Half an hour snowmobile ride in a fog over a snow field to a small melted out cavity at the tip of a glacier.
This review is of the Arctic Adventures. The tour was listed as snowmobile & ice cave ... Langjökull Glacier And Ice Cave Exploration on the same day. My friend and i signed up for this trip on their site in mid-March of 2025. Listing specified snowmobiling on a glacier. We selected Reykjavik pick up option. Pick up was timely at the designated spot, but then the bus drove around city for a while picking up others. This was followed by 1.5 hrs ride to their base not far from Gulfoss. After a half an hour spent in their cafe we were fitted with coveralls, helmet and balaclava (recommend bring your own). Next step was another 45 minute drive on monster snow truck-bus on bad road covered with mixture of snow ice and mud til we reached the snow field where they keep snowmobiles. No one in the group had any experience riding snowmobiles. After a brief (5 min) instruction on how to ride snowmobile we rode for about half an hour to the entrance to the ice cave. You can either ride alone (for extra fee) or have 2 people - one rider and one passenger, or for more pay you can ride with a guide. We (2 of us) rode on the same snowmobile. The ice "cave" is actually a melted space between glacier and underlying ground at the tip of the glacier. it is about 6.5 feet high and 15 by 20 ft, with the very narrow melted water channel extend further under the glacier. We spent half an hour milling around there looking at the ice, we had about a dozen and half people and we filled it. We then reversed the steps and rode back to the monster truck/bus. . The snowmobile ride for the novice was unnerving, complicated by poor visibility due to fog, was very bumpy and uneven as the snow was melted in spots, several snowmobiles flipped over (no injuries :-)). The ride in the monster truck/bus was impressive. Curiously, contrary to the advertising, we never actually rode ON the glacier. The snowmobile ride was on the snow field covering rocks that typically melts in summer. Visibility was minimal with occasional glimpses of neighboring peaks (which you may just as well see from the road ). Guides were very nice and informative . We returned to the base where we stayed for an hour at their cafe with limited food choices, coffee and beer. Returned to Reykjavik by a different road , some nice views along the way. The total time from pick up to drop off in town was about 8.5 hrs. You may enjoy this excursion if you have never seen ice cavity in a glacier close up, want to ride snowmobile on ungroomed terrain on a snowfield and if lucky with weather want to see some snow covered rocky peaks and have a few hundred dollars to spend. The trip ran well, our guides were explaining things during bus ride. Listed cost was 278USD pp. the actual charge for credit card was in icelandic kroner 47,990 ISK, converts to about 350USD. Buyer beware. IMHO the cost (especially with overcharge) did not justify the trip that mostly consisted of sitting on a bus getting to and from the base camp..

          An incredible tour with Vjeran
We did the 6-day tour around Iceland and absolutely loved it. It was well organised, the hotels both charming and clean with some nice food options. We also got to see things that we would have not found on our own. Thanks to our guide Vjeran, who went above and beyond to show us beautiful places. Vjeran was very friendly, fun, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. Thanks for a great trip Vjeran!

Excellent day trip from Reykjavik - comfortable passenger van, lots of time at each of the stops to explore, and Savi was a very knowledgable guide. Highly recommend this excursion

Bumpy snowmobile ride on a snow field in a fog and a look at melted out glacier tip/cavity
The advertising promises snowmobile tour on the Icelandic glacier. My friend and i signed up for Reykjavik pick up option. Pick up was timely at the designated pick up spot, but then the bus drove around city for a while picking up others. This was followed by 1.5 hrs ride to their base not far from Gullfoss. No one in the group had any experience riding snowmobiles. After a brief (5 min) instruction on how to ride snowmobile we rode for about half an hour to the entrance to the ice cave. You can either ride alone (for extra $$) or have 2 people - one rider and one passenger. The ice "cave" is basically melted out space at the tip of the glacier, it is about 6.5 feet high and 15 by 20 ft, the very narrow melted water channel extend further under the glacier. We spent half an hour milling around there looking at the ice, we had about a dozen and half people and we filled it. We then reversed the steps and rode back to the monster truck/bus. Visibility was very limited with occasional glimpses of snowy crags. We returned to the base where we stayed for an hour at their cafe with limited food choices, coffe and beer. Returned to Reykjavik by a different road , some nice views along the way. The total time from pick up to drop off in town was about 8.5 hrs. The guides were exceptionally nice. The snowmobile ride for the novice was unnerving, very bumpy and uneven as the snow was melted in spots, several snowmobiles flipped over (no injuries :-)). Curiously, contrary to the advertizing, we were never actually on the glacier. The snowmobile ride was actually on the snow field covering rocks that typically melts in summer. So, if snowmobiling is your thing you might as well just ride snowmobile in any snowy place in the world (being from US midwest there are better places in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan) Visibility was minimal with occasional glimpses of neighboring peaks (which you may just as well see from the road ). We went there in mid March. So, you will enjoy it if you have never seen ice cavity, want to ride snowmobile on ungroomed terrain on a snowfield and if lucky with weather want to see some snow covered rocky peaks and have a few hundred dollars to spend. Again, the guides were very nice and informative. IMHO the cost did not justify the trip.

