- S2516PWdavidm0 contributionsA Museum for our TimesOne of the best things to visit in Vienna. This place is a real find. Well managed and beautifully presented, you are welcomed with warmth and a genuine love for the film which also gives you an insight into the city’s history. Of course you’ve seen the film, haven’t you? But did you know that the author Graham Green and British double agent Kim Philby (or “Harry” as he was also known) were friends? There are lots of fun elements too. Try sticking your fingers through a sewer grate, see a cat and some shadowy figures, watch part of the film on a projector from a genuine 1938 piece of kit, gawp at the gravestone used for the cemetery scene and recreate the marvellous big wheel scene. Harry Lime isn’t dead, of course…or is he?Written November 23, 2024
- D853GWneill0 contributionsGive this museum a visit, you will not regret it!Even if you haven't seen the film, a visit to this museum is well worth an hour or two of your time, especially if it's raining, and I'm sure that many people will be unable to resist the urge to watch, or re-watch, the film as soon as they get back home. The building housing it is a typically intriguing Viennese construction that probably has a history all of its own, and inside, the creators of the museum have taken advantage of the small rooms and passageways to evoke the Third Man vibe, complete with zither music. I was impressed by the way they have made use of the available space, inter alia by the clever use of mirrors to allow you to see the far side of some of the exhibits, in particular the heavy old cameras used in the filming. This is a proper, user-friendly museum, with hundreds or even thousands of items supported by photos and video, and the answers to any questions anyone might have about post-war Vienna in general and The Third Man in particular. I bought a couple of books in the shop, which complement the visit, and inevitably made me want to return to Vienna sooner rather than later to follow The Third Man Trail. The best thing is that this is a true labour of love, researched, founded, created, and maintained and operated by a small group of enthusiasts, a lady and gentleman and a trio of younger women, any one of whom could be the Third Woman, who leads you to the third of the three sections of the building. I don't know what these fine people do during the week, but they are very happy to chat with their visitors on a Saturday afternoon, and do seem like a very nice bunch of people. I wish I could have stayed longer. If I ever find myself back in Vienna on a Saturday afternoon, I will be found in this museum.Written November 1, 2024
- GrandTour553767806980 contributionsA Hidden GemHaving been turned on to the movie many years ago by my high school German teacher, it was a bucket list stop that I didn't want to miss once I got to Vienna. I went alone, while my wife, who wasn't really interested, navigated through the nearby Naschmarkt. The museum was a dazzling experience, with up close and personal details putting you in the middle of the film. Loved the original touches - the sewer room and grate, the actual zither that Anton Karas used to play the theme music, the original advertising posters, plus biographical sketches of all the main characters, one of which is still living (hint: "Moerder"). It all culminated with viewing a clip of Orson Welles being hunted and chased through the Vienna sewers. The museum is open only on Saturdays, but well worth the time to visit.Written October 30, 2024
- KristenGlenrowan0 contributions‘The Third Man’ museum…spectacular and a place you have to visit. What an AMAZING MUSEUM. This is a must to visit. It’s a privately owned/ run museum and the collection about this movie is spectacular . So much information, relics and original pieces. We loved it and on return to Australia we watched it immediately. Kristen & Mark…AustraliaWritten October 12, 2024
- Thirdface0 contributionsWell worth seeking out. This is a great museum hidden away in the back streets of Vienna and occupies three separate buildings. Everything you want to know about the film is here, from original scripts to an original film projector to the original zither. Well organised and great fun.Written October 11, 2024
- 989rr0 contributionsNot just for fans of the movie, but it helps!I promise that you will be amazed by the thoroughness of this collection and the dedication Gerhard has given to the presentation. It is simply beyond words. Everything is original; no copies or facsimiles. Be sure to engage him in conversation about your shared passion for the film and to ask any question you can imagine. He has the answers. There is also a small section devoted to how Vienna coped after the end of WW2; not something you find in museums here. The expansive layout covers three buildings and is located just a block from the famous Naschmarkt and the Kettenbrückengasse U4 subway station. The Third Man Museum is well worth your time if you enjoyed the film, and an absolute must for the cinephile.Written September 30, 2024

