A bus trip like this is the worst way to try and see the Northern Lights. However, they are cheaper than smaller group tours. That being said, Reykjavik Excursions did the best that they could---nice buses, on time departure.

The big buses are only allowed to go to certain areas so they choose one spot (from those that are available to them) that the guide thinks has the best probability for viewing that night.

A smaller vehicle can go more places and/or change direction more easily.

Also, when six large buses converge on one parking lot there is a lot of people using flashlights or flashing bright iphone screens or walking in front of you. If you are a serious photographer this is a problem.

A smaller tour provides the option for photos of people in front of the lights (if viewing is possible once again).

However, these trips are usually much cheaper than smaller group tours. So you get what you pay for....

Our guide Emma was very nice and funny. This particular company took at least 3 full charter buses and other companies met us at the same location. Tons of people came out to see the night we went. We saw some activity for 5 minutes right when we arrived and then nothing for the rest of the night. They said we could come again because we did not see them, but with our schedule we were not able too. This company does not pick you up at a bus stop, but they do drop you off at your desired location. Overall, I would only recommend if there is a high probability of seeing the lights. The week I went was rainy and cloudy so I messed with our chances and did not make it worth it. We didnt get back to our hotel till 1 am, so make sure you dont plan something early the next morning.

More time spent on the bus then watching the lights.

The location chosen was just a big parking lot by the airport KEF. No place to sit or lean against. With so many cellphone only tourists it would help to offer small tripods or similar to hold the phone for better pictures.

Onboarding/ticket verification was done manually with a clipboard while seated on the bus, even though we are given an electronic ticket / QR code. We lost 20 minutes on that alone.

While it is a nice gesture to drop off people at their hotel, this wasn't explained at the time of booking. Thought we were returning to the bus depot BSI. If at registration we were required to put a destination hotel, we could have had an earlier departure.

Don't book with this disrespectful company!!!

We booked a tour to hunt northern lights from 22:00 hs. Pick up was a designated bus stop at 21:30. We've been there waiting while freezing for 30 minutes, until a bus from this company stopped to drop off passengers from another tour and told us our tour had been cancelled due to weather conditions.

NOBODY had the kindness to let us know in advance given that it was something that they knew at least from 9pm.

I will update on how easy or hard is the refund process.

The skies were clear and the Aurora forecast active so we booked a bus tour in the knowledge that we would be taken to a dark location in order to see the lights. Having paid for a jeep trip once before at almost four times the price, and got taken to the same places as all the buses, this was excellent value. There were lots of buses in the car park in the mountains where we ended up, but it was possible to move away from the group and pick a good spot for photographing them. We had an excellent display that were active for around two hours and Claudia our guide was very knowledgeable. For a basic and cheap (forIceland) trip, this was fantastic and well worth taking.

Where do I even begin... We got dropped off with (no exaggeration - by the tour guides own admission) 800 people by the side of a main road for 2 hours and told to 'enjoy the hunt' but at the same time 'don't leave the car park' (which was right next to the airport for anyone wondering). The guides didn't show/share any knowledge or enthusiasm and as we got on the tour (which left half an hour late) she announced that she would check the forecast. What's the point when you're dumping everyone in a set location anyway? When I did the same tour in Norway they genuinely chased the lights, tour groups set off in different directions & the guides were trained in professional photography to capture it. It is truly incomparable. Don't bother.

The great thing about Reykjavík excursions is that if you booked a tour on a date and it doesn’t look like there’s a high chance of seeing the northern lights they will cancel the trip and allow you to rebook for free for another day. Because the northern lights are natural phenomenon that no one can really predict or control I would recommend scheduling them for your first night there. That way if your date is canceled you just booked for the next night until some thing works out. If you do end up going on a tour and you don’t see the lights they also allow you to rebook for free as well. We were in Iceland for four days and none of the tours happened until the very last day so I’m glad I kept rebooking to the next day. The bus picked us up from our hotel and the tour guide provided very interesting information about the history and mythology about the lights.
When going on one of these tours you’ll only see them for a little bit, if you’re lucky. For most of the tour you’re just sitting on the bus waiting for the skies to clear and the lights to show through. For this tour we waited three hours at a location and nothing happened. On our way back to town the lights suddenly appeared. The bus driver immediately pulled over and we all got out and we were able to enjoy the lights for about 10 minutes before they disappeared. I have had friends have gone on these tours and not seen the lights so I was really happy that after what looked like a very disappointing attempt to see the lights turned into a very successful trip. We were also able to get some really great photos with the lights.

We were lucky to see Northen light on our 3rd attempt. Kudos to the RE for rebooking without hassles and making every attempt to make sure the travelers had the opportunity to see Northen Lights. I was very impressed by their customer service in general. We forgot some stuff on their bus on 3 occasions and found it at their counter a the Bus Terminal every time (you can't lose stuff with this company/Iceland in general !!! :))

As per calling this a tour, well it's really the Bus driving you far away from the city and parking in the field and patiently wait for Northern Lights to appear (it's on nature to make lights appear). Like I said, they do make every attempt (by rebooking) to make sure you got your money's worth.

Suggestion - make sure you go to see NL on the first day you arrive, that way you have multiple attempts to see NL in case they don't appear on the very first day. Also, check on the probability on NL on the local sites to see if it will happen or not .. pretty accurate.

We were picked up in front of our hotel and taken to the bus station. There we boarded one of the 6 or 7 big buses to drive out to the national park. Along the way, our tour guide gave us a lecture about the lights. Suddenly, she called out, "The lights are in front of us." The bus quickly pulled over into a parking area and we all got out to view an incredible spectacle. After a half hour, we boarded the buses again to continue to our final destination. Their we enjoyed another hour or so of continued amazement. We were lucky. Not a cloud in the sky and a sun that was active at just the right time. Our guide said it was one of the top three nights for the lights this winter.

Everyone knows that there is never a guarantee on seeing the lights. But you got to give it a try if the weather is cooperating. The bus tour offers the most economical opportunity to see this spectacle!

We went on the tour 16.03.2020 and saw very little as the clouds obscured the sky. When this happens you are invited to re-book the tour for free. We did so for the 18.03.2020. It snowed that morning but was a clear sky by midnight. We arrived at 11.15pm but the show really started about 12:10am (as predicted by the local weather web sites!). Awe inspiring and spectacular to say the least.
