    Nice horse riding experience.
Horseback riding was very well done and an enjoyable experience. Guide even took me on a solo ride in order to ride faster than the group. Unfortunately, we saw NO whales on the whale watching trip.

    Two fantastic trips
We loved both of the tours we did with this company. We booked in person and the service was friendly and helpful. We did our Northern Lights tour that evening and our Whale Watching tour the following day. We took both trips on the ‘Andrea’. We found the boat to be comfortable and well maintained. Plenty of room for everyone although if you want a seat on deck we’d recommend being early. We’d also thoroughly recommend borrowing the weatherproof overalls available on board. Toastie warm throughout both trips. The staff on board ship were great and both if our guides, Massi and Patrick were engaging and knowledgeable. Patrick channelling Dory to try and call whales was joyous. When we’re next back, we’ll be booking with this company again.

    Saw playing dolphins
Easy to find and friendly staff on the boat, including drink & food to buy. We had waffles. We saw dolphins and minky whale. Dolphins were the best as they were right with the boat. Stay down the bow area for the best viewing.

    Amazing experience!
We did the 2 hour RIB boat whale watching tour after deciding that it would be more fun to be closer to the water versus in the larger boat for the whale watching. I think this was true, but do be prepared for the wind and bumps on the speedy boat, especially if you're sitting in the front! Our tour guide, Patrick, was stellar. He was very funny and knew a whole lot about whales and dolphins. He expertly identified what we were seeing (in our case - dolphins and minke whales) and then proceeded to share about a million of the most interesting facts that I have ever heard about the creatures we saw. I really recommend this tour!

    Nothing exciting
No whales, only a few dolphin fins. I understand you can’t foresee if you will see whales, but for the money, we should see something more then fins. Felt like a tourist trap.

    Definitely Recommend
I took the classic whale watching excursion on the andrea ship and had Ivan as my guide. He was extremely knowledgeable, funny, and a very great guide that made the excursion AWESOME! We weren’t lucky with the whales, we saw a couple, but the trip was well worth it. I would recommend, I originally signed up for a combo tour, part of which got canceled and I was refunded accordingly.

Such a fun experience! The guides are very friendly and thorough. The trip is long enough to catch plenty of fish, I caught two! The meal is prepared quickly and is very delicious! Highly reccomend!

    Disappointing and stressful
Absolutely disappointed. After 36 hours of travel, paid a large amount of money for a driver from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, with a stop during for 2 hours. Driver arrived 30 minutes late for pick up. Dismal rainy day, so asked driver to take us to a restaurant for breakfast rather than the outdoor activity planned. At drop off, made plan for us to resume our journey in 1 hour. 30 minutes after agreed meeting time, no driver still. Contacted driver and was advised that he was in The Haag, and would pick us up in 20 min. Another 30 minutes later, no driver, but he did send us a live map and a freaky photo of himself and our luggage, now apparently stuffed in front passenger seat of the vehicle. Watched him drive via the live map link to the port, clearly dropping others off. By now, i had contacted the main office, and he finally turned around to collect us. We were 30 minutes later for out scheduled check in time at the port, anxiety through the roof and very disappointed!!!

    Don’t forget your Dramamine!
The staff was amazing. Very helpful. The bus driver warned that it was rough at sea that day. We both took Dramamine and both got extremely sea sick. They also have Dramamine at the reception which I thought was very nice. It was our first time fishing and we were both able to catch something.