- Lynne W0 contributionsThis Museum is a must see! This is an intriguing museum with much to see. It is extremely well done, very thorough and educational, with amazing visuals and interesting text. If you love the movie (The Third Man) and even if you’ve never seen it (but you should definitely see it!) you will love this museum! Please know that it is so much more than being about the movie as it delves into Vienna during and after WW2. The movie was filmed in Vienna shortly after the war and so this history adds much to one’s understanding of the movie, as the movie adds to one’s understanding of Vienna under occupation.Written June 22, 2024
- deborahh9220 contributionsAn extraordinary musuemThis museum is absolutely brilliant, it's so informative of not just the film but about Vienna too. No matter how many times you've seen the film here just adds more context to it, especially when you walk around Vienna and just randomly spot the doorway to Harry Limes apartment building. It might only be open on a Saturday but it's definitely worth a visit, the owner and the staff do an amazing job of looking after personal letters, signed photos and zithersWritten December 16, 2023
- Matthew222730 contributionsHighlight of our 3 day weekend in ViennaWe loved our visit! The movie brings you in but the detail around life in post WW2 Vienna was really impactfull. Our top highlight of our 3 day weekend. The owners were awesome!Written December 11, 2023

- susansO2583JH0 contributionsA must see museumThe museum was amazing! I love the film and it was great to see so many stills, posters and memorabilia. The owners have spent years collecting items and they are lovingly displayed. A highlight for me was seeing 2 minutes of the film shown on a 1936 projector. I could have watched more! Also very interesting was the exhibition on post war Vienna. A must see museum when visiting Vienna. Thank you.Written October 4, 2023
- B4851SKkevinh0 contributionsExcellent tour and museum collectionI highly recommend the museum and the small group tour. Our group of 3 took the Cold War Vienna walking tour. Gerhard has extensive knowledge of the times before, during, and after the war, and he shares his knowledge and his passion for the subject, along with sights that tie into The Third Man. The tour ends with a visit to the museum and its collection of many interesting items from the film. The museum also includes an enlightening collection of items that reveal many aspects of post-war life and struggles in Vienna. We were extremely glad to spend time with Gerhard and that we made the tour and museum part of our visit to Vienna.Written September 3, 2023
- 259lolae0 contributionsIncredible treasure trove of film historyThis museum was the highlight of my trip to Vienna! I visited while solo travelling, and loved getting lost in the extensive and enchanting collection. I was blown away by the treasure trove of rare film memorabilia - from Trevor Howard’s original Third Man script with his hand written notes, to letters between producers and writers. This lent a fascinating insight into the behind the scenes world and workings of the 1950s film industry. The museum exudes a passion for cinema which is palpable and moving. I would 100% recommend for anyone interested in film, history, or bothL!Written July 18, 2023
- lynngC3310ZQ0 contributionsExcellent trip for history & film lovers, & those who just want to learn. We were a family group of 6 & had the Cold War Tour & Third Man Museum trip with Gerhard. It was so interesting and you get to see and hear about important areas of Vienna. Gerhard who takes the tour & has created the Third Man Museum was excellent. It was so easy to arrange before we arrived in Vienna. I would highly recommend this tour. It’s learning about recent history of Vienna and then the Third Man Film. Thank you Gerhard.Written July 16, 2023

What a special and interesting experience. Not only about the movie, which I recommend to see before (but it's not required), but about Vienna in the 20th Century, from before WW2 to some decades later. True documental evidence and memorabilia about those years, and knowledge I found unique and memorable.
I have been to many museums in Vienna, and seeing The Third Man Museum, in hindsight, made a more indelible memory, because more than a run of the mill museum for my collection of tourist visits in all the great cities, this feels like a labor of love and becomes so unique, and memorable. It is not large in extension but it is all very condensed, so be prepared to take your time, move slowly, and taste all the different nuances that you are being shown... while this lasts, because I don't know how they can make it sustainable with this price...

We arranged for a tour of the Third Man Museum as well as a private full day walking tour of Vienna with Gerhard during our free day there, and had a wonderful time that we'll never forget!
The depth and breadth of Gerhard's Third Man movie paraphernalia, as well as his knowledge of the intrigues of postwar Vienna, are truly amazing. Gerhard is friendly, honest and engaging. However he is not afraid to discuss the treatment of Jews during that time, and part of the museum's exhibits deals with that sad topic in a sensitive but clear way.
During our private walking tour Gerhard took us to see the newly renovated Judenplatz Museum, the Hapsburgs' Imperial Crypt, and many other off-the-beaten track sights. Of course we stopped for strudel and coffee at an authentic Viennese coffee house as well.
If you plan to be in Vienna we highly recommend visiting the Third Man Museum and perhaps taking a walking tour of Vienna with Gerhard. A unique and rewarding experience.

