What to expect
  • The rocky landscape around Reykjavik tells a dramatic visual story of Iceland’s volcanic past. Begin your aerial adventure at Reykjavik Domestic Airport, where you’ll meet your experienced pilot and receive a brief safety orientation. Climb aboard a helicopter and buckle up either in the front next to your pilot or in one of the back passenger seats. As you rise into the air and make your way east of the capital, watch all signs of civilization disappear as the rocky, lunar-like landscape comes into view. See evidence of former volcanic eruptions in the dramatic craters and rocky lava fields below, and learn about the area’s still-active geothermal properties as you watch steam rising from solfataras (volcanic vents) and bubbling mud pits.  Get a breathtaking aerial perspective on some of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions, including spouting geysers and the hissing lava fields of Hengill Geothermal area. Fly over several clean energy power plants, and listen as your pilot explains how the movement of tectonic plates below the earth’s surface releases geothermal energy that is harnessed and used to power a large portion of homes in Iceland.  After your flight, return to solid ground at the Reykjavik airport and bid farewell to your pilot.

The flight I went on was not the one I booked, but I've no complaints about that. I booked a flight over the lava fields of the most recent eruption but by the time I arrived in Iceland this eruption had ceased so I was more than happy to get the call that my flight had been upgraded to one with a landing in the geothermal landscape. Due to weather conditions, my flight was brought forward to the morning rather than early afternoon which meant we flew through beautiful clear blue and pink skies with a winter sunrise. We landed in pristine snow right next to clouds of steam rising from rocks - an astonishing combination of freezing cold next to boiling hot! We were treated to a glass of bubbly by our pilot and got plenty of time for photo opportunities to capture the beauty of the surrounding along with the magnificent beast that was our helicopter! I urge you to book (but do leave your day flexible in case the timings need to change)

I booked this as part of our 25th anniversary, my wife had never flown in a helicopter before. Everything was excellent, from waiting for the flight to how special we were made to feel. We were contacted before our flight and it was suggested the weather would be better if we flew the day before, which we were able to do. My wife sat next to the pilot, the views and commentary from the pilot (Jon) were exceptional. The landing was also spectacular, it is a treat to get so far away from the beaten track. The flight back to Reykjavik was also stunning. If we return we will definitely do this again. Thanks to all at Nordflug.

Brilliant trip with a great knowledgeable pilot who answered all of questions. Seeing the landscape from above is magical and I would recommend taking time out to do this trip as you really do get to see what a great place Iceland really is.

We booked the full monty Essential Iceland helicopter tour however unfortunately due to bad weather we had to do a much quicker restricted tour than we had originally planned, however it was absolutely brilliant. Sigurrós, Vera and our pilot Fannar were absolutely brilliant and we had a magical time from start to finish. Fannar is an very talented pilot who was also very attentive and looked after us well, and we thoroughly enjoyed a wee wander and a glass of bubbly with him when we landed on an old volcano. All in all this is a once in a lifetime experience and one not to be missed.

I was very impressed with the way that the company handled our cancellation & refund when poor weather cancelled our flight. I was glad that they were committed to safety & did not try to make the trip in bad weather for the sake of making more money. They offered us another booking the next day but weather also interfered with that date. And we received notice of the refund the same day!

Me and my husband went on the Geothermal Tour with Samuel. The weatther was fabulous and the view amazing. I really enjoyed flying over the water, the lava, the mountains and surprisingly the city from above was also really great. We stopped for a few minutes in Hengill and enjoyed the silence and view out to lake Thingvallavatn.