No whales seen so what is to review. Only just wasted 95euros for a boat trip that for 10 euros would have enjoyed in Greece more

Great tour, not so great transfer
First off, I want to make clear that the boat, the crew, and the guide - Rebecka - was excellent. Rebecka was very knowledgable and passionate about the whales and marine life in the bay, and the captain made sure we got to see a few fin whales as well as some puffin that were hunting in the area which was amazing. We were, however, not particularly pleased with the transfer van that took us to and from the harbor, which was also arranged by Special Tours. The wait and the ride from bus stop 13 to the harbor took a lot longer than it would have taken us to walk. On the way back from the harbor, the driver seemed to forget that we were even on there - he told us and another couple that he'd drop us off first before taking off, but then he went to the cruise ship before picking up some people from another hotel and proceeded to bring them all the way back to the harbor. We asked if he had forgotten that he was supposed drop us off at our stop, and his explanation was that the people he'd dropped off were running late for their tour, so he had to bring them to the harbor first. We're pretty sure he forgot about us though, since he didn't seem too focused on his job (he was on the phone for a large part of the ride). If we'd known the van would take us on a ride all over and back to the harbor before dropping us off at stop 13, we'd definitely have walked instead. So - if you want a great guide and whale tour, you should go for this one! But maybe consider walking to the harbor instead of taking Special Tour's transfer, since it wasn't very reliable or good.

    Very disappointing
Both excursions were very disappointing. I saw only the fin of a dolphin; my husband saw nothing on the whale watch. A few people saw one or more minkes quite far away. My husband and I saw one supposed puffin flying -- hard to tell -- on the puffin watch. The boat was quite small, crammed full of people, some having to sit inside where it would probably be even harder to see any puffins if there had been any. The boat does not get close enough to the island. We were there Aug. 14, and were told the puffins had been leaving. Whales, too? No one said, or we didn't hear. The tour operators really should stop taking people out when the puffins and whales become so scarce. That would be the ethical thing to do. This was quite a waste of time and money.

Tour was alright but I think the guide should of not been on his cell phone while we were looking for whales. Also the captain should of tried to have the boat facing the whales where both sides could see. Instead he had the boat facing frontward and the back people could not see. Probably would not utilize this company again.

    Lucky to see wildlife
Great tour! It’s hit or miss seeing wildlife. We were lucky and saw lots of dolphins, puffins, and few mini whales. The RIB seats are not comfortable, especially for shorter people. If you sit in the front, you will experience the most jostling and get wet from the rain. I was soaked even though I wore the suit and used the rain hood.

    Iceland whales and puffins
Saw many dolphins and Minke whales (they're quite small so you only see them briefly break the surface.) Puffin cruise (1 hour total) to a small island was great--saw many adults and pufflings. Guide provided lots of interesting info.

This was an OK tour, but I expected a bit more. Our boat captain was funny and pleasant, along with the other boat driver, but I expected to hear more about puffins. We did see MANY puffins on the island and the boat ride was pleasant, yet it felt very overpacked - we had quite a lot of people on the boat and it became very crowded when it came to taking photos. We needed to sit inside the boat since there were no seats available outside and it was hot inside.

While I enjoyed the tour, I hoped and had expected to hear and learn more about puffins. Our guides only invited us to ask questions instead of telling us about the birds. They did say a little, but I wish I heard more. In contrast, on another tour, we learned all about the city in the first hour.

It was very easy to locate the pick up spot, which was nicely centered in the city. Overall, this was an OK tour.

Thank you for your review and feedback. We're glad that you enjoyed seeing the puffins, but are sorry to hear that there are some areas of the tour that were not as enjoyable. Our captains should turn the boat around from time to time, and ensure that everyone is able to get a good look at the birds. Our guides should also provide lots of information about the puffins and other bird life on the islands. Our puffin season is over for this year, but we will keep your comments in mind to discuss with the crew for the next summer season. Thank you for sailing with Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland! Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

Excellent trip with lots of penguins to be seen. Friendly and knowledgeable commentator and ships captain. Departure was on time and the booking office well staffed and the whole process was well organised. Boat was clean and spacious.

Went on the puffin express trip. Everything online suggested we would be on smaller boats with less people, letting us get close to the island. Instead about 55 of us were packed onto a much larger boat (had a whale watching sign on the side) that could not get anywhere near the island. We could see many puffins off in the distance - the binoculars helped a little but it was still hard to make them out (much to far for good pictures unless your camera has very good zoom) and there were only binoculars for about 50-75% of the passengers. Picture shows about how close we could get to the island, their are some black dots in the water that might be puffins - we definitely saw some flying around though. This may have been due to it being somewhat windy at the time, but the weather/sea conditions didn’t seem particularly difficult. Regardless, we would have preferred a refund and spent our time elsewhere as the price wasn’t worth the experience. The guide, Patrick, was really great, though! He definitely brightened up the (somewhat) disappointing trip and was very nice, funny, and knowledgeable!

