The Wonders of Northern Norway For generations, the magical Northern Lights have filled people with enthusiasm and awe. Given its location at 69 degrees North and beneath the Northern Lights Oval, we have exceptionally good conditions for “chasing” the lights. Even though we have considerable experience and extensive knowledge of the Northern Lights and the local surroundings, it’s impossible to guarantee a successful chase. No one can! However, we will do our utmost to ensure you have an unforgettable experience. During the 2015/2016 season, we spotted the Northern Lights on 96 % of our chases. We will pick you up outside Magic Ice in a minibus (the maximum number of passengers is 15). We provide ourselves on providing excellent, personalized service. From here we will drive you into Norway`s wide open landscape. Sometimes we drive quite a distance from Tromsø, other times a much shorter distance. We decide, where to go, just before we set off, based on the weather forecast and our knowledge for the Northern Lights and local surroundings. There may be snow and poor conditions on the coast but excellent conditions somewhere else. We never know for sure when or where the Northern Lights will appear or how intense the activity will be. Consequently, it is important to reach places where the vastness of the spaces and the darkness will give us the highest prospects of seeing and experiencing the Northern Lights, even on nights when the activity is not so intense. On the way your guide will provide you with information about the area and the Northern Lights. We will be more than happy to answer your questions and will do our utmost to ensure you have a memorable trip, regardless of the weather. We provide warm thermal suits in varied sizes. We also have a selection of hats, mittens, socks and boots. If you have your own winter clothes, please bring them otherwise we will do our best to provide suitable gear. Please, remember to wear woollen underwear or similar as dressing in layers is important. Even though it is not that cold along the coast when you consider the latitude, it can get quite cold when you are outside at night over a longer period. Hence, it is important to dress warmly in order to enhance your overall experience. If you feel unsure about your clothing, please, trust our experience and recommendations. If you want to take good photos of the Northern Lights, we recommend a DSLR camera and a tripod. We are experienced Northern Lights photographers and will be happy to assist you with your camera settings and offer tips. We also take photos on each tour and (conditions permitting) we will take a photo of you with the Northern Lights. After the tour we will e.mail you the photos free for charge within a couple of days. To receive photographs from us you need to sign an agreement according to the European law (GDPR) that we are allowed to take a picture of you. If you want to withdraw your agreement it is only possible in a written way. Please, note your excursion date.

Thanks so much to Karina our guide, and driver, Robert. First stop after a punctual pick up outside the Magic Ice in Tromso, was to the office to kit out those with thermals who needed it. Onwards. Karina telling us all about the lights on our way to search the lights, the level of activity and showing us the satellite picture of the aurora on her phone. She did it! Spotted first from the bus window, we decamped and soon were able to see it unfolding, not for long. For those who spent all the time setting up their cameras, the moment could be lost. To just to stand and stare.........Onwards again, this time stopping after spotting it again through the bus window, air very clear and cold at -9. It travelled across the clear sky, colours emerging. Karina helped those who again wanted photos, she also took photos of everyone against the sky, then produced coffee, tea, cake and chocolate. Lovely. Picked up 7pm and back at our hotel at 1am, after travelling to near the Finnish border. Well done Karina and Robert for finding them for us, such a small window of opportunity. Only small critisism, the Mercedes bus seats could be rather too small with all those added layers on!

Dear guest, thank you again for joining the tour. We are very happy to hear, that you enjoyed the chase. It was a long and cold night, but well worth it. We are sorry to hear, that you felt a bit squeezed with all the thick winter clothes. Unfortunately, all the bus models are made in a similar way and don't offer bigger seats. They are not designed for Arctic fashion! Kind regards from frosty Tromso and welcome back.

We were collected by Karina in her car as there were only 4 guests. Right from the beginning she made us feel at home. She had a great manner, she was very informative and amusing. Her English is really good. Our safari was quite an adventure and she was determined that we see the Northern Lights. She persevered until we had quite a show and she took great photos as well, despite the -19degrees plus wind chill! She's very conscientious and a pleasure to be with. Thanks Karina!

