MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art
    Stop: 90 minutes
The rooms of the Permanent Collection show crowning moments in the history of the applied arts, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, as well as exemplars of contemporary art. In addition, the outstanding program of temporary exhibitions shown at the MAK has established it as one of the most innovative art institutions in the world. MAK Permanent Collection VIENNA 1900 A fascinatingly diverse cultural era, “Vienna 1900” became a myth long ago. The MAK focuses on the equally multifaceted and momentous design and arts and crafts of this period in its Permanent Collection VIENNA 1900. Some 500 exhibits have been specially chosen and arranged in diverse thematic displays in order to shine a light on the art historical as well as sociopolitical aspects of Viennese Modernism. MAK DESIGN LAB Across approximately 2 000 square meters, the MAK DESIGN LAB demonstrates the many ways design can contribute to positive change. Contemporary projects by designers, artists, architects, programmers, activists, and idealists that react to the challenges of the 21st century and visualize problems, suggest alternatives, or offer solutions are contextualized in complex ways with historical approaches from the MAK collection. More than 500 objects, as well as tools, scientific research, and technologies present alternative paths for our current lifestyles and show approaches for a sustainable transformation of our modes of production, lifestyles, habits, and systems.

MAK is located fairly centrally in Vienna and is around half a mile on foot from Mitte station.

The building in which MAK is housed is very fine. There are numerous exhibitions on display some of which I found interesting, others less so.

The showpiece is arguably the Vienna 1900 section which contains art and design from the Secessionist period.

There were interesting works by Gustav Klimt, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, Adolf Loos and Koloman Moser amongst others.

I found the Picture Book Art exhibition less good, based on fairy tales and other children’s books and publications.

The 100 Best Posters from Austria, Switzerland and Germany was not bad, as was the collection of artefacts from China, Korea and Japan.

There were also a huge collection of chairs which I was not overkeen on.

Overall a slightly underwhelming experience for the €15 entry fee. The Belvedere, for example, has a much better cross section of quality artwork in my opinion.

Great exhibition! A wonderful setting and well worth visiting.
It’s a pity that they offer online tickets that are a farce.
When you arrive at the museum you need to queue in line to get a band on your wrist! This is just a joke!
Also the staff where not amused with our disbelief in this complicated and useless system.
What a shame.

The building is lovely but seems rather empty and sparsely furnished with exhibits in places. Not the friendliest museum we visited in Vienna, we were scolded by one if the many museum staff for setting off an alarm on a chair exhibit, we didn’t see any instructions to tell us where we were allowed to walk (or not!), this appeared to be a frequent occurrence as we heard it going off after us several times, perhaps better signage is required? Then in the next room with Biedermeier furniture I tripped over a large glass plate underneath each room setting which I hadn’t seen and was told off again. I felt like a naughty schoolgirl!
One staff member followed us around a whole room when there was no one else in it, a bit intimidating to say the least, perhaps he thought we were casing the place?!
Best bit of the visit was the excellent cafe, we were warmly welcomed, seated and fed and the apple and blue cheese soup was delicious, it’s a lovely setting too. The museum shop has some really good quirky gifts too and is worth a visit on its own.

Wonderful collections thoughtfully displayed in a beautiful building. I loved the Art Nouveau furniture in particular, and the book display was very interesting and unusual. I appreciated the comments by the curators and display designers, too.

Superb building by the versatile 19C architect Heinrich von Ferstel; exquisite collections of Persian and Turkish carpets, East Asian ceramics and statuary, and European furniture, especially from the Secession. But the curating is distracting and pretentious: small items are dumped on the floor rather than exhibited at eye-level, while captions are absent or limited or presented in elaborately contrived ways. The management should show their collections more respect, rather than using them as occasions for curatorial theatrics.

Arts and crafts fans will love here but the highlight for us was the absolutely stunningly beautiful building, a sight to behold. The gift shop was worth a visit even if you have had your fill of museums... there are a lot in Vienna. Enjoyed the chair exhibits also. Lovely area to sit and soak up the atmosphere and nice cafe with a great buzz.
Heard about it on the big bus tour had not planned to visit but glad we did.

I find museums devoted to design somewhat tricky to value. There is so much detail and theory to appreciate that they tend to be sites for the initiate and a bit dehydrated, if not downright dry, for most.
Not so the M.A.K.
It is awesome from the first step into the entry hall. And runs the gamut from sparkling to ethereal in each distinct nook and exhibition passage.
I wanted to see this institution because I love the art nouveau approach and expected to be enchanted, but hadn't realized the extent of its application before. Here is a display of how it could permeate lifestyle. Along with furniture, in inlays, fabrics, silhouette and shape, the styling extended to accessories and surroundings in wallpaper and carpeting designs and utilities so that every aspect of residency provided inspiration.
While elements of the late 19th and early 20th century dominate the collection, there are other displays the present a variety of artistry, oriental ceramics, lace, recyclable applications among those on view during our visit.
One of the great thrills was an augmented reality showpiece that expands a Gustav Klimt fantasy garden into a 3-D tour when you don the goggles and handle the remote.
In all, this is a place that embraces elegance and uplifts even the uninitiated.
Then there is the spectacular gift shop which leads to a fabulous cafe.
Exquisite museum for an ethereal world that was.

We planned to visit this museum to see the Seven Princesses panels by MMM. When we arrived at the museum there was an event on therefore our entrance was free that evening. However I would gladly have paid the price of entry to see a truly magnificent piece of art by one of Scotland's least known artists. Margaret and her husband were more appreciated by the secession movement in Vienna.

If you visit this museum you simply must spend time to explore the panels.

I attended the first full day of the new exhibit on artificial intelligence. Although a few of the exhibits were not complete, it was a very engaging, though-provoking exhibit that raises important issues about this vital topic.

It's probably not the first place that most people on a short stay in Vienna would put at the top of their list, but if you are an admirer of early 20th century furniture, silverware and artwork, it is well worth a visit. Like many Viennese buildings just the structure of the building itself justifies a visit.
