Markus is a great guide and we had the pleasure of going on a trip with him on friday february 4th. We only had two nights in Tromsø, to experience the Northern Lights, so we were a bit anxious if we would succeed. Therefore we were in contact with Markus a couple of days before, and he even called us on the tour day, to let us know the changes probably were slim and he had an cancellation on Saturday, if we wanted to switch days. In the end we decided to go on friday, and were we glad we did!
We were picked up on time, and set off. The forecast told us to expect an opening in the clouds around 8 pm, but almost immediately Markus noticed an opening might be happening and managed to get us to that location, before all the other tours and we saw the first glimpes of the Northern Light - about just one hour after the tour started!
Another bus arrived at our spot, and we moved on the a secluded area, we had completely to ourselves, where the Northern Lights almost immediately showed itself once more.
Markus is really knowledgable about the topic and area, and great at explaining the phenonomem. Though it was cold, we had a great night, and the soup provided along with the fire were one of the highlights of the night.
We would definately recommend Greenlander and Markus to anybody else wishing to experience the Northern Lights out of Tromsø.

This was probably one of the most stress free tours ever experienced.
As my father and uncle have retired recently and want to now begin to travel internationally and see as much of the world as they can I have to book the travel and coordinate things for them as they cant afford package tours.
I reached out to Greenlander reading many of the great reviews and had Markus reply back who helped me coordinate things in the days leading up to their trip to Tromso. He made what was an arduous process seamless and easy. He went above and beyond to answer every question I had even outside of the realms of this tour and just basic Tromso advice which he didn't have to. He gave his number and made himself reachable for my father and family to call him if they had any trouble finding the meeting point which I cant thank him enough for given the trouble they have navigating new towns.
During the email thread and the back and forth questions he remained online and approachable at various hours including one time when he was going to pick his child up but still stopped to respond to my questions.
All of this exchange was in the lead up to booking when no money had been exchanged but when it came to finally booking he again went out of his way by when the system wasn't taking my card he held off seats for them while I figured this out and cracked the issue. One I had booked and they were there on the tour he consistently checked up on them to make sure they were ok. He would stop to ask them and other people on the tour if they were ok. This was peak Jan period when the weather was extremely cold!
He spoke to them and the participants throughout and would explain things as he drove. The tour was so enjoyable that the following day we booked the Fjord tour with Greenlander again which was equally enthralling. This is a must do for anybody and the personal intimate drive you get with this tour is second to none. The individuals that my family interacted with were all kind, polite and helpful. I would recommend them thoroughly based on my parents experience!

I’m a few weeks late in posting this review, however the fact that the experience is still fresh in my mind says a lot. Communication with Greenlander (Markus) was exceptional from the onset. We booked months prior to our Tromsø visit (thankfully as they sold out quickly).
Our experience was at the end of January 2023.
The travel weather-related drama for one of us getting to Tromsø was another story. Kelleigh’s arrival was 30 hours late and we would miss our Northern Lights excursion. Markus made a few adjustments and we were able to get out and experience not only some lights but explanations as to the meteorological and scientific events that were happening around us.
Matteo was our guide - so full of knowledge! It was then that we learned that we don’t chase the lights, we chase clear skies and bright stars and the lights will present themselves under those conditions. And did we chase.
Driving along the highway in a blizzard then high wind, then all of a sudden bright stars followed by Matteo “EVERYONE OUT!!!” in the middle of a very snowy, quiet, cross-border highway and there we were standing in the darkness watching the dance above our heads.
We piled back in the car and kept driving. We were in 3 countries that long night, walking across a frozen lake after crossing a walking bridge into Sweden (just because who doesn’t want to walk into Sweden in a dark snowstorm?).
Matteo’s love of and passion for the great outdoors (all seasons) and his energy were infectious. I highly recommend having him as a guide and can only imagine how wonderful it’d be to have Markus take us on our next visit.
Pure professionalism, the tastiest curry soup and burnt marshmallows over a bonfire and photographs that they take so we can be present in the moment.
Thank you team Greenlander! I only wish my friends who arrive to Tromsø today could have booked your excursion (but I’m happy to see that you’re fully booked out, as you deserve). Wonderful experience, highly recommend!

We recently visited Tromsø and booked with Greenlander on account of the small group size and great reviews. We were not disappointed at all. The smaller vehicle allows for more adventurous and bespoke lights searching but was still comfortable. We were hosted by Arbo (apologies if misspelt) who drove us nearly 4 hours to a good spot. Not long after setting up camp, we saw the lights. Arbo helped everyone set up their cameras and loan equipment such as tripods. When the lights appeared he became so enthusiastic and was encouraging where to look, helping with pictures, taking his own pictures and laughing. It was a once in a life time experience and Arbo is a beautiful human. Food (vegan!) Is available as well as tea, biscuits and marshmallows around the fire, with stories around the fire. We left at 530pm and got back at 330am. Arbo said he'd stop om the way back if he saw more lights, and everyone was asleep about 230am and I saw him stop and get out to check for the lights. Absolutely premium service, Arbo is a professional photographer too so took gorgeous pictures of everyone, and sent this by 5am (within 2 hours of arrival home). Unbelievable service, this experience is more expensive than some others, but worth every single penny.
(First 6 review pics are on my brothers iPhone, last 4 are from Arbo - many more sent)

The best think I can say about Greenlander is “WOW!!!”. They absolutely will do everything in their power to find the Aurora for you regardless of the weather and driving conditions. We booked two consecutive nights with Greenlander and the weather was wholly challenging both nights, including hard snow throughout the day for the second tour. Both Matteo and Markus consulted multiple web sites and used their expertise to move us to locations where the skies would be clear enough to give us a good possibility of seeing the lights. Thanks to their efforts we saw the Northern Lights both nights. The nature of the lights was different each night and I was utterly transfixed. It was great of Matteo to provide an explanation of the mechanics behind the lights and the colors produced while we were waiting for full darkness.
Arrangements for both tours were perfectly executed, even with Markus reaching out with the horrid weather on the second night to see if we would be available earlier to drive to Finland where chances of seeing the lights were at least a possibility (we had GREAT viewings!!) They provide tripods, boots and Arctic suits for your comfort. The campfire, warm drinks and the warm soup are welcome additions to the adventure but the main feature of the evening are the Northern Lights. I will forever be grateful to Markus and Matteo for their knowledge and diligent efforts to put is in the right location to experience a wonder I’ve dreamed of since childhood. While I took photos I will treasure, the photos provided by your guide will blow you away. (see Markus' photos attached) Excellent experience all around.