Wonderful tour, perfect duration, fantastic guide!
We had a lovely time despite the rainy weather. Our guide, Inga was AMAZING! She knows so much about Iceland - its geology, its people, and its folklore. The afternoon tour was perfect for us with a noon pick up and 6 pm return. It was cold and rainy but we were able to see the main sights. Inga told us all about the geological process that led to Iceland's unique topography. We also learned about elves and trolls. Being in a small group meant that we were able to take our time and never felt rushed. We highly recommend this trip, particularly if you are not as mobile (or energetic) as the longer 9-11 hour tours might require.

          Great trip!
Great day out. Tour guides were interesting and fun. Always felt safe despite the whiteout blizzard. Highlight was when one of the guides who is half Irish and half French sang an Icelandic lullaby at the end of the ice cave (the 'chapel'), with backing vocals from 'Snow' (not the 90s rapper), an Icelandic guy in his 20s who had been working on glaciers since he was 14. I remember thinking to myself 'This is a different way to spend a Monday afternoon' :) Only grim thing was learning how much the glacier is receding. Highly recommended trip, which was rounded off by meeting some Icelandic Ponies!

Fabulous trip made better by our amazing guide, Diddi
Absolutely amazing trip! Our guide, Diddi, was fabulous. He was accommodating, personal le, informative and adventurous. He took us to all the amazing spots and more and even made sure to watch for Northern Lights and make sure we saw them. We enjoyed having him drive us-especially with the unpredictable weather, and know we would have never seen the secret spots without him. We changed plans a few times and whatever we needed, Diddi made it happen! Arctic Adventures was great with helping us plan and accommodating the changes also. Highly recommend the private tour option.

          Northern Lights tour
We did the 6 day tour for the ring around Iceland and the experience was incredible, from the views to the hikes and excursions and the amazing food. Our tour guide Vjeran was the BEST. He made sure we were all engaged and went above and beyond with providing us with knowledge and history from one of the most beautiful countries. It was truly a great experience filled with memories I will cherish forever.

          A memorable experience
This tour exceeded my expectations and was indeed a memorable experience. Apart from the first day of travelling we were very fortunate to have dry and often sunny weather. We also had a marvellous guide who was knowledgeable, well organised, and occasionally funny. He managed to get the balance of Icelandic music, informative commentary, and contemplative solitude absolutely correct. Thank you Siggi. Iceland is a magnificent country with stunning geology, a deep sense of its history and beautiful scenery. We saw all of that on this trip. The highlights - and there were many: Northern Lights several times, a humpback whale so close it felt touchable, the Myvatn hot lagoon to ourselves, and a stunning drive across the snowy wild country from Egilsstaðir to Myvatn. Most of all being woken by my Aurora App at 0430 and having the northern lights roaring silently above me at the Wilderness centre outside in the cold windy darkness. The hotels were all comfortable, especially the Berjara chain in which we stayed twice. I have seen sixty seven winters this was the first 'organised tour' holiday I have ever done - to my surprise it was excellent.

          Amazing guide and stunning views!!!
Our guide Kevin (from Troll.is) was amazing !!! He truly made the day special. He was so caring, so patient, so knowledgable about not only the terrain but also about ice climbing in general. He even taught us how to do the "viking pushup" to drink fresh glacier water straight from the glacier! The whole day was phenomenal.

