- RKFlies0 contributionsWandering Owl - If you want the best book with the best!!!The private Wandering Owl tour of the Northern Lights four our family of six was spectacular!! It was a stormy night when we left Tromso and our guide, Bart used every trick in the book to ensure we had a beautiful sighting of the lights. He drove us all the way to Finland where there are micro-climates in hopes of some clear skies. Not only did he find one area that provided us fabulous views, but his desire to ensure we had the best the night could offer led him to bring us to several other spots that had even better views of the Aurora Borealis. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to express how impressed I was with Bart or how incredibly happy I was with the journey!! Do yourself a favor, if you are in the area and want to see the Northern Lights book with Wandering Owl. From the time I began my research, throughout booking, and then the actual tour - every Wandering Owl employee was attentive, gracious, and kind!! - scrublords0 contributionsWonderful time with Wandering OwlI was invited to go on the tour by my girlfriend and this was such a great experience for both of us. We both live within the arctic circle so we have the privilege of seeing the northern lights on the regular, but going into nature and away from the city lights made us re-experience the lights like we have never done before - the guides elevated the experience with funny comments and information about Tromsø and the Aurora Borealis, took plenty of pictures that were fenomenal and provided hot drinks and cookies. Personally i should've dressed more properly for the occasion, but the warm bus made the freezing cold bearable :-DWritten November 25, 2024

We were picked up by minibus outside the Scandic Ishavshotel with a group of about 12 people. From the moment we left, our guide Karolis was polite and helpful, explaining what to expect from the evening and giving us interesting facts as we made our way out of Tromso.
We drove around for about an hour, made a couple of potential spots to see the northern lights but the conditions were not quite right. We stopped at one place and there were at least 5 other tours, so Karolis suggested we carried on to find a less busy area. About 10 mins later we reached a good spot so the minibus parked up and we put on the snow boots and snow suit that was provided (you must send your shoe and suit size before arriving, this is asked for when you book).
Whilst we were suiting up Karolis went for a look for the northern lights and found them! At first they were too pale to see with your eyes but could see them through a picture Karolis had taken. We quickly set up our cameras (tripods were provided) with the help of Karolis and quickly took some photos (we borrowed a camera and are definitely beginners!). Thanks to the help with the set up of the camera, we had some great pictures of the lights. Karolis also patiently took photos of everyone with the northern lights in the background. These were sent to us all via email a few days after the tour and we were very pleased with the results (see photos).
For about the next half an hour the lights got stronger and stronger and we could see them dancing across the sky. It was nothing like I imagined but so much better! Obviously the weather conditions and light activity need to be right to see the lights, but the night started very snowy and stormy and we are so grateful for the effort Karolis put into finding the right spot. It felt like he really went the extra mile to find the best spot. What was even better was that we were the only group in the spot so we had the whole area to ourselves.
As the snow clouds started to cover, the bonfire was set up for us to sit down and enjoy a hot drink and reindeer stew with bread. It was very cold so we ate very quickly but had a great time hearing about the history of Tromso and the northern lights. Karolis was very knowledgable, we couldn’t have asked for a better guide.
I highly recommend Wandering Owl for the effort and professionalism that went into the tour. The minibus was comfy, we travelled no more than an hour from the centre of Tromso and both Karolis and the driver were polite, knowledgeable and very easy to talk to.
Many thanks to Karolis for making this an unforgettable experience.

Hello Plums28,
What a great and detailed feedback, thank you for taking your time to write it. No doubt it will be more than useful to future travelers!
Environmental conditions in the Arctic can be quite challenging sometimes and it can take a lot of time and effort to find aurora and see the show. Therefore, our guides experience and dedication are extremely important and valuable for us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed time on the tour with Karolis and had a chance to witness some northern lights dancing in the sky!
We are also proud of our guides being skilled and creative photographers. We include professional pictures taken by guides in every tour as well as homemade soups, biscuits and warm drinks (we love hot chocolate most of all!)
Thank you again for the lovely feedback! Hoping to see you in Norway again.

