I really enjoyed my day-trip to Durnstein and Melk!

We were a mixed group of English and Spanish speakers and our friendly guide managed to switch languages impressively. He was very well informed and told some fascinating stories throughout the day.

It rained consistently throughout the day but it was still great. It was beautiful to watch the thunderstorm rolling in across the Danube hills!

Wandering around charming Durnstein was relaxing and picturesque. We had about an hour, with great views and a few coffee shops, souvenir shops and wine cellars open to browse. I appreciated having free reign to explore at my own speed.

I was happy the boat ride went ahead despite the poor weather. Beautiful views and I had a reasonably priced delicious lunch. The journey was quiet and comfortable, about an hour.

Melk Abbey is beautiful with impressive gardens. We had an hour or so before the English guided tour, which we spent wandering the gardens and smaller buildings. Again beautiful views. We spent around 3 hours there overall.

Overall a well paced, interesting and picturesque excursion. Would recommend to anyone. Thank you!

We were lucky: the weather was perfect - cool and sunny. Our guide was excellent. I enjoyed the stops we made along the way to the Abbey: Durnstein, St. Michael, and Kress. Very picturesque towns; gives you an idea of life in these towns along the Danube River bank. We had to wait for our turn to tour the interior of the Abbey. Photo taking was not allowed inside the Abbey.

Lovely day,

The time spent in abbey was unforgettable. Having a boat trip along the Danube river, surrounded by stunning landscapes, was something unreal. We had some free time to spend in Melk, a picturesque city, with a rich history. Melk is well worth visiting. The Melk Abbey itself is impressing. Seeing the old library with thousands of books, where monks were allowed to work only in silence, makes your jaw drop. Highly recommend!!!

I booked this trip without any input other than what I saw and read on trip advisor. We enjoyed it very much and would definitely recommend it. Be prepared for some self guidance during the interim stop in Durnstein. Just a few minutes to walk into town, grab a coffee and then head back for the coach. Interesting place due to historic significance related to Richard the Lionheart.

Next we headed for Spitz for the 1 1/2 hour trip up the river. While you’re are advised that lunch can be had in Melk, I strongly recommend eating on the cruise to Melk. This was mentioned in a previous trip advisor review and it was spot on. The food was wonderful and the view from the boat was magnificent. We enjoyed a bottle of local Reisling on the way.

Once in Melk we had about an hour to walk around the town and do some shopping before we started our tour of the Abbey. (Note: Be prepared for a hike down and back up from the town center for shopping). It wasn’t a problem for us but if you have bad knees or get out of breath easily, you may want to reconsider.

The tour of the Abbey was interesting and the artifacts there are incredible. The most impressive part is the church sanctuary itself. Just an incredible thing to behold. Unfortunately, no pictures are allowed inside the tour except for one section where you are outside overlooking the town and river.

So we would definitely recommend this excursion and we had a wonderful day!

Today we took the MELK ABBEY AND DANUBE VALLEY tour with VIENNA SIGHTSEEING TOURS.

Our tour had 70 people on it and as we walked around at our various stops, with such a big group it was extremely difficult, if not impossible, to hear the tour guide as he gave his commentary. Unfortunately this meant that unless you were at the front of the group a lot of the passengers received absolutely no commentary whatsoever. I am at a loss to understand why Vienna sightseeing tours didn't issue audio sets as other companies do.

We have taken many tours while touring Europe but have never been on a tour with such a big group. I felt very sorry for the tour guide because it was very difficult for him to manage such a large group. Obviously Vienna Sightseeing tours are happy with their large group policy however I would like to suggest that they advise customers that the tour is such a large one which will then allow them to decide if this suitable to their needs before booking it.

