    History Lesson
Interesting if you want to know about Vikings. Might not be interesting for young children as you follow with an audio guide. Has a small gift shop and area to dress up as a Viking.

    Saga Museum
We had under an hour before time to go to city walk tour. Saga Museum was across street from our hotel so we chose that. The tour takes 35 minutes. They have realistic looking wax figure exhibits and much history of Iceland from 870 ad to 1500s.

    Fun exhibit with great history!
Great look into Viking history in Iceland! It was a fun exhibit. You got to walk through and listen to an audioguide. At the end, we got to dress up as Vikings and it’s one of my favorite memories from the trip!

    Saga Museum Experience
We found this exhibition very interesting. The mannequins we of a very high quality and realistic, we even convinced ourselves they were actually moving but only realised later on that we were experiencing tremors from the volcanic activity which the area was experiencing. The museum has lockers for backpacks etc, and the interesting stories were related using earphones etc, plus each exhibit had the stories in writing as well. It tells the folk lore stories very well and is a potted history of early Iceland settlements by the vikings There is also a costume area where people can dress up in Viking costumes, and a very interesting film showing how the mannequins were sculpted using local people as the models Would recommend a visit here as an introduction to Icelands history. The stories are repeated by tour guides when you are exploring the island

    Proper Viking immersive experience
Located at the far end of the port area near bus stop 15. Doesn't look much from outside but surprisingly good inside. Admission was 3000 kr each (seniors), headphones included. Excellent waxworks and replicas of early Icelandic history tell the story of the people based on the collected Sagas dating from the 12th to 15th centuries. Useful background information for a visit to Iceland, as it talks about the first settlers, the rise of clans and the church, the Reformation, colonial power etc. A highlight is the chance to dress up in Viking clothes at the end! I won’t remember all the characters’ names, but I enjoyed listening to them!

    Disappointing and pricey
For the price this museum which looks into viking history in Iceland does not offer much and was over before I knew it! An audio guide is included which tends to pad out the experience. The individual exhibits are pretty good but there really is not a lot of them. You will not be missing out on much if you don't visit and Reykjavik has much better museums.

    Interesting Presentation of Icelandic History
In the Saga Museum, ensure that you get the complimentary headset and audioguide as you walk through the 17 exhibits which were dioramas of key moments in early Icelandic history. There are also signs in English next to each exhibit. It was quite dark which made taking photos a bit difficult. There were a few chairs to sit and a lot of kids were just sitting on the floor. It took me about 30 minutes to walk by all the exhibits. There is also a gift shop in the museum.

A fun combination of kitsch and real historical information.
Entertaining self guided audio tour of the early history of Iceland. Shows wax museum style scenes of events. Some of the scenes are very graphically violent. These might be inappropriate for younger children.

Meh, I wouldn't do it again.
Meh, very expensive to see wax figures and listen to recordings. It is also quite small. In hindsight I should have skipped it. I could have just read Wikipedia.

    Insight into Icelandic sagas
We spent about an hour at this museum. Although small, we enjoyed our visit, it is interesting to read about some of the Icelandic sagas.

Underwhelming and definitely not for kids
This museum is not appropriate for children under the age of approximately 8 years. There are depictions of bloody murders and hanging. The staff at the entrance did warn us of this, to be fair to them, but if you have young children then I would skip this. It’s a purely audio guided tour, some of the exhibits are very good (the human models are very life like) but unless you are super interested in early Icelandic history then you’ll probably leave disappointed given the cost.

    Overpriced and felt incomplete
Rather short for the price and does not include anything about the last 100yrs. The audio narration is quite good. The wax figures are ok but look very antiquated and didn't add much except for a couple of them

Early icelandic history on display, not sagas
Calling it a 'Saga museum' is a misnomer, it has nothing to do with the famous historical sagas, but it is a good illustration of early Icelandic history. Worth a visit, if you like history, but don't expect to see much about the Eddic characters or any other sagas in there.

    Interesting but rushed.
Interesting but the lines where in front of the exhibits and the audio tour is set for a specific amount of time at each exhibits. The staff should have spaces out the people and allowed more time between them. Then everyone would have enough time at each exhibit.

    Informative and fun
The scenes might not be worth it without the excellent narration. If you listen, you will learn a ton of cool history. We also had a blast with costumes and pics afterwards.

The Icelandic Saga museum has the most realistic wax models depicting real historical figures from the Settlement period or so, and from the Icelandic Sagas. Indeed, if you look carefully at the figure of Snorri Sturluson, he looks to be breathing as his chest moves up and down.