          Best experience in Iceland
We did this tour as part of the 3 Day - Iceland Bucket List Tour. The walk up Skógafoss Waterfall was a bit tiring and the stairs were a bit wobbly but worth the view from above. Our tour guide Tomasz took us to a very nice lunch spot in Reynisfjara and gave us loads of information throughout the drive. The glacier hike was the highlight of the whole trip! Our guide for the hike was brilliant, so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Unfortunately we don't remember her name. The only downside was that I had to rent hiking boots because mine were slightly too low to safely put the crampons on. I wish the requirements for the boots had been better specified in the tour description as I thought mine would be good enough since they are sturdy hiking boots.

          Beautiful tour
We did this tour as part of the 3 Day - Iceland Bucket List Tour. This was our first full day in Iceland and all of the spots exceeded our expectations. The landscape was beautiful all throughout the tour but specially the Church Mountain and the black sand beach. We also got to see some seals, and even a whale fin in the background of one of our pictures! Our guide Slavi was very friendly, gave lots of information and made tour fun.

          Amazing experience
We did this tour as part of the 3 Day - Iceland Bucket List Tour. There was only five people in the bus so we had plenty of time in all the stops to take pictures. It was a great experience to see the tectonic plates in Þingvellir, the geysers and the Gullfoss waterfall! The secret lagoon was a good way to relax in the afternoon as it was not crowded. However, the water was very hot so if you're sensitive to temperature be careful and take breaks outside or in the cold plunge pool as needed. Our guide (Guna I think) was amazing, very nice and informative. She explained everything very well and gave us tips about hidden gems, and even advice on where to try to see the Northern Lights from Reykjavík.

A brilliant idea but far too many of us for too few guides
I have emailed Arctic Adventures three times since this trip as well as completing their post trip online review. I have received no response whatsoever therefore I am reluctantly writing this review. The concept is good and the advertising was brilliant. So much so that over several years, my wife and I had resolved to come to Iceland specifically to do the Fissure swim. The reality unfortunately was somewhat different. There were far too many of us for too few guides On site we were collectively asked “are you on the coach”. There were two coaches (from Reykjavik) so this was unclear We were then what appeared randomly, handed a dry suit out of the side of a truck apparently containing the required clothing, and told to put it on When asked where to put it on we were told “Over at the wooden bench”. Here we were asked to put our removed clothing into bags and put them under the wooden bench – not exactly secure or weatherproof We were told to strip off unrequired outer-layer clothing in the open air – high up in Iceland with a strong cold wind blowing and no protection. We are aware that a building for changing-in was not allowed in the National Park, but surely a dedicated vehicle could have been provided In addition, the evident confusion among the organisers meant that we were hanging around waiting to be given the next item, or to be helped on with the first item, for a very long time We learned subsequently that each group of six of us was supposed to be allocated a guide. This did not happen Instead, as we needed help with anything we simply had to ask whoever we could Replies were often “You are not in my team so I can’t help you" Ultimately I got my inner dry suit on and found the zip all the way down the front was missing I was told this didn’t matter as the outer suit will cover it – so why did we have an inner suit which remained open and with little purpose It was also unclear where the foot area of this suit was meant to go – we were told “Over the heel” We were belatedly handed the outer neoprene wet suits and started to (try) and get into them. We were mostly assisted by other attendees but eventually the organisers did ensure that our ankle wrist and neck seals were made watertight. We moved down the galvanised iron steps onto the platform which was in the water My wife who had attended only to support me and take photographs from the path nearby, also got this far at the urging of the organisers who said “You’ve paid so you might as well at least get kitted out” so she did so and went as far as the platform, was photographed thus, but the organisers were aware that she did not want to enter the water, only observe. Our group of six was now five, I ended up as the last of our group to enter the water. Without a guide allocated, it seems that the overall organiser, Marcin, was allocated to be the guide of we five. How those four who were ahead were doing, I have no idea as Marcin was with me I entered the water face down and pushed myself off from the platform. By so doing, I witnessed the only view I had downwards and thank goodness I did because that is what it is all about and turned out to be my only chance to do so Next I heard Marcin’s voice shouting “I didn’t tell you that you could swim off” (which I hadn’t done), pulled me back and first said “Show me you can roll onto your back” I did so Marcin then asked me to turn downward and then back up a couple of times to prove to him that I could do it This was not as easy as normal diving with which I am very well familiar, because the over-size suit I was given was so large, so full of air and ridiculously buoyant without any kind of counterweight. At that point, in a loud voice Marcin said “I can’t spend any more time with you because I have 25 others to look after – how I really don’t know as all of the others had long gone and I believe we were the last group of the day This was in fact incorrect as he had been allocated to six of us, my wife who had come out, the four others and me He then pulled me back towards the steel ramp and told me to get out I therefore did not experience snorkelling in the Silfra Fissure In upshot, all of the negative experiences could have been averted if we had a clearly defined guide and if there were a lot less of us Money so often in safety and like matters, tends to dominate. I am told by others that the original intent was to be four divers per guide, not six The purpose of the foregoing is I hope, to cause the organisers to change the way they do things in the interests of us all.

