Worth the experience

The combo tour is very convenient. The first half of the day was Berchtesgaden and the salt mines. Only 30 minutes to wander around Berchtesgaden itself. I would have liked to spend more time exploring the town and if you want to get a quick glance around it's not bad. The mine tour is very interesting. There is an option for not sliding if you don't want to.

Once we returned from the first part the Sound of Music tour was next. If you are here in the winter time I recommend booking this separate as when you return to Mirabell Garden it is dark and the garden is not well lit. However the tour itself is fun, informative, and offers some amazing countryside views. Well worth doing it you have a short amount of time in Salzburg.

Enjoyable

Enjoyed both the tours. There was ample of time to have lunch while awaiting the next tour. The salt mines was a smaller group hence it was easier to control. The SOM was large however credit to Mr. Antonio for doing an amazing job for both the tours. If he is your guide, your tour would be fun filled, guaranteed!

A Good Day Out

A really enjoyable day. A visit to the Salt Mines first, followed by the Sound of Music tour in the afternoon. Good guides and excellent coach drivers. A good way to see some of the countryside too.

Good day of touring Salzburg

This wasn’t a bad tour (the Sound of Music), but more information going into it would have been helpful. At the end of the tour we were shown a video excerpt from the Sound of Music that talked about the filming locations. Viewing this at the start of the tour would have been helpful.

We really enjoyed the salt mine tour! It was our young daughter’s favorite part of the tour. Learning the history of how important salt was to the region was fascinating.

Just a great day in Austria

If you have a couple of days in Salzburg this is a great way to spend one of them. The morning salt mines tour includes a stop at an area where you can get a good view of the infamous Eagle's Nest. The tour guide did a very good job of explaining the background of the area and the fact that it was used extensively by the SS for casual time. Things like guard stations and bunkers are still visible. The tour of the salt mines was interesting and informative also. Kids will like it because you get a ride on a small train through the tunnels, a barge across an underground lake and a couple of slides from level to level in the mine just as the original miners would have done. The only thing I was not pleaased with was that all of the dialogue was done here by recordings instead of the guide. That made the trip a little impersonal.
After the mine, we stopped at a little village, Berchtesgaden, where we could stroll the old town or have a little lunch at the tour guides favorite restaurant, the Golden Bear (Goldener Baer). It was a nice break, the food was good and the service quick. It got us prepared for the trip back to Salsburg and the afternoon Sound of Music Tour. There is not much time between the two.
The Sound of Music tour was a hoot. We had such a good time learning about the movie and seeing the sights that were in the film (not to mention the compulsory verse or two of "Doe, a deer..."). We had a total of four stops but many more drive-bys of things that I had seen the day before touring on our own but did not recognize until the guide mentioned the tie-in. The highlights were the church where the wedding was held (in the movie) in Mondsee, and the actual gazebo that has been moved to a safe site at the Schloss Hellbrunn. The scenery in the lake district was phenomenal.
I would recommend this combo package or one of the others that includes the Sound of Music as your tastes dictate. There is a fair degree of walking. Panorama Tours did a very good job but be aware that the bus can load up to half an hour early so if you want to get a good seat with a window or near an exit you should get there before that advertised starting time.

Worth it!

The salt mines I could’ve skipped. I would suggest just doing the Sound of Music tour which is why I scored this as a 4 on the scale. The salt mines were average, but it was a German tour guide so I had to use a translator radio thing. Not a big deal, but my device, as well as others in my group, were not working, so I couldn’t understand what was going on or the information being shared. A lot of a light show with dramatic music than I’d anticipated.

On top of that, I’m not sure if the tour for the Eagle’s Nest excursion was overbooked or what. Apparently there was a full bus for the Eagle’s Nest, and since we had room on our salt mine bus, their spillover came with us to Berchtesgaden Salt Mines. So, we had to take a detour and take them all up to drop them off at their site. Then we went to our excursion and had 80 minutes (which is what it is for everyone I was told). Then we had to go back up the mountain to pick up the Eagle’s Nest people. After that, we went and spent about 45 minutes in the town of Berchtesgaden, which was totally fine by me, I just didn’t realize that was a part of the tour. We were back by 2:00pm for the Sound of Music Tour though.

Christina was my tour guide on the Sound of Music Tour and she was fantastic! By the end, we really were all freely singing along to the soundtrack and she was so knowledgeable. I learned many facts I hadn’t heard before! I smiled most of the tour and left in a good mood. I wouldn’t change anything about that part of the day.

So glad we decided to do a trip to the salt mines, totally different to my idea of salt mining, I had visions of open spaces with mounds of salt, not going into a cave and seeing water lakes and learning how they extract the salt, was so interesting.