I am ecstatic that we chose to do this excursion. We were a little apprehensive given how much it costs and the odds of actually seeing the Northern lights but it was a risk we wanted to take. We did a lot of research on the best Northern Lights excursion and this came out on top for us - and it did not disappoint.
First of all, the main thing I would say it do not get too preoccupied with the weather in Tromso on the night. It was incredible cloudy the night we had our excursion but this is irrelevant because the tour operators research the best spots throughout the day, monitoring the weather and continuing to do just that whilst we travelled to the end destination.
We drove well over two hours (toilet stop an hour in) to a beautiful lake and luckily for us we didn’t have to venture into Finland, which is the last resort. We stopped several times so that our guide Wojtek could hop out and check the strength of the lights through his camera and assess if it was the spot for us. Along the way, Wojtek explained the origins and make up of the lights to us, including how they’re measured in strength.
We ended up sitting by a beautiful lake for over 3 hours, around a (very welcome!) campfire, and were served hot soup, hot chocolate and biscuits. The lights themselves literally came out of no where after 2 hours and we were treated to an incredible show! We also had professional photos taken throughout, which are fabulous compared to what a basic iPhone camera achieves. We did have to wade through around 2ft of untouched snow to get to the lake, and we sat in -23 degrees; even with thermal suits on it was still incomprehensible cold! As long as your healthy/ fit and happy to be cold, I would encourage you to do this tour!
I can not recommend Wojtek and the Wandering Owl team enough. It was an experience we’ll never forget - thank you!

Hello KM02194,
We are thrilled to hear that risk you've taken paid off :). We appreciate that you have taken time to describe in details your tour with Wojciech. No doubt, your feedback is valuable not only for us but for future guests too.
Regardless the environmental conditions, our guides always put a tremendous amount of effort into finding clear skies and showing our guests breathtaking northern lights. But it's not our only goal! Our guides know many secret, beautiful spots where we can have cozy campfire. Campfire in the wilderness along with hot homemade soup, chocolate and biscuits is and experience itself.
Great that you loved photos from Wojciech. he is very passionate and skilled photographer. It is hard to capture beauty on northern lights with a phone camera or with no experience in night photography, but no worries, we our guides do it for you :).
We really hope that you have fallen in love with the Arctic and decide to visit again!

We booked this 8 hour Northern Lights tour (6:00 pm to 2:00am) based on Trip Advisor reviews of Wandering Owl. We were not disappointed. Our guide, Karolis was very knowledgeable, prepared and worked hard to give us the best Northern Lights experience despite challenging weather conditions. He constantly monitored the weather to find openings for the lights. He not only found the lights, but provided tripods for cameras, set up cameras for the difficult conditions and took excellent photos with his own camera which were then posted for our use online. He also took us to a deserted beach on a fjord, lit a fire and gave us a nice hot meal. It was truly a memorable experience and one we would highly recommend. Note: Although we dressed for the cold weather, Wandering Owl provided cold weather suits which fit over our own and we're glad we used them.

Night tours in search of aurora depend in great measure on the guide and driver. They are the ones that will provide you with stories and knowledge about the lights. A different matter is being lucky to be out on a night of high activity. On this night Pol was fantastic. From the very beginning he made a goal to find a place with clear skies, as he was feeling there was going to be activity on that night. He took a bet taking us to a place he had never been before, and we were very lucky to camp in a quiet shore by one forjd and bingo! early after setting our tripods the norther lights started to make a total awesome spectacle. Even Pol was super excited, as the activity was very high and we were able to see some really beautiful aurora formations, pink lights included.
The rest was all professionalism from Pol, helping people to set their cameras, taking pictures of all of us several times while aurora was at the highest, taking more pictures and setting the fire and providing food and warm liquids to all of us.
As he described after it was a great night, with joyful memories. Definitely my best night hunting for northern lights. All the best Pol!!

We had the Spanish Pol as a guide. He was very talkative. Whilst everyone knew that this evening was very cloudy, he did his best to drive us to a Finnish microclimate known for clearer skies. We did find some clearer skies.
During the long drive there, Pol would let everyone in our group present themselves to get to know each other, quiz us and educate us on different subjects, which made the drive fun and engaging.
We didn't see aurora that night, but Pol tried to keep spirits up by being positive

Hello pjbeldak,
Thank you for your review, we appreciate feedback from all our guests. We understand everyone wants to see the Northern Lights, we do our best to find them for all our guests, we do know the frustration when mother nature has other plans in mind. What we are providing for our activities is our dedicated service, our home-made food. These are all aspects that we can control and can improve on, feedback it valuable to us.
We are confident Pol did his absolute best to find gaps in the clouds and it is lovely to know you have enjoyed your time with us regardless of the Northern Lights. Next time you are in Tromso we'll be sure to double cross all our fingers and toes for you!
We wish you all the best in your future adventures.

