About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- sptaylor730 contributionsGreat tripGreat trip. The guide gave great instructions on how to navigate the boat, how to avoid sea sickness and other helpful hints. Sea sickness tabs were available for free. Thermal overalls are available for those who sit outside. Great trip.Written October 2, 2024
- davidwT9423FL0 contributionsGreat experienceThe whale watching experience was fantastic. We saw many whales (or mare likely a few whales many times) and had many good views. The seas were fairly calm, while also helped. The only reason for four stars was that the trip was handed off from the company we booked to another one based in Haughanes, and the hand-off wasn’t smooth, with the person picking us up having no record of our reservation. In spite of that, he took us, along with about 10 others, from Akureyri to Hauganes for the tour.Written September 28, 2024
- Catherine C0 contributionsGreatHad a great time on this trip, would recommend going right to the bow as this is where I saw the most (loads of minke whales and 3 humpbacks). The guide was really nice and helpful, doing the tour in both English and German and saying the type of whale in any other languages on board (about 10 or so in total, what a legend). Dress warm and don’t worry about taking photos of the whales as the guide will probably be taking them anyway and uploading them to a google drive afterwards.Written September 23, 2024
- helenek8010 contributionsWhale watching shore excursionAmazing trip with stunning scenery . We saw minke and humpback whales and the guide on board was very knowledgable and helpful. It was also nice that they had extra overalls on board to put on to stay warm so we could be on the top deck and really get the best views. The launch location is close to town and the cruise terminal and was easy to find.Written September 22, 2024
- nicolepP8526HQ0 contributionsNorthern LightsEven though it was cloudy, the crew really made an effort to give us the best possible experience. We were lucky enough to catch some glimpses of the Northern Lights and appreciated that they offered us a chance to try again on another night. The boat was comfortable, with a warm indoor area, and they provided free coveralls to keep us cozy, along with sea sickness meds if needed. The crew was all super friendly and attentive, making the trip enjoyable despite the weather.Written September 20, 2024
- gatorsina0 contributionsWhale watching in rough conditionsTour guides and staff were friendly and accommodating. We were offered overalls in case you didn’t bring waterproof pants and jackets. Our tour was considered “rough” due to 20-30min winds and gusts up to 40mph. I pregamed with a meclizine 24 hours prior to the trip and then again 3 hours prior and did not get sea sick. They do offer the pills there free of charge but it won’t do much since it takes 30-60min min to work in my opinion. So if the weather forecast is looking rough, pregame with meclizine ahead of time. We saw some porpoises but no whales. Disappointing but not the captains fault. Overall good trip.Written September 19, 2024
- Ivan B0 contributionsWhale watching experienceBooked this tour from get your guide, arrived by cruise ship and walked 5 minutes to the jetty, got onboard and boat left for our tour on time. Massimiliano was our guide and very informative commentator. We would surely do this tour again and recommend it to all ages.Written September 6, 2024
- PBPG0 contributionsOk but a little disappointingThe deal included a pick up from a bus stop near to our hotel. This cost us an extra £20. It turns out that our hotel is about three minutes’ walk from the dock we were setting off from. Bit of a rip off. The half covered boat got us to Puffins for sure, though most were either in the water or flying and given the motion of the boat it was not very easy to get either a good look at them or a decent photo. The boat really didn’t quite get quite close enough. The commentary was a bit weak, not too much detail about what you could see, one longish point out about some bird on the far horizon which I am sure no one in the boat but the commentator could see. It was only an hour, but long enough. Overall somewhat disappointed.Written September 4, 2024
- 680JanH6800 contributionsAmazing service from office staff!Unfortunately I missed this tour on 8/20/24 due to unforeseen delays related to cruise ship schedule, however, I must say the office staff at Special Tours did everything possible to accommodate the late arrival.Karolina and Kathi were so great—changing the pick up location, sending a map to show walk between hotel and their pick up stop, even sending a phone number for a taxi when it was apparent the cruise transport would not get me to the hotel in time for Puffin Express pick up. They could not have been more helpful and respond to email with amazing speed. They also helped with booking questions I had. Thank you! I hope I will have another opportunity to go on Puffin Express!Written August 23, 2024
- A_Traveling_Norseman0 contributionsGreat Whale Watching Tour!!!The highlight of our trip to Iceland was spotting 3 whales on our 10am tour. I believe 2 of the 3 were humpback, but they were all magnificent. In fact, we saw these same whales multiple times. Although seeing whales is a matter of luck, this touring company is top notch our guide Lucas was informative as well as funny.Written August 18, 2024
- 969kirstenh0 contributionsWell worth the time and moneyPuffins are one of those must-sees in Iceland. They are absolutely adorable and have some very interesting behaviors, which we learned about. I enjoyed everything about the tour: even though they had warned of "rough" seas, there were minimal waves and no one got sick. Captain was good, and Patrick was really funny, enthusiastic, and informative. I learned a lot and saw SO MANY PUFFINS. They fly really fast so it is hard to get good pictures. There are binoculars on the boat, which helps seeing them on the island (where they are more stationary). When the captain turned off the engine, and we just floated around by the island, it was truly magical. Some people weren't dressed warm enough (it is cold out on the water!), but fortunately there is a cabin on the boat to sit inside and get warm.Written August 15, 2024
- Carol L0 contributionsGreat ExcursionPuffin tour was everything I hoped for and more. Patrick, our guide, was well versed, very educational, and loads of fun.Written August 13, 2024
- 479toddt0 contributionsA WORTHWHILE EXPERIENCE WHILE IN TOWNA great experience and for many a way to view Puffins as well as other birds just minutes from the city. The guide and Captain were outstanding and very helpful and professional. Highly recommended for any visitor and affordable. Thank you for a great time.Written August 11, 2024
- ronsK2620QP0 contributionsFascinatingThe marine biologist on the boat was outstanding. Her presentation throughout the cruise was exceptionally professional. She pointed each species of whales that surfaced near the boat, described the species, what they ate and their migration patterns.Written August 11, 2024
- susanpT6661QD0 contributionsUp Close to PuffinsSmaller boat allowed us to get very close to the Puffin nesting island. The expert on puffins was great and answered lots of questions, including some from our 7 year old granddaughter. The boat was comfortable and there was plenty of time for watching the puffins and other sea birds.Written August 10, 2024
