Never again. 2 hrs in stead of 3 and no whales.
Never again. Moved to other, smaller and less comfy boat. Paid for 3 hrs but backnin 2 hrs. Just spotted a few dolphins for 1 minute an NO whales. Rediculous arguments at reception upon our claim.

      So many Puffins
Puffin trip so nice. This little mini-excursion put you up close to puffin island. It is a small cozy historical vessel, that was a fun sight-seeing cruise. You must checkin to the special tours office, 15 minutes before departure for your boarding pass. Company provides great commentary and binoculars. If you have a high powered long lens camera, bring it. Crew was fantastic. Recommend

      Worth the Trip!
This was an amazing tour! We weren’t sure if we’d have time to squeeze in whale watching, so this midnight sun tour was perfect for us. Even though the weather started out rainy, it cleared up by the end and would’ve still been fabulous regardless. They offered fully waterproof suits that kept us dry and warm! We saw minke whales, a THOUSAND dolphins, and a humpback. Many birds including puffins were fun to see, too!! Katalina & Kati at reception were so warm and welcoming, they made this a great tour from the minute we walked in. The captain kindly stayed out a few extra minutes for us because our sightings were so great. Our guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about the animals and she was so engaging. Even if you don’t see a humpback or other larger whale, just being out on the water and seeing other marine life was beyond worth the trip. Thank you again so much everyone!

      Fun (and quick) puffin experience
The guide really made this trip - extremely knowledgeable, provided super insight into the puffins and their daily/seasonal routines. Early June is a bit too early to see the pufflets, but we saw plenty of puffins when we visited. As others have mentioned, don't count on great photos, as they are far away. Binoculars were provided and quite helpful. Shoutout to the captain for his ability to navigate close to the island in a manner safe to the puffins and the passengers.

      Audits Tours Puffin express tour
Awesome experience! The island is home to thousands of puffins and they were Everywhere. On land, in the water and flying around us. Our guide, Marta, was fun and knew her Puffin facts. Our tour was full with about 33 people and we were able to interact with the guide and see all around us.

Excellent boat tour to see the puffin colony!
I booked onto this tour the day prior, since I had a free half day in Iceland and decided I’d like to try my luck spotting the puffins! The meeting location (Special Tours office) was clearly indicated and easy to find. I walked there from my accommodation and it took me no more than 25 minutes to reach the port/harbour. After check-in, we were met by our guide who took us down to the docks. We were a very small group that day - only 9 people - which made the boat trip very pleasant! It’s a small boat with limited seating, so I’m not sure how they would accommodate a group larger than 12. We left promptly at 8am, departing for a small island off the coast of Reykjavik (journey time: 25 mins) where the largest puffin colony is found (up to 60,000). We saw so many puffins! Maybe several hundred if I had to guess. They were flying all over the place and others were sitting stationary on the island. Like other guests have commented - the boat stations itself quite far from the island, so you can only see them from a distance. I knew this going in, and I didn’t expect to return with any Nat Geo quality photos. Mostly, I just wanted to see them in their natural habitat. You would need a 1000mm lens to stand any chance of capturing a quality photo. It was a fun and affordable thing to do with a half day in Reykjavik. If you book through the office, I overheard the staff say the tour was $51 Euro. I booked through Viator and I had some stored up credit/points to use, so I paid only $50 CDN for this tour, which was good value! I’m not sure I would have done it for full price - $51 Euro. Unless I heard the number wrong. It was very cold and windy on the boat, so dress warmly. Because we were such a small group, there was room for all of us to sit inside while journeying to and from the island. The journey there was very peaceful and the water was calm. However, on the way back, the ocean was much more rough and waves crashed into the side of the boat. I don’t get seasick, but for those that do, you may find the boat journey unpleasant. We docked where we initially left. The tour is 1 hour, but we didn’t arrive back until 9:20am (8:00am departure). There is no toilet on board (there was one, but maybe we’re not allowed to use it), so do use the toilet before you get on board. The Special Tours office also does not have a toilet, so you will have to cross the street to Exeter Hotel and sneakily use their restroom prior to departure. The guide was very informative and the captain was really friendly! I enjoyed hearing about the migration patterns of the puffins and I learned many interesting facts. Really great tour overall! However, do lower your expectations about the quality of photos you will walk away with. If you’re there to observe puffins in their natural habitat and learn about these fascinating creatures, you will enjoy this tour. If you’re there on account of photography alone, you will be disappointed. Thanks for a great tour! I really enjoyed it!