We were picked up at the right time and after a short introduction we were dove to a warehouse where received our isolation overalls and drove to our destination to see the nothern light. This was a very nice experience and the excursion leader showed how to make right pictures. After receceiving a snack and hot drink we drove back to our Tromsoe hotel.

Have done this tour previously during a different visit.
The first stop is perhaps not ideal as it faces a harbour with quite a few lights, it is also situated next to the main road so we had quite a lot of the glare from the headlights all the way around the mountain side where your camera would be positioned. We spent quite a bit of time there which perhaps was too long, in my opinion, but I can appreciate that perhaps we just didn't have a very strong night sky there at the time.

Second stop was better and more ideal. We managed to capture some of the lights here more clearly and I think it would have been a more preferable spot after so long at the first location.

Guide was friendly, polite and helpful and was happy for the tour to go to it's full allotted time. It is also appreciated that you can download the guide's photos from your tour incase your own camera is not suitable/fails or you just don't manage to capture them as clearly.

Would recommend if staying in Tromso but think the location of the first spot needs to be reconsidered. Happy to share our own photos upon request.

Dear Sarah, thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that we couldn't live up to your full expectations with our tour. The first location in Skulsfjord is a very popular place to look for the northern lights by many operators. We went there on a Saturday night, which can be very busy for traffic as I explained on the tour. It is much calmer on a regular weekday, but you decided to join the tour on the weekend. We stayed there for some time, because the weather was good and it was not too cold. It is important to think about the comfort too, while being outside for a long time. Our second location was colder, since we were in the mountains on a frozen lake. It is difficult to stay on places like these for a long time as our years of experience have shown. We will be looking for new locations to visit in the future and thank you for your input.

We just got back from 4 days in Tromso. We did this Northern Lights safari twice and were very disappointed. Below is the letter I wrote to Karina the owner/tour leader.

Hello Karina

I came with a large group of people on two of your Northern Lights tours last weekend.

I am writing to let you know how disappointed we aIl were after both tours and with the way you handled our tours in particular our last one. We went on the first night to the Finish boarder and were unlucky not to see the lights but you explained that it is hit and miss but not to worry as the following evening was rated a 3 which was better than the 2 for that evening. You did not offer us any significant discount or even a complimentary attempt at seeing them the following night even though you had a group booked already for the following evening. The weather was atrotious and there was a snow storm forecast yet you said not to pay any attention to it. You did the same journey all the way out to the Finland boarder and it was clearly a snow storm and it was obvious very early on that the weather was not going to clear up yet you did not speak truthfully and let us know that there was no point in continuing and giving us our money back instead you continued and this time it took us 7 hours (7pm-2am) of driving in ridiculous conditions just to turn up sit in the bus eat cake and drive back! You still charged us for the second night £80 and this was not right.

We left feeling cheated of our money and distrusting of you and your company. I guess you thought you would make a quick buck out of gullible desperate tourists who you would likely never see again. If you had been more professional like the whale watching tour we did the next day and offer us a free second attempt the following evening (this should have been done the first night) or at least a significant discount as a a courtesy at least but you didn't you took advantage and lied and I am not happy. I feel like you should know that this is not a nice way to treat customers or to have a successful business and would like to leave you and your potential clients some feedback and warning!

I would also note that I have written to the company Solo Travellers that we booked you through and have advised them to consider not using your company again for future trips as we were all really upset with the way you handled things. You left us with a bitter experience of your company but also of Tromso and that is sad. If you really have been doing this for as long as you say you should know that the weather forecast for a blizzard should be taken seriously. You need to offer customers a complimentary free trip the following evening if they do not see them or at least some sort of discount like all other tour companies in similar situations do - the whale watchers did this and every similar company in New Zealand and South Africa that relies on nature offers this to keep their customers happy and so they will speak positively of their experiences. You had 21 unhappy customers that day and 21 unhappy customers will complain to many of their friends and family and with the likes of social media and other review sights this could be worse for business than losing a few extra Krone by offering a small discount from the start!