I enjoyed learning more about the sagas, and couple of names were familiar, like Erik the Red. Not sure how much this would appeal to kids tho. It's well presented as you have an audio which ties into the numbered plaques. It's easy to stop the narration if you want to read the plaque or take longer over an exhibit. Tho there doesn't seem to be a button to back track. And conveniently, chairs are distributed throughout the small exhibition space so you can linger over a narration before blasting onto the next.

Folk were pretty good about wearing masks, as there's no air flow through and it is rather confined and close. There was only one chap that seemed to think wearing his mask on his chin was acceptable, so I asked him nicely to wear the mask. I had to ask him twice, mind. As it was close and confined.

Tip: take your own ear phones as they'll readily plug into the audio device. The audio is about 30 minutes long. I was in for about an hour and a quarter and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Skip this and book the Caves of Hella Tour instead. This was a self guided audio tour and wax museum that gave a choppy history. The history was choppy and you a learn so much more in other places.

Definitely skip this and book the Caves of Hella tour where you have an expert guide and storyteller sharing history and answering questions.

I didn’t take a single photo. That’s speaks volumes to how unimpressed I was.

I mean it was really interesting and I did enjoy listening to the audio guide but 25€ per person for 30 min is a lot plus it didn't smell very good in the entire museum. But at the end you were able to try on some viking costumes. It was fun and I guess overall worth it but it's still too expensive in my opinion.

It takes less than an hour to go through and costs about $33 CAD. They give you an audio guide and you walk through looking at the tableaus as the stories are told. Lots of attention to detail on the clothing, though not all of it is 100% accurate. The gift shop is AMAZING, though. Handmade Viking articles, like dice and needles made of bone, glass beads, and metal implements like ear scoops. Worth it to skip the museum and just visit the gift shop, if you're already in the neighbourhood for Whales of Iceland. Absolute best gift shop of our whole trip.

Reykjavik has museums of different kinds, therefore, I was intrigued to learn more about sagas in the Saga Museum. The beginning was quite promising since an audioguide (and a headset to listen to it) is included in the entrance fee. However, the experience itself turned out to be only 40 minutes long, in addition, the museum seemed a bit old-fashioned in terms of graphical representation (even though the wax sculptures were very nice).
The souvenir store is quite lovely, too. Nevertheless, the exhibition is more about the early history of Iceland and how the first settlers created a society and governed it (in a slightly propagandist tone). At no point, there was a simple explanation of what is a saga, how they are divided, how they emerged, and why they are so essential in understanding the history of Iceland (and not only Iceland). Therefore, I left the museum feeling disappointed. There were many good ideas, as mentioned above, yet the performance was poor. Hence, an average result.

This was fun! You just listen to an audio tour and look at the dioramas. The audio was long compared to the amount of time it took to look at each scene. I would have liked more focus on early Icelandic history, which is what I expected from the title, but there was also a lot of post-Christian history. It's a bit kitschy but if you like kitsch and history you'll have a good time. The whole tour only takes about 30 minutes.

Located in the capital, this fascinating Viking museum offers you a unique experience to immerse yourself in the rich history of the Vikings, inspired by the ancient sagas. Here you can admire wax figures representing prominent Vikings, while telling you significant accounts of their time. In addition, audio guides are available in several languages so that everyone can enjoy the visit. At the end of your tour, you will have the opportunity to dress like a true Viking and capture fun moments in photographs. The cost of entry is approximately 30 usd.

The exhibits and audio recordings give you a great first start to understanding Iceland's early beginnings. The background noise/music makes it hard to hear the audio sometimes but definitely worth visiting this museum. Don't miss the short video on how the wax figures were made.

This museum is a fun way to learn about Iceland's bloody history. You are given an audio-guide and listen to descriptions of approx. 17 scenes from the country's past. At the end, you can watch a video on the making of the figures in the museum.

I had a blast in this museum! The fee is reasonable and you’re given an audio piece for the narration. You enter a kind of creepy dungeon like place where they have displays of silicon figures that are displaying certain scenarios. The different sections are numbered and the narration goes off by the numbers. Yes it’s a little creepy in there but it’s also super educational. Nobody jumps out lol but you do get that feeling like something will- don’t worry- no jumpers. When you’re done you can try on some costumes( historically accurate ) and pose for photos. It’s all fun! I would definitely come back here- I even loved the gift shop, they have an array of beautiful jewelry for reasonable prices.