Unfavourable sea conditions — company is very professional
The sea conditions were too bad last week for Special Tours to go out on the tours we’d booked. They were excellent at keeping me advised of the situation, rebooking and in the end promptly refunding our money because conditions hadn’t improved enough by the end of our stay. The next time I’m in Reykjavik, I will not hesitate to book with them again — hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative.

      Puffin guarantee
Special Tours guarantee puffin sightings on this tour and they didn't lie. They took us to one of the three islands just outside Reykjavik (don't remember the name of the island) and there were plenty of puffins in the ocean, in the air and on the island. The guide and the boat captain were both very knowledgable about the puffins and there were binoculars to borrow for better sightings. Unfortunately, the weather was quite windy so it was hard to focus with the binoculars, but the captain took us as close to the birds as he could with the waves around the boat.

      Great puffin tour!
We had a great time at a puffin watch tour! Our guide was great, friendly, and informative. Even though it was raining, we did not mind it, as the tour was incredible. We managed to get close enough to see the puffins but stayed far enough not to disturb the wonderful birds.

We had a wonderful time, seeing minke whales, lots of dolphins, and puffins on our three hour tour. Joel was an awesome guide! We will do this again, next time we are in Reykjavík!

      Excellent tour
This tour was fantastic! Our guide, Oskar, was entertaining, knowledgeable, and quite funny. He was approachable and clearly experienced. The boat was perfect and the group small, 24 people. The captain was quite knowledgeable and friendly, as well. We saw LOTS of puffins and several other sea birds. We even had a bonus sighting of a harbor seal! One hour is perfect out and back. Highly recommend!

Special Tours Office Staff are HORRIBLE... Book with a different company
This company literally provided the WORST experience during my Iceland visit. It's unfortunate because once we were finally on the boat to go on tour, the crew of the boat was wonderful. The level of bad information, incomplete information and incorrect information from the office staff was unbelievable. My suggestion, which I am NOT recommending this company on any level is, if you purchase any tickets from them: (1) MAKE SURE you are clearly told WHERE the pick site is, (2) WHAT the ACTUAL pick up time is, and (3) WHAT boat you will be actually boarding for your tour. We were told different and conflicting information for each of these points and almost missed our tour boat. The office staff showed no care or concern for all of the confusion, and incorrect information each of them gave. And they sit right next to each other, so it was clear they had no idea what they were doing nor did they care. Another suggestion is: Make sure you ask clarifying questions. Example: If the office staff tells you pick up is at 1pm, ask them what time will the bus be at your stop. We were told our pick up was at 12 noon. We got there at 11:30 and waited in 40 degree weather and at 12:30 there still was no pickup. When we called the office, we were told there is no pick up at our site and that we needed to walk to the main office. After rushing to walk to the office, the other front staff told us that pick ups START at noon and there is not specific time at each stop. When we questioned why we were told there was no pick up at our scheduled stop, the other office staff told us it was just easier for them to tell us to walk only to find out the driver did stop at our location and left because no one was there. Then the office staff gave us the wrong boat name and #. We waited by the wrong boat for 20 minutes, and when no one showed up, they told us to go to another boat only to discover the LARGE crowd on the other side of the pier was where we to actually be. We had to run across the pier to catch that boat for our tour. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. BOOK WITH ANOTHER company. The front office staff is HORRIBLE at their job. A different tour was cancelled while we were there and several people were left out side in 40 degree weather waiting on a tour that was cancelled and the office staff NEVER informed them. The staff just sat there as if they were being forced to be at work. There are plenty of other companies on the pier offering tours... save yourself a horrible experience and go with one of the other companies.

