About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- monicaeT3579HH0 contributionsHigh price, little infoIt was probably one of the least informative cycling tours we have done. We would have loved to get more history or “stories” from our guide, other than name of building and building year.Written September 29, 2024
- Peterpeebles0 contributionsGreat business, despite having to postpone ride due to floodsI had cycled from Budapest to Vienna in May, and booked to cycle from Vienna to Passau in mid September. Due to the forecast storms and consequent floods, when I arrived at the store I asked if I could postpone my ride until next spring. The staff were extremely helpful, understood my concerns and disappointment, and wanted to ensure satisfaction. I am now planning to ride the Danube next May. The staff could not do more!! Having already cycled with them in May 2024, I can thoroughly recommend this business - good equipment and great staff. I’m looking forward to using them again!!Written September 25, 2024
- shannonsB3007PD0 contributionsWachau winery visitThis was the BEST tour. We had a private guide, Marco, who made the trip. He was so easy to be with all day and tailored everything to what we wanted. The wineries were beautiful and delicious! We were not able to take the boat ride on the Danube due to the recent flooding which was disappointing but we visited the Melk Abbey instead. He stopped at several small stops on the way for pictures and sightseeing. In all it was a perfect day!Written September 24, 2024
- B1356CGjiml0 contributionsGorgeous Vienna! Our guide, Marcelo, gave us an outstanding tour of the hi-lites of Vienna. The bikes were in excellent condition and we had no problem navigating a very busy city. District 1 & 2 parks, the Danube Canal, and palaces were featured on the bike ride. Marcelo’s deep knowledge at every stop added a rich flavour to seeing many parts of beautiful Vienna for the first time. This is a must adventure for anyone who is visiting the city!Written September 22, 2024

A fabulous al fresco lunch stop, and rounded out with a 90 min boat ride on the Danube. Marco was a delightful and knowledgable guide. We had a great group of folks, which made the day special. Not normly not a "group tour" person, but glad I pushed my envelope. Highly recommended!!!Written August 28, 2024

- globalALS0 contributionsProfessional, Well-Organized, and Relaxing Day out of the CityOn balance, this was an excellent tour: well-organized, well-explained by the guide (Marco), and full of amazing wine, architecture, and food. Directions to the pick-up spot were easy to follow, and Marco was there to greet us on arrival. We traveled in a group of eight (plus Marco), in a very comfortable Mercedes passenger van. (Note: it was very warm when we visited Vienna, but Marco was incredible in keeping the van very cool and inviting throughout the day.) During our drive (approximately 1 hour from Vienna), Marco explained a lot to us (using an excellent microphone and speaker so that everyone could hear), about the wine region, the history, and how the varietals had subtle differences. The two wineries we visited were picturesque, inviting, and INSTAGRAMable. Marco was great in his explanations of each wine, eliciting our comments, and answering any questions we had along the way. For lunch, Marco took us to a traditional "heuriger": essentially a wine restaurant with picnic-style lunch. Most of the people surrounding us were locals or Austrians on holiday. It was a wonderful way to experience Austrian culture outside of Vienna, and sample more wines (and traditional cuisine). My wife is a vegetarian, and even she was able to find delicious choices on the menu. After lunch, we took a beautiful cruise along the Danube for approximately one hour. It was pleasant, relaxing, and an opportunity to enjoy some sites outside of Vienna in a very chill atmosphere. The boat had indoor and outdoor tables, with A/C, and a full menu (in case anyone was still hungry after lunch!) At the conclusion of the boat ride, Marco met us and drove home, but made quick reference to the Melk Abbey. (Note: the fine print of the tour mentions this but I didn't pay attention to it until we got there. The tour of Melk Abbey only takes place in the winter months. I'm not sure why, but the Abbey tour is not part of the summer experience.) We returned to Vienna approximately 9 hours after our original departure, and had a pleasant experience. Again, Marco was an awesome, personable tour guide and driver, and I would recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for an outside-of-Vienna experience for a day trip, who enjoys dry white wines.Written August 12, 2024

This trip was a great balance of free time to explore and group timed segments. I also appreciated that it was a small group (only 8 people, plus our guide) which made it less hectic. We had a wonderful time with our group exploring the wachau valley wineries. They really made it fun. Our tour guide Paolo was good but not great. He should definitely be better trained in the maintenance of the bikes. We ended up riding in the dark and he did not know how to turn my husbands’s light on. The bike store manager where we picked up the bikes was AWFUL. One of our riders got a flat( no one’s fault but it took over an hour for him to come the five miles to replace the inner tube Thus why the guide needs to learn to care for the bikes and why we had to ride in the dark. On arriving back at the bike shop he REFUSED to let my husband use the WC. This was unacceptable and his rudeness was not called for. The lunch was advertised as 13 euros yet guide charged us 25 euros in cash. Lunch should be included in price. The actual wine tasting was fun. The first winery and vintner was exceptional. The composition of group was what made the tour. The tour operator has much to improve on when it comes to customer service.