The museum captures the excellence of a film that I originally saw as a child and have enjoyed many times over 70 years. The rooms cleverly surrounds the visitor with the Vienna associated with the film. We visited as part of a particularly special birthday holiday in Vienna. Very recommended.

Great museum. Totally surprised by this museum. Visited with my wife and adult son last Saturday and we all loved it. We got to meet the couple who built the museum who were passionate about The Third Man and it’s connection with Vienna. We are museum buffs and have visited museums all over Europe and although small compared to the bigger museums it packs so much memorabilia into the three buildings it is just as enjoyable. Great layout and story telling about the movie. Although not required I’d recommend watching The Third Man before going. I hadn’t watched it in 15 years and was able to rent it online. It really is a great film and this museum does a great job of showcasing it!

I loved everything about this amazing little museum! If you are a fan of The Third Man movie this is a MUST. The amount of items that Gerhard and his wife have curated from the movie is astonishing! Posters, scripts, pictures, letters, memos, etc. They have the actual zither used for the soundtrack! They have set up several vignettes to re-enact certain scenes. Gerhard gave us a private tour and it was just fabulous. Not only is he an expert on every detail of the movie but he is also quite the historian. The museum is also an education on post-war Vienna that we found fascinating. I really cannot say enough about this special museum that is clearly a labor of love for Gerhard and his wife. I am so happy we were able to have this experience and encourage anyone visiting Vienna to go to The Third Man Museum!!

We took this fascinating tour with Gerhard our first few hours in Vienna and we are so glad we did!! It was a great way to get familiar with the city while learning about the history of Cold War Vienna. Gerhard is so knowledgeable about his city and about the movie that inspired the tour, "The Third Man." It was a delight to spend 2.5 hours with him and to end the tour at his amazing museum. We highly recommend this experience!!

This tour, which takes you beneath the streets and buildings of Vienna, is definitely worth doing. The general prejudice that all olfactory senses are offended by a bad smell is not true. Even if it doesn't smell like perfume, it is very easy to bear.
Tip: Don't start this tour wearing flip-flops or sandals; you will walk over wet areas, but you will never be in the water.
It is well worth seeing what is beneath Vienna.

Great fun. Guide was full bilingual (I guessed Australian- no Austrian!)
Excellent n atmospheric section on the film and excellent section on most post war Vienna, some wartime Vienna.
Clip from the film was hard to hear (poor audio) but again atmospheric old timey feel.
I’ve seen n appreciated the movie. I give the museum 5 stars. My wife doesn’t recall seeing the movie but still gives museum 4 stars.

This museum was nothing short of incredible. Am a huge fan of Graham Greene as well as the movie "The Third Man" AND the television show with Michael Rennie of the same name. First of all, the people who run the museum have obviously invested a great deal of resources as well as their time and energy and love of the subject matter. Throughly enjoyed the visit. Seeing a short film clip from the movie with the then-current projector was a joy. Another aspect of the museum is a magnificent portrayal of Vienna in pre, WW II, and post WWII. Thoroughly enjoyed the pictures, explanations, and many displayed newspapers, magazine articles, and other documents. If you are in Vienna on a Saturday, you really must visit this museum, which is an incredibly short walk from the Karlsplatz Metro (subway) station. Wow. I can hear the zither playing now. When I get home, I'll see The Third Man again with a much, much renewed appreciation of it. WOW.

If you are an Orson Welles fan like me then you can't go to Vienna without checking out the Third Man Museum. Of all the Third Man stuff I did in Vienna, this was the best. The owners of the museum have done a beautiful job that is obviously a labor of love. I'm not going to spoil any of the surprises with this review. Suffice to say they have every piece of memorabilia associated with this film you will ever want to see, and the Cold War content is superb. I picked up a little Third Man theme music box in the gift shop and I love to annoy people with it.