I hope you take this feedback seriously and change her methods.

My advise would be to ensure you are not disappointed is to try to get some sort of guarantee that if you are unlucky enough not to see the lights that you are offered a discount or complimentary chance the following evening at least as it is expensive and she obviously will take advantage of customers by taking them out to see them under the guise of "you can't trust the weather" even when there is obviously no chance of seeing them.

I know it is hit or miss but that is not what bothered us - it was her dishonesty that left us feeling cheated.

Good luck.

Yesterday I booked the tour of the company Scan Adventure owned by Carina. It was snowing a lot and when I came to the meeting place I discovered that many companies cancelled the tour and people went disappointed. But the assistant of Carina Roy came (he explained that "Carina is ill and couldn't come")and told us that we are going to Finland and will try to see the Northern Lights there. We drove 3 hours to Finland, Roy provided us with warm clothes, hot drinks and delicious cakes. Then we found clear sky and saw the magic Northern Lights.

Joining Scan Adventures to chase the lights was the best decision ever! Having to choose from so many companies that do the same tour from Tromso, reviews are the only real way to find any differentiators between each company. Karina was the tour guide & driver and was fabulous start to finish.
The night we joined the tour probably had the worst weather conditions for aurora hunting - heavy snow storms, thick cloud cover. Karina was still enthusiastic, reassuring but also realistic about our chances as opposed to any kind of cover up. But still we set off to her office where we were dressed in super warm thermal suits. Its easy to tell Karina knows Tromso inside out as she gave us good history, pointed out landmarks etc as we drove through the different streets and along dark roads whilst trying to find clear skies. Her assistant was on the phone in contact with other guides, plus constantly checking activity levels and weather. After a while driving, she stopped at a spot with a patch of clear sky! This gave us all hope as we had hardly seen a single star the whole drive! After a few minutes of waiting around and getting our eyes used to the sky, we saw faint bands of the aurora! At first it was hard to spot with the naked eye (especially if you've never seen the lights before) but photos were surely picking up the shades of faint green. Then the activity got stronger and we were able to see the lights move, fade away, appear again and capture some amazing shots! But this was not the end. Karina drove us on, determined to find more clear sky with the chance of stronger activity! Despite being in touch with locations where other tours were going, Karina found another spot with clear sky based on her own judgement/experience. We couldn't believe our luck to find these clear spots both times we got off the bus. This time, the show was spectacular! Thick bright bands shining down on us, with shades of green, purple, yellow! We saw the different shapes the aurora produces - bands, curtains and a corona which can be rare to see!
Karina took awesome photos of us all and emailed them to us the next day! Hot drinks and cakes were provided. Before we left to come home, she explained a bit more about predicting the aurora and how to find it. This was informative and interesting. We all also received certificates for completing this wonderful chase but all credit really does go to Karina who offers a tour that's good value for money and with the reassurance of knowing that she will try her best even in the most unlikely of conditions!

We went out in search of the Aurora with Karina when in Tromso two years ago and weren't disappointed, so decided to book with her again this time. She found us clear sky and we had the most amazing Aurora lighting up the whole sky with bands, curtains and a corona. It was spectacular and we stood and watched for several hours. What marks this trip out from the others is Karina's enthusiasm. From the moment you board her mini-bus she excudes enthusiasm, excitement and knowledge, which is really infectious.

On a practical note this trip is very good value for money, Karina provides warm clothes if required as well as tea and cake. Since the trip two years ago Karina has extended the hours of the trip until 1a.m. which gives longer to enjoy the lights.

If we go back to Tromso again we would not hesitate to book with Karina. She has made us into fellow Northern Lights' Junkies!
