- Admorris95970 contributionsWhat a great experience! My family and I had so much fun on the Lava Tour. The horses are all very calm, so you can just sit and enjoy the ride. The guides were very competent and so friendly. One of the guides explained a lot about the lava fields. My daughter's guide taught her how to ride in an Icelandic style.Written October 7, 2024
- Coleen W0 contributionsHappy HorseridingWonderful experience, delightful informative staff, beautiful scenery & gentle sturdy small Icelandic horses. Highly recommend 🌸Written October 3, 2024
- Clare D0 contributionsDelightful experienceVery professional outfit. The short pre ride video was very clear and instructive. The guide was excellent, with fluent English. The Icelandic horses are captivating, as is the landscape. It was lovely to be able to experience the tolt gait of these special creatures. You were able to pick the type of horse you wanted to ride: calm or more spirited, and separate off into a walking or tolting group of riders. Would recommend.Written September 25, 2024
- F636VUjenniferd0 contributionsHorsebacking through the Lava FieldsMy sister and I really enjoyed this adventure. It gave us a great opportunity to view one of the largest lava fields Im Iceland while learning about the unique Icelandic Horse breed. Horses were beautiful and very well trained. Company provided all appropriate clothing for the excursion.Written September 21, 2024
- nicolecP8384VR0 contributionsGreat for Riders of All Abilities! This tour was perfect from start to finish. They worked with us to pick us up from our hotel that was not originally listed as an option, and transport to the farm was easy. From there, they showed a video about how to work with the horses and basic riding instruction before they suited us up with boots, helmets and optional weather gear (this tour didn't cancel for the light rain we encountered). The best part was that the instructors were very attentive to riding ability. Our group split up a few different times based on those abilities, so I got to experience a faster pace and different route with my small group, while others continued on a leisurely pace. The guides were wonderfully attentive, took photos for us, and knew plenty of facts about the horses and landscape. Highly recommend this tour!!!Written September 19, 2024
- Lornac0100 contributionsBrilliant experienceThis was a real highlight of our trip to Iceland for me (and my non horse loving teenager liked it too!!). The horses were lovely, everything I had read about the sweet nature of these horses was true. They were fab to ride, the stables well kept and the staff kind and helpful. We had the pick up and it was on time. The ride was about 90 mins all in all and goes through ancient lava fields on well kept trails. I joined the faster group — we tolted which I had so wanted to do, very different gait and comfortable once you get it. Amazing experience- highly recommend 😀Written September 13, 2024
- AnneB1070 contributionsLovely horses, great guides, magnificent environmentI booked this tour on a whim for the day of our arrival in Iceland. We were tired, jet lagged, and cold. I almost canceled. Thank goodness we didn’t. The horses are wonderful. The 2 hour ride was perfect for beginners. Yes, it was cold, rainy, and crazy windy. But what an introduction to the landscape! It was a great experience all around. Absolutely will do it again if we are fortunate enough to come back.Written September 7, 2024
- ivyj7760 contributionsWould come againFantastic, the staff were lovely, very passionate about the wellbeing of their horses. They explained very well how to ride a horse and pickup was on time. We even got to feed the horses after!Written September 5, 2024
- 564joanm0 contributionsPlenty of time in the saddlePick up/drop-off ran smoothly at designated areas. Plenty of helpful highly-professional staff, abundant loaner equipment, and attention to safety/comfort of the horses. They accommodated different riding skills easily. Stopped in attractive place and assisted with photos taken with rider's own cameras. Never thought I'd say this but the ride was very long over terrain that didn't change... You'll need to ask for a guide to demonstrate the special Icelandic horse gait. (They won't do the fast special gait due to trail conditions.) I was in the low experience group and all we did was walk. Maybe the more advanced group got to do the special gait? Very well run and a good value.Written August 31, 2024
- Fiona K0 contributionsWhat an experience!I am so happy we did this excursion as it was absolutely brilliant. As a beginner, the horses were easy to ride and well trained. The staff at the center and on the ride were experienced, accommodating and really helpful. We rode out into the beautiful countryside and it was awesome. For those who wanted to go faster, we separated into two groups near the end. Thank you for a special afternoon.Written August 30, 2024
- georgemO5195DB0 contributionsAwesome Horseback Riding TourThis is one of the most spectacular horseback riding tours I've ever been on, the breathtaking natural beauty of this country is incredible, and the Icelandic Horses are even better! Having great guides definitely made the experience even more memorable! I highly recommend checking it out if you're planning on making a trip to Iceland at some point, well worth every penny, and then some.Written August 25, 2024
- J9543JHannam0 contributionsAwesome experienceIt was a great time, I was an Adventurous Beginner who was able to tolt my first time on a horse, with my partner who is an experienced rider. Loved that this ride offered more than just a walk. They had a bunch of horses of varying sizes and were able to accommodate everyone.Written August 16, 2024
- Stephany M0 contributionsDo it. You wont regret itJust fabulous all round. Horses are really well raised and cared for. Guides are relaxed and don't show any stress. Photo opportunity availableWritten August 5, 2024
- sparrino40 contributionsGreat experienceThis was a really special experience. The event was very organized and the horses were well mannered. I went with the "adventurous beginner" group and trotted for the first time! Definitely something I would do againWritten August 3, 2024
- Seaside211961600480 contributionsA true bucket list experience!Such a special experience. The Icelandic horses are so beautiful and sweet tempered. The facility is very organized and comfortable. The staff at Ishestar are all highly professional and kind. They are very careful and patient in order to give you and the horses the best experience. I had sweet Sproti. The Viking tour was intermediate /advanced and about 3 hours across gorgeous landscape with lupines in full bloom. What I loved most is that the care of the horses is exceptional and they get plenty of time to roam freely out on the mountain side.Written July 21, 2024

