- Roam429486798630 contributionsMust Do One of a Kind Snorkeling Adventure in IcelandWe had a spectacular time snorkeling at Silfra with our guide Gretar! Pick-up and drop-off were easy. It was around a 40-60 minute drive to the national park. When we arrived, we changed into our thermals in their warm/heated changing van, then Gretar helped everyone get dressed up in our drysuits (or wetsuits if you can brave the cold). Everything went very smoothly, and the water is not as cold as you think it is!! The visibility is INSANE!! You can see for so far underwater and it was so cool to think that you're swimming in between two tectonic plates. This is an experience you can ONLY do in Iceland, so I would say it is a MUST DO!! Gretar made sure everyone was comfortable, and let us know what to expect every step along the way. Also, he let us know what we were looking at when we were in the water. I also thought Gretar would just take a few photos of us with his Go-pro, but he actually took like around 200 for our small group of 6 people!!! So many pictures to capture all the great memories. Highly recommend!Written March 12, 2024

He went above and beyond to help us get our gear on, double checked us for safety and took lots of photos for us. Glad he did because I surely couldn’t with the dry suit gloves on. It was nice we could keep our layers on under the dry suit and we had zero leaks at all! Your face/hair/hands get wet. Kevin helped us out of the water and even made us hot chocolate. Everyone should be more like Kevin. Enjoy your trip to CA Kevin! 🍻🍻🍻🍻Written March 12, 2024

My husband and I were really looking forward to this event, and trekked even through the horrible rain to muscle through it. We arrived 30 minutes prior and met in the designated parking lot, while walking through what felt like the beginning of a rain storm. 5 minutes before our scheduled meeting time to snorkel, we were messaged that the event was cancelled due to weather. In the cancellation policy, it advises the customer to notify at least 24 hours ahead of time for a full refund, but we only got notice 5 minutes ahead of time. The communication was really poor on their end, especially because we checked with them the night prior to see if the snorkeling was still scheduled and was told we were good to go. Another party that was also being stormed on near us was really pissed and screaming once they found out. The only reason I give 3 stars is because a full refund was issued in a timely manner. I understand weather can lead to cancellations, but for future parties please don’t wait until 5 minutes prior to meeting to inform them. Such a shame!

Hello Mina
We are very sorry to hear that you did not get to snorkle with us.
Unfortunately Icelandic weather often changes very fast. We always make sure to be informed regarding the upcoming weather forecast but with Icelandic weather that is not always enough. What the weather forecast predicts as good weather at one moment can become bad the next, with short or no notice.
If we would have known well prior to the tour that we could not operate due to weather we would ofcause have had cancelled it then.
When weather conditions get too bad for the tour to be operated the tour does get cancelled. The main reason of cancelling due to weather is ofcause the safety of our customers, that always comes first.
Best Regards

Wow. This was most definitely the most extreme thing my friend and I have ever done. But man, was it worth it. Especially thanks to Chico and Louise for being a hilarious dynamic duo. I was laughing so much while we were getting ready to go on the adventure. These two knew how to make people laugh even when they’re freezing their butts off! Louise can help you get on your gear quickly and effectively while being professional. But he also knows how to keep the morale alive with jokes and banter. Chico had a heroic moment when my friend and I were getting parts of our suits on in the back of the van. Suddenly hail started pouring from the sky (hello Iceland) and huge gusts of wind blew it into the van. We were kind of screaming a little as it was both startling and uncomfortable. Chico ran over and leapt to close the doors; in so doing he got caught up by a strong gust and almost got pinned in the door! But he was strong and he closed the doors and also checked to make sure we were alright. We will never forget that heroic (yet hilarious) moment. Thank you.
We were also in Chico’s group for the actual snorkeling. He did a great job of making sure everyone knew how to get into the safety position and how to properly manage any water that got in places it shouldn’t.
The views in the water took your breath away. Unbelievably clear water and interesting chasms from the tectonic history. This was worth facing the bitter cold, and in a way, it was a test of fortitude and resilience. Thank you Chico for helping us test our limits (I didn’t think my hands could be that numb for so long without falling off). And thanks for saying I was good with my fins (made me feel special). These guys were fantastic and hilarious and made the experience so much better, truly. Make sure you tip them well! They deserve it!

Tom and Luis were fantastic! Luis talked us through everystep, from putting on the dry suit, snorkle, saftey brefing, tour to taking off the suit and warming up to a much appriciated hot chocolate. Tom was our guide in the water. He guided us through the tectonic plates and made sure everyone was safe and happy. It was amazing! once your face is in the water, you really dont want to look anywhere else! This is one experience that I would love to do again.
Tom and Luis were friendly, funny and informative making you feel at complete ease with what your about to do.
Thank you both

Amazing and unique experience! Came with my husband and teenage son and did the dry snorkeling. Was a little confused when we got to the site - just go past where all the dive company vans are located, and there is a large parking area. Then walk back to the vans. The guide named Lotta walked us through all the steps, gave us helpful tips (like to go use the restrooms beforehand and take off jewelry), got us the correct fitting suits, and went with our small group through the snorkeling tour. She was so helpful and took great care of us! She took photos of everyone during the whole time, even while in the water. So no worries about bringing a waterproof camera. Also, don't worry about your stuff while snorkeling- they keep everything safe inside their vans. I've snorkeled all around the world, but always in a warm ocean - never in a glacial lake. This was so different and worth it! I suggest drinking the pure glacial lake water at point point 'cause when do you ever get a chance to do that??? Most of the time is spent getting into and out of the gear, so total in water time was about 35 minutes. You should stay warm enough, but wear extra socks and expect your face and hands to get cold. Dry suit kept everything dry.