The best part of the tour was the minibus driver Vjeran. He was so informative and actually knew more than our guide at the lava caves. He explained how the island of Iceland was formed and was passionate about what he was talking about. He had a great sense of honour too. I would highly recommend a tour with him again. He came with us for the tour and took photos for us etc. Top class job. The lava caves were very good and a very easy route for all ages. Its more of a walk through rather than caving. Thanks for everything Vjeran.

We had a great morning at the Lava Tunnel after our golden circle tour was cancelled due to weather. Franklin our guide was incredible - friendly, funny and very knowledgeable! He filled our bus journey with stories and anecdotes about Iceland and its history which was excellent! He made the trip!

The lava tunnel was great and well managed but wish it was slightly longer - another stop or two with some extra information as it was so interesting to be down there!

All in all, a worthwhile trip and would recommend to anyone! I learnt a lot

Cherub was an awesome guide, super informative, and a great sense of humor. That was especially helpful during the winter months when it’s difficult to see anything, Vjeran came in with a great piece of information that transformed and brought context to the landscape around us.

The lava caving experience was great too, an explosion of colors adorning the walls. Our cave guide Iris was highly informative and took awesome pictures.

All in all, great experience, would recommend to my friends!

This was just a short lava tunnel tour but the most amazing and memorable experience for us, The cave tour guide (a lady whose name I cannot seem to recall now) was very knowledgeable and very friendly. She even willingly took a photo of each of the group inside the cave. The reason I only gave 2 stars was because of the tour bus driver. On the way back, he was supposed to drop us off at our hotel but I think he was being lazy and let us walk a couple of miles from our hotel. He said that there was a lot of road construction and that he cannot bring us to our hotel. My husband was gracious enough not to argue with him so we just got off the bus.

I have been waiting for a refund for 2 months now. They have now blocked me on facebook for asking for my money back. Stay away from this group!

Our trip (with its excellent guide) was ruined by appalling customer service.

Due to blizzard conditions Arctic Adventure's bus - with 9 of us on board - almost plunged off the road down a 40 ft slope (one in one incline). The bus would definitely have turned over. We had to get off the bus or risk possible injury or death. This is despite getting off the bus seeing us clinging to it to avoid being blown over by strong winds on an ice laden road. We were then stranded in the open for over an hour in blizzard conditions. My two kids were distraught - being aware of the recent completely unrelated fatal road accident in Iceland. All are thankfully safe - including the guide who stayed on the bus with his foot on the brake to stop it from going off the edge. [Well done to the guide.] Thankfully passing cars gave shelter to my two kids and another younger child on the tour. The help from another couple on the tour was also brilliant.

However, a safe ending has been ruined by Arctic Adventures now wanting to charge us for the return (by post) of some of our property, which we had to leave on the bus as we escaped! They say its their policy for customers to collect their possessions left on their buses. To be clear, we had to get off leaving all of our possessions - day packs etc. When the 'rescue' bus driver braved going back to the bus to get our stuff, sadly he only picked up the day pack and not my daughter's Montcler woolly hat.