      Overbooked
Ive rated this 3/5 because we did see puffins but just about as this was so overbooked that there was barely any room to move on the boat. There should be a maximum of about 10 people allowed on the boat so that everyone has an opportunity to get a good view of the puffins.

      Life-time Experience
Hello, The tour was up and beyond our expectations. Seeing dolphins and whales can be considered as quarantined since the tour crew is highly experienced and conscious of what they’re doing. It is very safe, nature-friendly tour. We’ve attended the tour as family and it was very easy and convenient for us. I’d highly recommend. Thanks to Special Tour team for the experience.

Saw many dolphins and Minke whales (they're quite small so you only see them briefly break the surface.) Puffin cruise (1 hour total) to a small island was great--saw many adults and pufflings. Guide provided lots of interesting info.

Aside from the freezing weather and the rain, this was a fabulous tour. We got to see a humpback whale right next to the boat and our smaller boat got quite close to the island to see the puffins. Make sure you dress for cold weather - INCLUDING A HAT AND GLOVES. A raincoat is also a must.

Thank you for your review! We're glad that you enjoyed your tour with us. Humpback whales are one of the four most common species that we encounter in the bay, and it's been a great season for humpback sightings so far. It can get quite windy and cold in Iceland, even in the summer months. We do provide thermal overalls on the whale watching tours but as you say, it's always a good idea to bring a hat and gloves. Thank you for sailing with us, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland! Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

I did a combined tour of whales and puffins and I was not disappointed!! Our guides Massimiliano and Alice were outstanding!! They were so knowledgeable and you could tell they loved their jobs! We were able to see about 6 different species thanks to their teamwork. I had a wonderful time and would take this tour again!

We really enjoyed this tour! We were lucky and our party were the only ones who booked on this drizzly morning. While seeing the puffins was ok (they were pretty far away and hard to see), we did see a pod of white beaked dolphins who swam around our boat for awhile and then saw a humpback whale that we were able to follow around for a bit. Was able to check this off my bucket list!

We did the whale watching in the morning and then transferred to the Puffin boat about 30 minutes after returning back to the Old Harbour. Very well run tours. The Whale Watching was on a large ship called "Andrea" and there was plenty of space to sit and stand to see everything. The guide gave us a lot of information on the way out to the bay (about 45 mins) and then we saw lots of Dolphins and at least three different Minke Whales. The weather was fantastic and the voyage smooth. On the way back to the harbour the guide gave an interesting talk about whales and showed examples of bones and balleen. The ship was great and there is a cafe on board which was good to sit in on the way back and would have been a god send on a cold day. Waterproofs and lifejackets are supplied should you need them.
The puffing tour was really good, on a smaller boat "Old Skuli" we went close to a local island that was packed full of puffins in the water and stalking about on the cliffs. Lots of great information too from a lovely guide. All in all a very good couple of tours with a very well organised company. Highly Recommended.

Whale watching was a fantastic experience and would highly recommend it. I got the package with the puffins but didn’t see as many puffins as I thought. If I was to do again I would just do whale watching 👍. Bonus we had great weather and sun shining.

Both excursions were very disappointing. I saw only the fin of a dolphin; my husband saw nothing on the whale watch. A few people saw one or more minkes quite far away. My husband and I saw one supposed puffin flying -- hard to tell -- on the puffin watch. The boat was quite small, crammed full of people, some having to sit inside where it would probably be even harder to see any puffins if there had been any. The boat does not get close enough to the island.
We were there Aug. 14, and were told the puffins had been leaving. Whales, too?
No one said, or we didn't hear. The tour operators really should stop taking people out when the puffins and whales become so scarce. That would be the ethical thing to do. This was quite a waste of time and money.

A very fun cruise. The tour guides are really fun and get just as or even more excited to see the whales and puffins as the guests were. They were full of facts and stories and just a really solid tour. There were snacks and souvenirs available on the boat.