I was so excited to spend time with Icelandic horses and try tolting. This experience did not disappoint. I appreciated that the guides allowed the group to split into two groups so that my husband could decide to keep it at a walk but I could go with a faster group and try the other gaits. We especially appreciated the women at Ishestar who allowed us to come in spite of the Iceland women’s strike happening that day. They went above and beyond for us.

I did the Viking tour and fortunately I was the only one that day and I got a private tour! The staff was very welcoming and my guide, Elisa, made the tour very fun and informative about Icelandic horses and the Iceland as a whole. I would 100% recommend booking any tour with Ishestar

June 19th 2024 We recommend Islenski Horseback riding over Ishetar.
Ishtar will not refund tours for beginning riders when the W EATHER is UNSAFE.
It is raining/windy/unsafe to ride Wednesday June 19th from 10am-12noon. Ishetar had no other rides available later in the day and we couldn’t reschedule because our flight home leaves in the am June 20th.

I had such a great time here. They did a great job of preparing us and finding out about our experience riding to match us with an appropriate horse. Although being with the horses and riding was my favourite part, the landscape was also phenomenal. The leader of our group shared very interesting stories with me (my horse was second in line) about Icelandic horses, the farm, and the natural environment. We had lots of time to spend time with our horse after the ride, take pics, etc.

I booked the Viking Tour for my daughter who is an experienced rider and she had a wonderful experience! She and one other rider went out with a guide for several hours on beautiful trails. The communication with the stable beforehand was excellent and the staff were wonderful. The facility was easy to get to from Reykjavik, very clean and organized, and the ponies seemed happy and well cared-for. So glad we chose Ishestar and would definitely do it again!

From what we can tell, the animals are treated very well here and the horses are well looked after. The three of us were lucky enough to be given a guided tour through the lava fields along with lots of interesting information about the horses. The tour was wonderful for us as beginners - despite the rain and wind. Our guide was very accommodating and we were even allowed to trot. The price is actually very high, but the tour was worth the money. The stable is not far from Reykjavik and can be reached quickly and easily by rental car.

Everything in the smallest detail exceeded my expectations.
First of all, from the very beginning you can feel that the horses are loved and cared for in this stable.
The staff - both reception and guides - are very friendly, calm but also professional.
It was my first time and I was taught the basics well and felt safe on horseback with the guides.
The trail is amazing, you go through lava fields and there are mountains all around.
It was great and after this experience I am even thinking of starting a new hobby!

This entire experience was incredible! My 8yr old daughter and myself went. We had assumed she wouldn't be able to ride alone, so she was quite nervous when she was brought her own horse to ride. The staff however was so positive and encouraging. They reassured her, reminded her how to hold the reins. During the ride our guide ended up having her next to her and they talked the whole way! At the end she let my daughter ride in all by herself, and now my daughter wants to go again!
Our other guide was fantastic about reminding us about riding tips (pull the reins to the right, stay to the right of the trail, lean back going downhill), telling us about the lava field, she also used our phones to take photos of us on the horses!

Such a lovely welcoming group of staff. From being greeted, to meeting the horses, being assigned a horse and the ride it was fantastic. Warm clothing of coveralls is provided however gloves need to be purchased.
The instructors were very knowledgable and I liked they split the ride for experience meaning those with more could go at a faster pace. Execellent horse, very lovely temperament. Would definitely recommend coming here to ride. There is a more experienced ride in the afternoon I didn’t know about, if I did I would have definitely joined! Thank you again!

Great experience. The staff was really nice, the horses seemed really well cared for. We all really enjoyed it. We split off with the faster group and got our fair share of trotting. I will say, it's more about the horse experience than the scenery, but that's fine. Just don't be disappointed that it's not the most scenic of your time in Iceland.
They had snowsuits you could wear if you weren't bundled up enough for the weather.