Despite Arctic Adventures confirming they had the hat and that they would pass it back to me the next day - I'd agreed to meet them at one of their pick-ups for a tour early the next morning day before we flew home, so it would have been easy - they now say 'that's not policy' and I should have picked it up from them (10 mins away by taxi on the morning I was flying out).

Outrageous and Arctic Adventure's behaviour speaks poorly for the quality of the company. My strong advice is don't use Arctic Adventures at any cost as they cannot be trusted.

Dear andrewcutler2004, Thank you for taking the time to express your experience here with us. We're saddened to read that your experience with us was compromised due to the unfavourable road conditions and missing hat. First of all, we fully understand that the icy conditions on the roads may have seemed scary on that day but at no point was anyone at risk of being harmed. With a professional driver on board, your safety was kept at all times, as you have explained above. When the bus started sliding on the ice, despite being equipped with winter tires, the driver kept it on the road but it did turn on the road. The driver instructed everyone to go off the bus just in case it would slide some more. The icy conditions then prevented the bus continuing further resulting in a replacement bus being sent to your location. We are happy to hear that the guide managed to keep you safe during and after the incident, as per your description, as that is of course our main focus in such conditions. As per our email conversation, the general rule is that our customers are responsible to keep track of their personal belonging. While we certainly try our very best to reunite them, our options are quite limited. We have, unfortunately, up until now not found the woolly hat that you say was left on the bus and for that we sincerely apologize. As you had to continue on a new bus the guide took all items left on the previous bus to be delivered to the owners. There seems to have been some miscommunication as the hat, that the guide confirmed we had, turned out to be a cap and did not match the description you have given on your daughter's hat. If found, we will of course, as promised, reach out to you and get the hat sent to you. We fully understand that the terrible accident that happened on the south coast bridge, to tourists travelling on their own with a rental car, can well affect the experience other travellers in Iceland might have. However it is important to keep in mind that the situation on your tour was very different and your safety was never at risk. We are again very sorry to hear how your experience has been affected during your stay. Again, we will be in touch if the woolly hat turns up, but unfortunately at the time this is being written, the team has not been able to locate the described hat. Best regards, Customer Support Team Arctic Adventures

This lava cave experience is not for the faint of heart-or for those with bad knees. Our guide was Andrea, who was excellent. However, I think a few of us on the tour were more or less expecting a cave that was more open. This cave will have you crawling, bending down, and shimming on your hands and knees, and going into tight spaces. If you are claustrophobic, beware! You will NOT like this experience! Make sure you are dressed accordingly; I came back with bruises on my knees from getting scraped against the rocks. However, once you are inside it is beautiful and unlike anything I've ever seen. It was a tough experience, but I am glad I did it.

One of the most adventurous experience you can ever have! The cave has so much to see, all those unique landform features and requires a brave heart and fitness.

We had a private tour since our group of 12 was large enough for us to be exclusive. Chris and Emily picked us up promptly at our hotel and drove us out to the lava fields. They were very knowledgeable about the region and the cave itself. They provided a lot of insight into things we discovered in the cave. This trip was much more in depth than I think any of us had thought it would be. We were crawling through fairly tight spaces at times (optional) and it turned into a workout! I would highly recommend this tour as well as Chris and Emily as tour guides. Thank you guys for a great time!

If I remember correctly, our tour guide was Micah, lovely guy, honest, fun & knowledgable. I had no idea what it really entailed until I got there as it was my friends suggestion & I was up for something different! I am actually a little claustrophobic myself but I really wanted to challenge myself & once I got there I thought about it in terms of step by step with caution but determination. It was AMAZING! I am so glad I went - do wrap up - although not too much as you need to be able to move freely due to the varying spaces and surfaces. The rocks are unsteady in places underfoot & the entrance was quite icy. I had my proper hiking boots & thick waterproof gloves with a decent grip as you will be kneeling, crawling and at one point will have to almost crawl on you stomach through a fairly narrow space. It does not last long but be prepared for the ruggedness of the rocks, stone & moisture under your hands and knees! I had on very thick joggers, they did the trick fairly well. It was a truly liberating experience & I would highly recommend it & encourage you to challenge yourselves if your health permits it. Ultimately, it is a beautiful natiral phenomenon & worth the adventure! Do it! Totally awesome!! I was secretly very proud of myself! Lol
