before entering the sea. The session was quite hard as there was a fair swell of the sea which made getting in and out of the sea onto the rocks a little tricky at times but added to the fun. The whole family enjoyed the session and it was by far the best coasteering experience we have had in Cornwall. The beach area in the cove is stunning.Written August 17, 2024

He was looked after so well by encouraging and patient instructors. They were very knowledgable and made me feel very safe especially with a younger member. We ended up doing some really high jumps and both kids asking to go again. I cannot rate them highly enough. We all came away buzzing. Give it a go, you will love it!Written August 13, 2024

Took their time if people were worried. Brilliant opportunity to see our Great British coastline close up whilst having an adrenaline adventure. - John s0 contributionsAVOID … POOR CUSTOMER SERVICEAVOID THIS COMPANY ….. terrible customer service. Poorly located… they reference places to park in their t&cs but reality is they are all full. When you talk to them about problems they reference how they are situated in a poor economic area. They didn’t find us an agreeable solution and kept ALL of our money despite not being able to use and enjoy the experience. GREEDY AND UNPLEASANT is how I would describe them…. USE ANOTHER COMPANY . My Daughter and I came to Bude at the start of June and had booked Surf lesson and Coasteering with Freewave. From start to finish the service was excellent, communications about weather and risks to activities were spot on and on each day of the activities the instructors were top quality. Friendly and knowledgeable we both felt at ease and as a Single Dad I felt comfortable with my 11 year old being in safe hands at all times. She had a slight wobble during coasteering but was superbly looked after. I can't recommend the team highly enough .

The best surfing lesson! I booked (at 6.30am) a lesson for my 11 year old son and his Dad for midday the same day as it was our last day of holiday. My son has had 1 surfing lesson before which was at summerleaze and in a massive group, so really the coach didn’t help much… this was COMPLETELY different!!! They literally had Marco’s full attention as it was only the 2 of them! He was absolutely brilliant with both of them, full of energy, jumping into the waves & really encouraging! Really like the fact that he took them out the water half way & reviewed how they were doing (which also have them a break from the powerful waves!) They both stood up loads of times & felt like surfers!! Would definitely recommend & we will be back for more when we can get another break down there. The biggest compliment- My son now wants to move to Cornwall & become a lifeguard like Marco!!! 🏄 Thank you so much 😊 x

Robin and the team were brilliant. Communication prior to the booking was great, the team on the day of the lessons were all friendly and professional. The photos that Charlie took throughout the sessions were great. If you're going near Bude/Widemouth I can't recommend these guys highly enough. Thanks for great memories,🌊😊👍

An excellent introduction to surfing. My 2 children (age 10 and 13) and I have had 2 surf lessons with James. He has been an excellent instructor, high praise from the children! He adapted to the needs of the group, taught the basics of technique and important safety aspects well. We all had so much fun, all standing up by the end of lesson 1 and feeling much more confident with lesson 2. As a mum I could get on and enjoy being in the sea and on the waves trusting the instructor was keeping an eye on my children which was amazing. The children absolutely loved it.... just the start of our surfing journey! Thank you so much. Highly recommend lessons with Free Wave 😁

Great taster session at Widemouth Bay with instructor Alec. First time a couple of us had been surfing and this was a great location to learn some of the basics. Alec did a great job explaining how to surf and was very supportive in the water. Tired, knackered and happy. Thanks!

If you are looking to have a surfing lesson I cannot recommend Freewave enough, they were brilliant from the inital enquiry, the welcome on the beach and looking after us in the water - it was brilliant.
We went as a family (youngest is 8) and we all loved it, the instructor James was really enthusiastic and cheerful, he gave us all the belief that we could all do it - and we did! Thank you, we cannot wait to get out on the water again.

Had a fantastic first surf lesson with Marco,
A good stretch on the beach to start and a couple of techniques to catch the waves, and we were up on the boards in no time,
Sea was a bit rough, but we all managed to stand at some point!!

We booked 6 teenagers in for a lesson with Freewave Surf Academy and they all had a fantastic time. Great instructors who made the session really fun. Loads of time in the water and lots of great surfing. Couldn't have asked for a better experience, thank you. Would highly recommend.

Loved the lesson, Glynn the instructor was great very professional clearly very experienced. As a solo female, I felt very comfortable and confident throughout the lesson. The beach is also a beautiful location with a nice cafe on site, parking is easy enough and to top it off I managed to get stood up on the board so all in all a great lesson would definitely come back again :)

My two kids (14 and 16) had a wonderful time learning to surf. The lead instructor (Marco) was great, and everything was well organised, from booking through to the lesson. Would go again.
On the day, it was quite windy, so bear this in mind when booking (something I'd not considered.). The beach has coastguards on it, who were very good about shutting off just one section, rather than the whole beach, which allowed the class to continue.
Charlie was also on the beach and has taken some excellent photos.
Overall, very happy and would recommend.