Was an amazing experience and amazing service. Ivan was over the top, he was very friendly and took good care of us...at one point I started to panic because I didn't know what to do as it was for the first time when I did snorkel and Ivan was very professional and made me feel comfortable and confident quickly. I would definitely recommend Adventure Vikings. I was impressed. Much better than other tour providers. All credits to Ivan, he did amazing tour and a great experience for me in Iceland! Many thanks!

Silfra Drysuit Snorkeling was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Considering this is the only place in the world you can swim between two tectonic plates, we had to add this to our Iceland itinerary. Our guide Luis was awesome, he shared his knowledge and was funny to boot. He made sure we were all educated on the workings of our suits and the path we would take so we felt comfortable going in.
I would highly recommend snorkeling with Adventure Vikings!

What an amazing day!
We were with Vero for our tour and was such a great trip! Can't thank enough for the fun and extraordinary experience it was at Silfra last week! The drysuits are in great condition with no issues whatsoever. Really good kit and equipment offered and the hot drink at the end was the cherry on top as I was freezing but its totally worth it!!
Recieved a briefing and info about the fissure and rock formations prior to getting in.
I really like that it was a small group and not overwhelming with people!
I completed my drysuit training to dive silfra back in 2017 in uk so it's been on my bucket list for ages and I couldn't have done it with better company!
Recieved photos from it a few days later on an easy Dropbox page to download even tho photos don't do the place justice you must see it with your own eyes 😍
The whole national park is so picturesque so if you are self driving to the location I would totally recommend having a walk about and seeing the area aswell as the snorkeling spot!
Gracias Luis and Vero for the best experience!

If you do nothing else in Iceland, do this! Our group was lead by Luis, who was excellent, striking just the right balance between professionalism (his team took real care to ensure we were properly kitted out) and humour, as well as explaining the geological significance of what we were about to see. After the 'in-water' safety briefing we were off and - spoiler alert - nothing could have prepared me for the clarity and general amazement of what we were about to see. Equally, Luis was always close by, ensuring we all knew where we were going and that we didn't miss anything. We had some other amazing experiences in Iceland (e.g. snowmobiling, lava exhibition, two spas, plus a geyser and plenty of waterfalls), but this was the highlight.

Perfect and very well-conducted tour, Bart picked us up from Reykjavik and Luis was our instructor for the day. Both of them were really nice and took the time to answer any questions we had about the trip. As someone who had never snorkelled before then, this was very reassuring.
For those that are worried about the cold and the drysuit itself (particularly if it's your first time snorkelling), I would say that you really have nothing to worry about - it's warmer in the drysuit and more protective than you might think. The snorkelling tour itself was actually a lot more comfortable than I was initially expecting but honestly, for the sights that you see below you, you'll quickly forget how you are feeling and instead allow yourself to be absolutely captivated in awe at the beauty and sheer scale of the fissure. Plus, you are literally swimming in between 2 different continental plates - how could you possibly pass that up?! Need to come back and do it again.
Finally, Luis, if you're reading this by any chance, thank you so much for being a brilliant instructor! You were awesome dude and I wish you all the best!

Hi Kyouijin C
All participants must know how to swim and be comfortable in water. If you are not a good swimmer and require a life jacket to feel safe while in water then you might want to reconsider if this activity is suited for you.

The tour you are currently commenting to is a drysuit tour. We do however also offer wetsuit tours. If wetsuit is opted for it must be prebooked. That tour and many others can be found on Adventure Vikings tripadvisor page.

Gretar Thorl
Reykjavik, Iceland20 contributions
Hi Fabian P
You stay in the water for about 30-45 minutes.
Donning the suit and other gear, the pre-snorkeling briefing, snorkeling and finally taking the gear off. All in total the tour takes around 2.5 hours if met at location.
After the tour we also offer our customers hot chocolate.

Can you use your own camera recording equipment like a GoPro or would that be too challenging?
Gretar Thorl
Reykjavik, Iceland20 contributions
Hi
Customers are free to take their own waterproof camera equipment with them snorkeling.
Note that the cold water often drains batteries quite fast.
For those thinking about taking a smartphone with them, the wetsuit gloves that are worn with the drysuit are very thick so operarting a touchscreen is extremely hard.
Our guides also have cameras and do take photos during the tour which are included.

Hi!
All our snorkeling tours are guided yes.
Rules or regulations are in place regarding snorkeling in Sifra set by Thingvellir National Park committee which we fully comply with.
Safety is very important to us and all of our guides are Professional Scuba divers at PADI Divemaster or higher level certified as well as being certified by ICETRA (The Icelandic Transport Authority).

Hi, I use a prescription mask to snorkel, won’t see well at all without one. Are prescription masks in a range of possible corrections available as part of provided gear? Thank you, Will

Hi Will
We provide snorkeling masks but unfortunately do not have prescription masks.
Customers are ofcause more than welcome to bring and use their own prescription masks.
Another solution is to use contact lenses under our masks.

Hi do you have lockers in the area for our bags?

Hi Daniel
No unfortunately we do not have lockers. Basically cause the whole area which is a Unesco world heritage site and a National Park as well, governing parties of the area do not allow any facitilites. Therefore us and all other snorkling/diving companies operate at the moment from outdoors with the help of our vans and tables on the lot. You can always ask the guide/s to help secure your belongings inside one of the vans. We however always advise people to leave expensive or treasured belongings at their accommodation. Please don't hesitate to get back to us if you have any other questions.

Hi max weight says 264. My family would like to all do but my husband is 280. Is that too far over for the dry suit? Thanks

Hi Elke B
As you noted the maximum weight listed in the tour prerequisites is 120 kg (264 lbs). That is the fit our largest suits will allow for. A correct fit is very important cause of safety and especially for the costumers comfort.