The adventure started at 6PM and right a way we headed out of the city and located lights by the ocean inlet. When clouds came in we continued stopping at several other locations and we viewed light at each stop. Our guide Wojtek, was excited about viewing lights as we were and he took some amazing pictures, which are available to download for free. WE returned to town about 12:30 AM

We went on a night trip with our daughter (12 years). The service provided from online booking to drop off was really high standard. Our guide Pol did an amazing job - thank you again. The photos were super professional and will remind us a lifetime of this unique experience. The busses are super new, the thermo suits and boots were of high quality and really warm. Fantastic night that exceeded our expectations. Virgil is a treasure. From the start he had assessed the weather, cloud, expected clear spots and left no time getting us to the best spot before others.Raced around getting every one organised - energy +++ - and once to the spot helped everyone with there cameras, and then took photos of each of us with the lights as backdrop. Lit a fire and had supper and a very clear explanation of the science behind the lights. Other groups wandered past and left and then more Northern lights, aga on with Virgil helping with where, what and how. As I said Virgil is the "MAN" and a treasure.

What an amazing time we had on our Northern Lights Chase with Wandering Owl and our fabulous guide Wojtek.
The pick up was prompt and excitement started immediately as Wojtek’s passion to give us the time of our lives was clear.
The sky did not disappoint the Aurora activity was high. Our first stop was just heading North out of the city in a howling Arctic wind -23’ all added to the thrill of seeing the lights for first time. Wojtek captured it all expertly with his camera. Avoiding the wind we set up camp in a shelterd spot by Skulsfjord, a fire, soup, hot chocolate, cookies we had a very special few hours there. Then on to a third location to capture some more stunning scenes of the ever dancing lights. Superb experience. Thankyou Wandering Owl and Wojtek.

Karolis was our amazing tour guide and Michael was our driver. They did a great job of finding clear skies. Karolis and Michael did an excellent job of setting up the fire. The soup was delicious. Karolis showed my how to set up my android camera. He also took wonderful time-lapse pictures of my wife and I. We did not have to smile for 3-seconds; you'll have to go on the tour to find out the secret! Both of them did an excellent job pointing out the Northern Lights
I highly recommend using Wondering Owl.

hello good afternoon, could you help me, we are 3 mexicans we will be in tromso from april 21 to 23 but there is no tour for those dates, we would like to know if there is a way to organize something

Unfortunately, you won't be able to see the Northern Lights that late in April. The best time to see them is during the Arctic winter between November and February. Although the Aurora is technically there all year round you need dark night sky to be able to see them

excellent experience! tour guide was really carefull and the food served was nice! the only suggestion is give he specific clouthes before the tour start

Hi, What is the likelihood (understand this is difficult to predict) to catch the lights during last week of March? The days are longer so concerned whether its worth waiting until next year or its not an issue.
Written February 14, 2022
I am really no expert I am afraid, but I would imagine the likelihood of seeing the lights decreases the later you leave it. If you message Wandering Owl (the tour company), they may be able to give you more accurate info, but March/April is likely to be towards the end of their northern lights tourism seasons.

Hello, i see that the description states that we may cross over into Finland to see the lights. If so will we be required to get a covid test to enter Norway again?
Written January 23, 2022
When I was there, we did not need to travel to Finland but the only documentation we had been told we needed to take with us on the trip was our passports. My belief is that you would not need anything other than that but if you did you would be told before going on the trip. It may be worth checking current restrictions to enter Norway, but I got the impression that Finland and Norway had a special arrangement in this regard. Both trips I went on did not take the money from your account straight away (I can't remember how many days before it was payable but was not many) but you are contacted by the trip provider so I'm sure you would be able to ask beforehand. I would encourage you to go and I hope you will be as lucky as I was!