We took the 08:00 trip in mid July and it was fantastic! I know that the chances of seeing puffins can vary due to weather and season, but we got very lucky. There were tons of puffins hopping, flying, and hunting. We got very close to the tiny island and the weather was clear and calm.

Our guide was great - she was knowledgeable and personable. The captain nudged the boat around a few times to get us better angles to see the puffins. The boat was tiny so we took Dramamine in case we got seasick, but with the calm weather and the short timeframe (one hour) we were totally fine. On our way back to the harbor we even got to see the smoke from the volcano eruption that was happening.

I highly recommend this tour! We had a blast and since it was early & short, we were still able to fit in other adventures that day. Keep in mind that the weather might impact your luck -- but since the price point was good, I'd recommend taking the chance on this tour!

We brought our four kids 10 and under - this was the perfect experience for all ages! It was beautiful, there were puffins, seals and more birds you don't get to see on land. Our tour guide Massi was the best!! He answered all my birding questions with thoroughness - even breaking out his birding books to share more details. He was very personable and gave our family great recommendations as well for more birding and water activities. We also listened to his puffin audio clips to hear what they sound like! Boat ride was fun and just enough adventure for us with safety as the focus. Must do!

Really enjoyed this. We boarded a pretty small boat with around 25 other people, and made a short 20min journey out to a nearby island, to see the Puffins and other birds in their natural habitat. Puffins were literally everywhere. Tons floating in the sea, and tons on the island. The tour guide was very knowledgable, and the captain got us fairly close to the island, but do not expect to get any pictures with a phone...you are not close enough for that, A proper camera with a large zoom lens is required.

This is a 1-hour tour out of Reykjavik Harbor. The boat sails to Puffin Island and back. You get a great view of the puffins on the island as well as those flying over and swimming in the surrounding ocean. Our guide, Patrick, was very gracious, interesting, and enthusiastic. I highly recommend this tour. It is recommended to book the tour in advance. If the weather is problematic on the date of your booking, they will allow you to postpone the tour to another date and/or time.

Waste of time and money. The boat was too far out to see the puffins. The only thing you can see is the outline of the puffins on the islands. Even with a long 200mm zoom lens it was impossible to get a picture of the puffins. Could not hear anything the guide was saying about puffins. My husband didn’t even know there was a guide on board. Most of the other people on board were aggravated and disappointed they couldn’t get pictures of the puffins.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback. We're very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the Puffin Express tour with us. The islands where the puffins nest are protected breeding grounds, so it is not allowed to go onto them. How close we get to the islands depends on several things, including tide, wind direction, waves, and how close the birds feel like getting to the boat. The puffins can be on the islands, flying above the boat, or sitting in the water around the islands - every tour is a bit different, and they are notoriously small and fast birds which can make photography difficult. We are very disappointed to hear about your experience with our guide as we pride ourselves in customer service. We will speak to our puffin guides to see what could have happened on this tour, as it is a very unusual situation. Thank you again for giving us your feedback, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland. Kind regards, Special Tours Crew

Absolutely awful experience on this trip and would not recommend to anyone. My child was discriminated against and forced to wear a life jacket despite being over the age requirement whole other much younger children, including a baby were not. My child has additional needs and struggled with this and even though I explained to the disinterested tour guide, was still made to wear it. The guide then preceded to ignore us the entire trip even when I asked questions. After contacted special tours when home their response was they will look into it and nothing since. My child's only wish was to see puffins and this experience ruined it completely.
Would never use special tours again and have many times previous and would encourage others with additional needs or disabilities to look elsewhere as they are not an inclusive company.
