We were there November 2019 - wanted to see Aurora with the naked eye but alas, very faint thought you can see it via camera lens on the night. Was offered another night (free of charge) which we gladly took up - so happy we did, we got to see Aurora the next night.

Tip: Definitely rug up from head to toe, very cold “bite” sailing at night

First night no northernlight unfortunately, but the night-before-neweyears-eve fireworks above Reykjavik made the tour well worth anyway!

Special Tours did their very best to search for the light but nature is unpredictable, just as the weather: it was cold but that's part of the experience :) If too cold, there'hot choclate with whiskey if needed and the crwe offers blankets or all wheather suits as well.

Second try was a succes: 3 hours of dancing lights all the way around. Our tourguide was as enthousiastic about it as all passengers helped with camera settings and told lots about 'lady Aurora'. This trip was a once in a lifetime experience. Loved it, thanks!

We got lucky and were able to go out on the only night available during our stay. You will want to check ahead of time to be sure the tour hasn't been canceled because of weather or cloudy skies. Our guides were very helpful in giving camera tips for capturing the lights if they appeared, as well as informing people to not use flash and to dim their cellphone screens. Nothing like missing the lights b/c of someone's bright flash in your face! Iga was the main guide and she was a delight. She was funny and informative. She was also determined that we were going to see the lights! We were out quite awhile and she kept checking. Sure enough, pretty soon a star here and there appeared, and finally, the clouds opened up and there was the Aurora! I would definitely go with this group again!

It is important to look at many reviews. We went on the tour last night. It was fantastic. It was the big boat and everything seemed very well run. Conditions were said to be fair at best to see the lights. We did not see the lights like you see in pictures and advertisements but what we saw was great. The tour guide filled us in on how and why the lights appear. He also said that if they do show up you need to be up on deck or they may disappear before you get there. There was a slow build up of green. At first best seen using a phone with Night Photo options or slow shutter speed. It clearly showed the green. As time went on it got brighter and brighter so the naked eye could see it. For about 5 minutes the lights shown from horizon to horizon in all its glory. It was wonderful. As the guide said they were only there for a few minutes but we loved it. The bonus was the few bright shooting stars and the oh so clear sky with all the stars shinning. We got lucky in a way but it could be worse and I guess it could have been better. WELL worth the time and expense

There were plenty of lights to be seen, unfortunately, they were the flashes from the cameras and phones of other people. The tour guides did not put a stop to it. For 2 1/2 hours it was nearly impossible to see anything, on the deck. It was extremely crowded, terribly uncomfortable, but, thankfully, we at least had a seat on the deck.

The Aurora Borealis made an appearance. To the naked eye, it looks nothing like the pictures.

The one circle out of 5 was given because we returned to port in a similar condition as when we left. With just a bit less hope in humanity.

This felt extremely crammed and was not worth the time.

(They took some really blurry photographs of the Northern Lights to share.)

To get started positively, it was absolutely wonderful to see the northern lights. Even though they aren't as green in real life as they are on the pictures it is an must see thing. But the organization was extremely bad. First at the check in they told us we can choose between a bigger and a smaller boat to take the tour with, for people who get sea sick the bigger one is recommended and the smaller one should be a bit more exciting. Then when we arrived at the pier they said the bigger one is already overfilled with people so we had to go to the smaller one. After getting ready in the small boat after about 15min someone came in and said we have to go to the big boat. So we needed to change but the big boat was still overfilled. So we had to stand on the completely overfilled deck in the freezing cold wind without a place to sit down for about two and a half hours. There aswell was a guide explaining things about the northern lights which you couldn't understand by any chance on the deck. So overall the experience was worth it, but how they managed the tour was absolutely horrible.

Every effort was made to assist in enjoying the trip. All organised efficiently from booking to subsequent trip ( free as no northern lights on the first night) Would recommend.

The God's looked down on us on this lovely trip. The northern lights lit up the sky over us, we were blessed! The boat it a good size with plenty of room. The staff were helpful and informative. Sea sickness tabs were given out free of charge for anyone that hadn't got sea legs. The hot drinks and snacks were very reasonable price wise. Overall a great trip to give you a really good chance of catching the lights. Also, if they don't show, you can come back night after night until you see them.....free of charge! Happy days.

Our goal of coming to Iceland was to see the northern lights, so we booked a boat tour for our first night & left all other nights (5) open because we knew it may take all of them to see any lights (if it even happened).

NIGHT 1: the day we landed we were advised by flight crew & the news about the awful weather coming in & the next day everyone was to stay indoors. So i was pleasantly surprised when Special Tours emailed us to offer an alternate activity for that night since the boat was cancelled. We went to the whale exhibit for free, & still had the boat tour for the next available night.

NIGHT 2: no activity due to the major storm.

NIGHT 3: the weather was still not good enough for a boat but we were offered a bus tour to see northern lights. This tour was in addition to the boat tour, not instead. We went but there were no lights & it was so windy out it was too miserable to be outside. The whole thing was a bit boring.

NIGHT 4: we did the boat tour yay! There were indoor & outdoor areas, bathrooms, & a cantina with snacks & drinks for purchase. The crew advised on an app to get & settings for the best picture taking. Plus they provide jumpsuits for over your clothes if you want. I used one & it kept me warm. NO lights but we did have a fun time. Some music for the cruise back would have been more fun.

NIGHT 5: we did the boat tour again & saw a tiny bit of northern lights. A crew member had a good camera & showed us her photos. She told us that they would be available for a free download from the website. Even though we technically saw the northern lights, since they were faint we were told we could do another boat tour for free. We were out of time though.

I am very happy with the level of customer service special tours provided. They always emailed us the day of the tour with information & responded quickly to our inquiries. We ended up with 4 nights of activities for the price of one. It’s not their fault how the weather goes.

The alternative activity at Whales of Iceland is still a relatively new option for us - we've been working hard on it, so it's great to hear that you were able to use and enjoy this activity! I think for how much you pay (and you don't even leave that far from Reykjavik) the experience is dismal. Even though they offer a free ticket to come back if you do not see the Northern Lights, when on limited time due to travelling, you have no further opportunity to use it. I think it is a waste of money.

Dear Marilyn, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We're very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your experience with us and were unable to see the lights. It is impossible to guarantee sightings of the northern lights as they are a naturally occurring phenomenon. This is why, whenever there are no sightings, we offer the chance to come again for free on another evening. This offer never expires and can be exchanged for a Whale Watching Classic or Whale Watching Express tour depending on what time of year you return to Iceland. Whenever you know the date you'd like to try again, please email info@specialtours.is and our reception team will be able to assist. Thank you again and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland! Kind regards, Special Tours Crew