Hello Lynn,
Thank you for taking the time to write this feedback, it is truly much appreciated.
Your tour had an unfortunate combination of circumstances where it was impossible for Paulo to fix the flat tire on the spot. Our guides are trained to fix Puctures where the holes are small. However, in your case the tire was ripped which could not be fixed by Paulo. Therefore the mechanic had to come to repair the damages. This took too long since he was somewhere else fixing bikes. Lunch is not included in the tour and costs €13 each. Since you are a couple he charged you €26.
The toilet in the shop in Krems is not open for customers since we are renovating at the moment which renders the toilet not operational at the moment.
I hope to have clarified some points of concern.
Best regards from Vienna Explorer.

I was a bit unsure how drinking wine and driving a bike would work, but it perfect combination of both. This is a great way for active people to see a portion of the Wachau Valley. The bike ride was fairly easy and flat with absolutely stunning scenery. Both of the wineries we visited had really great tasting wines and impressive wine makers that provides some great stories and narration. Our tour stopped in Durnstein for lunch which allowed for some free time to explore the village. Lunch was not included but the tour guide arranged a great meal with a local restaurant, which included a free wine. The tour guide was from Australia but really understood the wine of the Wachau Valley and provided great insights on the geography throughout our journey. This isn’t a cheap tour, but it felt like it was worth the money given the quality of the people and wine. Also prepared for a long day, but it’s completely worth it.

We wanted to try something a little different and happened upon this trip. We had a fantastic little tour group that was a veritable United Nations! Our group members hailed from all parts of the world and got along famously!
All transportation is covered from the Vienna Explorer home base in Vienna and we travelled by U-Bahn and then the Train to Krems on the Danube where we picked up our bikes. These bikes were so very comfortable and of excellent quality! We cycled approximately 15-20 km and stopped several times for some history lessons of the area and pictures!
The cycling is along pathways parallel to Danube and through the vineyard towns. This is not a difficult cycle tour and so worth it. I’m not a wine connoisseur at all (more of a gin and tonic kinda gal) but it was an adventure! We stopped at 3 different wineries a d probably tasted 12-15 varieties (I lost count).
We had tons of laughs, had a chance to swim in the Danube (don’t forget to bring a swimsuit as we did so we dipped our feet into the river instead) and learned alot of the Wachau Valley and the history behind the area. Our tour guide, Tomas was fantastic and has endless knowledge of the area!
Overall well worth it and a must if you want to see something beyond the Inner Stadt!

This tour allows you to see beyond Vienna. I really enjoyed biking from each village to the next to eat and drink wine. It was not overly strenuous and we had people of all ages in my group. Do not worry about getting left behind. Your tour guide won’t leave you behind and more than likely neither will the other bikers with you. I went solo and did not feel left out. We tasted wines from two wineries. The route to the biking spot was very appealing but it took awhile about 1 1/2 hours. I suggest bringing about 20 euros cash to spend at lunch. Additionally, it was a very hot day when I went so sunscreen is essential as is water. The lunch was wonderful and I got the mixed/fried vegetables (highly recommend) with a fried egg. My tour guide was very knowledgeable about Vienna and gave me directions on how to get back to my lodging. I definitely recommend this tour and I think a tour like this will make your Austrian experience much more immersive. After seeing the country side and talking to many travelers I wish I would have had time to visit Salzburg!
Hope this helps. :)

My wife and I had an amazing time biking through the gorgeous Wachau valley region. Our group was small, only 7 people in total, and our guide, Tomas, was incredibly kind, funny, and informative as we made our journey. The tour included a visit to just two wineries, but honestly this felt like plenty considering the amount of wine offered at each one, and all of the other sites along the way. Tomas and the winemakers we encountered offered lots of context for the wines we were tasting, which really helped me better appreciate the subtleties in flavor and body imparted by the environment and processing. Definitely bring money for lunch; it was at a traditional Austrian place in a small town on the Danube, and the food was delicious and affordable. Don't worry too much about having enough stamina or bike riding skill, I hadn't ridden a bike in over 5 years and found it very easy going.

The ride was amazing as well as our guide. The bicycles were in excellent condition and were very comfortable. The wineries were great with great ambiance. We stopped frequently for pictures. The ride took two paths in a round trip tour through the Valley. The tour company took care of train transportation to and from The Valley from a convenient location near the city center and train station.