Even though this tour had a great itinerary, a lot of it was lost because of the large numbers. Had we known we were going to be on an 8 hour tour with 70 passengers we would not have taken the tour. Unfortunately definitely not the best tour we've taken ☹

I have written this review to forewarn other travellers before they commit to the tour. I wish someone had warned me beforehand

Dear Dinnylea, thank you for your feedback. We are really sorry that you did not enjoy the tour that much. Unfortunately, we had a bottleneck with the tour guides on this tour. We are already working on this problem. We put special emphasis on good customer service and take the feedback of our customers very serously. Again, we are very sorry about your disappointed experience with our company. Kind regards, Lisa Frühbauer

Get your International drivers license before traveling and rent a car to visit the Melk Abbey. The abbey itself is absolutely amazing. Driving back to Vienna drive along the Danube instead of on the highway. Be sure to stop in Durnstein and visit Domain Wachau, a fabulous winery. Stop in Krems for an afternoon coffee to complete you trip.

It is probably not the company's fault that this is not the tour we thought it was. We thought it would be mainly a day on a boat that included a stop at the famous Melk Abbey.

That's not what it is. It's a LOT of bus-riding (about six hours in total), with a 1.5 hour boat ride and an abbey tour in the middle.

The boat ride was lovely, and the abbey was outstanding. You do not approach the abbey from the river, so that photo shot you're looking at isn't one you're actually going to get a chance to take.

Had I truly understood what I was signing up for (again, probably my fault rather than the website's) I would have preferred to have taken the train than ride the bus. In fact, we ended up catching the train from Melk back to Vienna (which cost about 15 euros and took half an hour) rather than ride the bus for three or four more hours back to the city. This was an excellent decision.

It sounds like a lot of people thoroughly enjoyed the tour; we just weren't two of them.

Dear customer, thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that there was a misunderstanding concerning the boat ride. We put great emphasis on providing a great service and it is too bad that the tour did not come up to your expectations. Nevertheless, we hope the rest of your time in Austria was nice. Group size: Full double decker bus
Activity: Low to medium
Overall verdict: Great day out! Highly recommend.

Personal anecdote:
In any large tour group there are always people who rush to the front and those who wait patiently for others. I fall into the latter group. Be aware that you will not be allowed to change seats on the bus between the multiple short legs of the trip. The reason for this is unclear. They enforce this to the point that some couples got split up for the whole day, while there were empty seats due to late returners (the same people who rush to the front).
Don’t be polite in the morning and just get the best seat you can.

My husband and I took this tour in September. This was not an English only tour, which surprised me. Our tour guide had to translate everything he said into 3 different languages, while super impressive, made it really hard to pay attention.

The boat cruise was nice and we had an opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine on board.

When we got to Melk we only had 30 minutes before we had to gather for the Abbey tour, which made eating lunch a little rushed.

The actual tour of the Abbey was amazing! We had a guide from the Abbey who was so eloquent and informative. We really enjoyed this part.

Overall it wasn’t a bad tour, we just feel like it would have been better value to drive ourselves and spend the night in Melk.

If you really do not need to visit a Milk Abbey, as a religious place, and if you are not a big fun of boat trips down the river, do not take this tour. On the other hand, it is a nice place to take some fresh air and to relax after a busy Vienna.
First of all, do not be confused where the tour starts. Just find a rose rabbit statue near the Opera (on the same side). This is a place a tour operator (not a bus!) will wait for you.
And now just some small useful tips. A first stop will be in the small town of Krems. You can not do and see much during 20 minutes. So, go by yourself down the main small street of this cute town, look around and drink a cup of good coffee. Then, if you are going to purchase a couple of bottles of a famous local Wachau wine - do it here! There will be no another place to do it during this tour.
A boat trip is pretty boring and nothing special will be seen around. Do not eat at the boat, just drink coffee or wine, if you need to. The best place to eat will be at Milk Abbey - you will have approximately an hour of free time. It will be enough to eat in Melk abbey restaurant (ask your tour guide, to be sure you will have this free hour). Very good restaurant and fast service, so you will enjoy it.
An Abbey itself is very beautiful and impressive outside, but inside they converted it into a modern museum. If you previously used to be in the old abbeys, then do not look for the spirit of old times here. Library is very impressive, but only if it is your first one of this kind.