As we were a group of 8 friends travelling together our guide, Markus, arranged to collect us at our hotel rather than the normal meeting point. After collecting us he spent the first half hour studying weather maps to try and ensure that we had the best possible chance to see the lights. All the indications were that we had a good chance to catch them 1 hour north of Tromso on the coast. After a few detours we arrived on a secluded beach location around 7pm and to our delight the Northern Lights arrived almost immediately and put on a show for the next 4 hours. We know that we were extremely lucky but much of that luck was down to the knowledge of Markus. His enthusiasm for the lights is so infectious and he goes above and beyond to ensure you have the best possible experience.

This was an exceptional, successful tour whose primary goal was to see and photograph the Northern Lights. Markus picked up the 8 of us. We felt comfortable in his vehicle as we traveled inland some distance from the coast. The spot we finally stopped was perfect: it had a wonderful view of the sky overlooking a tidal pond. Markus had snow suits to put over our already warm clothing; a good recommendation as we were at the location for some time. Markus, a professional photographer in his own right, helped each of us to get our cameras set up for great images. The aurora cooperated to give us a stunning, hours long show. The northern lights were perfectly reflected in the tidal pool as well as the sky. While we were busy clicking away Markus took his own photos of us and the sky which he later emailed to us. After a couple hours of photography Markus made a campfire around which we learned even more from our host. He broke out hot chocolate, vegetable soup and cookies which were greatly appreciated. After a wonderful evening we broke camp and returned to Tromso. The best part: Markus's enthusiasm. After ten years of guiding tours in the Tromso area his knowledge and experience have been enhanced. Most of all we enjoyed his sunny attitude and zest for his work. We would highly recommend the Greenlander Northern Lights adventure to anyone who wants the best chance to view the Northern Lights and enjoy the company of a truly friendly and professional guide!

We had a really rewarding trip with Arbo. He was an amazing host and photographer. We left Tromsø at 17:30 without any real expectations given the heavy snow and full cloud cover. Arbo took us over the border into Finland’s where the sky was clearer. He was so positive and enthusiastic about finding a gap in the clouds… and then he did… he stopped at the side of the road and said ‘this is it’ . Almost as soon as we got out of the car, the show began. It was amazing. We stayed for almost 3 hours as the lights just kept coming. Arbo built a fire for us and we enjoyed soup, crackers, marshmallows, hot chocolate and cookies. Eventually we were surrounded by lights. Arbo was equipped with a great camera so the very best thing was the amazing pictures he sent us within hours. To capture the evening like this with great pictures made the trip even more special. We would recommend this trip. It was brilliant and worth every penny. We loved it.

Absolutely amazing experience we had following the Northern Lights with Jurre Jan de Wit (JJ) - awesome experienced and funny guide.
It was our first tour and JJ took us to 2 spots. The first one was a great start to see the lights and having an idea what to look for in the night sky. At the beginning we were the only group there. He searched and prepared a nice spot to take photos of all people with his professional camera. Everybody with own camera was able to shoot as much photos as they wanted. After 2 other groups (a minibus and a big bus) arrived we left that spot as it was him too crowded and he wanted to take us to an even better place.
So we went to the second spot in the middle of nowhere in between 2 mountains having a nice view to the left and right. It was the perfect background with the lights above. We got our thermal suits and boots and he prepared a camp fire with little chairs around. We had a very tasty pumpkin soup (no dry food bags) to eat and hot chocolate or tea to drink. Around the camp fire he explained very well and detailed what northern lights are and where they are coming from.
JJ did a very well job spotting the holes in the sky and keeping an eye on satellite data to be at the right time at the right places. We had no disturbing lights and experienced a night with intense northern lights visible to the pure eyes. The experience and the photos are amazing. Next afternoon he delivered a download link for the photos. We can highly recommend taking the tour with Greenlander in a smaller van.

Markus and the Greenlander team are amazing! If you are looking for a guide that will go above and beyond to give you the BEST chance to see the Northern Lights, choose Greenlander! And of course the PICTURES can’t be beat… his photography skills are unreal!
My husband and I booked two tours - first night the weather was cloudy, but Markus carefully examined weather to find us a great location with a break in the clouds so we could catch a glimpse before the clouds and rain took over the entire area.
The second tour was honestly like a DREAM. He found a spot protected from wind, with clear skies, running water from a nearby brook, and the lights were active for hours- providing the chance for multiple portraits.
Every time we mentioned hot chocolate the sky lit up again and the conversation, campfire, marshmallows and soup made the night absolute perfection!

They will not cancel unless there is a MASSIVE system. They call it “chasing” the Northern Lights for a reason. They will drive hours to get to clear skies.
Good luck!

Hi,
It all depends on the weather, but if there are no clouds you will almost definately see it.
When is best time to go ?
What months?
Thanks

I think any winter month can be good as it depends more on the specific weather and level of solar activity on any given day. The guides are great at monitoring both to increase your chances of a great experience. I went on Christmas Day