A gorgeous way to spend a day out of the city and in the countryside. Highly recommend. Tips for those who book:
1. Check your bikes before leaving the bike shop (including the gears). Some folks in our group had bike issues that could have been resolved before setting out for the day. I personally had no issues, but a bike with issues can dampen your experience.
2. Bring a small bag to carry your stuff. You really just need a refillable water bottle, a camera, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sweater. Swimsuit and towel if you choose to swim. There's a rack for your stuff on the bike which makes the journey so much more enjoyable (not having to wear your pack on your back the whole day).
3. Get the lunch that the company recommends. It's an additional cost, but everyone on the tour gets it. Plus, it's fun to meet other travelers during your trip.
4. Remember to bring cash to tip your tour guide at the end of the day.
5. Enjoy!

Leisurely bike trip this time. We were the slower ones, although we would rather have shorter stops and be on the move more. The itinerary reportedly depends a lot on the composition of the group. On reflection, we would have liked to explore organising this ourselves, renting bikes out from their very good cycle shop in Krems.

The scenery is absolutely stunning. Our guide provided interesting information along the outbound route. The wineries we visited well represented the wine from the Wachau valley. My input to the company is that after the second winery, the guide (also the lead of the bike pack) went “hell bent” speed back to town for the return train. Which means we didn’t see the scenery on the return ride. And then when we returned, we found out we had to wait 45mi a to leave! Could have used a slower pace and a shorter wait at the end. Maybe even shorten the route to ease up on the pace so we can see and hear more about the area.

Hi there!
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We are very glad you enjoyed the tour with our guide. In response to the riding pace, our guides try to assess the ability of the group early on during the tour so they can plan on whether to do an extended route or not. Our guide likely judged that the group was of good ability and decided to ride an extended route. Our guides are experienced and mostly judge the pace correctly. However, we apologise if the pace was a little too much and we'll notify our guides to be aware of this.
We would love to welcome you back to the Wachau valley some time in the future.
Best regards,
Vienna Explorer

There were three family members who participated on this tour. Bikes were not suitably sized to fit one of the shorter participants resulting in a fall. No tutorial was offered on the safe use of the bikes. Halfway through the tour we were informed that we could no longer participate because we were slightly slower than other tour participants. No one forewarned us that we needed to increase our pace before kicking us off the tour; we had no opportunity to make adjustments and speed up, or we would have. We were placed in a dangerous position by having to find our own way back to the bike shop at the orieginating city without any consideration for our safety. We communicated with another participant who proceeded on the rest of the tour and several participants expressed their displeasure about the situation with the guide, Taz, and asked that we be allowrd to continue, which was refused. They then felt pressure to be speedy so they wouldn't also be kicked off the tour. I requested all of our tour costs be reimbursed for this excursion. We were denied. The way we were treated warrants a full refund. While we ended up okay and unharmed in this situation, I do not want something similar to happen to others who have put their trust in Vienna Explorer. It was dangerous to leave us stranded and should never be allowed to happen again.

Dear Zanny,
Thank you for taking your time to write this review. I understand your frustration getting denied to continue the tour, because you were unable to ride the group pace. I am sure that a lot of potential customers will read this review, because everyone only read the best and the worst reviews. I see it as chance to point out what this tour is about:
Zanny: Bikes were not suitably sized to fit one of the shorter participants.
We have all sizes of bikes including kids bikes (btw. in 13 years operating this tour we never had to deny a kid from continueing the tour), so I am sure you had a suitable bike for you. We always hand out the bikes so it is the perfect fit to the rider.
Zanny: No tutorial was offered on the safe use of the chain saws...sorry bicycles
We expect that our customers, who booked a bike tour, can ride a bike. The bike ride is about 26 kilometers about 16 miles on flat terrain with the longest stratch of 25 min. The pace of the tour is slow, we try to enjoy the scenerary and always cater to the slowest rider.
For example we have 6,5 km (4 miles) to the first stop and we plan around 40 min (excl. a 10 min break) to reach this point. That is average of 4,5 km/h (2.7 m/h). Yes, we have some traffic obstacles, but this almost walking speed.
Your review sounds like we want to make money of people, who cannot keep up...We want to make sure that people who cannot ride a bike (even it is clearly advertized as a bike tour) are ruining the experience of other travellers who actually have average biking skills. And we point that out clearly before we start the tour in Vienna.
Please dont get put off this review, if you have average biking skills and just want to have good day in the most beautiful area of Austria.
Please for all the people, who are really insecure on a bike call or email us first to ask if your biking skills are advanced enough to join the tour.
Taz is an amaizing guide and acted in the will of the company and the other group members.
